GOLDEN BEARS ROUT TAR HEELS, 92-72
Cal Wins First Round, Moves On to Battle #1 Baylor
WACO, Texas – There have been plenty of games this season in which Kristine Anigwe has shouldered most of the load for the Cal women's basketball team. Saturday afternoon in the biggest game of the season, Anigwe and the Bears reaped the reverse benefits. Anigwe had a sometimes uneven performance, but a handful of her teammates turned in some of their best efforts of the season and the Golden Bears overcame a sloppy start to rout North Carolina 92-72 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Cal, the No. 8 seed in the Greensboro Region, advances to Monday's second round against top-seeded and host Baylor. Tipoff is at 6 p.m. PT on ESPN2. Anigwe ultimately was productive with 18 points and 22 rebounds – her 33rd consecutive double-double. She also became the Pac-12's all-time single-season rebounding leader with 528. But she had only two points at halftime when the Bears (20-12) fought back from a 12-point second-quarter deficit to trail just 40-37 at the intermission. Anigwe's 22 rebounds are the most ever by a Pac-12 player in an NCAA Tournament game and the sixth-highest single-game total in women's NCAA Tournament history. Senior guard Asha Thomas led Cal with 19 points while junior Jaelyn Brown added 16 points on 6-for-7 floor shooting, including 4-for-5 from 3-point range. Junior CJ West had a season-high 13 points to go along with eight rebounds. Graduate transfer Recee Caldwell matched her career-high with 12 assists. "I was really grateful that my teammates had my back," Anigwe said. "It's not a one-player team. I felt like I wasn't doing enough in the first half and I just had to change my mindset and just focus on defense. I have to trust that my teammates are going to have my back. I don't know if I could have performed in the second half like I did without them." In a game that was full of individual and team superlatives for the Bears, it's hard to believe they were down 22-11 at the end of the first quarter after shooting just 31 percent from the field and allowing the Tar Heels to convert 53 percent of their shots. But Cal shot 60 percent during the final three quarters while holding North Carolina to a 40 percent clip after the first. The Bears ended up with a season-high in points (92) and assists with 23. "I'm proud of this group because they figuratively punched first and we had to find a way," Cal head coach Lindsay Gottlieb said. "We needed everyone to step in and that's what happened. I thought we really locked in after the first quarter and I'm really proud of our entire team and various people stepping up individually and as a group." Brown tied a season-high in 3-pointers made and had her second-highest scoring output of the season. West finished in double-digits for just the fourth time this year. "CJ and Jaelyn have been great for us all year," Cal guard Kianna Smith said. "I think people pay attention to Kristine, (Thomas) and (Caldwell) because they've been scoring for us all year, but CJ and Jaeyln are great offensive weapons for us, and they showed up big-time today." Anigwe didn't score her first points until three minutes had elapsed in the second quarter. Moments earlier, the Tar Heels had built a 25-13 lead with 8:48 remaining in the first half. But Cal whittled the deficit away and took its first lead on a steal and layup by Thomas to make it 41-40 just 51 seconds into the third quarter. The Bears wore down UNC's morale as well after going nearly the length of the court in 3.1 seconds on a beautifully designed play that culminated with a 3-pointer that was banked home by Brown as the third quarter clock expired. That extended Cal's lead to 63-56, and the Bears began the fourth quarter with a 14-2 run to put the game away. "Things like that are huge momentum shifts," Gottlieb said. "The three points on the board is really important. Four to seven (point lead) is a big difference, but it also gave us a fun, emotional lift that felt like the magic of March." The Bears are hoping for more magic Monday night.

not sure if you’re the highest on the sparks, who do you think makes the final roster?
I don't know all the Sparks details. But I can give you my impression of them.
They did really well in free agency. I'm not sure if they entered free agency with a team plan. But they ended up with pieces that could make a cohesive team. Does Fisher know how to fit those pieces together and build around them? I guess we'll see. Training camp seems a little crowded and directionless.
