Chapter 7 : The Search [ EN ]
TW : mention of death.
--
Edmund
Edmund was in the front with Caspian, he was the one leading the way. He hated the fact that he still remembered the way to Jadis’ castle.
The night was falling so they decided to call it a night. They tethered the horses so they would not run away during the night, then they lit a fire to have a minimum of heat during the night. Edmund announced that he was keeping watch tonight. He would not be able to sleep so he thought it was pointless to entrust the task to someone else.
So, whilst his fellow travelers were sleeping, Edmund was keeping the fire alive and he was stargazing. Whilst he was looking at the sky, Edmund surprised himsef doing something he never did before. He prayed. He prayed to a God he was not sure he believed in, but if there was a right time to do so it was this one.
It was the one because his past was gonna blow up in his face and he knew it. The demons from his past were going to resurface and he was not sure he had the energy to fight them once again. To battle them a second time felt like an impossible task for him because this time, he would be all alone to do so. The first time he had his siblings by his side. Without them, it was a whole different thing.
So, Edmund prayed. He prayed to God or the Gods to help him. He prayed that no harm was done to Dahlia. He prayed that no one would die if there was to be a battle.
“When will we arrive?”
Edmund turned his head towards Caspian when he heard his voice breaking this peaceful silence.
“Tomorrow, probaby. Before night falls, hopefully.”
Caspian nodded, he did not add anything to this very short conversation.
“When we’ll be there, let me go alone.” said Edmund without even looking at Caspian.
“What? Have you lost your mind?”
“If Jadis is actually in that little house she dares to call a castle…” Edmund stopped to talk. “It’s useless for the both of us to die tomorrow. One of us has to stay alive for Dahlia.”
Caspian sat suddenly. He never heard Edmund talk like that, he was talking like he knew he was going to die during this task. And, Caspian had to admit that he was afraid for Edmund, he was really afraid he would do something stupid.
“Don’t you think you should be the one to stay alive for her?”
“Don’t be stupid, Caspian. You’re the King, you can’t just abandon you Kingdom just like that. Believe me, I did it once. The only difference is that you will not come back.”
“What if none of us die, what do you say about that?”
“You don’t know what she’s capable of. Don’t waste your time with hope. Once she made up her mind, nothing and no one can stop her. Trust me on this one.”
Edmund got up and walked a bit to stretch his legs. He also needed time to think.
It was no secret, everyone knew that Edmund would sacrifice his life for any of the Narnians, but Caspian was surprised to find that he would voluntarilywalk into the lion's den. He came to wonder if Edmund was in the right headspace for this mission. Usually, Edmund was able to take a step back and for him, what he was going through was more of an “adventure” than a “mission” but this time, it touched him closely. This time he was directly concerned. And Caspian was really worried about his young friend.
Edmund was near the campment, he was keeping an eye on his fellow travellers and he was keeping his ears open. The young Englishman knew it was time for him to make a final decision.
How far was he willing to go to save Dahlia and stop the White Witch? And, at the time, Peter had raised an important question : what would happen to him if he died in Narnia? Would he just go back to England like nothing happened? Or he would die in both worlds and no one in England would know what really happened to him?
They were valid and justified questions, but at the same time, he was in no real rush to know the answers. Especially for the last three.
Edmund was terrified. He was for different reasons. Four, more precisely.
Firstly, he was afraid of being late and not being able to save Dahlia. Secondly, he was afraid of being face to face with the White Witch again. ( Thirdly, he was afraid of dying, but he would never admit it out loud. ). Fourth, it was no doubt his biggest fear, he was afraid of how many companions he would lose on the way. He still had nightmares from Miraz’s castle attack when he had to watch his people being trapped and be left to their fate. It was in times like these that Edmund regretted having only one life to sacrifice for his people. He had first resented Peter for abandoning them, then Caspian when he found out that he was actually responsible for this massacre.
The night was peaceful. Except for a few curious animals, they had not had any unexpected visitors. So, at the first light of day, Caspian woke up and woke up all his companions and then they all went back on the road. Edmund was in the front with Caspian, once more.
“About what we talked about last night…” started Caspian but Edmund did not let him finish his sentence.
“With all due respect, my decision is made, Caspian. Nothing you will say or do will make me change my mind.”
“It’s insane! You shouldn’t make any decisions in that state!”
Edmund pulled on his horse's reins to force him to stop walking. Caspian did the same as his young friend.
“What is that supposed to mean?” asked Edmund who already felt anger seize him.
“It means you’re blinded by anger and in such a state, you are not in a position to make a rational decision!” answered Caspian, keeping his voice down.
“And who’s more qualified than me to make decisions about me? You, perhaps?”
“Edmund, I -”
“How many times did you face the White Witch? Did you see what she’s capable of? No, I don’t think so. I did! End of the discussion.”
“No! Enough!” Caspian finally lost his cool.
Caspian got off his horse and Edmund did the same. The two men faced each other. First holding the other's gaze before Caspian begins to speak. Or rather starts yelling at Edmund. If he needed to yell at him for Edmund to understand things, Caspian was more than happy to do so.
“You have absolutely no idea what you're saying, do you? You have absolutely no idea how Dahlia will feel when she realizes that you traded your life for hers! You really don't think about her, it's absurd!”
“I’m not thinking about her? Are you really saying that to me? That's all I’m doing! I think about her! I’m thinking about what Jadis is doing to her right now! I’m thinking about how terrified she must be to be locked up in a dungeon! I’m thinking about her, begging and praying for us to come rescue her! That’s all I do, Caspian! I just think about her so much that I can't think of anything else! So don't come and tell me that I don't think of her!”
“If it was true, you would have known that she would rather stay where she is than see you die for her! You weren’t here those last few months. She looked content in front of everyone, but deep down, she was a mess! She was a human wreck! You don’t seem to understand it would kill her if was to lose you definitely! She would not be able to get over it, this time!”
“So what are you proposing? Let's go back to Cair Paravel and wait for Jadis to give her back to us voluntarily because she's suddenly become a good person? I won't let Jadis hurt the only woman I love, Caspian!”
“You are so stubborn! I’m not saying we should not be doing something, all I’m saying is that we should act intelligently.”
Edmund crossed his arms over his chest and took a step back. He nodded at Caspian to keep talking. He had not changed his mind, but he had figured that if he wanted to hurry, it was in his interest to let Caspian do the talking and let him think he was okay with him.
“The White Witch must expect us to run headlong into her trap! You said it yourself, she doesn’t think so we have to. We must be smarter than her, Edmund. It’s the only way to successed. Trust me.”
Edmund nodded, he would not totally admit it, but Caspian had almost managed to convince him to change his mind. Almost. He would follow Caspian's plan, but if he saw he had an opportunity, he would take it. Edmund got back on his horse, Caspian too. They then resumed their journey.
