@library-bandit
My favorite nonfiction reads from this year are:
Religious (which always feels like a separate category): St. Thomas Aquinas by G.K. Chesterton. I feel like we always hear about Aquinas' philosophy, but never about the man. Chesterton portrays him in a way that makes him seem lovable and layered, but most of all, real.
Other nonfiction: The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown, about the 1936 Olympic gold-medal rowing team. I was deeply invested in these boys. I've still only read the Young Reader's edition (since it was the one I could get without a library waiting list), and even in abridged form I love it. (It's now easier to get the full version, but I can't bring myself to read it when I know the whole story and read it so recently).
Overall, some of my favorites include:
Nicholas and Alexandra by Robert K. Massie: A biography of Czar Nicholas II and his wife that reads likes a novel. The people and their world are so vivid and I think about it constantly.
These Beautiful Bones and The Catholic Table by Emily Stimpson Chapman: The first introduced me to Theology of the Body in a beautiful way. The second is almost a comfort read--part an explanation of a Catholic understanding of food, part memoir about her struggle with an eating disorder, part recipe book, but overall a celebration of the goodness of food and community.
The Story of a Soul by St. Therese of Lisieux: The autobiography of a saint who I find intensely relatable that also has enough theological insight to make her a Doctor of the Church. A lot of beauty here.
The Food Explorer by Daniel Stone: A history of the FDA employee who traveled the world in the early 1900s finding crops to introduce to American agriculture. The story intersects with so many major historical events and figures, so even beyond the food it's a fascinating look at the time period.
84, Charing Cross Road by Helene Hanff: More of a story than an informational text, but still nonfiction! It's a collection of letters between a New York writer and the London bookshop she orders books from across several decades, starting just after WWII. It's hilarious and heartwarming and full of the love of books.
Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin: Made me obsessed with Lincoln's Cabinet. The love of history as the story of real, relatable people comes through on every page. (I've only read the abridged version, but can't bring myself to read the full version thanks to Seward's language. It still had too much of an impact on me to leave it off this list).
Bringing It to the Table by Wendell Berry: A collection of essays exploring the state of modern agriculture and man's relationship to his environment. I found it riveting and fascinating.
The most niche nonfiction book I've ever read was probably:
The Feather Thief by Kirk Wallace Johnson: The story of a guy who stole hundreds of bird specimens from a natural history museum to get feathers for his hobby of making historically-accurate Victorian fishing ties. As you can imagine, it's a wild ride through niche topics, while also touching upon lots of broader historical issues like the history of fashion and conservation.
I'm not looking to add to my reading list, but I love people talking about books, and I love hearing about the wide variety of nonfiction books on subjects I'd never even considered, so let's start a chat.
Tell me about your favorite nonfiction book you've read lately (or in general), and/or tell me about the nonfiction book you've read that has the weirdest/most niche subject.

Coriolanus -- Lantern Theater
Coriolanus — Lantern Theater
The Roman rabble are ungrateful to and spiteful towards Coriolanus.
All this great soldier and warrior has done is stave off enemy after enemy, the Volscian commander, Aufidius, several times, keeping Rome free of invaders and those who would conquer and change its policies to their own.
But the people want more.
And not only the plebeian masses.
The patricians, the well-heeled, well-contented…

The Bulls are finally acting like a big market team again
Bulls fans pleaded for a front office change for years. When it finally happened, the team suddenly started acting like the premier franchise it always should have been.
It started with a billboard. Chicago Bulls fans took it upon themselves to raise more than $8K for an advertisement on the corner of Lake St. and N. Racine Ave. in the city’s West Loop neighborhood with a simple message: “Fire GarPax.”
The sign had gone up just weeks after the Bulls’ braintrust of John Paxson and Gar Forman decided to trade Jimmy Butler, a flat-out superstar in the prime of career with two years left on a contract that was massively below market value. It was the type of scenario most front offices and ownership groups dream about, one that opens up an endless amount of team-building avenues with a little creativity. Instead, the Bulls chose to punt, deciding they’d rather sacrifice a few seasons by tanking than trying to build around the best draft pick they ever made.
Three years later, Butler returned to the United Center again, this time to be named an NBA All-Star for the fifth time in his career. The game was in Chicago, but the Bulls’ presence was merely relegated hosting duties. The franchise had no All-Stars, but it was worse than that. There was no hope. The Bulls were among the NBA’s worst teams year after year, but they weren’t quite bad enough or lucky enough to land Luka Doncic or Zion Williamson. The only time the Bulls were ever discussed nationally is when their comically overmatched head coach found a new way to embarrass himself and his city, be it by igniting a near player mutiny a week into the job, installing a literal punch clock in the practice facility, or annoying opposing coaches with his bizarre timeout usage.
As the team’s best player, Zach LaVine, was being interviewed by ESPN right outside the arena, fans interrupted his answers with a loud “Fire GarPax” chant. It was a new level of rock bottom for an organization that only specialized in reestablishing how low it could go.