1- Toliver/Canada. 2- Carter/Cooper. If you've got Chennedy, you have to start her. Tea won't like that. But I'd rather piss off Tea than Chennedy. 3- Sykes/Samuelson. They'll probably switch around depending on the matchup. 4- Nneka/Chiney. I guess. If they're healthy. And if they're not healthy, that's what Lauren Cox is for. 5- Cambage/AZB.
They picked Rae Burrell instead of Naz Hillmon, Elissa Cunane, or Queen Egbo. They must be very confident in Chiney, Lauren Cox, and AZB. Rae Burrell will be playing behind Carter/Cooper and Sykes/Samuelson. So she'll barely play this year.
Kianna Smith. I have literally no idea why they drafted her. Maybe the Sparks are betting on a mid-season Toliver injury. But why Kianna Smith and Lexie Brown? You only need one back-up back-up point guard.
Ododa... They didn't draft a center with their earlier picks. So I don't think they're actually planning on a third center. Maybe they can use Ododa as a Cambage insurance policy. If there's a Liz incident, AZB and Ododa can fill in.
I have literally no idea how Arella Guirantes and Jasmine Walker fit in. I guess they don't.
So it's those 10, Lauren Cox, and Rae Burrell.

Missing Black Lives Matter
There has been an ongoing discussion on this blog about how cases of missing black men, woman and children do not receive equal attention from both detectives and the media. Studies have shown that recovery efforts for missing people increases if there is a larger amount of media coverage on the missing person. However, studies also show that there is a clear racial bias in the media when it comes to covering cases of missing persons--and numerous findings have confirmed that cases of missing white people receive more media coverage than cases of missing people of color. (source)
In an effort to spread awareness about missing black women, men, and children, I have compiled a (growing) list of unsolved cases in the US involving missing black people that have been covered on this blog. Links to full write-ups and active GoFundMe pages, petitions, Facebook pages and/or flyers connected to the cases are provided as well. Please share, sign the petitions, and/or donate to the GoFundMe pages if you can. The lives of these missing black individuals and their families MATTER! They deserve justice and answers. Feel free to send me other cases that you would like to have added to the list.

South Carolina women top Louisville, advance to title game
Brea Beal matched her season high with 12 points and helped hold Cardinals star Hailey Van Lith to nine points on 4-for-11 shooting as the Gamecocks (34-2) delivered another stifling defensive performance.
The Dawn Staley-led Gamecocks will face the Connecticut-Stanford winner on Sunday night at Target Center. Staley will try to win her second national championship, eight months after the Hall of Famer led the U.S. Olympic team to a gold medal in the Tokyo Games.
“You see happy tears, happy tears, right now,” Boston said in her post game TV interview. “I’m just thanking God we have one more game.”
Destanni Henderson scored 11 points with 3-for-6 shooting from 3-point range and had four assists for South Carolina, which improved to 13-0 this season against AP-ranked opponents.
“Just going to live in the moment for right now,” Henderson said.
Emily Engstler led Louisville with 18 points and nine rebounds as the Cardinals went 1 for 8 from 3-point range and could never find a rhythm in the half court against the No. 1 overall seed in this tournament.
Kianna Smith and Olivia Cochran each scored 14 points for the Cardinals (29-5), who were the only team in this Final Four without a title. This was their fourth trip to the national semifinals in coach Jeff Walz's 15 seasons.
“I've never been prouder of a group,” Walz said. “They've absolutely been a joy to coach.”
The Cardinals, one of the three No. 1 seeds in this Final Four, made it out of the Wichita Region with no trouble. Van Lith, the relentless sophomore guard with the perpetually flopping blond pigtails, hit the 20-point mark in each of their first four tournament games.
Van Lith met her match with Beal, who had a four-inch height advantage and shadowed her all over the court as she often does to the opponent’s most dangerous player. Van Lith, whose first basket came on a knifing drive for a layup with 1:43 left in the second quarter, had two jumpers blocked by Beal and three turnovers in the first half.
