A-T-3 225 Cabaret Voltaire
Kirk and Mallinder continue to put out an incredible amount of work in 1983
I'm thinking about Cabaret Voltaire now because The Crackdown was mentioned in Dr Robs article https://banbantonton.com/2023/07/14/looking-for-the-balearic-beat-soundtracking-paradise/
"Nelo [Antonio Dominguez Rey] landed a residency at Pacha, alongside Joan Ribas, where he continued to pursue his “darker” sound – describing the high-point of his time there being when he had 2000 people, in this more commercial venue, dancing to Cabaret Voltaire’s The Crackdown."
The Crackdown album was CV's first release on Some Bizarre/Virgin and got to 31 on the UK album charts. The difficulty of access (getting records) has seeded so many musical movements, the British Invasion groups all mention access to American blues and rock and roll imports, Norther Soul, Reggae Soundsystems, hip hop DJs and producers digging for obscure breaks, the afrocosmic sound in Italy trying records at a different speed came from the limited supply of records in Northern Italy (that and heroin), and in Ibiza DJs competed with each other by travelling to Spain to have the best records. I found the last one fascinating because The Crackdown album and singles have always been ridiculously cheap and easy to pick up in the UK... perhaps it's like Americans, Italian or Japanese record sellers when encountering British diggers? I digress
Fans there's some fancy image processing going on on the sleeve artwork for The Crackdown... the kind of stuff that's foundation of digital image processing now
Crackdown 12" Version more from The Crackdown a few videos below
youtube
Harder to find (at least outside of Belgium) is the 12" Fools Game (Slugging' For Jesus Pt.3) which came out as a double A-side with Gut Level. Pt's 1&2 came out in 1981 on an EP called 3 Crepscule Tracks
Fools Game (Slugging' For Jesus Pt.3)
youtube
The above track was released by Les Disques Du Crépuscule which had a close relationship with Factory (and several other labels), I think they managed the Factory Bénelux sub label - or helped get it running or something, anyway. Factory release Yashar from 1982s 2x45 album as a single. Arthur Baker is working with New Order in 1983, for Yashar they get fellow Planet Rock etc producer John Robie to remix it - personally I prefer the 2x45 version. CV's VHS label Doublevision release Johnny Yesno which includes a video for this version of Yashar. Mute put out Johnny Yesno Redux in 2011, it's supposed to be terrible!
Yashar (John Robie Remix) breakdown at 4.27
youtube
Diskono is on the free 12" that comes out with The Crackdown. It's also on CV's first VHS release Doublevision Presents Cabaret Voltaire

( 😎 / 🐢 )
little tidbits
he gave himself his middle name. leo likes space and space media. he felt naming himself after jim kirk would be a cool move.
he has vitiligo around his eyes in the same pattern red-eared slider turtles do. would be in the same place the red is here.
he is gay !! but he doesn’t know it yet ... it’s a little self discovery journey he’ll have here in elias.
he doesn’t know when his actual birthday is. splinter just assigned them random days.
he does have medical trauma from his days of being experimented on. he just blocks it out really well. the fact that he’s the medic of the gang is ironic. he can help others with ease but the moment someone tries to help him in that sense or he’s taken to a doctors office he freaks out.
the turtle transformation is painful so now leo will only transform if he absolutely has to ... or if he needs to win a dance competition or something because he’ll do whatever it takes to win.
he loves glam rock. if he could have background music when he fights rock you like a hurricane would be playing thank you !!
PRESENT !!
leo has found himself in elias after shredder took their father and destroyed their home. he blames himself for all that had happened. leo had been leader for quite some time now. however, he allowed his arrogance to get the better of him. he put himself and his brothers into a lull of false security because it had been smooth sailing up until now. shit has hit the fan and leo is scrambling to figure out what to do.
he knows that while they may brothers they are not a team. if they’re to save their father and defeat shredder the four of them need to work as a team.
leo’s about to get the character development beaten into him.
this is the first time he’s left new york and been around humans for a long period of time. there’s much for leo to discover about the world and about himself. while he figures out being a leader he might as well enjoy himself right ?
PAST !!
TW: leo’s bio mentions child experimentation.
leo doesn’t remember life before splinter. he jokes that his mind blocked out all the experimentation he had endured as a child but it was true. the trauma of it all was too much so even if he wanted to know it was better off he didn’t.
being the second oldest of four boys, leo was the mostly the comic relief of his brothers. anytime serious emotions were felt he immediately replaced them with jokes. it was easier to joke around than face whatever was brewing under the surface for him because if he faced it, it made it real.
leo was irresponsible. he had so much talent but never applied it. sure he was great when it came to training but everything came naturally to him.
he didn’t have the responsibility or worries that raph did which left him to be lazy and arrogant. leo knew he was great and didn’t waste a moment to let anyone know.
leo felt the most at home in the hidden yokai city. being human felt like a second skin to him. it wasn’t who he really was. leo had accepted long ago he wasn’t destined to be normal but he did so for his brothers sake.
personally, his life was great until splinter designated him leader. he didn’t know why. sure, he joked he should be leader sometimes since he was the face of the group but he never had actually thought about taking on the roll. it was raph’s position. he was the oldest but who was he to tell their father no ? he did know best.
so, leo took over the leader position after raphael confirmed there would be no hard feelings. it wasn’t an easy transition. leo feels he knows best. he listens to himself before he listens to his brothers. it was a learning curve for him to just shut up and listen to others.
while he had his ego, leo still cared deeply about his brothers. he wanted them to be the best they could be. in their own individuals interests but also as a team because the idea of losing them was a thought he refused to think about. he was nothing without his brothers. being so young, fighting the foot clan and trying to stay alive was a lot. leo began to understand why raph was so tired. at the end of the day they were still kids trying to be heroes. the weight of the world was on their shoulders and more importantly it was on leo’s now.
the balance of being leader and brother was a tightrope leo struggled walking along. he thought he was doing good until raph lost it, shredder found them, attacked and took their father. leo realized then that he was failing at both.
FUTURE !!