It never should have been on the fans to get this involved, of course. Paxson had been the team’s top executive for 17 (!) years; Forman was brought into the fold when the team hired Tim Floyd to replace Phil Jackson in 1998. The decision to fire them should have been an easy one, but even the simplest choices become convoluted in the weird world of owner Jerry Reinsdorf. To the chairman, keeping Paxson and Forman was an extension of the ‘loyalty’ that his closest allies believed was his defining characteristic. To everyone else, it was a fancy way of saying he was either too cheap or too lazy to care about his team as much as the fanbase did.
Paxson could have had his job forever if he wanted to, but why? He was clearly miserable. He had started calling his radio interviews “interrogations,” his team was terrible, his hand-picked coach had turned into a punchline. The billboard, the chants, the losses, it finally started to pile up.
Paxson did the only thing he could do: he asked to be replaced.

Two years later, the Bulls have a new front office and a reinvigorated sense of hope, even as the team entered Thursday’s trade deadline five games below .500. Arturas Karnisovas and Marc Eversley were hired from the Nuggets and 76ers respectively to be the team’s new braintrust. Forman was fired, and Paxson was promoted into a position of no authority. Jim Boylen’s dissertations on spirit and the soul after every loss have been replaced by Billy Donovan’s competence and professionalism.
A team that had zero All-Stars only two short years ago now has two.
The Bulls swung the biggest deal of the trade deadline, sending out two lightly-protected first round picks and former GarPax lottery selection Wendell Carter Jr. to the Orlando Magic for Nikola Vucevic and Al-Farouq Aminu. It would be headline news for any team, because Vucevic was the only star that changed teams at the deadline. For the Bulls, it felt like a signal that they should finally be taken seriously.
For the last two decades, the Chicago Bulls did not make trades with the goal of improving the team. Yes, they swung a deal for John Salmons and Brad Miller ahead of an instant classic playoff series with the Boston Celtics in 2009. We’ll also give them credit for acquiring Otto Porter Jr. — included in the Vucevich trade as a salary match — even if it didn’t work out. Aside from those two examples, every trade the Bulls made in the last 12 years was essentially a salary dump. By trading for Vucevich, the Bulls were for once acting like the big market team they always should have been.
Karnisovas and Eversley had to do something. Since being hired ahead of last offseason, their only moves were signing veteran Garrett Temple to a one-year deal and drafting Patrick Williams at No. 4 overall. The rest of the roster was untouched from what Paxson and Forman had built. Hiring a real coach in Donovan had at least made the Bulls less humiliating, but any improvement was coming from resurgent veterans like Thad Young and an incredible efficiency leap from LaVine rather than the players the Bulls drafted in the top-10 after trading Butler.
Lauri Markkanen, Coby White, and Carter were’t going to be the saviors GarPax had hoped for. The Bulls either needed to trade LaVine and tear it down again, or give him a true co-star. The Bulls believe they have found the latter in Vucevic.
The player Vucevic is today at age-30 barely resembles who he was when he entered the league in the 2011 draft. The 6’11 big man did most of his work in the post throughout the start of his career in Philadelphia and Orlando before he remade his game to fit into a league that demanded more shooting range out of its big men. After not even attempting 10 three-pointers total in any of his first five seasons in the league, Vucevic has turned himself into something close to a knockdown threat. This year, he’s making 40 percent of his threes on 6.5 attempts per game.
Vucevic has never played with anyone as good as LaVine, and LaVine has never played with anyone as good as his new center. The two should form a deadly two-game on offense with Vucevic’s newfound shooting ability setting up a killer pick-and-pop routine. LaVine is already one of the league’s best at getting to the basket. Add in Vucevic’s passing ability — he’s finished in the 93rd percentile or above in assist rate for centers the last four years, per Cleaning the Glass — and the Bulls’ offense just became a lot more dynamic.
The Vucevic trade wasn’t the only move the Bulls made on Thursday. They also pulled off a three-team trade highlighted by the acquisitions 21-year-old guard Troy Brown Jr. and veteran center Daniel Theis from the Celtics. Theis has been a productive player in Boston for the last four years and was only let go so the team could avoid the luxury tax. Brown is a former five-star high school recruit at point guard (here’s a 2015 feature we wrote on him back in the day) who was moved to the wing in college in Oregon and then in the NBA. While Chicago’s rumored pursuit for Lonzo Ball came up short, it’s possible Brown could play a similar game as a connecting piece who brings plenty of skills to the table without needing to be a volume scorer.
It is no exaggeration to say Karnisovas made more trades to impact the roster in the span of a few hours than Paxson did in nearly two decades. The previous regime wanted to build slowly through the draft, hoping their selections would mature together and form a golden generation for the organization. They found some success with the Kirk Hinrich, Ben Gordon, Luol Deng clubs of the mid-00s, and again with Derrick Rose, Joakim Noah, and Tom Thibodeau at the start of the 2010s. Those teams always came up just short, though, handicapped by their own narrowing thinking and refusal to throw their weight around as a big market club.
The deal the Bulls made for Vucevic on Thursday was the type they should have made when they had Butler. No one would have missed mid-round picks like Bobby Portis, Tony Snell, and Denzel Valentine then. In reality, the Bulls likely never even seriously considered it. By finally ditching GarPax, the Bulls opened up a whole new world of possibilities the franchise had spent decades ignoring.
