How do you guys feel about the show Drop Dead Diva? -Mod Bethany
Honestly? I’ve been promising our followers a post on this show for like 6 months or more!
Spoilers below the cut.
(I must say, the images of the main character on Google look… thinner than I remember her.)
So, we have the main character, Deb. She’s beautiful, thin, blonde, unintelligent and fatphobic. The perfect misogynistic stereotype… except, she isn’t. Like at all. In fact, her knowledge helps Jane, the fat busy lawyer, become the greatest lawyer anyone has ever seen. Because as it turns out, Deb’s knowledge of modeling, makeup, and fashion actually matters a lot and is actually important, despite being so different from knowledge about science or law or whatever. Turns out, Deb is pretty smart after all, and is so much more than a pretty face. And she doesn’t have to choose between being beautiful or smart; she proves that you can be both at the same time.
Then there is Jane. The other main character. A super busy lawyer with a big ass body and an even bigger brain. She’s brilliant and good at her job. And she’s beautiful too, just like Deb.
And when Deb thinks that Jane is some unhygienic fatass who doesn’t practice self-care, she realizes that for Jane, not wearing makeup and heels is self-care. When Deb things that Jane isn’t attractive because she is fat, Jane shows her that she is very attractive because she is fat. And Jane teaches Deb to be beautiful on the inside and reach her full potential and helps her become a better person.
For those who haven’t seen the show, you’re probably wondering how these very different women met and shaped each other like this. Well, Deb and Jane died, and then Deb woke up in Jane’s body. All the lessons Deb learns from Jane, she learns without actually talking to her. She learns by becoming a fat person that fat people are amazing and that she needs to stop being so fatphobic and shallow. Amazing, right?
(It’s okay if I lost you here. Watch the show, please just watch the show. Trigger warning for fatphobia in season one and death/gun violence throughout.)
Deb and Jane both defy stereotypes, but it’s not just them. Stacy, like Deb, proves to be much smarter than she thought and learns her knowledge of fashion and reality TV can be just as important as Jane’s knowledge of law. Teri is raunchy, sexual, and isn’t your submissive Asian woman stereotype; she’s a sexy woman with a belly and a brain! And Kim? The mean corporate type? She could have fallen in that stereotype of “mean busy worker lady falls in love, has a kid, quits her job and suddenly becomes nice.” But she didn’t. Instead, she became the fucking boss!
Fuck, I love this show. I think it needs more POC, of course, but omg, it is a feminist show in so many ways and is fucking amazing. Jane is my hero. Well, Deb in Jane’s body is. It’s confusing; just watch the damn show.
Here’s the intro, if that helps.

Drop Dead Diva
Elenco:
Brooke Elliott - Jane Bingum Margaret Cho - Terri Lee April Bowlby - Stacy Barrett Kate Levering - Kim Kaswell
Jackson Hurst - Grayson Kent Josh Stamberg - J. Parker Ben Feldman - Fred Lex Medlin - Owen French
Carter MacIntyre - Luke Daniels Justin Deeley - Paul Brooke D'Orsay - Deb Dobkins Jeffrey Pierce - Ian Holt Natalie Hall - Brittney
Estrelas convidadas:
Muitas celebridades têm feito aparições no programa. Entre elas estão Quinton Aaron, Candice Accola, Clay Aiken, Louis Van Amstel, Jake T. Austin, Diedrich Bader, Lance Bass, Amanda Bearse, Delta Burke, Danielle Campbell, Bruce Davison, David Denman, Patty Duke, Jorja Fox, Vivica A. Fox, Tony Goldwyn, Elliott Gould, Nancy Grace, Kathy Griffin, Tim Gunn, Deidre Hall, Valerie Harper, Gregory Harrison, Natasha Henstridge, Howard Hesseman, John Wesley Shipp, Star Jones, Kim Kardashian, Rami Kashou, Ricki Lake, Sharon Lawrence, Mario Lopez, Joan Rivers, Chad Lowe, MacKenzie Mauzy, Abby Lee Miller, Seamus Dever, Liza Minnelli, Tyler Jacob Moore, Mark Moses, Kathy Najimy, Kelly Osbourne, Jake Pavelka, Teri Polo, Susan May Pratt, John Ratzenberger, Crystal Reed, LeAnn Rimes, Romy Rosemont, Tony Sears, Cybill Shepherd, Jamie-Lynn Sigler, James Snyder, Wanda Sykes, Jennifer Tilly, Gina Torres, Steve Valentine, Nia Vardalos, Dylan Walsh, Wendy Williams, Chuck Woolery, Nick Zano, Serena Williams, Maddie Ziegler, and Paula Abdul, Rebecca Mader Janel Parrish.
