Dealul Mitropoliei
Today, I will take you on a new trip to the Mitropoliei Hill. Let’s explore how the buildings in this area have evolved over time. I will guide you on a walk through one of the hills of Bucharest, many of which still exist today. In the past, Bucharest had several hills, including Radu Vodă Hill, Spirii Hill, Filaret Hill, Cotroceni Hill, Vacărești Hill, and the Hill of Mitropoliei.  The Hill of…

Cloves, 1891 Marga Toppelius-Kiseleff (nee Marga Lucie Wilhelmina Rosa Kiseleff) (1862–1924, Finnish)
Marga attended a German girls' school in Helsinki and began her artistic education at the School of Drawing of the Finnish Art Association in 1880. She furthered her studies in Switzerland under the tutelage of Rosalie Gay, a renowned flower painter. During her time abroad, Kiseleff also spent periods in Paris, studying under Émile Rousseau in 1887. Kiseleff's artistic focus revolved almost exclusively around floral subjects, particularly watercolor representations of natural flowers, fruit tree branches in bloom, and various fruit arrangements. She primarily worked in her studio rather than en plein air. Kiseleff's watercolor and gouache works were first exhibited at the annual exhibition of the Art Association in 1882.

Multi-dwelling buildings on Kiseleff Boulevard Bucharest, Romania Built in 1956-1959. Architects: T. Niga, L. Garcia, I. Serban © B.A.C.U / Photo by Dumitru RUSU . . An extremely interesting ensemble for the innovative constructive methods, the group of buildings is generously set back from the street front, surrounded by gardens and unusually decorated for that late Stalinist period. The buildings were designed to accommodate diplomats and state officials, having a much higher standard than the usual range. In the 1956-59 stage, it comprised three 3-storey slab-shaped buildings and a club (today in private property). Arranged in a free line, generously distanced, the buildings are still lining the Kiseleff boulevard, discreetly hidden by vegetation. They have completely glazed entrances marked by staircases allowing easy access to the two apartments on each floor, where the descendants of socialist public servants go on with their modest lives. source and location: http://romd.socialistmodernism.com/index.php/2018/11/01/unitati-cu-mai-multe-locuinte/?fbclid=IwAR3Q9CtZqU9g_qS6JnA8W_cSawWJcdrLpzPvZNnDi1DkYP71OJQuVPYhOkc

Drobeta Turnu Severin - Mehedinti, Romania
Tumblr media
The modern town of Drobeta Turnu Severin has a relatively new history. It made its appearance on the map of Romania and on that of the world following General Pavel Kiseleff’s decree on the 22nd of April, 1833. The town got its name from the majestic remains of the Severin Fortress which used to look down the Danube and surrounding region at some ancient times. It was erected following a pre-established plan, with wide streets falling perpendicularly onto the Danube or running parallel to it. Drobeta Turnu Severin has warm summers and mild winters, meaning the city is home to magnolia trees, Caucasian nut trees, and gingko biloba as well as the almond trees, figs, lilacs, lindens, and chestnut trees more common throughout Europe. The museum of the Iron Gates Hydropower Station together with the Turbine Hall, the Vodita Monastery, as well as the St. Ann Monastery of Orsova can be easily reached from Turnu Severin. It is from this region that the wonderful area of Cazane becomes accessible both by water and by land. ,,Turnu Severin shows itself in the sunset as in the middle of a decor. Widened, the Danube cuts a curve in the Romanian bank and pushes the town up on a top coverd with trees, the thicket of which discloses overlapped houses enveloped in red hallow dies… A western town with beautiful buildings, great schools, wide and straight streets…” Read the full article

What an awful time of year it would be to have allergies! Hayfever, especially!
If the waves of magnolia and wisteria blossoms covering the capital had not slayed you, by this point, our peonies might just live up to the task. Oh... oh yes, my marvelous peonies. Such boisterous blooms, gone too soon, but! While they are here! There are few flowers and far between which can compete with the giant ruffles and sweet fragrance.
It is too bad we do not celebrate ‘bătaia cu flori’ like we once used to; once upon a time, on the national day of the old Kingdom, I would cart out my finest bouquets for the crowds at Kiseleff Road, for the the military parade. Once the horses past, the people would partake in a theatrical fight of our own - the flowers were our ammunition of choice! They would pay for my flowers, and I would give their pay to those wounded by a much real battle. The roads covered in a floral carpet... our best ‘soldiers’ would even be invited to the day’s reception with the King! I only nominated our best for this, I promise.

But, ah... there is some sweet-smelling history for you, anyway. Maybe I should line the path to my front door with flowers! For old time’s sake, yes?