Perhaps the most exciting thing for the franchise is that there’s more work to be done. Adding Vucevich makes the team better, but it doesn’t exactly lift them to contender status in the East. The Bulls need to take another big swing. You can bet they’re going to do it after the way they overhauled the roster at the trade deadline.
Chicago could still be waiting for its precious draft picks to develop right now if the fans hadn’t taken matters into their own hands. The Reinsdorfs just didn’t care enough to install a new front office themselves. Whether this is the start of the Bulls changing their league-wide perception remains to be seen, but for once the Bulls did something different. They thought big.

2020 Theatre production #2: Inis Nua’s Reading Series: “Halcyon Days”
Last night I went to one of my favorite Philly theaters to take in their reading of Deirdre Kinahan’s “Halcyon Days.” What a truly lovely short play this was! Focusing on an elderly couple in an Irish nursing home, we are presented with several scenes that slowly develop a beautiful bond between two strangers “trapped” in a world not of their own choosing. The play wrestles with the dilemma of how to maintain your own sense of identity when in a place that tries to impose its own sense of “home” on those who have been removed from their old/real home and now struggle with what that means to them in this new existence. It’s a painful place to be.
The two actors in this reading were outstanding. MB Scallen played the boundary-pushing Patricia who meets and tries to help her new friend, Sean, read by Kirk Wendell Brown. Readings can sometimes have a difficult time holding the audience throughout the performance, but that was no problem for these two professionals who held us captivated throughout the 70 minute show. They made us care deeply and movingly guided us through their evolving and heartbreaking relationship.
The success of a good reading is to make the audience want to see a fully-staged production of the play. This reading did just that. Many thanks to Inis Nua and it’s artistic director, Tom Reing, for bringing us this important work.

Luck has not been on the Eagles side in 2018
In order to win a championship, you have to be both lucky and good.
Last year, the Eagles were not the luckiest team in the world. They suffered a number of injuries which could have crushed their season, including year-ending blows to their MVP franchise quarterback, their best offensive lineman, their best linebacker and their do-it-all veteran running back. Yet, through talent and depth, they managed to win the Super Bowl.
Last year’s Eagles team also benefited from some good fortune. The NFC East was the weakest it had been in years. The NFC, as a whole, wasn’t terribly good. They were fortunate their schedule, as a whole, proved not to be especially challenging.
They got a 61-yard, game-winning field goal from Jake Elliot in Week 3 that, had it not gone through, could have changed the team’s fortunes. They got lucky that Nick Foles caught fire. They got lucky when Bill Belichick weirdly refused to play one of his best cornerbacks in the Super Bowl. They were fortunate that Corey Clement’s TD catch in that Super Bowl wasn’t overturned.
This year, the Eagles haven’t been able to catch many breaks, although it’s not as though they’ve had no luck. The Vikings kept the Eagles in the game with two missed field goals, and a lateral pass the Eagles recovered down two touchdowns gave them a chance to get back in the game. So it’s not as if the Eagles have been devoid of breaks. They just haven’t cashed in on enough of them.
The team should certainly fixate on shoring up the offensive line’s pass defense, the entire offense’s inability to put points on the board (especially early) and the defense’s inability to stop opposing passing games, it would certainly help if they got a little lucky here and there, too.
Here are just a few examples of how Lady Luck has not been smiling on the 2018 Birds season thus far.
INJURIES
Last year, the Eagles were able to overcome injuries to Carson Wentz, Jordan Hicks, Jason Peters, Darren Sproles, and Chris Maragos. This year, things have been different, and they got significantly worse on Monday.
The Eagles struggled to replace Wentz early, had virtually no wide receivers with Alshon Jeffrey not returning until Week 4, Mike Wallace getting hurt in Week 2, and Mack Hollins out until midseason at the earliest. Corey Clement has been banged up and missed time, Sproles has been dealing with a balky hamstring for multiple weeks now, and now Ajayi is out for an extended period of time, too.
The Eagles also lost Rodney McLeod, who we are finding out was far more valuable than anyone realized. They have not been able to overcome many of these injuries and, as much as anything else, it’s helped lead to uneven and sloppy play.
ROUGHING THE PASSER
In their losses to the Titans and the Vikings, the Eagles have gotten hosed on two roughing the passer calls, one in which Carson Wentz almost got his face ripped off and one in which Michael Bennett was called for one of the most ridiculous personal fouls you will ever see.
First, the Bennett play on Sunday, which was simply a terrible, terrible call.
The Eagles had that sack taken away from them when referee Walt Coleman said Bennett went “low into the quarterback’s knees with his shoulder, with force.” That is an obviously laughable call, but it also comes on the heels of this non-call in which Wentz was lucky to avoid major injury.
A former NFL vice president of officiating even thought the Eagles got hosed. That’s two weeks in a row, kids.
BAD BOUNCES
Through five weeks, only two teams have a worse turnover margin than the Eagles’ -4, Jacksonville’s -7 and San Francisco’s -8. The Eagles have lost seven fumbles this year. SEVEN. Last year the Birds lost 11 fumbles for THE ENTIRE YEAR.
Some of that is just bad luck. Take, for instance, this play from Sunday.
