Reincarnation: Boston To Georgia
It was early morning and my first visit back to the Boston in many months. I was warmed by the familiar surroundings; the ground was coated in snow, the sun just glowing over the horizon; having begun its annual swing towards the east.
The coffee pot was waiting for me in the kitchen, it would be a treat to use the fine grind I had tucked in my carry bag. In route, my favorite Georgian coffee underwent a deep x-ray by security. Agreeing it was not contraband it was returned to me and now on my counter. My daughter had just risen for work and we’d share a cup, poured in my favorite mug, a gift from her to me.
My kitchen window in Boston is adjacent to the woods. One need not live far from the hustle of the main City to be surrounded by forest.
Unwound, gazing out, my heart pattered to see the deer, foraging and nibbling. Deer come up the steep hill that leads to my home, only in the coldest winter weather and not in full light. I excuse myself and dash for my camera. So very agile and alert, they seem to know I have approached my kitchen window closely. Cleverly, I move to the front door, an open it a crack. I snap and click. Pleased to capture them at all, I come back inside satisfied. My daughter had motioned she was heading out or she’d miss the train.
Only a few moments pass, my phone rings. “mom, the deer is stuck in the fence” Oh, no, this can not be good. I look out, returning to the same window. A deer seemed stuck in the neighbors fence. “honey, we will help the deer, you should go to work and drive passed it.”
On closer look the poor animal is lodged precariously. Its head passed through the metal bars and its body pinned at the hip and remained stuck on the other side. I call animal control and the local Police. They arrive and we shared the fence is not ours and the neighbor is not home. Thrashing helplessly, the local authorities were unwilling to cut the fence. This majestic animal is euthanized. I felt terrible and a pool of blood would remain for days. The local authority offers comforting words “we have too many deer”. No help for my sadness, I cry. Its my fault.
I took up nature hiking during my free time while servicing in Georgia. In my youth I was fond of walking trails; reaching places only available by foot. Several months passed after my return from the US and that day. I would visit Kinchkha Waterfall & Okatse Canyon with a fellow volunteer in early Spring and have a most interesting event.
For a day’s visit, we rise early, pack up and are driven by Marshuktka (a shared van) switching several times, a total of 5 plus hours. This type of travel is not luxurious, rather crammed, bumpy, stuffy, cheap and not particularly clean. Reaching the Canyon we drive the final 7 km from the base visitor center to the falls and hike down for the few hours. Only one Marsh reaches the top; once a day up and down.
It was hot for early spring, but glorious. Our trek down followed a rapid rock filled river, passing many local farm animals and spotted manure. Guest homes with modest signs offering rooms for let, villages called out to us offering food and wine, local drivers provided fresh oranges that are closer to lemons. We declined insistent offers to dine in local homes, but made handy the gift of citrus; mixing a refreshing nip at the half-way point. It was nice to have handy a towel in my sack for sticky fingers and an urgent swig should weather turn cold or needed antiseptic.
Stopping, giggling; we can only think how majestic the surroundings. On one side steep multi-colored cliffs cut into mountain, the other rolling valleys lined by makeshift fences in all directions. Towering snow capped Caucus mountains fringe this world in the far distance.

We see a large two story abandon building at road side, we silence ourselves. The two-story building is Soviet Era in style, am-nous; cement gray, wrought iron windows, all the glass cracked or broken and large two dual entry doors padlocked. Yet, large fresh posters were papered to the exteriors announcing events. In front of the building, next to worn broken stairs is a railed iron fence and horned brown cow. The cow had wedged its head through an opening in the fence and could not back out. She was owned, her ears were yellow tagged “GEL” and a number. Thinking she must have been placed here. My cohort thought otherwise; no water nor food nearby and insisting this made little sense and we need to free the cow. Agreed, we discuss the how for a bit.
Even a small cow is not small. And this cow had some nice horns. Like the horse whisperer my friend talks to our new friend, but is fearful and only pets her. I grab my towel and with it in hand see how tolerant she’d be to me manipulating her horns. A gentle sole she allows me to work the horns a bit and then her neck. I ask my cohort to stand on the other side of the fence so she is apt not to pull back or back up. Now we both talk gently. The first attempts fail, and the cow begins to froth at the mouth and kick. I promise her we will help. With a firm grip, I turn her neck to 45 degrees, dip on horn through the railing, then rotate the neck back and squeeze the other horn out. Pleased our cow looks at us briefly and trots home following the river for a quick drink.
The same challenges return again and again. Keep your eyes and heart open to see them and make another path. Moo!
Thanks for listening! Doe
