Perks of Booking a Kids’ Birthday Venue in Houston | Wonderwild
Tumblr media
Is there anything as hectic as planning and managing a kid’s birthday party? Not only do you go on breaking your break, but you also must manage kids running amok around the house. It is total mayhem! However, you can still manage to throw an amazing party if you book a kids birthday party venue in Houston. Your kid can pick a favorite theme, and you can order suitable decoration items for the party venue. In a nutshell, you will have to deal with zero hassles.
That’s why this article reflects on the special benefits parents can unlock by booking a b’day party venue in Houston.
The Real Feel of a Private Party
Booking a birthday party venue for your kids means finding a way to privacy. When privacy is an issue at your place, take your party to an indoor playground. The playground facilities usually have a designated party room where they can have the best time of their life. You do not need to worry about your children getting lost. Moreover, your kids will go bonkers with the private play area.
Yes, your children can hang out with their friends’ sans the fear of coming across strangers. Furthermore, it is easier to keep an eye on your little ones because of the well-planned layout.
Extensive Food Menu Available
Kids’ birthday party venues like Wonderwild encourage clients to bring their own food; however, the places also provide food services. You can have the food delivered at the location right before your guests enter the party room.
On the other hand, you can leave the food orders at the birthday party venues. For example, Wonderwild orders pizzas from Domino’s and lets you choose the one-topping or multiple-topping pizzas. While alcoholic beverages are strictly prohibited, the party venue allows bringing your own beverages without additional charges. If you do not have time to pick up the beverages, order water, juice boxes, or Coke.
Different Play Sections for Different Age Groups
You cannot expect 10-year-olds to have a gala time where toddlers are playing. For example, Wonderwild offers Wonderwilder and Wonderwild. The latter is suitable for kids between 5 years old and 11 years old. On the other hand, Wonderwild is highly recommended for 8-year-old kids and under.
In addition, you can bring kids below 5 to the Wonderwilder for bike tracks, jumping pillows, and croc sides. Even though the giant rope courses are not designed for kids under 5, parents can allow their 3-year-old or 4-year-old to climb on the rope. With these aspects in mind, you should contact Wonderwild and make the best out of the party packages. For more information about open indoor play areas in Houston, check out their website!

the lore of the bands before (a pre-waterparks primer)
ok i’ve decided that i know too much and wanna make a livejournal style primer about the history of the band(s) before waterparks (pictured below) for anyone that wanted to know what the hell ive been talking about again for like the past two months. this shit’s legit man it has citations (and my commentary).
Tumblr media
the blue poptarts
let’s begin with the first known form of the band, the blue poptarts, started roughly in 2004 under an unidentified different name with different members (source). also here’s their (extremely broken) myspace through the wayback machine
the band consisted of four people: awsten knight (vocalist, guitarist, keys), jawn rocha (guitarist, vocals), chris walzel (bassist, vocals), and owen marvin (drums)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(owen: far left, chris: kid with glasses, awsten: green shirt, jawn: kid that looks the least white) (extra note: i am so glad i never tried starting a band when i was 14)
now, what does a self proclaimed “radxcore, crunkadelique, yay, choloxcore, rainbowxcore, and applexcore” band sound like? like a band you used to listen to in like 2008 when you wanted to be ~different~ and when you discover it years later, you realize it sucks. that’s basically it.
they had an album called electric birthday party produced by jonathan cook (forever the sickest kids) (source) and the album art is still very endearing.
Tumblr media
their recorded songs that can still be found include:
all the dinosaurs are dead
the airplane’s not supposed to fly this high
it ain’t easy being gangsta
the ballad of chadam kool
and here are some performances by them (some under very different lineups):
at a hot topic (blurry version here)
pulling an i’m so sad, so very, very sad with a song called AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AA
a live cover of something where jawn is the only person i recognize in the lineup
one where the lights are just super red
one from that same night but in blue
this absolute wreck where awsten’s screams sound like pig squeals
my personal favorite, their last show where there is silly string, awsten is screaming, and also he hangs off the ceiling
there’s a chapter in awsten’s book about the band’s escapades after a hot topic show in little rock, arkansas (here’s the tour poster for that if you’re so interested) where former member michael austin brought random hot topic employees into their hotel room and gave the members off brand viagra which made jawn think he was dying from it because he had suddenly gotten sick (he actually had food poisoning from the pizza they ate). yes this is all real.
after five years of being one giant wreck of a band with rotating members, the blue poptarts had their final show under that lineup in september 4, 2009 where they opened for blood on the dance floor (source) and presumably awsten got offered crack cocaine by them behind the venue (source). but there was more in store for some of them...
over 9000
you may ask, why the fuck is the title of the next section a dead dragon ball meme from 2006? and i have to answer with that is the actual name of the next band. it was 2010. just be glad it didn’t end up being the name of a rage comic.