Look, Lane Johnson got beat on an inside move that resulted in Wentz getting hit, which happens. But the ball popping up into the sky and right into the arms of Linval Joseph was terribly unlucky. It was unluckier that Joseph then rant it 64 yards to the house.
Last year, that ball probably falls to the turf harmlessly. This year, it falls right into the hands of a defender.
Then there was the onsides kick that bounced off the shoulder pads of wide receiver Adam Theilan and almost found its way into the hands of an Eagles special teams player.
Anytime a team puts the ball on the ground, there is a risk the other team will get it. But sometimes the ball bounces funny, and so far this year, the Eagles have been terribly unlucky when it comes to losing fumbles.
DROPS
Drops are also a part of football, but they’re a bit unlucky in the sense that sometimes you can draw up exactly the right play, make the right throw, and execute in every facet except the easiest part, the actual catch itself.
Wendell Smallwood’s 3rd down drop inside the red zone yesterday was terrible. Nelson Agholor dropped three catchable balls in the Tennessee game. Zach Ertz had a few uncharacteristic drops in the opening-week win against the Falcons. Through five games, the Eagles have 10 dropped passes, tied with the Browns and Vikings for the most in football.
Dropped passes really, really hurt.
OTHERS
The Eagles unfortunately took on a Tampa team at the height of FitzMania, when Ryan Fitzpatrick was playing out of his mind. Hey, who knows, maybe he would have shredded the Eagles pass defense no matter what, but for the first two weeks of the season, the Bucs QB was playing out of his mind early on.
The Birds also took on a Titans team that saw Marcus Mariota play the game of his life, and on Sunday, Vikings QB Kirk Cousins made some throws under pressure I didn’t think he could make in a million years.
However, luck is not the reason the team is 2-3. Too many times this year, the Eagles have not executed. Offensively, defensively, coaches and special teams — all have had a hand in a frustrating first five weeks.
Getting some better luck would help a little, but some bad luck here and there isn’t even among the top five reasons why the Eagles have stumbled out of the gate in 2018.

The Eagles’ franchise quarterback comes in with an absolutely underwhelming 82 overall rating in Madden 20. Look, I get it, the guy has to prove that he can stay healthy and his mobility appeared to be a bit limited as he recovered from tearing up his knee in 2018. If we follow a similar line of thinking, it makes some sense that Deshaun Watson, who also suffered a comparable injury in the same season, has the same overall rating. However, I need someone at EA Sports to explain the presence of Baker-freaking-Mayfield as a higher-rated 83. Will he put up some killer numbers with OBJ and Jarvis Landry streaking downfield? Of course. Has he put together the same kind of sustained excellence over the majority of a season like Wentz or even Watson? I say nay. Jared Goff being ahead of Wentz is nearly as perplexing, though I imagine it’s just a masterful job of trolling Eagles fans. Though, it has made our office buzz and wonder… do we overrate Carson Wentz?
Aaron Rodgers not in the Top-5?
In what world is Aaron Rodgers not a Top-5 QB in the NFL? Patrick Mahomes leading the list makes sense as he’s the reigning, defending, undisputed league MVP from a year ago and is the lead among numerous sportsbooks to do the same in 2019-20. Tom Brady’s placement as a close #2 is fair, but that’s where the wheels fall off. Philip Rivers is the THIRD-BEST QUARTERBACK IN THE NFL? He’s two full points ahead of Drew Brees? Really? Andrew Luck is rated in line with Brees? Russell Wilson -the modern-day Michael “Run around as my O-Line collapses and hope I don’t die” Vick- gets a boost due to his speed and elusiveness. For my money, flip Rodgers and Rivers and I’ll calm down.
Mitchell Trubisky’s 75 Overall Madden Rating Will Enrage Chicago Bears Fans
I don’t think Trubisky is by any means a Top-10 or even Top-15 quarterback, but holy shnikies this is bad. Alex Smith is rated higher, despite suffering one of the most gruesome leg injuries we’ve seen in years. Lamar Jackson’s NINETY-FOUR speed rating likely led to his one point lead in the overall category, but does anyone really think Trubisky is roughly the same player as journeyman Ryan Fitzpatrick?
Nickfolean Kryptonite
Former Eagles QB and Super Bowl LII MVP Nick Foles has been installed as a 77 overall player, the exact same rating as Alex Smith. Is he really worse than Jimmy Garoppolo? I’d say no. Worse than Matthew Stafford? Sure.
A Giant Disappointment
Eli Manning is the 36th overall rated QB with an overall score of 72. That makes him the lowest-rated starting QB in the NFC East behind Wentz (82), Dak Prescott (81), and Smith (77). The Giants’ first round pick Daniel Jones comes in way below Manning with an overall rating of 63, a mere point ahead of third-stringer Kyle Lauletta.
Kevin Kinkead has the rating for every Eagles player, along with some news and notes after the jump:

Fletcher Cox, at 96, is the highest rated Eagles player in the game and the only Bird in the top 15. Jason Kelce is second, listed at 94, and Zach Ertz is third, given a 93 rating.
Desean Jaccson got an 85.
They ranked Ronald Darby as the best Birds corner, with an 82. Avonte Maddox was second with a 78 and Jalen Mills got a 74. Sidney Jones is a 76 and Cre’Von LeBlanc a 73.
