"After the crucial second round of talks with the government failed to make any headway, the protesting farmers carried on with their Delhi Chalo march on Tuesday. There were reports of chaos on the Punjab-Haryana Shambhu border as the Haryana police fired teargas shells as farmers tried to break the erected barricades. Drones have been deployed to keep track of farmers’ movements, most of whom are on tractors.
Delhi has imposed Section 144 throughout the city for 30 days, erected barricades and iron spikes on the borders to prevent the farmers from entering the Capital.
Internet and bulk SMS services were suspended for Tuesday in seven districts of Haryana- Ambala, Kurukshetra, Kaithal, Jind, Hisar, Fatehabad and Sirsa. Several farmer leaders’ social media accounts were also reportedly blocked the previous day.
The farmers’ protest, being led by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, has been demanding legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops, as promised by the BJP-led government at the Centre, among other demands like loan waiver and implementation of the MS Swaminathan Commission’s recommendations. The farmers participating in the protest are mainly from Punjab and Haryana."

India could see an authoritarian central government with subordinate state governments under the control of corporate interests and international finance capital.
So says the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), a coalition of 40+ farmers’ unions. It contends that the Union Government of India is proposing to undermine the federal rights of state governments by surrendering India’s food security and compromising its national sovereignty under the slogan ‘One Nation. One Market’.
In a December 2024 press release, the All India Kisan Sabha (All India Farmers Union, AIKS) called for nationwide protests against attempts to bring back the three repealed farm laws.
The AIKS said that the government has opted not to address any of the serious demands raised by the farmers’ movement, including legalising the minimum support price (MSP), increasing public investment in agriculture and boosting pro-farmer credit facilities.
Like the SKM, the AIKS says there is an agenda to dismantle the power of the state governments. Proposed reforms to the agrifood sector seek to encroach upon the rights of state governments over agriculture, land, industry and markets — areas that fall under individual states as per the Constitution of India.

Punjab bandh today: Over 220 trains affected, 157 cancelled and several rescheduled
Punjab bandh today: Farmers under the banner of Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha have been camping at Shambhu and Khanauri border points between Punjab and Haryana since February 13 after their march to Delhi was stopped by security forces.
Tumblr media
Punjab bandh: The ongoing bandh in Punjab has caused significant disruptions in rail services across the state. According to official reports, as many as 221 trains have been affected with 157 of them getting cancelled and 14 being rescheduled. The bandh was announced last week by both groups, which have been protesting at Shambhu and Khanauri border points between Punjab and Haryana since February 13. Their march to Delhi was stopped by security forces.  Vande Bharat Express among cancelled trains The protesting farmers will block rail tracks from 7 am to 4 pm at several locations, thus disrupting the movement of passenger and goods trains. In view of this, the Northern Railways has cancelled 157 trains, including three Vande Bharat Express -- two between New Delhi and Vaishno Devi and another between New Delhi and Amb Andaura. Prominent trains cancelled The other trains that have been cancelled include three Shatabdi Express from New Delhi to Kalka, Amritsar, Chandigarh and several other high-end trains operating in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. The railways also announced to partially cancel seven trains, regulate 14 others, reschedule 13, short-originate 15 and short-terminate 22 trains. Ambala police have advised commuters travelling between Delhi and Chandigarh to take alternative routes via Panchkula, Barwala, Mullana, Yamunanagar, Radaur, Ladwa and NH-44 at Pipli. Why has bandh been called?  Kisan Mazdoor Sanghrash Committee's leader  Sarvan Singh Pandher confirmed that the bandh is part of their ongoing protest and is aimed at raising their demands. This bandh will force the Centre to accept the demands of farmers, the farmer leader said as he slammed the union government for failing to accept the demands of farmers, he added. The decision to give a call for a 'Punjab bandh' was taken last week by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha.