awsten was very adamant about promoting his shitty little bands with his shitty little flyers outside of shows in the houston scene and one of these flyers ended up in the hands of otto wood, who contacted them through myspace (big deal because he literally does not have social media) and joined as a drummer for the new form of the band: over 9000 (also abbreviated as o9k or wo9k (we are over 9000)).
the lineup was still the same outside of the replacement of owen with otto and after the departure of chris, it was just three of them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this band is a little easier to trace because they were actually getting somewhere (at least they thought but we’ll get to that later), awsten mentioned some of it in his book, and also bc tumblr was rising in popularity at the time and sometimes you can actually find posts from that time if you look hard enough on here (a prime example is the @fuckyeahwo9k with old pics n shit). going off that, here is an also broken wayback capture of their blog before its deactivation and their twitter.
but anyways, back to the band. compared to its first iteration, over 9000 were more X___X than XD!!!!!! if you get what i’m saying. still very scene, but like not in the rainbow induced vomit way of last time.
their first official show was on march 13, 2010 as dated by this video post-show of awsten going hardcore on the macarena. but their first known show with otto was on january 30, 2010 (source: this girl’s slideshow) (note: they were still technically called the blue poptarts at this point) at the source’s 16th birthday (i don’t know why them but it was 2010 *shrugs*). also the night before that birthday show was the events of the only youtube video on their channel where otto attempts to smother awsten with a pillow for being annoying.
there are literally no studio recordings of their songs available so complied below are shitty live recordings of some of the songs i could salvage (general warning for heavy strobe and flashing lights)
youcan’taskquestionsduringmovienight
everything opens with an o / blood bath and beyond (note: these are two separate songs just in the same video and the second song is cut off at the end)
a car full of angry kids
some other songs they did live were either old blue poptarts songs or lost with lyrics only found here and here is someone with the old song files on their computer
here’s a setlist they had around the time (source)
Tumblr media
the shows weren’t near the amount of horrible chaos i documented earlier but rest assured, there are other videos at the least:
slideshow of their first official show
two povs of otto going unreasonably hard on the drums (king you are already carrying them you don’t have to do this)
the blue poptarts song, i set aquaman on fire, where awsten and jawn do a crabcore squat at some point. it’s very funny.
like less than half of a song where otto gets on his drumset to yell “MAKE NOISE” and it ends with awsten and jawn trying to situate the crowd
a very crunchy acoustic performance
their “no shirt, no shoes, no bass, no problem” show after chris left
supposedly the album was supposed to be called xThuggin Rhymesx (source) but i still have no idea if it was just a filler name / inside joke, but honestly given the fact that their name is over 9000 and it was 2010, i wouldn’t be surprised if this was the actual name.
there’s also only like two interviews of them in existence: a casual one with hometown friends/fans and one with a music magazine which both segue into the next part of all of this
the boys got the chance to record an album in detroit (images of the studio they were living in can be found on jawn’s twitpic here, here, and here) at 37 studios.
i’ll just let awsten explain the end of the band (passage taken from his book)
So the newly-formed band I was in with Otto was literally the product of us being bullied into making convoluted, garbage progressive rock. The music sucked. We weren’t good at performing it. We just sucked in every way, but that didn’t stop us from promoting it extremely hard and pushing it on the ears of anyone who had the displeasure of crossing our paths.
As soon as I graduated high school, we got an opportunity to work in Detroit with a certain band that a couple of us liked at the time [I See Stars], and we immediately jumped at the opportunity. The “manager” who set it up for us seemed very interested in our music and helping us grow as a group, so I was sold. I was so absolutely set on making the band work that I was willing to sink every penny I had into this trip, including any and all graduation money I received. We all did.
Upon arrival, we realized that this was a complete and utter shit-show.
We would be in Detroit for two weeks, essentially locked in the studio (we left the complex one time for a couple hours in the 14 days we were there) and were about to learn the hard way that most people in the “industry” don’t give a fuck about anyone but themselves. The amount of things we paid for and never got was staggering.
When we first showed up at the studio, the lowlife producer yelled, “Well, where’s all your fucking gear?” He asked us this despite the fact that being able to use their in-house gear was a fee included in the thousands of dollars we had somehow been able to scrounge together between the three of us.
He then tried charging us money to sleep on the mattresses that were in a side room, another cost that was already included in what we had paid. There was then a closed-door yelling match that we could clearly hear between the producer and the “manager” who had booked us this trip. We were off to a good start, but rest assured, it got much worse.
The producer we were paying to work with was celebrating his birthday by getting drunk and staying home, which extended through our entire trip. We never met the guy. We didn’t get to use the gear or equipment we paid to have our songs recorded with. The guy from the band we liked rarely made it into the studio, and if he did, he was always about seven hours late (even though he evidently lived twenty minutes away).
