I get to build a new DnD character soon and by the gods I'm going to make the most pathetic guy. Absolute wet dog. The vibes of a man thrice divorced. A dude who's not told a single truth in months. Just the most pathetic bastard, negative aura, no rizz. And I'm going to make him go through so much shit. He thinks he's at his lowest after the metaphorical divorce and then I come in and smack him across the face, steal his gold and push him in the mud. He's already out in the rain and I'll be the thunder. I'll be the carriage going by, splashing him with dirty water. The branch he stumbles over. The grain of sand in his eye and the splinter on his thumb.

I'm going to build a pool and push him in and then I'm going to remove the fucking ladder and stare at him, drink in hand as he frantically paddles around until just before he stops. And THEN I will rescue him and give him a tiny bit of goodness. Just a bit to keep him alive and hopeful. Send him on his way just like that. All patched up and no visible harm done. All that shit is inside. This badboy can store so much trauma and I'm going to test the limits of how much I can pour in until surface tension breaks.

“Pffft, as if old money was a reason to be impolite to people who just wanted to say hello. I bet if he would take his head out of his butt, we’d actually become good friends real fast.”

Or: Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji meet in high school, and Wei Wuxian sets out to win his friendship.

My Comments:  Ah, me, this was so sweet and pure! It's a fluffy, feel good piece about young love (first love) where everything is starry and nothing hurts. Well, maybe just a little, as these boys figure out themselves and each other, because they're still young and have a lot of growing to do. (I liked the portrayal of lwj as not being neurotypical, and the immediate adjustments wwx made to accommodate that, without fuss or fanfare.)

I never had this young romance experience myself (I started much later) so it's an idealized concept I like to dip my toes in once in a while, and Author conveys the experience well. The A/N at the end begins with a 'roll credits' link that I actually followed, and I'm so glad I did, because the song ('Kiss Me') just perfectly enhanced the entire atmosphere, so I'm feeling all mushy and nostalgic, now.

Wei Ying, warm and golden like the sun.