Punjab Bandh Disrupts Life as Farmers Continue Protest for Dallewal’s Health
Punjab is witnessing widespread disruptions today as farmers’ unions have called for a statewide bandh in support of their leader, Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who is on the 35th day of his hunger strike. The bandh, which began at 7 AM and will continue until 4 PM, has resulted in severe traffic and transport disruptions, affecting daily life across the state.
The bandh is being supported by two major farmer organizations, the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) and Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), both of which are demanding the implementation of 13 farm-related demands. Dallewal, who is leading the protest, has refused to end his hunger strike despite his deteriorating health. The farmer leader is seeking medical treatment, but he has declined all efforts by the Punjab government to shift him to a hospital. The Supreme Court has intervened, criticizing the state government for not acting sooner, and has set a deadline for Dallewal’s medical treatment by December 31.
Security has been heightened across Punjab as farmers gather at key locations, including highways, railway stations, and toll plazas. Over 200 spots on highways and link roads have been blocked by the protesters, leading to severe traffic jams. In addition, more than 150 trains, including the Vande Bharat Express, have been cancelled, disrupting travel for thousands of passengers. Public and private buses have also stayed off the roads. However, emergency services, including medical teams and fire brigades, are operational.
In major cities like Ludhiana, Amritsar, and Bathinda, farmers have staged sit-ins, further intensifying the impact of the bandh. Grain markets are also affected, as truckers have joined the protests, halting the transportation of goods. Educational institutions, including schools and colleges, are closed for the day.
While the bandh has caused significant inconvenience to the public, farmer leaders have assured that emergency services will continue to operate. The protestors are also allowing people with urgent needs, such as those traveling to airports or attending medical appointments, to pass through the blocked areas.
The Punjab government is making another attempt today to persuade Dallewal to seek medical help. A government delegation, including senior officials, is expected to meet with the farmer leader to discuss his health and encourage him to end his hunger strike. The outcome of this meeting could determine whether the ongoing protests and the bandh will continue.
The state government is under pressure to resolve the situation, as the Supreme Court’s deadline approaches. The ongoing protest and the critical health condition of Dallewal have drawn attention to the growing tensions between farmers and the state government over agricultural policies. [ad_1] GG News Bureau Khanauri, 23rd Dec. Jagjit Singh Dallewal, the prominent farmer leader on a fast-unto-death for the last 28 days at the Khanauri border protest site, remains in critical condition, sparking widespread concern among his supporters and medical professionals. Doctors monitoring his health have raised alarms over the severe deterioration in his condition, warning that he could face cardiac arrest or multi-organ failure. “Dallewal’s nervous system is severely affected, his blood pressure is fluctuating, and he is experiencing acute protein and fluid deficiencies,” medical professionals reported on Sunday. “His liver and other organs are showing signs of dysfunction, and he could suffer a heart attack at any moment,” they added. The hunger strike is part of the ongoing farmer agitation demanding the legalisation of Minimum Support Price (MSP) through new legislation. Thousands of farmers, along with hundreds of tractor-trolleys, have gathered at the protest site to show support for Dallewal’s cause. The protest, which began on February 13 under the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha and SKM-Non-Political banner, has seen growing participation as Dallewal’s health continues to worsen. A recent Supreme Court report suggesting that Dallewal’s condition is “normal” has been strongly contested by the farmers. “The Supreme Court’s report does not reflect the reality. Tests indicate that Dallewal’s ketone levels are 25% higher than normal, a significant health risk that has been ignored,” said Abhimanyu Kohar, a farmer leader. Tensions are escalating, with farmer leader Surjit Singh Phool warning of violent repercussions if Dallewal is forcibly removed from the protest site. “If the administration tries to move Dallewal, it will lead to bloodshed. The responsibility will lie with the authorities,” Phool said. The protesters are also calling for action on a report by the Parliamentary Committee on MSP, led by former Punjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi. The report, which has garnered support from 30 committee members, including BJP representatives, advocates for the establishment of a commission on MSP and addresses critical issues such as low farmer incomes and the underutilisation of agricultural budgets. In a show of solidarity, several political leaders and celebrities have visited the protest site. Former Punjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi stated that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi might visit if required. However, BJP MP Ravneet Singh Bittu criticised these visits, accusing them of being more about “photo opportunities” than genuine concern. The farmers have announced a nationwide candle march on December 24 and a hunger strike on December 26, although Punjab will not participate in the latter due to the ongoing Shaheedi Days. With the situation continuing to intensify, the Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the case on January 2, 2025. Authorities in Punjab have thus far refrained from relocating Dallewal, fearing an escalation in tensions.   The post Farmer Leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal’s Health Deteriorates Amid Ongoing Hunger Strike for MSP Legislation appeared first on Global Governance News- Asia's First Bilingual News portal for Global News and Updates.