On what was supposed to be a long, productive day in which we went over our songs and restructured them to make them better, we waited around for twelve hours before he finally came in as the sun was setting. We had been so excited to have some creative input from a guy we respected, and by the time he arrived we were completely deflated.
“Fellas!” he cheerily greeted us. (What smug piece of shit has the audacity to walk in twelve hours late to work, where people are literally waiting for him to get started, and yell “Fellas”? Drop, you weak fuck.) “Sorry I’m late, but I brought chips!”
He threw a couple bags of Funyuns and Salt and Vinegar chips on the table in our direction. It’s hard to imagine a more creatively degrading situation, but it’s situations like these that have hardened me in a creative and business sense. He departed after an hour and a half.
I saw him again years later when we played the Vans Warped Tour in 2016, and I don’t think he recognized who I was, because he introduced himself to me with an ugly, “Sup brahhh?” Sometimes it’s hard not to punch someone in their shitty little rat face. Therapy makes you want to go back and defend past you from bad people/situations, and 2018 me would absolutely go back to 2010 and break this guy’s nose for disrespecting me, wasting my time/creative energy, and essentially stealing all my money.
We also didn’t get the new promo pictures, the new website design layouts, critiques on our songs from a “songwriter’s” standpoint, and were constantly being guilted for being there. One day, the “manager” who set this whole thing up asked me to PayPal him $30 for gas so he could come in to the studio and see how we were doing. I was 18 and barely had money to get food at that point, but I sent it anyway because I desperately wanted them to like me. He never came in that day.
I spent most of my time there riding a skateboard through the halls and listening to Death Cab and Gorillaz remixes, hopelessly waiting for people that didn’t care we existed to come help us craft a listenable release and give us the body of work we paid for. I didn’t want to tell my already suspicious parents how bad the trip was turning out and how terrible our circumstances were because I didn’t want my mom to worry and I didn’t want to prove that their skepticism was justified, even though it definitely was. So I avoided checking in, blaming it on business, and when we would talk, I’d tell them things were “going well!”
We found ourselves in a panic on our last night in the studio, given that we were nowhere close to being done recording on account of the dumbshit producer never showing up and working painfully slow whenever he did decide to swing by. The band guy had stopped coming in altogether. We never even met the producer who we had paid to work with originally. The bullshit in-house producer we’d been recording with was severely drunk to the point where he’d passed out on the couch and we were desperately sifting through Cubase tutorials (the recording software he was using, when we were promised Pro Tools) on YouTube, trying to figure out how to operate his bullshit system. We were stressed beyond belief and gradually coming to the realization that this was all fucking whatever and it wasn’t going to be completed.
We never got our songs back. All of us were extremely broke and pissed off. No one gave a fuck about us and we were nowhere remotely close to legitimate. Stuff like this put me in a mindset where I really don’t give a shit about networking or making nice with bands, and I still accidentally subconsciously carry that with me today. Rappers are funnier than band guys and also aren’t competitive with you, so it’s more fun to be around them.
When we got home, we had a show booked at a high school and morale was at an all-time low. All of us were pretty bummed about the status of the band and we were only holding on because it was fun to play shows.
Fun fact: on the drive up to the school, a very scary gentlemen next to us at a red light who also had his window rolled down pointed a gun at us and we ran the light through traffic to avoid getting maybe shot, Houston, baby!!!!!!
Unfortunately, the show went fucking terribly. The bright side is we only sucked in front of 15 people. Actually, that’s a negative too, dang. We had gotten used to it at this point, but Otto was always really hard on himself and us after every show, so we got used to it when he wouldn’t talk to us after a set. It came as no surprise when we got the silent treatment while he loaded up his drums. However, we weren’t prepared to discover that he was going to drive away and never speak to us again, thus ending the band. We didn’t talk after that, even as friends.
tl;dr: they had a shitty time in detroit trying to record because it was a giant scam and disastrous on all accounts. their last show was at a high school (videos of it linked in the passage) after they came back and after the show, otto ghosted them completely, ending the band and their friendship.
yea kind of a depressing end compared to the rest of it huh. but of course, this was not the end of everything.
the early beginnings of waterparks
in 2011, awsten started waterparks when he was 19. he was on the verge of dropping out of college. he also had a leg tumor. he had a lot of shit going on. while otto was ghosting him and jawn was a high school senior gearing up to go to college, one of waterparks’ earliest lineups was with owen marvin on drums and gage matthieu on bass and unclean vocals. their first and only music video with this lineup can be found here (password is WTRPRKSDICKPICS bc that was the name of their snapchat and also when i posted this to youtube awsten nerfed me)
eventually, that lineup dissolved and awsten was left finding a drummer again and had to contact otto as he was the only other drummer he knew. awsten had already sent him their first ep and otto loved it (source) and otto said yes when asked to join parx’s practice (the full story can be found here and continued here).
eventually, they got geoff wigington on guitar (and also kicked gage out) and the official waterparks lineup was born :)
Tumblr media
bonus: geoff wearing an old o9k shirt for their new wave video
Tumblr media
where are they now?
while the fate of chris and owen remains unknown to me, i feel like it’s kind of obvious what happened to the three i emphasized on
Tumblr media
awsten: he’s the singer-songwriter and guitarist of waterparks. he dyes his hair a lot and is a capricorn sun and gemini moon. this should tell you a lot about him. he types in all caps on twitter and i’ve had him muted for over a year. i used to bully him on here before he deleted his tumblr and i still have no idea if he ever saw my messages. also one time he submitted a text post to waterparksdrama asking how big his own dick was.