The Gamecocks, who were the wire-to-wire No. 1 team in the AP poll this season, squeezed their first four tournament opponents in the Greensboro Region to a bleak average of 41.2 points on their way to a fourth Final Four in the last seven years.
Engstler, the tough-as-nails transfer from Syracuse, helped Louisville keep Boston from getting too comfortable in the paint while Olivia Cochran helped with the muscle. Physical play can come with a price, though, and with 4.2 seconds left in the third quarter Boston drew Engstler’s fourth foul on a put back layup and stretched the lead to 57-48 with the and-one free throw.
Engstler fouled out with 4:56 to go and had her head buried in her clenched hands on the bench as her teammates tried to console her.
After putting up 28 points and 22 rebounds in the Sweet 16 against North Carolina, Boston proved she had plenty left for the Final Four.
One point painfully ousted South Carolina, which won the title in 2017, in the semifinals last season to eventual champion Stanford when Boston’s put back attempt bounced off the rim at the buzzer. The 6-foot-5 junior from the U.S. Virgin Islands has bounced right back a year later.
“We just knew that we fell short, but it’s not something that we continued to think about,” Boston said. “This is a new team. We have a lot more depth.”
Said Staley: “You’re going to pass the test or you’re going to have to retake it.”
Wearing her familiar vibrant braids in a bright-pink-and-purple combination, Boston helped the Gamecocks set a commanding tone early with an 11-2 lead. The Cardinals missed seven of their first eight shots from the floor.
Louisville enjoyed a 12-0 run early in the second quarter to take a short-lived three-point edge, but South Carolina simply had so much more to offer after that. Henderson's 3-pointer gave the Gamecocks their largest lead at 51-36 midway through the third quarter, and the Cardinals were only within less than eight points for 42 seconds after that.
The entire South Carolina team stayed off the court during the national anthem, keeping with the Gamecocks’ practice all season. Last season, several players took a knee during the singing of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

Thomas' Buzzer-Beater Lifts Bears Over No. 8 Stanford
Senior's Driving Layup As Time Expires Leads Cal To 81-80 Victory
BERKELEY – It took senior Asha Thomas 40 minutes to make a field goal against the Cardinal.
It was well worth the wait.
Thomas' driving layup as time expired lifted the Cal women's basketball team to an 81-80 victory over No. 8 Stanford at Haas Pavilion.
Thomas, who entered the night averaging 10.9 points per game, didn't get on the scoreboard until her two free throws put the Bears (14-6, 5-4 Pac-12) in front 79-78 with 9.5 seconds to play. The Cardinal went ahead on a pair of free throws with 7.2 seconds left that were a result of star Kristine Anigwe's fifth foul.
Without Anigwe, who dominated with 25 points and 24 rebounds, Thomas made the game-winning play. She found an opening in the lane and laid the ball of the glass with her left hand. After caroming off the rim three times, the ball fell through the basket as the horn sounded. "We put the ball in (Thomas') hands and she made an unreal, incredible play," said Anigwe, who registered her third 20-20 game of the season. "That's something we expect from her. She inspires me. She deserves it." It marked Cal's second straight victory over its rival, following up its 78-66 win over Stanford ast February. The win was also the Bears' first over a Top Ten opponent this season. "You come to the office every day for many reasons, but days like today are ones you never forget," Cal head coach Lindsay Gottlieb said. "It goes without saying that any win over Stanford feels extra special just because of how darn good they are and how well-prepared they are. It makes everything more meaningful."
Not only did the Bears have to play the final possession without Anigwe, but starting guard Kianna Smith had also fouled out a minute earlier. But there were still other threats on the floor that Stanford had to defend – forward Jaelyn Brown and guard Recee Caldwell combined for 29 points. "You like that as a player, to have your coach trust you," Thomas said. "I like big moments. I like having the ball in my hands with a chance to make a play for myself or others." For the second straight game, the Bears made a season-high in 3-pointers. They went 12-for-30 from beyond the arc, with Brown converting on 4-of-6 and finishing with 18 points. Smith was also 4-of-6 from long distance and had 16 points while Caldwell was 3-of-7 and finished with 11. "This is who we are and who we can be," Gottlieb said. "We can't be an elite team or beat an elite team if only one or two are clicking. We feel we have the most efficient and powerful post player in the country, but we're not going to go where we want to go with only Kristine being exceptional. We need everyone else as well."