First round draft pick Andre Dillard is rated a 70, which feels low to me, but of course I don’t know how you rate a guy who has never played an NFL game.
Stefen Wisniewski was rated 66, which is really low. Wis is a good player.
Rick Lovato, the long snapper, is listed as a backup tight end and rated a 41.
Nate Sudfeld and Clayton Thorson are both in the bottom five of the Eagles list, with a 57 and 56, respectively.
Cox, Ertz, and Kelce all were given a 98 awareness rating.
The fastest Bird? Madden has a five way tie between Maddox, Jaccson, Darby, Shelton Gibson, and Josh Hawkins, all given a 93.
Blake Countess and Maddox have the Birds’ highest acceleration rating, a 94.
Maddox was given a team-high 96 agility rating.
Brandon Brooks was given a team-high 96 strength rating.
What do you think? Did EA Sports get it right?

REMINDER: Fantasy Football Week 8 waiver wire pickups are going to be more quick-hitting since no one likes reading for more than two minutes.
Second reminder: I’m using dollars out of a 100-dollar budget the rest of the way. Percentages at this time of the year are tougher given remaining budgets, and you know your league best. If it’s an aggressive league, you may have to spend more or vice versa.
Week 8 Waiver Wire Pickups: QBs – Quarterback Streamers
Tyrod Taylor, BUF (58%) – Taylor proved once again why he’s among the safest options when it comes to streaming quarterbacks. A 30-point game isn’t part of his appeal, but putting up enough rushing to total 15-20 points nearly every week is… especially against the Raiders.
Andy Dalton, CIN (55%) – Dalton hasn’t been great this year, but he is averaging 22 points per game over his last four with nine touchdowns. This week, the Bengals host the Colts, and it’s a matchup that gives Dalton a chance to repeat his Week 4 performance.
Josh McCown, NYJ (12%) – This just in, but McCown is actually a pretty good Fantasy quarterback. McCown has 15-plus points in all but one game and 27.8 and 28.6 in the last two games. The Jets host the Falcons this week, giving McCown the potential for his third straight high-20s score.
DON’T: Matt Moore, MIA (0%) – Moore is an aggressive downfield thrower similar to Jay Cutler, but the Dolphins head to Baltimore in a short week. The Ravens have held every quarterback under 15 points except for Blake Bortles in that London bonanza. In fact, Bortles was the only quarterback to throw for multiple touchdowns against the Ravens. As for Jacoby Brissett (13%), he’s a dicey option in Cincinnati, and Case Keenum (9%) is headed to London now – that always adds a bit of risk.
Week 8 Waiver Wire Pickups: RBs
LAST CHANCE: Dion Lewis, NE (29%) – Normally, I put a player in the “last chance” section as their ownership tops 40 percent and make for an obvious addition. In Lewis’ case, I just don’t want to talk about Patriots running backs anymore. The only one that you can “trust” is James White in PPR, but Lewis is leading the way (for now) and will have use during the byes (until Bill Belichick benches him for Rex Burkhead just because).
FAB Dollars: $15-20
Marlon Mack, IND (40%) – The shift is happening, as Mack out-snapped Frank Gore last week 33 to 22. Mack is obviously more explosive at this point with Gore averaging just 3.4 yards per carry, a career low.
FAB Dollars: $15
DeAndre Washington and Jalen Richard, OAK (3%, 11%) – Marshawn Lynch looked to be hopped up on Mountain Dew and Skittles, as he ran off the sideline to push and shove some people, including a referee. With Lynch suspended a game, Washington and Richard are must-adds for RB-need owners. Washington will likely see the higher use in the split, but Richard also has some appeal, especially in PPR leagues. Just be forewarned that both are likely one-week options, as Lynch will create a committee headache when back.
FAB Dollars: $10-15
Latavius Murray, MIN (41%) – Jerick McKinnon is still the running back to own in Minnesota, but as seen, Murray has some upside, especially if the Vikings are using a more traditional, between-the-tackles run game.
Wendell Smallwood, PHI (40%) – The 49ers run defense is basically non-existent. Ezekiel Elliott helps skew the numbers, but it was the second time a running back has topped 30 Fantasy points against the 49ers (Todd Gurley, Week 3). The 49ers have allowed six other double-digit performances with two more reaching that level in PPR scoring. Smallwood shares enough of the work with LeGarrette Blount to have Flex value in a gravy matchup.
FAB Dollars: $10-15
Chris Ivory, JAX (55%) – Leonard Fournette is expected back after the bye, but as mentioned last week, Ivory still has plenty left to offer. If Fournette were to have a setback or miss more time, Ivory would be right back in the RB2 conversation.
FAB Dollars: $5-10
FOR THE FUTURE: Handcuffs – Darren McFadden, DAL; D’Onta Foreman, HOU; Matt Breida, SF; Austin Ekeler, LAC; Devontae Booker, DEN; James Conner, PIT; Wayne Gallman, NYG; Mike Tolbert, BUF; Akeem Hunt, KC; Malcolm Brown, LAR
Week 8 Waiver Wire Pickups: WRs
LAST CHANCE: Cooper Kupp and Robert Woods, LAR (42%, 37%) – Similar to Todd Gurley last year, when can we finally say that Sammy Watkins is a lost cause. Both Kupp and Woods have been more productive and reliable than Watkins has. Woods is actually one of the most-consistent receivers of late, despite the low ceiling. Kupp is more boom or bust, but he is seeing good volume in the red zone. Both need to be owned and even started… at least over Watkins.