Tumblr media
otto: the drummer and eye candy of waterparks. he has no social media other than a twitter he abandoned after making three tweets in 2011 and an instagram awsten made as a joke for him that will eternally be empty. he’s basically amish in my eyes and he climbs trees, gets chased by bees on his farm, and plays baseball. i’m pretty sure he’s immortal. also i have to live with knowing details of his sex life. long story. my chemical romance makes him dance =) (side note: i will eternally be jealous that he saw them on pro rev 2007)
Tumblr media
jawn: waterparks’ photographer and friend. he used to play bass during their early shows after otto came back and geoff got added to the roster. besides photography, he does twitch streams either about his photo editing process or just playing silly little games. he has a glowing keyboard so you can tell he’s legit about this shit.
so yeah! all’s well that ends well and all that shit. they seem to be having genuinely decent lives. all i ask is that if you’re gonna spread this shit do not fucking do it in the eyeshot of anyone mentioned here (i.e. post about this on twitter or instagram) i’m just trying to get a story straight and i don’t think they really want to remember this but other than that, i hope this informed you and got the whole story down.

Tumblr media
--------------
Taehyung was in the middle of a meeting when his phone buzzed. His ears twitched at the low buzzing- he had initially decided to ignore it till after the meeting was over. But with how much it was vibrating, he sighed in mild annoyance before taking his phone out as discreetly as he could to not alert anyone else.
His annoyance got replaced with curiosity when he saw it was a new group chat named ‘SURPRISE BITCHES’. Clicking open the chat box, Taehyung almost snorted at what was on his screen, alerting the others but he paid no mind to the questioning gazes.
           ~Jinnie created group~
~Jinnie named the group ‘SURPRISE BITCHES’~
Jinnie : THIS IS A GROUP CHAT FOR ALL YOU BRATS TO PLAN A SURPRISE PARTY FOR MY BIRTHDAY
Jinnie : Make sure it’s AMAJIN *laughing sticker*
       ~Jinnie has left the chat~
  Kook : ...what just happened
Park Brat : We have to plan a party for hyung now, I guess?
Kook : Yeah, no shit shorty but wth was that o.O
The rest of the chat had transformed into the two arguing with each other. Taehyung put his phone down and leaned back into his chair, closing his eyes and rubbing his forehead. He was surrounded by children. Absolute children.
--------------
After the meeting had ended, Taehyung was walking back to his office when his phone rang, playing a sound akin to... Spongebob’s laugh? Taehyung’s ears stood straight on alert as he checked his screen, eyebrows raised in surprise at the odd tone - someone had changed his ringtone again.
Seeing it was a call from none other than the soon-to-be 29 years old, Kim Seokjin, he picked up the phone with a sigh, “What’s up, hyung?”
“Did you see the group?”
“Hello to you, too, I haven’t had lunch yet, have you? My day has been pretty busy, thanks for asking,” Taehyung started, completely ignoring what the older man had asked, snickering when he started scolding Taehyung on the other side.
“Stop being a brat! Did you see the group I made?” Jin whined. Taehyung could almost imagine Jin’s furrowed brows as he paced around wherever he was.
“Yes hyung, I saw the group you made,” Taehyung finally answered, smiling softly when he heard a happy gasp come from the excitable squirrel hybrid.
“So?”
“So what?” he asked, trying to keep a neutral face while passing by employees when he heard a grunt on the other line.
“So, what did you plan? What are you getting me?”
“I thought it was supposed to be a surprise?”
“Yeah but I want to know!”
“Oh well, if you really want to know,” Taehyung started, humming as if in deep thought, “we haven’t planned a single thing.”
“You’re joking, right?”
“When have I ever joked around? I am the most serious person you can ever meet,” he announced dramatically, stepping into his office and closing the door behind.
“You’re no fun, I’m calling Namjoon.” Jin huffed before hanging up, giving the other man no time to reply.
Taehyung laughed to himself, deciding to call the group to check on the plan, given they had made any rather than arguing like before. Taehyung would have their head if they didn’t make this the best birthday for Jin.
--------------
It was the day of the party. Everyone had arrived at the venue, Taehyung noted as he scanned the place - except two people. The two who were in charge of the cake.