Trilha Sonora:
Uma trilha sonora para "Drop Dead Diva" foi lançada em 1 de junho de 2010, por Madison Gate Records. É intitulada Drop Dead Diva (música da televisão Original Series). O tracklist inclui músicas de Brooke Elliott, Margaret Cho, Ben Feldman, Starrett Scott, Confetti, D Alana, Jones Becca, Platinum Pied Pipers, Wendy Lil ', Diaz Madi, Dri, Katie Herzig, Malbec e Morrison Josué.

From 2009 until 2014, there was a television show called Drop Dead Diva. It centered around a conceited model, Deb, who died at the same moment as a plus sized lawyer, Jane, and Deb comes back to life in Jane's body. Deb was engaged to a lawyer named Grayson who recently was hired at the law firm art wish Jane worked. There's an episode in the second season where lawyers Kim and Grayson take on a case for a woman named Allison because the in-laws of her recently deceased wife, Melanie, were suing her for their daughter's earthly possessions, including Allison's home. A simple civil union case, right? No, Allison identified as male when she married Melanie. (Allison is played by Candis Cayne, a real life mtf.) Melanie was with Allison through her transition and supported and loved her until the day she died. After Grayson finds out that Allison is transgender, he is extremely uncomfortable. He couldn't even figure out what gender to put Allison under in his mind. He tells Kim that he wants off the case. Kim says no. She says she needs him on the case, and if he's uncomfortable about it then he should just keep his mouth shut. The case drags on. Lawyers are fighting about legalities. Allison was legally married to Melanie as a "male", but being a woman makes it so she is not counted as the spouse. You get the gist of this. The case ends, ruling in favor of Allison. Melanie's mother is furious. Melanie's father asks to speak with Allison. He and his wife had turned their backs on Melanie. He deeply regretted it. He lost his daughter for good. Allison agrees to speak with him. He tells her that he never saw eye to eye about the whole thing involving Melanie. He thanks Allison for giving his daughter a happy and loving life. He also asks Allison to accept a pocket watch that was his mother's. He was planning on giving it Melanie, but now wanted her have it. She tells him she'll never take off Grayson is having conversation with Jane about the case later on. Grayson: You know, I'm happy for Allison. Love conquered all. Jane:You really believe in that, don't you? Grayson: Allison became a woman, and Melanie still loved her. Their connection transcended their physical bodies. It's the definition of soul mates. In the end, Grayson got it. He realized it wasn't the body. It wasn't the gender. Melanie's father got too. As a transgender male, or ftm, this episode really hit home for me. Because it's not just my mind that male. It also my soul. People find transgenders mentally ill, sick, twisted, an abomination. We're not. We're simply souls that wish be united with our bodies. If could into the soul of person, rather than the outside, nothing like this would matter. Just beautiful thing to think about.

Its 11:36 pm dark
I admit,I never watched the Lifetime Channel when I had cable TV. The only thing I knew about it was that it re-ran “Unsolved Mysteries” and older TV films. The only original series I ever heard about that they aired was a show called “Army Wives”. That was the extent of what I knew about Lifetime.
But since I have dropped cable,I found out that Lifetime has evolved into both airing new original films like “Last Man Standing” and “Blindsided” of which the cheetah and I picked up. Its known for being the anti-Hallmark Channel for women as they do action-adventure films centered around strong women characters. Lifetime has also done more TV series as well and “Drop Dead Diva” was one of these series. It ran for six seasons from 2009-2014 and was produced by Sony Pictures Television. There were 78 episodes produced, since cable TV seasons are shorter then network seasons, instead of getting a 22 episode season run,”Diva” only had 13 shows..which meant a TON of story telling had to be done in a smaller time frame.
youtube
Thanks to our good friends over at Mill Creek Entertainment, shows like “Drop Dead Diva”are getting a chance to be watched by folks like the cheetah and myself who missed out during its original run. And instead of looking for singles seasons that may be hard to find (Highlander, anyone?),Mill Creek has released the entire series in one boxed set which is a great way to enjoy a binge watch without having to worry about missing seasons.