FAB Dollars: $15-20
Marvin Jones and Kenny Golladay, DET (62%, 15%) – Jones was here last week, and this is a friendly reminder to grab him if out there. Make sure you pick up Golladay too, as while he was overrated to start the season, Golladay is still a nice red zone presence. If Golden Tate is out (sounds likely) Golladay is startable in most formats as the Lions No. 2 receiver.
FAB Dollars: $25-30 for Jones, $20 for Golladay
Corey Davis, TEN (25%) – Reports have Davis returning after the Titans bye. Davis was the most talented receiver in the draft and has Terrell Owens ability. If healthy, he’s the best receiver on the team and is exceptionally talented. Grab Davis if available!
FAB Dollars: $15-20
Josh Doctson, WSH (13%) – It’s happening. Terrelle Pryor was benched in the first half, and Doctson saw his highest snap count of his career. It would be nice to see more targets from Kirk Cousins, but at least Doctson is trending in the right direction, and he’s the most talented receiver the Redskins have.
FAB Dollars: $15-20
Kenny Stills, NYJ (21%) – If Stills’ ownership wasn’t so low, I’d put him in the “last chance” group, but apparently, people continue to dismiss Stills. Once again, Stills outplayed DeVante Parker last year and proved that he’s just as big of a big-play threat. Stills carries more bust potential this week with the matchup, but as mentioned with Moore, there is upside.
FAB Dollars: $15
Mohamed Sanu, ATL (38%) – I’ve always loved me some Snu Snu, and when healthy, Sanu has been quite productive for the Falcons. He’s healthy for now, and Sanu had more targets, receptions and yards in the first half last week, finishing with 10/6/65. The Jets just let Stills and Jarvis Landry – on the arms of Cutler and Moore – to total 20/13/178/3 against them.
FAB Dollars: $10-15
Ted Ginn, NO (51%) – Willie Snead will return at some point… we assume… but even so, it’s Coby Fleener’s value that takes the hit, not Ginn’s. Sure, Snead will steal some targets, but as Ginn showed once again, he’s filling Brandin Cooks’ role and is good for about 80 percent of his value.
FAB Dollars: $5-10
JuJu Smith-Schuster, PIT (14%) – Martavis Bryant is practically begging to get out of Pittsburgh. Unfortunately for him, there is little reason for the Steelers to bend. Either way, Smith-Schuster has outplayed Bryant. Complaining, whining or deleting inflammatory tweets isn’t going to get Bryant back in the Steelers good graces.
FAB Dollars: $5-10
Deonte Thompson, BUF (2%) – Jordan Matthews is still the best receiver for the Bills, but due to the offense and Matthews’ injuries, he hasn’t got on track yet. Thompson just signed with the team and immediately caught all four of his targets for 107 yards. The Raiders are right up there with being the weakest against receivers. Thompson is a deep flier.
FAB Dollars: $5
FOR THE FUTURE: Dede Westbrook, JAX (2%) – Westbrook is due back after the bye, and while Allen Hurns and Marqise Lee had solid Week 7 performances, they haven’t been overly impressive or consistent. Westbrook flashed his potential in the preseason and is great at finding open space/being the reliable, middle of the field weapon for his quarterback. He could end up with nice PPR value.
FAB Dollars: $5
DON’T: Travis Benjamin, LAC (5%) – Buy the cake, not the icing. Predicting the Chargers receivers is nearly as difficult as the Patriots running backs. Honestly, they’re worse than the Patriots backs this year, as Benjamin has three double-digit games and four with 3.2 or less, including a goose egg last week.
Week 8 Waiver Wire Pickups: TEs
LAST CHANCE: Jack Doyle, IND (44%) – Doyle has 25 targets in his last three games with only Evan Engram and Zach Ertz having more for tight ends. Additionally, Doyle is tied for fifth in receptions per game during his last three games (last four weeks). Doyle is averaging six catches, just one half reception less per game than Antonio Brown, Jarvis Landry, Christian McCaffrey and James White during that time. Jacoby Brissett is making Doyle a high value in PPR.
FAB Dollars: $10
Benjamin Watson, BAL (13%) – Watson is a pure PPR tight end, but he’s TE15 in that format with 29 receptions in seven games. That’s even with having no involvement in Week 1. Watson doesn’t have a great ceiling, but if you are searching for some help, Watson has at least 8.8 PPR points in all but one game since Week 2.
FAB Dollars: $5-10
George Kittle, SF (22%) – Kittle proved the risk that comes with a rookie tight end and/or a tight end in a woeful offense. After two solid games – in fact Week 5 was pretty great – Kittle had just two targets for one catch and 16 yards. Nevertheless, tight end is thin, and Kittle’s boom is better than most other waiver options.