He was about to call one of them when his phone buzzed in his pocket. Taking out the device, he instantly picked up the call when he saw the caller ID being displayed as ‘Kook’.
“Where are you two?! Hoseok and Yoongi hyung are gonna bring Jin here any minute! Even Namjoon hyung has arrived!”
“Okay, don’t get mad…” Jungkook started after Taehyung finished his rant, “we sort of have a problem.”
“What problem?”
“Well, you see. Uh. Well. Listen, don’t be mad,” the bunny hybrid stuttered, causing Taehyung’s concern to rise tenfold.
“Oh give me that,” he heard Jimin say on the line before his voice chimed in, “yeah, hi. I know we were supposed to bring the cake for Jin, but we kinda got in a fight over who should carry it from the car and now the cake is on the floor and HOUSTON, WE HAVE A PROBLEM!”
Hearing no reply for a moment, Jimin asked, “Tae? You there?”
“You… dropped the cake?”
“Accidentally, yes,” the cat hybrid answered, getting nervous the longer he got no answer. He had thought Taehyung would blow a fuse, but there was no screaming… yet.
“Fix. This.”
“What?”
“Fix the mess you made. Don’t show your face unless you do.”
Jimin raised his brow at his words, “Do you want us to go get another cake? Cause this was a custom one and I don’t think it’s possible to get that so fast.”
“I don’t care, fix it or don’t show up.”
“You serious?”
Taehyung hung up without answering.
--------------
The party was coming to an end. Jimin and Jungkook had somehow managed to get another cake - albeit not the one Taehyung had wanted, but it was good enough - and he had made up with the two, apologising for his behaviour earlier.
“It’s fine, dude. I’d be worse if I was in your place,” Jungkook had said, patting him on the head while saying so.
“Exactly what Kook said, don’t worry too much, man. Enjoy the party, and do not get cold feet,” Jimin had chimed in after the maknae. Taehyung was grateful to have such amazing friends.
He had been standing at the balcony, sipping on champagne when Jin found him.
“What’s up, babe?” he asked, words laced with concern.
Taehyung sighed, looking down at the drink, “Don’t worry about it. Did you enjoy the party?”
“Don’t change the subject, Tae.”
When Jin got no reply, he sighed, grabbing Taehyung’s face and forcing him to meet his eyes, “The party was amazing. I didn’t expect you people to actually do something when I made the group as a joke. Thank you.”
Staring into Jin’s eyes, Taehyung gulped, nervousness consuming him. He had to do it now or he would cower away again, he decided.
Stepping away, he placed the glass down on the ledge, “I haven’t given you your gift yet.”
“Gift? This party was enough, honey. You didn’t need to- what are you doing?” Jin started, getting interrupted mid-way when the younger man got down on one knee in front of him.
“I don’t want to be your boyfriend anymore,” Taehyung started, pulling out a velvet box.
“Is your gift for me to break up? You didn’t have to get down on your knees for that, you know?” Jin asked, trying to act calm, but Taehyung knew him better.
Snorting at his words, Taehyung squinted his eyes at Jin in warning, “Shut up and let me finish before I back down again.”
“Sorry.”
“When I met you, I never thought we would be together, much less me wanting to spend the rest of my life with you,” Taehyung began his speech, smiling when he saw Jin playfully glare at him, “but you came into my life and made it so much better. I would be a mess without you. I’ve had this ring for months now, never finding the right moment to do it, but now feels as good as any. You always told me to not wait for the right moment and make the moment right, so here I am. Kim Seokjin, will you make me the happiest man alive and-” He was about to finally ask when a clearly drunk Namjoon stumbled onto the balcony.
“There you guys are! Everyone is looking for you two!” he exclaimed, grinning happily at finding his friends, the two barely able to understand what he said.
The smile slipped off of his face when he got no reply, and scanning the scene in front of him, he quickly connected the dots before he was back to smiling happily, his tail wagging furiously and exclaimed, “Oooh Taehyung-ah! Did you propose yet?”
Taehyung stared at him, lips parted in shock, not knowing how to react. His heart sank as the drunk man blubbered on about god knows what. What did he do to deserve this? He wasn’t sure whether he was angry or disappointed at the situation, but what he did know without a doubt, was that he'd teach Namjoon a lesson after this.
Seeing Taehyung deflating each second, Jin pushed Namjoon out of the balcony with a ‘Fuck off, you dumb dog’ - to which he got a very drunk reply of ‘I’m a wolf!’ - before returning to him. Crouching down to be face-to-face with him, Jin smiled reassuringly, taking Taehyung’s hands in his, “Ignore him, baby. Finish what you were saying.”
“The moment’s ruined.”
“I will smack you if you say that again. The moment is not ruined and if you don’t finish what you were saying right now, I will hunt Namjoon down and push you both off of this balcony.”
“Will you say yes if I do?” Taehyung asked, looking like a kicked puppy as he did so.
