Through the Looking Glasses: AR’s Platform Will Be Right Before Your Eyes by Ravi Jain

In my last blog post, I looked at the rise of wearables up to where we are now, with the predominant category being the wrist-mounted product market which is often broken into subcategories of smartwatch and fitness tracker, though those are quickly converging. In fact I would posit that one could map these broad categories of growth in wearables looking ahead to 2020 and beyond:

Wrist mounted

Head mounted (goggles/glasses)

Ear mounted

Skin patches

Misc clothing

Again, this is just my take after ingesting a lot of analysis on wearables over the last few weeks. For the purposes of this post, I want to take a look at the future with just one of those segments, the market for head mounted wearables. And after lumping categories together, I will “de-lump” by just taking a close look at the smart-glasses market and the implications of that market.

So let’s define what we mean by smart-glasses. I would consider how we’ve named our phones “smart phones” based on their computing capabilities so I would extend that modifier’s purpose to the phrase of “smart glasses”: eyeglasses with integrated computing power that both ingest and create content and data. There are some products that have come to market that fit this description but none have made enough of an impression to be considered significant players in the overall wearables market.

To really understand how the smart glasses market will emerge, we would need to take a deep dive into the goggles market which for now is primarily driven through gaming and Virtual Reality experiences. Many of the technical and UX improvements in headset goggles can be leveraged by smart glasses. And in fact, recent news of Apple’s entry into this market suggest this is a path they will take by first offering a headset goggle product before following up with smart glasses.

In real broad terms, a key differentiator between goggles and glasses is that the head-mounted goggles are a fully closed visual system: you essentially are looking at two small screens that utilize algorithms to simulate depth. Some do have cameras that can effectively show you what you are looking at, often with the intent of then manipulating that visual, but still it’s not actually what you are looking at, it’s still one generation removed. Thus the strong push for gaming and other virtual reality experiences that showcase the technology. Why replicate your humdrum apartment when you can instead be looking at the desert of Tatooine (or Jakku for any Star Wars neophytes!)

[completely esoteric sidenote: my first VR experience was actually when Verizon gave out free Google cardboard headsets that enabled one to experience Star Wars original VR content, way back in December 2015!]

Smart glasses on the other hand are devices that have lenses that you can actually look through. So when you look at your hand and shake it, it’s your hand, not the giant lobster claw you might see while wearing an Oculus Rift headset. However the lenses do offer the ability to also act as a screen to overlay content/information. I’m going to write that word out again, because it’s an important one. Hell, I’ll even all-caps it!

OVERLAY

The difference in overlaying content on top of “reality” vs. 100% manufactured content is what differentiates AR from VR. Augmenting reality by adding to it vs completely creating a new “virtual” reality. A factor of the experience of this is also a “sometimes on” vs “always on” experience. Some of the user experience challenges with VR were reports of “VR sickness” or what some people with far greater science understanding than me term “vergence-accommodation conflict” (which coincidentally will also be the name of my upcoming EDM-themed band… just kidding!)

My most extended VR experience was with the mind-blowing installation my multimedia artist/musician/creative-all-around Laurie Anderson out at MASSMOCA, the Chalkroom. I spent a good 20 minutes or so flying around this amazing immersive space and as I staggered out of the room to the rest of the galleries, I definitely felt residual queasiness. It was a touch of motion sickness with just general mental unease��� wasn’t horrible and I’m glad I did the experience, but it was definitely kind of like an art hangover!

I would imagine an overlay experience to be much less disruptive (and I say imagine because I haven’t had the opportunity to try any existing smart glasses.) Instead of your entire field of vision being hijacked or replaced, additional contextual content is placed over this. Some mainstream AR experiences that might help one visualize this include Pokemon Go.

But instead of animated cuddly figures, you might have arrows that show you directions to the nearest coffee shop. Or perhaps it’s a translation of a sign to a language you understand. Or background information about sculptural pieces in a outdoor park. It’s adding a layer of data driven content to your existing environment.

Beyond the AR capabilities, smart-glasses could also work with your phone in a similar way that smartwatches do, by enabling phone calls and/or video chats; by offering customizable notifications or messages. The challenge as with any product is to make the user experience an intuitive one and make the price point not a prohibitive one. Based on Apple’s record of success with transforming existing digital products like mp3 players, mobile phones and fitness trackers into the iPod, iPhone and Apple Watch, I do have confidence that their product could be the one to make smart-glasses mainstream.