Jim Kirk’s exes
I decided to sit down and make what I believe to be a comprehensive list of Jim Kirk’s exes. I eliminated any one-sided crushes, “seductions”, and instances where he was deliberately coerced in some way (drugs). While not explicit in the show, I included four men here who I believe he may have had a romantic history with. I also included two “mission romances” - although most of Kirk’s romances are actually long-term relationships.
Jim's exes:
Janice Lester (”Turnabout Intruder”)
Carol Marcus (mother of David Marcus)
Edith Keeler (”City on the Edge of Forever”)
Ruth (”Shore Leave”)
Areel Shaw (”Court Martial” prosecutor)
Antonia (”Generations” - nexus girlfriend)
Miramanee (”The Paradise Syndrome”)
EDIT: Dr. Janet Wallace ("The Deadly Years") - thank you @fictionandtheatre!
Finnegan (”Shore Leave”; academy "bully")
Gary Mitchell (academy, helmsman on enterprise, has known Kirk for 15 years)
Benjamin Finney (named his daughter after Kirk; "close friends" for 15 years)
Commander Jose Dominguez (”The Man Trap")
Mission romances:
Shahna (”Gamsters of Triskelion”)
Odona (”Mark of Gideon”)

"Godflesh on that earfuck of a tour: the Grindcrusher tour circa 1991. The all mighty Godflesh took a day off and played Spanky's in Riverside. Even w/ my earplugs stuffed in my skull they were louder than Motörhead. Shot for Flipside fanzine"
"I stood right in front of bassist G.C. Green the entire set. It was so loud our rib cages were shaking."
"I remember when they finished their set, a girl gave Justin a bouquet of flowers, and he laid his guitar on the floor and started pulling off petals and dropping them on his strings one by one. He was still doing it when we left and we could still hear him when we got into Kirk's disco truck like two blocks away.”

José Dominguez, the First Latino in Outer Space
In that very first episode the transmission is received on the starship Enterprise that Space Commander Dominguez urgently needs his supplies. Kirk tells Uhura to assure him that the peppers are “prime Mexican reds but he won’t die if he goes a few more days without ’em.” Calm down Mexican. You can wait a few more days to get your chile peppers. In the corner of my eye I see Uhura’s back hand twitch and though I never see him on the screen I image José giving Kirk a soplamoco to the face. But this is the year 2266 and there are Latinos in Outer Space! We never see them, but they’ve survived with their surnames and their desire, deep in the farthest interplanetary reaches, for a little heat to warm the bland food on the starbase at Corinth 4. As it is on earth so it shall be in heaven. Ricardo Montalbán will show up 21 episodes later to play a crazy mutant Indio, superhuman and supersmart who survived two centuries to slap Kirk around and take over his ship.