“You’re gonna have to say it to find out, won’t you?”
Taking a deep breath, he resumed, “Kim Seokjin, will you marry me?”
“No.”
“W-what?” Taehyung sputtered, looking at Jin with wide eyes, heart shattering the longer he got no reply.
Jin laughed, “I’m kidding. Of course I’ll marry you.”
“Yah! You’re so mean, why would you ever do that?!” Taehyung whined, “You can’t just joke around li-”
Jin grabbed Taehyung’s face, cutting him off by pulling him into a sweet kiss. He smiled when he felt the other one kiss back instantly, one hand sliding down to intertwine it with the others’.
Pulling away from the kiss, the two smiled at each other, Taehyung slipping the ring on Jin’s finger.
“Best. Birthday. Ever.”

Woodrow Whyte — May 19, 2021
"I don’t know if I want a lot of musicians I love to know I exist because then the possibility of them thinking I suck comes into play"
To quote a famous drag queen, the cheek, the nerve, the gall, the audacity and the gumption of Waterparks to name their fourth album Greatest Hits. It's a bold statement but if anyone can pull it off, it's the Houston trio and their charismatic frontman Awsten Knight.
Like many releases this year, most of the record was written, recorded and produced during the pandemic, and the enforced downtime leant itself to introspective songwriting sessions.
"When you’re alone for so long, it takes a toll on you and forces you to examine yourself more", Awsten said in promotional materials for the album, before adding “When you hear this album, I hope you walk away feeling like there’s no other band doing anything like it. In my opinion, these are our Greatest Hits. As long as you go into it without expectations of prior things, I think it’s going to be your favourite fucking Waterparks album.”
Fans won't have long to find out if the Greatest Hits lives up to its name, as it drops this Friday. To tide you over until then, we asked Awsten to take a trip down memory lane with our My Life In 20 questions.
20) What did you learn about yourself in 2020?
I learned that I can stop using social media if I want to. I knew we weren’t gonna be doing anything so I took a good 6 months off and when it was time to come back in September, I really didn’t want to. I broke that addiction to checking Twitter all the time. It was cool though because we also grew a lot in that period, so I didn’t have to feel guilty for taking that time.
19) What was your favourite album from 2019?
FANDOM. I make all the songs I wish someone else would because they’d be my favourite band if they did. I’ll also say Igor, Amo, Weezer (Black Album), When We All Fall Asleep..., Anonymous, 7, prob some others but the wiki list is very long and I still have 18 questions to go.
18) What was the most important thing to happen in your life when you were 18?
Graduating high school, I guess? Getting a car was good too! I got my permit late because I was scared to drive and didn’t really care about going places, what a dope guy!
17) Who was your crush at 17?
I’m kinda blanking. Maybe Miley Cyrus?? Do people normally remember this stuff?
16) What can you remember about your 16th birthday?
I truly don’t remember it. I was probably wearing a studded belt if that helps though.
15) What did you hate at 15 which you love now?
I hated the straight edge youth crew dudes that would hang out at local venues and crowd kill when there were only like 40 people, like bitch you’re 28 and I’m 15, stop punching kids you my children my bride looking bitch good lordddd corniest dudes ever, looking like Christian Joe Dirt punching kids for scene clout.
14) What TV show were you obsessed with at 14?
I think 14 I was into Dexter. Amazing show but oh my god that ending. I didn’t have opinions back then about quality, but even at that time I was like
13) 13 is unlucky for some. Do you have anything that you’re superstitious about?
I’m very superstitious. Before shows I need everyone to stay away from me and let me play solitaire. I don’t walk under ladders, you can’t split the pole when you’re walking with people, I sage myself when I come home from anywhere, whole lotta stuff, baby.
12) If you could live the life of any other person for 12 hours, who would you be and why?
Honestly I’m fine being me, but if it was just for like 12 hours uhhhhh Charlie Day so I can do that thing with my voice when he says “OOAH HELLLLAOOOH”
11) Who was your best friend when you were 11?
Everyone I was friends with before music was just a friend via proximity, like we were on the same sports teams or had the same classes. That’s how it is when you’re younger. You don’t choose that shit when you’re younger, you’re just like, 'You’re near me, what’s up do u like Captain Underpants?' That’s kinda the deal until you’re old enough to be picky. I remember being friends with these twin dudes on swim team Benito and Ernesto, shout out those dudes wherever they are!!!
10) Where do you hope you'll be in ten years time?
Somewhere the internet can’t find me. I hope I’m into some stupid shit like boats, no wifi on the water.
9) What was your biggest fear when you were 9?
Ghosts, I think. And yeah, I used to hear voices! Not dope!
8) When you were 8, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I used to want to be an author/illustrator for kids books and an archaeologist! I’ll still do the kids books but, man, archaeologists have to be in the sun so much and I need to keep my skin cute so people buy my album. Greatest Hits May 21.