Kristine Anigwe, the best rebounder in the draft, is headed to the Connecticut Sun
The Cal center put up a 30-30 game in her senior season.
Kristine Anigwe is the WNBA Draft’s most dominant rebounder and now is headed to the Connecticut Sun as the No. 9 overall pick. The Cal senior has nearly every school record imaginable on lock — scoring, rebounding, first 30-30 game — but her physical prowess under the rim is her biggest strand-out trait that should translate to the next level.
Anigwe’s name blew up two years ago when she scored 50 points in a game on 19-of-23 shooting with 14 rebounds, and she’s been producing at ridiculous levels ever since. In 33 games this season, she’s had double-doubles in 32 of them. Yep, almost every single one, including 20 rebounds or more eight times. That includes her 32-point, 30-rebound night in a road win over Washington State. Her numbers are outrageous, and it’s all the more impressive considering she didn’t start playing basketball until she was 13 years old.
15rebs is the usual NORM, but 30rebs and 32pts is just MIND BLOWING! Kristine Anigwe continues to raise the bar, much appreciated pic.twitter.com/46K8EtG86D
— PassThaBall.com (@PassThaBall) March 4, 2019
Anigwe had a bit of a late start to the game. Born in London, she only started playing basketball in seventh grade, long after she’d moved to the U.S.
“When I was younger, my mom didn’t really know about basketball,” Anigwe told SB Nation. “She had to learn a lot about sports in general, she grew up watching tennis and soccer. Being Nigerian, soccer is really popular in our culture and basketball wasn’t really a strong sport. People didn’t really know how to play or know what it was.”
That hasn’t held her back a bit, despite not taking basketball seriously until her sophomore year in high school.
Why Sun fans should be excited about Anigwe
She claims rebounding was never her specialty, but that’s hard to believe. Anigwe’s grown into the world’s best rebounder. According to Her Hoops Stats, she rebounded 26.5 percent of all possible boards during her time on the floor, the best in the nation. That included 34.4 percent of all defensive rebounds, which is 0.9 percent better than the best men’s college basketball rebounder. She owns the paint.
Anigwe’s a rebounding offensive genius, but her defense is stellar, too. She plays both ends of the court, finishing in the paint on offense and protecting it on defense. The 6’4 big blocked nearly two shots per game (1.7), which ranks 63rd in the nation. She was named the Pac-12’s Defensive Player of the Year in a year despite the conference being stacked with talent. Fellow conference standouts Sabrina Ionescu of Oregon and Alanna Smith of Stanford are expected to be first-round picks in this year’s draft.
Ivan Rabb, a former Cal men’s basketball player who’s now an NBA forward for the Memphis Grizzlies, shared a court with Anigwe for two years. He told SB Nation, “every time I was in the gym, she was there at night.” Rabb pinpointed rebounding as one of Anigwe’s biggest strengths, but also highlighted a lesser talked about part of her game: stretching the floor.
She doesn’t shoot from range often by way of a Cal system that thrives when she’s crashing the boards, but she is plenty capable. This year she’s taken a career-most 23 attempts from behind the arc and sunk seven of them.
Why Sun fans should be nervous about Anigwe
Anigwe’s the ultimate scorer and rebounder, but she might take some adjusting on a team that isn’t centered around her production scoring. At 3.3 turnovers per game and just one assist per game, she fell outside the top 3,000 in turnovers-to-assist ratio, per Her Hoops Stats. With just a 7.2 percent assist rate, she finished outside the top 2,500.
Anigwe took 17 shots per game as the featured star on her team. The next-most prolific shooter Cal has, Kianna Smith, took just nine. But Anigwe will have to readjust at the next level, where she won’t be the best scorer on her team right away. If she can figure out how to contribute to winning beyond scoring, she could be a star in the W.
