Since his return to the line-up on December 23rd after missing 10 games with an upper body injury, Alex Edler seems to have found his sweet spot in terms of role and ice time. Edler had a huge night for the Canucks with three shots on eight attempts, four blocked shots and three hits including steamrolling Sharks forward Kevin Lebanc in the first period. And Edler did all of that in just 18:02 of ice time. Paired with , he has returned from injury and has played more than 22 minutes in just two of 12 games. At this stage of the veteran blueliner's career less can be more. Edler isn't playing the power play and is being used only at even-strength and as a penalty killer. And with his measured minutes, he has taken just four minor penalties over the past dozen games -- and one of them was the roughing penalty and misconduct he picked up in a late game melee on Saturday. The Canucks are not overplaying Edler and he is responding with some of his best hockey of the season. The Canucks are 9-3 since his return to the action.

Not being to maintain a lead goal is a bad habit that tends to occur in some of the Blackhawks' games and when it does happen, the outcome of their games usually doesn't end so well for them.
The Blackhawks started off ther first period fairly well and rookie Blackhawk Dominik Kubalik scored his first NHL career goal (with an assist by Brandon Saad), giving the Blackhawks a 1-0 lead.
But when Ryan Carpenter took a penalty for interference, the San Jose Sharks quickly took advantage of their power play with a goal by Kevin LeBanc, making it a 1-1 tie game.
However, Andrew Shaw broke the tie by scoring his first goal of the season and his first goal since he was traded to the Blackhawks (with assists by Olli Maatta and Dylan Strome), giving them a 2-1 lead. As the first period was winding down, the Sharks got another power play chance which they took advantage of again with a goal by Patrick Marleau (who recently joined the Sharks), making it a tie game of 2-2.
In the second period, Shaw scored his second goal of the night (with an assist by Alex DeBrincat) and gave the Blackhawks the lead goal again, but Brent Burns tied up the game again, making the score 3-3.
The Blackhawks broke the tie again as Dylan Strome scored his first goal of the season (with assists by Patrick Kane & Erik Gustafsson), but Patrick Marleau made it a tie game again as he scored his second goal of the night. After that, momentum was on the Sharks' side and Barclay Goodrow made it a 5-4 game and the Blackhawks ultimately lost their second game of the season. In my opinion, the Blackhawks not being able to maintain the lead goal once they had it was a key factor in last night’s loss. As I've mentioned many times before in my past keys to the game, when the Hawks have the lead goal, they need to TRY to maintain it because if they're not careful, it won't be long before the other team takes it away from them (which is exactly what happened). It also didn't help that the Blackhawks struggled with their power play and especially their penalty kill. I was not thrilled how they allowed a power play goal from the Sharks seconds after they got it. It's pretty clear that the Hawks still needs a lot of improvement. Despite those issues, it was good to see the Blackhawks score four goals instead of none, but when they can't hold on to a lead, it definitely affects the outcome of the game.
Andrew Shaw was definitely on his "A" game tonight as he scored two goals and he even received praise from Coach Colliton, who said, "We're a better team because we have him." Shaw definitely has an lively presence that makes him very interesting to watch and I hope that he can continue to keep up the good work.
Dominik Kubalik was very noticeable in tonight's game and I thought that he made a great impression in his first home game at the United Center as he scored his first goal of the season which resulted in him getting promoted to the top line. I hope that Kubalik gets a chance to play on the top line in the Hawks' next game and see how well he can do playing there.
Early on in the game, Alexander Nylander was on the top line, but was replaced by Kubalik and placed on the third line with Brandon Saad & David Kampf. Even though Nylander had a pretty good start to his game in the Hawks' season opener in Prague, he couldn't stay consistent enough to remain on the top line. He needs to work on playing more consistently & productively in order to remain in the line-up. The Blackhawks' next game will take place on Saturday night as they play against the Winnipeg Jets. I hope the Hawks get the message that they can't squander their lead goal once they have it and work on the issues with their special teams (especially their penalty kill). Until then, go Blackhawks!

Injured Bulls Visit Houston Tonight Limping Toward Season's End
The Bulls are coming off a pounding by the pistons with a score 117-95 this past Saturday. Tonight Chicago will visit the Rockets. Houston has a league best of sixty victories this season. The Bulls are 24-49 this season and have lost five in a row. Chicago will be without a handful of regulars tonight. Zach LaVine remains sidelined from a knee injury, Kris Dunn is out with a toe injury, and Antonio Blakeney is out with a wrist injury. Rookie Forward Lauri Markkanen has been dealing with back issues and Denzel Valentine has knee issues, both are game time decisions.
Kevin Lebanc scored the deciding goal in the fourth round of the shoot out against the Blackhawks last night beating Chicago 4-3. Rookie forward Alex Debrincat scored his twenty sixth goal of the season ad chipped in with an assist. Conor Murphy scored his second for the last place Blackhawks they’ve lost six of the last seven games.