7) Which of the seven deadly sins are you most guilty of?
I just googled them for a refresher and it’s all anime. I’d either say envy or anger. By the way, who made this? It’s stupid as fuck that “anger” is a sin, like huh??????? Bitch I’ll kill you.
6) You can invite six people to your dream dinner party (dead or alive), who would you invite?
No dead people at my dinner party, gross smell. Here’s the thing, I don’t know if I want a lot of musicians I love to know I exist because then the possibility of them thinking I suck comes into play, and if someone like Donald Glover actively had the thought “god, Awsten sucks”, I’d be devastated. So I don't know if I want anyone in that realm to know who I am, I’m cool with loving them from afar.
I’m gonna say a group of people who have nothing to do with me. Like, 6 people who are working on the next Conjuring movie and I just wanna listen in on them and be like, “holy shit??????” I love y’all so much. Quick shout out Lin Shaye.
5) Name five things you can't live without.
Besides the obvious ones: dogs, personal space, sunglasses that cover most of my head, coffee, and tennis/biking. I need to tire myself out as much as possible or I get moody.
4) Describe yourself in four words.
Capricorn. Flexible. Weirdly tall.
3) Your top three songs of all time.
The Beach Boys - 'Wouldn’t It Be Nice', Rihanna - 'Bitch Better Have My Money', and Macklemore - 'Thrift Shop'.
2) Name two things on your bucket list.
A platinum Waterparks album, get a horror music video produced by Blum House.
1) What or who is your one true love?
Having one true love would be scary! Too much emphasis on one thing, too much to lose; can’t put that much on one person either! That’s a crazy level of pressure and expectation! Also Gwen Stefani.

INTERVIEW: NYC EVENTS PLANNERS KIM CHANEL x JUNAE BROWN
Hey ladies! Thank you for taking the time out your hectic schedules to talk to me!
First of all tell me what made you get into throwing events and what were you doing before you got into events?
Kim: For me, one thing that solidified it was my visit to South By Southwest in 2015, it was a fascinating experience to me. Just to see his curators or brands were able to produce interactive events and bring their ideas to life was something I just simply found interesting. After coming back from that trip at that time I was so ready to have an event to showcase artists in some way or even just come up with a theme that everyone could enjoy!
Junae: I've technically been throwing events dating back to backyard pool parties with my cousins as a kid lol I've always sort of been the "plan the fun" person amongst my friends, so I guess that's where it began. Fast forward to college I started hosting events, and threw this huge BBQ on campus sometime during my Junior year. That led to me being elevated President of student government and activities where we produced about 66 events per semester (sounds crazy I know lol). After college I put together and promoted some events in the city, and while working at Sony put together both staff and artist events. They seem to follow me.
You have become known for throwing fire events together collectively, when did you first start working together and how did your first event come about?
K: We were working in the same building (Sony Music) together and a mutual friend asked me if I knew Junae and at that time I never met her, after that we followed each other. So from that I saw that she threw events before so I asked her questions, tips etc. She gave me much useful information. Then we finally met at this party. We were like "yo let's just throw an event together!" So we started planning for it like two months prior and called it "Trappin' N Dabbin" we had it at a very intimate venue and it was packed. It was an amazing feeling.
Junae agreed: Kim and I started working together in Fall 2015. It's crazy because I was at Columbia records and she was at Epic at the time, and a few mutual friends kept trying to link us. Eventually we started following each other on Twitter and one day she mentioned she wanted to throw an event but wasn't sure how to go about it. I told her if she needed help to just let me know, when she did we met up and Trappin' N Dabbin was born! We mesh really well both creatively and as people, so it's been nothing but litness ever since!
With NYC being jam packed with so many amazing music events how hard is it to create something that stands out from the rest and what would you say makes your events unique?
K: One thing Junae and I try to do is make the event more interactive more than anything and come up with something creative to draw people in. For instance we may try to have free food, we love taking care of people and making sure they're getting more than just an average party.
J: I wouldn't say it's difficult to create something unique per say but that you just need to make a conscious effort to bring something different to the table. There's rarely ever anything completely new under the sun, just new ways to execute the same ideas. I think what makes our events unique is the atmosphere we create. Our main purpose with creating events in the first place was to take everything we don't really like about events and produce the opposite vibe. I think we create a space where regardless of who you are you can come have a good time and be yourself. Everyone's "elite" and the gaol stays simple... have fun! We're probably a little crazy for it but we try to give people more than their money's worth and add things to make it different each time. I doubt we've had the same party twice. We also take different approaches with our marketing, graphics and promotion but we'd need a 2nd interview to cover that lol
What is your favourite thing about the NYC music scene and what would you change about it?