FAB Dollars: $5
Vernon Davis, WSH (6%) – Jordan Reed is fortunate to finish any game at this point, and even when he produces (like in the Eagles game), Davis still has upside. He’s risky as the TE2 in Washington, but Davis has nice upside, especially if Reed loses a body part.
FAB Dollars: $5
Tyler Kroft, CIN (15%) – Kroft is entirely touchdown reliant, but that’s not terrible news when a team specifically looks for said target during most red zone trips.
FAB Dollars: $5
DON’T: Austin Hooper, ATL and Jared Cook, OAK (59%, 40%) – Hooper’s two games without Mohamed Sanu (Week 4, the Falcons were without Sanu most of the game) saw 16 targets and 12 receptions. The other four games with Sanu? Just seven targets and six receptions. As for Cook, once again he proves to be one of the biggest gambles in Fantasy. If you enjoy gambling, then sure, pick up Cook, as I dare you to predict when his next good game is.
Week 8 Buy Low and Sell High
Buy Low
Matt Ryan, ATL
Ben Roethlisberger, PIT – Showed a bit of promise that the home game splits will return
C.J. Anderson, DEN
Christian McCaffrey, CAR – More for PPR, as he’s on pace for 100 receptions despite poor use
DeMarco Murray, TEN
Joe Mixon, CIN
Ty Montgomery, GB
Keenan Allen, LAC
Demaryius Thomas, DEN
Alshon Jeffery, PHI
Willie Snead, NO
Sell High
Cam Newton, Jerick McKinnon and Cameron Brate (with an O.J. Howard warning) were here last week. Take note.
Derek Carr, OAK – Always been a better real-life quarterback than Fantasy, and people will go gaga after last week
Aaron Jones, GB – Was here last week, and that didn’t work out, but his value is even higher. The Packers offense will be inconsistent with Brett Hundley, and it’s still hard to trust Jones’ weekly volume
Dion Lewis, NE – Yes, you need to pick him up, but if already own, you can also sell high if an owner thinks “this is the Patriots running back to change everything”
Amari Cooper, OAK – His fans already thanked me, but said “can’t wait for him to dominate the second half” at the same time. He’s Brandin Cooks! Inconsistency is their middle names
Tyreek Hill, KC – Look at his game log. Those offering WR1 value ignore the downside
Jarvis Landry, MIA – Is just two touchdowns short of his career best as a rookie and will take a hit when Parker returns
Will Fuller, HOU – Same as last week/reminder: eight catches, five touchdowns… you tell me if you think that’s sustainable
Jordan Reed, WSH – One of the most talented tight ends in football… one of the most injury prone players in football

Josh McCown has a favorable matchup against the Falcons this week.
(Rob Foldy/Getty Images)
FAB Dollars: $10-15
Wendell Smallwood can help out RB-needy teams.
(Elsa/Getty Images)
Mohamed Sanu is fully healthy now.
(Scott Cunningham/Getty Images)

Game Preview: Eagles vs. Redskins NFL regular season 2017 week 1
Football season is back, Eagles fans. It is time for them Eagles to start a hopeful run to the Super Bowl. Eagles kick off at 1:05 EST at FedEx Field, home of the Washington Redskins. The Birds have had a tough time against the Skins as it’s been 3 years since the Eagles won. Add a year on to that for the last Eagles win at FedExField.
Where to Watch the Eagles vs. Redskins Game
The 2017 NFL regular season week 1 match between the Eagles and Redskins kicks off at 1 P.M. on Sunday, Sept. 9. You can watch the game on TV on Fox. Plus, it’s available on ESPN Raio nationally.
It’s available using an over-the-air (OTA) antenna. Or, streaming services like Sling TV and PlayStation Vue may offer local channels in select markets. There’s also NFL GamePass for $99.99 for live out-of-market preseason games. But its regular season coverage is limited to next-day streaming. Finally, for viewers outside of DirecTV’s coverage area, NFL Sunday ticket provides game streaming.
The Rivalry
The two division rivals have been beefing with each other over the offseason. Lane Johnson wrote in the Players Tribune, “…This team is going to go down to D.C and whup some ass against the Redskins…”. This sparked up newly acquired linebacker Zach Brown. He tweeted and stated in a press conference mocking Lane about his use of PED’s.
Eagles Offseason
The Redskins were -2.5 favorite way back when but the Eagles have since taken over as -1.5 favorites. That changed with the abundance of moves Eagles general manager, Howie Roseman, has made. He acquired corner Ronald Darby from the Bills exchange for beloved wideout Jordan Matthews. This move has immensely improved the Eagles secondary and makes their defense even scarier. The pass rush also improved with the first round pick, defensive end Derek Barnett. Defensive tackle Tim Jernigan came over from a trade with the Ravens and defensive tackle Chris Long was brought over in free agency. The Birds also added some weapons on offense. The big one was big free agent acquisition, receiver Alshon Jeffery. They also added the likes of veteran wide receiver Torrey Smith and fourth round selection, Mack Hollins.