“Drop Dead Diva” is the story of Jane Bingum, a plus sized lawyer who dies by saving her firm’s boss who was having an affair with a woman who didn’t know was married. At the same time budding model Deb Dobkins is killed while she is talking on her cellphone. When Deb goes to heaven, she meets an angel named Fred who tells Deb she has led a completely nothing life. Deb wants to go back to Earth and a little miffed at Fred, she presses the “Go Back” button but ends up in Jane’s body. While Deb is still Deb,she gets to retain Jane’s mind which includes a sharp legal brain. But otherwise,Jane is gone and Deb is going to have to naviagate her life in Jane’s body.
Fred is sent to Earth as Deb’s guardian angel and he tells Deb the rules,no one can know Deb is still here, she has to become Jane in thought and deed. This becomes incredibly challenging as Deb’s boyfriend Grayson, has just landed a job at Jane’s firm the week both women died,in fact Jane was the one who interviewed Grayson.
Deb also has to learn her “new” job as a lawyer quickly as well as deal with her firm’s politics and co-workers who weren’t exactly kind to Jane..with Kim Kaswell being her biggest pain in the ass. But she also has allies in Stacy, the only person who knows Deb’s secret and Teri,Jane’s loyal assistant and friend.
This show is a comedy-drama with fantasy elements thrown in and it works very well. There isn’t any huge heavenly “saves” like on “Highway To Heaven” or “Touched By An Angel”. Deb is pretty much on her own as she learns to love herself in a plus sized body. Each episode features a couple of cases for Deb to work on with Deb adding in her own style with Jane’s legal brain. Deb encounters key moments from both Jane’s and her past lives and has to make adjustments which includes Kim and Grayson eventually become a couple and start dating. Deb is also quite shocked when she finds out that Jane was actually married to a man named Ethan, even though the marriage was a sham,Jane did have feelings for him at one time.
This series is told like a soap opera with several different stories winding through several seasons but for the most part, the court cases are settled by an episodes end. While “Drop Dead Diva”did stuggle a bit towards the end,the producers did get a 6th and last season to wind up the various stories and end the series with a proper and fitting ending.
I loved the cast on “Diva” very much and I really enjoyed several performances given by some very talented people led by the amazing Brooke Elliott as Jane/Deb. She is simply amazing in a dual role and worked her ass off making Jane a complex and rich person. Her compassion and raw honesty are worn on her sleeve and you feel like Brooke is just playing herself,Jane is really Brooke in real life. While appearing in only 9 episodes,I have to give Brooke (I know, right?) D’Orsay who played Deb Dobkins before she was put into Jane’s body. I really thought it was a smart move by show creator Josh Berman to make Deb very likable and sweet in her own right. While Jane and Deb walked in different worlds, they were also very decent human beings. Most shows would have forced Deb to be a bitch on wheels that has to learn to be a “good person” but that such a cliche and it was refreshing to see that Deb was a good person and a good friend even before she becomes Jane.
The supporting cast, led by Margaret Cho as Teri Lee and April Bowlby as Deb’s best friend Stacy, are all very good and fit their roles. You can read more about them here. Being this was a Lifetime show, the guest stars were also for the most part, pretty strong as well with a ton of well known names and faces including Bruce Davison,Leelee Sobieski,Nia Vardalos,Teri Polo and even Kim Kardashian. I enjoyed watching “Drop Dead Diva” and definitely can see why it ran for six years and had a very dedicated and passionate fan base. And now thanks to Mill Creek Entertainment, you all can experience quite a charming and emotionally moving show by buying the complete series in one collection. “Drop Dead Diva” can be bought by going to the Mill Creek Amazon page.
Have you ever watched “Drop Dead Diva”? We would like to hear your thoughts on the show and its cast so feel free to drop a comment or three below.

Kate Levering
Article by Lauren Weigle
William Esper once said that, “Actors think more with their hearts than with their heads.” Such is the case with professional actor Kate Levering. She puts her whole heart into all that she does, particularly when it comes to her career. Having conquered both the big and small screen in addition to Broadway, Levering is currently seen every Sunday on the hit series Drop Dead Diva. Don’t worry… she’s not the hardcore bitch that she plays on the show. She’s actually a friendly, family-oriented, down-to-earth chick who’s not all wrapped up into the Hollywood scene. If you don’t believe me, read here for yourself.
Let’s dive right in… You’ve had guest spots on so many prominent TV series’ including Las Vegas, Ghost Whisperer, CSI: Miami, and countless others. What other hit shows from your resume can you tell me about?