K: I've always been an admirer of the New York City music scene. One thing I admire about it is the fact that there is always access to discovering a new artist and a widespread of opportunity to just simply network at events. I love to see the genuine support. Although I'm not from there I would love to see the native artist be given the opportunity to have a louder voice and eventually rise up in the music business but I see artists are in fact throwing their own showcases and events which is very commendable.
J: My favourite thing about the NYC music scene is that there's so much of it, but it's still somehow very tight knit. It's definitely it's own little community regardless of if you're more gritty, trap, experimental etc. New York is still "that place" in a lot of ways, and I'll always love my city. The only thing I would change is for there to be a platform for artists to aspire to be allowed on, actually controlled by culture... no politics and no corporate influence.
Junae are you originally from New York? If so which part and how did it influence the events you throw?
Yes, I was born and raised in NY and I'm from Harlem, on the EastSide. To be honest my neighbourhood growing up was a party nearly 24/7, whether it was just people outside, actual parties, or cars blasting music. The stage to the Puerto Rican Day festival every year was literally outside my living room window. I think it taught me what all different kinds of people coming together to have a good time looks like, and more than anything how to make a little into a whole lot.
Kim you are originally from Philadelphia, what was it like growing up there? Did you start off throwing events there first and if so how does the scene differ to NYC?
We don't have a huge music scene there but at the same time some of the most talented artists in the music scene are from Philly. Growing up while artists like State Property, Eve, Jill Scott, Musiq Soulchild were around definitely have Philly this amazing feeling back then. Now everyone is starting to make a name for themselves and it's something I love seeing. Back in the early / mid 2000's there was a huge wave of Philly creatives throwing their own events, coming up with their own clothing brands and they were as young as 17/18 years old. Now that I'm older I realise how cool that was. However, now that side of Philly is coming back. I didn't start throwing events in Philly but recently I just realised back in high school I remember high school friends and I were in the works of throwing our own events as young as 16 years old. I wish I could find the flyer. I just realised it was an interest of mine even as a teenager.
Where besides New York have you thrown events and if you could throw a music event in any country where would it be?
K: Besides New York, we've thrown events in Atlanta, our birthdays happen to be back to back, mine is February 4th and Junae's the 5th so we thought we could partner up with our friends in Atlanta who go by the name of Money Makin Bro's and have a party of which the outcome was amazing! We've had one in Philly last year in July and we have another one coming up July 7th of this year. We get a lot of people from other cities like Houston, Boston, L.A etc
J: We'll be back again soon to Philly and Atlanta and the plan is to hit a few more that been requesting for a little minute now before the year is out... hey west coast... hey CT! If I could throw a music event in any country it would have to be Japan. There is SO much urban and Hip Hop culture there, and from what I've heard they know how to party!
What has been your event highlight so far?
J: Probably the time we promoted a party in 9 days for January 2nd... it was only our 2nd event and people were lined up the block unable to get in. It was definitely no higher than 10 degrees outside (sorry again guys!). We were over capacity at like 10.30... the venue felt like a 4 train at rush hour but we partied all night anyway lol. There was a moment Kim and I looked at each other like "is this really happening?"... and it really, really was.
K: I think bringing Ye Ali and Lil Uzi Vert's produced Maaly Raw was a highlight for me since I am a fan of both so it was really cool to have them in the same building. My event highlight has been just the people who continue to come and support no matter what, that's a highlight every time.
What has been the craziest thing that has happened at one of your events?
K: Well our hosts (Mouse Jones and Funny Julius) are always doing something crazy at our events so totally lost count. It's always a good time with them!
J: I honestly can't pick a craziest thing, but as Kim said just know that each crazy thing involves our hosts who do the most! They're such an important piece to our puzzle lol if you know you know.
Who would be your dream event host?
J: Call me sentimental, but I really love our current hosts, it's hard to imagine the event without them. But I mean if Drake or somebody wants to grab a third mic I'm here for it haha!
K: I don't think I have a dream event host but I have a few dream DJ's, Swizz Beatz, Just Blaze, DJ Drama, Mister Cee, TM88 and Sonny Digital.

Can we expect you ladies to take a visit to London any time soon to bless us with a fire event?
K: Of course we would love to! I think our 90's / 2000's party would be a hit over in London!
J: Speaking it into existence for this Fall or 2018!
Finally what advice would you give to anyone reading this that may want to follow in your footsteps and launch their own event?
K: My advice would be to start small and work your way up, implement a lot of your own taste / perspective in your event. Always try to think out of the box when it comes to flyers and the actual event. With flyers at most times it's their first impression of the event your having and you want to make it look attractive as possible. Ideally you want to give yourself a 4-3 week window to promote. Don't announce anything until you are completely ready and make it interactive / gauge what would interest the audience you're trying to target.
J: The first thing I would say is go for it. Don't wait, don't waste time watching other people do what you want to do either. Imagine how you want the event to be, it's purpose, find a small team that add just as passionate as you... keep integrity at the forefront and execute. Also invite me I'd love to attend lol!