Redskins Offseason
Washington, on the other hand, didn’t exactly have a great offseason. They lost veteran’s Desean Jackson and Pierre Garcon in free agency. Their starting safety Su’a Cravens is mauling retirement and their second best pass rusher, Trent Murphy, tore his ACL. The Redskins also had the whole Scot McCloughan situation. Most importantly, quarterback Kirk Cousins has also come out about being disgruntled with his contract situation and has a weary future in Washington. Now there has been some good with the additions of Terrelle Pryor, Zach Brown, and D.J Swearinger. There was also Jonathan Allen, who would’ve been a bonafide top ten pick if not for a shoulder problem. Redskins are looked at by experts to be in the dweller of the NFC East.
Health
The Eagles are very healthy as no one is injured. The Redskins are also pretty healthy as they only have a couple of people doing limited work. The Eagles seem to have the edge right now regarding health and ability.
Run Game
Both running games are a question mark for their teams. Last year the Eagles were ranked eleventh in running and the Redskins were ranked twenty-first. Both teams have added some new running back via free agency or the draft. The Eagles brought over the unwanted, LeGarrette Blount, from the Super Bowl Champions. Joe Douglas also drafted the FBS leading rusher in the fourth round, Donnel Pumphrey. Corey Clement, undrafted from Wisconsin, has also made the roster after a strong preseason. Doug and company also have Darren Sproles and second-year player Wendell Smallwood to make a crowded backfield. Blount is projected to be the starter but that can change fairly quickly. Wendell Smallwood and Corey Clement both had good preseasons and look poised to take over that job. These backs are going to be behind a good offensive line barring an injury to the big guys. Now for the Redskins backfield. Rob Kelley or as some call him “Fat Rob” emerged as a decent starter for the Redskins. The Redskins also have Chris Thompson, Mack Brown, and Samaje Perine. The Redskins line is highlighted by All-Pro LT Trent Williams. The rest of the line is also pretty good as they have one of the best lines in the league.
Pass Game
Carson Wentz will look to improve upon an up-and-down rookie season. With the new additions and a healthy O-line, Wentz should be able to become the NFC East’s best quarterback. Philly is buzzing about the potential of Wentz as he looks like he is the one. Zach Ertz should be able to get the targets that the Eagles lost of Matthews. The Redskins have the current best NFC East quarterback, Kirk Cousins. His last two seasons have been tremendous and looks like he will do the same this year. He lost his top weapons and Philly killers, Desean Jackson, and Pierre Garcon. He still has Jordan Reed, Terrelle Pryor, and Jamison Crowder. They are good players but a player like “DJax” is an absolute game changer.
Rush Defense
The Eagles did lose run stuffer Bennie Logan to former Head Coach Andy Reid. They replaced him with Tim Jernigan via trade with the Ravens. Linebackers Nigel Bradham, Jordan Hicks, and Mychal Kendricks(From the looks of his preseason) look to make a good group. With the strong front seven the Eagles have, they should be able to have a top ten run defense. New defensive Greg Manusky has a little work to do on the Redskins front seven. Rookie Jonathan Allen, the recent pickup of Zach Brown, and longtime Skin, Ryan Kerrigan head this group.
Pass Defense
Ronald Darby is the Eagles new number one corner. The Eagles gave up Matthews and a third to get him. He had an exceptional rookie season but last year was not the same. He became expendable with the Bills with the new regime wanting their guys. Jalen Mills is going to start on the outside and Patrick Robinson in the slot. Those two raise eyebrows among Eagles fans and have to be improved upon this offseason if they don’t step up their game. The starting safeties are former All-Pro Malcolm Jenkins and Rodney McLeod. Those two make a formidable group. The Eagles strongest group is the defensive line. Fletcher Cox, Tim Jernigan, Brandon Graham, Vinny Curry, and Derek Barnett look to release hell on opposing quarterbacks. Josh Norman is the leader of the Redskins secondary. Across from him is Bashaud Breeland and in the slot is Kendall Fuller. With Su’a Cravens possibly retiring, Deshazor Everett will take over his duties. His new partner in crime is D.J. Swearinger. Pass Rushing for the Skins is looked at to be decent this year. Ryan Kerrigan dominated the game last year going up against Halapoulivaati Vaitai. Allen is going to be a good player and should cause some problems for who ever has to block him.
Special Teams
Little has to be said here. The Eagles have had a top three special team unit for the past few years now. That is because of the great coaching of Dave Fipp and he is still here so expect nothing to change. Sturgis is a good kicker, Donnie Jones can punt, and Rick Lovato has to win the love of the fans after Jon Dorenbos’ departure. Sproles is still one of the best returners in the game and the kick coverage is usually great. Dustin Hopkins, Tress Way, and Nate Sundberg are all decent players. Washington’s special teams are nothing to shout about as it is decent at best. Crowder is a decent returner but they don’t have much other than that.
Overview and Prediction
Both teams are going to come into this game hungry, looking to hit someone who wears a different logo than them. Eagles seem like they are a team that is going to take a big step forward this year. Washington is looking like they are taking another step back as they seem to be a mess. Washington does have enough talent to make this a close game though. The Eagles defense should be able to fly high and stuff the run. Cousins is going to have a decent game but it won’t be enough to beat the Eagles. This game is going to be close and decided by special teams. Eagles come out on top 27-23 on a late TD throw by Wentz.