Let's see...Cashmere Mafia was a super fun, but short-lived television show that unfortunately died because of the writers’ strike. A series called Kevin Hill. LOTS of guest star roles, and obviously Drop Dead Diva for the last 3 years.
I understand you originally got your start in theatre and Broadway. Tell me about it.
I started dancing professionally when I was 13 years old. By the time I was fifteen, I was doing a production of West Side Story in Europe and starting to leave school a lot to perform. I actually missed my high school graduation because I was performing in Boston, which kinda makes me sad when I think about it now. Musical theater was my first love and so moving to New York to pursue Broadway after I graduated high school was a no brainer...it was the natural next step for me.
Is Broadway still on your mind or are you more focused on TV and film?
I've taken a very long break from performing on stage. I did six Broadway shows in the eight years I lived in New York...my body needed a break! Now that I've been away for so long I definitely have an itch to come back. The high of performing live is a craving that never goes away for me.
Are there any Broadway roles out there right now that you would love to take on?
Roxie Hart (in Chicago) is a dream role for me. I gotta get my agents on that! Also, they are about to revive Annie. I think I could play Grace Farrel.
I bet! So, let’s talk about movies. What was your experience on Like Dandelion Dust? I see it won some cool awards.
Like Dandelion Dust was a labor of love, no question. A lot of people poured their hearts and souls into making that movie, including all the actors. The acting was highly emotional all the time, so for me, I lived in a pretty dark space for the month that I shot...after the movie wrapped it took me a bit of time to emerge from that place. I'm really proud of that film. Everyone's love of the project shows on the screen.
Let’s talk about your role on the TV show Drop Dead Diva as Kim Kaswell. I hear Kim is quite the tough cookie.
Ha! Yes, Kim can definitely be a bitch.
Well, other than her pure bitchiness, what do you feel your character brings to the show?
Kim plays many roles. She can show up as the antagonist, the sassy, sexy opportunist/manipulator, a shark in the courtroom, and, as of recently, we've been seeing a much softer side to her. She had her heart broken at the end of last season, so that kind of cracked her wide open.
So, other than reading a “How To” book on being a bitch, what went into creating the character of Kim for you personally?
I was on another law show for a season, so I was familiar with the procedural feel of spending days at a time shooting in a courtroom...those are loooong days! Personally, I actually sat in a courtroom for a month with a family member and was intimately involved in a trial. I can say this: TV cases are much more exciting than real life.
I guess I’ll just stick to Judge Judy for my next court visit then, huh? So what’s life like on the set of the show?
I love going to work every day. Soup to nuts, I love everyone who works on our show...our crew is amazing, our cast gets along incredibly well. Overall, I'd say there is a lot of laughter. It's just a fun and safe environment to be creative in.
How about the behind-the-scenes? What’s life like with the cast off-set?
We are all great friends. We shoot on location in Georgia, and it's kind of like being at summer camp for five months. We're all away from our homes and significant others. The result is that we end up spending 24/7 with each other. We work all day together, go eat dinner, study our scripts, and hang out on the weekends. I think the chemistry of our relationships off-screen translates to the work. It's kind of genius really...throw a bunch of insecure actors into an environment where they're isolated and don't really know anyone and watch them grasp onto each other, and only focus on work.
Well, tell me about when you’re away from the cast. What’s daily life like for you outside work?
I spend a lot of time with my dog, my family, and my friends. I live between Newport Beach and LA, so you'll rarely catch me in LA as a part of "the scene". The game of Hollywood has never appealed to me, so I tend to stay as far away as I can. When I'm not working I have a totally different life and am constantly traveling. I actually leave for Africa on Friday!
Africa?! Wow! You’ll have to tell me all about that trip! So, with all your traveling, work, etc., do you have much time to actually watch any of the shows you’ve been on?
I always try to watch Drop Dead Diva every Sunday. When we're in Atlanta the cast will try to watch it together. For me, it's nice to see the result of those thirteen-hour shooting days. People might be amazed to know that it takes eight, approximately thirteen-hour days to make 45 minutes of television! Plus, it's nice to celebrate everyone's work.
Are you one of those people who cringe watching themselves onscreen or do you love every moment?
I have been known to get up and walk out of a room, yes. There are times when I'm proud of my choices and times when I cringe, moan, and groan. It's part of being an actor...the performance is rarely just what you want it to be.