Get to know Kristine Anigwe
Pregame warmup song: “I like listening to gospel music. I don’t like to get too hyped up before the game. I try to calm down.”
Most Used App: “Instagram honestly. I don’t use social media that much, but if I’m on my phone I’m on Instagram.”
Cats or Dogs? Which kind?: Dogs. I like small dogs. They’re reliable and always there for you.
Favorite meme?
If you didn’t play basketball, what would you want to make a career doing: “I would want to be a sports psychiatrist, helping people find their true self like a life coach. When I was younger I wanted to be a broadcaster because I wanted to help people see their true selves. You don’t see a lot of African-American women on TV. That motivates and inspires you to do that, so I want to do that and help people behind the scenes.”

BERKELEY – For the second consecutive season, the Cal women's basketball team opened conference play in victorious fashion, beating USC, 76-64, at Haas Pavilion. With the win, 20th-ranked Cal (10-2, 1-0 Pac-12) extends its win streak to seven in a row and has now won its last three meetings against the Trojans (10-2, 0-1 Pac-12). Junior center/forward Kristine Anigwe had 16 points and 13 rebounds for her third double-double of the season while senior Penina Davidson finished with 15 points, 11 of which came in the fourth quarter. Classmate Mikayla Cowling added 13 points and five assists for the Bears, while sophomore Jaelyn Brown had 10 points off the bench. USC forward Kristen Simon led all scorers with 20 points and added 11 rebounds while guard Minyon Moore added 14 points for the Trojans on 5-9 shooting from the floor.
With the win, Cal improves to 5-2 in Pac-12 openers under head coach Lindsay Gottlieb, including a perfect 3-0 mark when opening conference play at home.
Riding a three-game home winning streak, Cowling got the Bears going early, starting the game 4-4 from the floor and scoring nine of her 13 total points in the first quarter alone. After averaging just 6 points per game through Cal's first eight games of the year, Cowling has now scored in double-figures in four consecutive games, averaging 16 points per game over that stretch.
Cowling's energy helped the Bears pull away late in the first quarter. Cal went on an 11-2 run from late in the first quarter to early in the second, taking a lead they would never relinquish. The Bears defense locked down in the second quarter, outscoring USC, 17-10, in the period and holding the Trojans without a field goal for over four minutes.
The Bears took a 36-27 lead into the locker room as Anigwe made her presence felt all over the court. The unanimous Preseason All-Pac-12 selection grabbed eight of her game-high 13 rebounds in the first half and showcased her ability to score in a variety of ways. Anigwe, who entered the game with just one made three-pointer in her career, went 3-3 from beyond the arc while also dishing out a season-high three assists to go with two steals. After being held to just two points in Cal's road win at Kentucky, the two-time Honorable Mention All-American responded with 16 points on the night for her third double-double of the season. Anigwe now has 33 career double-doubles, tied for 13thamong all active players in Division I, and has posted a double-double in 13 of her 36 career games in Pac-12 play. Cal continued its strong play right out of the locker room, opening the third quarter on a 7-2 run. Freshman point guard Kianna Smith, who went scoreless in the first half, went 2-3 from three-point range in the third quarter as Cal led by as many as 17 points midway through the period. But as the Bears battled foul trouble and went cold from the floor, USC was able to capitalize, closing the third quarter on a 12-3 run.The Trojans were able to cut the Bears' lead to 52-56 with 7:50 left to play before Davidson took over. The senior from Auckland scored 11 of her 15 points in the fourth quarter, including nine consecutive points for the Bears to extend Cal's lead back to double-digits. Davidson has now scored in double-figures in four of her last five games and added seven rebounds for the Bears, including three offensive boards in the fourth quarter.Brown sealed the deal for the Bears down the stretch, going 4-4 from the foul line over the final 1:03 of the game. The sophomore guard had 10 points for the Bears in her fourth double-digit outing of the season, as Cal's bench outscored the Trojans, 18-0.
