I know literally everyone in this fandom hates Kevin’s gills, but they have me in a chokehold. God, I need a new music album to listen to when I write I’m so tired of soviet soviet.

If you asked Kevin not even two weeks ago what he felt about Superior, the uncontrollable supe as Vought called him. He would have told you with fake bravado that he didn’t fear the guy and that he could probably take him in a fight. In reality Kevin was scared shitless at the very thought of meeting the man. Superior was the name given to him by the public, not Vought. Because Vought had no control of him, nothing to blackmail him with, no family to threaten, nothing.

Not only that but he was more powerful than the seven combined. Anything from bulletproof skin, unbreakable skin, flight, super strength, water breathing, a hyper regeneration if he finally was wounded and so many more. It was like taking all The Seven’s abilities and more and shoving them into one person. A lazy and sluggish person, who walked around in sweatpants, baggy hoodies and sneakers that had once been white but were now brown and repaired with tape.

It had all started those two weeks ago when Vought had finally gotten Superior, (Y/N) as he told everyone to call him, to agree to meet The Seven. Kevin might not have been the smartest person, not by a long shot he could admit that, but even he could see that Superior was only playing along out of boredom. Homelander looked like he was about to burst a vein with how hard he was clenching his jaw, his eyes glowing the smallest bit red like he was fighting everything inside himself not to start lasering the other man.

Every member of The Seven were tense and nervous when Ashley brought in (Y/N), the man wearing a pair of grey sweatpants and a half-unzipped sweatshirt, the white wifebeater underneath doing very little to hide the sculpted muscle of his torso.

Now, Kevin had never thought of being with a man before, especially someone who, if the rumors were correct, could defeat Homelander with one hand whilst playing candy crush on their phone with the other. But he couldn’t help but let his eyes run down the length of Superiors Adonis like body, wide shoulders, big pecs, thick muscular thighs, he couldn’t be surprised if the guy had an 8-pack under his layers. Glancing up Kevin’s eyes locked with the man he had been ogling, and when (Y/N)s lip twitched into a lazy smirk, Kevin was quick to turn away and lock his attention to the suddenly very interesting table in front of him.

The meeting went on as it always did, though this time Homelander looked closer to snap than ever before and Superior was sat back in an extra chair, feet up on the table and arms crossed behind his head. At some point (Y/N) had unzipped the rest of his sweatshirt and Kevin dared to sneak a peek. (Y/N) quirked a brow when their eyes met again, having caught the water-based hero looking, the smirk returning to his lips as The Deep was quick to look away again.

As the meeting came to an end Kevin stayed in his seat, trying his best to will away the heat that had been bubbling in his abdomen. It had especially gotten hot under his layers when (Y/N) removed his feet from the table just to push his rolling chair back and spread his legs as much as possible, as if he was inviting whoever was looking to crawl in between them and worship him.

When Kevin had left, he thought he was alone until (Y/N) had floated up beside him, as silent as the night, and started talking. The cocky grin on his lips made it obvious he knew completely the way that Kevin’s body had reacted, maybe he could even smell it with those insane senses of his. The overpowered supe had landed on his feet and started walking beside Kevin, his hand reaching up to settle on the lower part of the shorter man’s back.

The ocean hero tried his best to keep casual, though he knew he was failing with all his stuttering and how he would lose train of thought when (Y/N)s fingers brushed against the top of his ass and fingered at his belt just enough to be felt. As they reached The Deeps place, they had stopped outside the doors and Superior had leant in close, his eyes almost glowing but not with lasers but something else. His lips had just barely brushed against Kevin’s before the man pulled back, patting Kevin on the cheek, telling him he would see him soon with a wink and disappearing, likely teleportation.

Knees feeling shaky like they never had before, Kevin leant against his door and tried to comprehend what just happened. Fumbling with his hand he finally got the door open and stumbled inside, his pants feeling incredibly tight and constricting. Not even 15 minutes later found The Deep in his bed, on his knees and forehead pressed against the sheets as he fisted his cock like it was his life’s mission, mind full of images of the lazy cocky hero who had looked at Kevin like he wanted to eat him.

Kevin had come harder than he ever had before against his sheets, his hand tugging at himself until he was so sensitive, he sobbed into his sheets. Afterwards he found himself laying on his back and staring at the ceiling, chest heaving and legs feeling like jelly as he tried to understand what he had just done and what it meant.

The next two weeks passed with Superior hanging around The Seven more than he ever had before, though he mainly hung around The Deep. The stronger hero had turned down Vought’s offer to join them, laughing straight in their face when they tried to insist. Most of his time was spent following Kevin around, listening to the man talk in detail about sea life and how the mistreatment of the marine life at places like seaworld.

(Y/N) had even gone out to the ocean with Kevin and had swam with him, ducking into the waters and swimming to levels deeper than any human could ever achieve. Kevin hated to admit how his chest fluttered or how his cock perked up at the sight of the larger man coming out of the water, his wet clothes sticking impossibly close to his muscular frame.

After another swim in the ocean the two had returned to Kevin’s place, the two flying as (Y/N) carried Kevin in his arms. Entering through a window the two laughed together as water splashed all over the floors, the men still dripping oceanwater all over the place as Kevin was placed down on his feet.

“Im gonna go get cleaned up” (Y/N) said, motioning towards the bathroom to which Kevin nodded, trying his hardest not to imagine the other mans naked body. Kevin waited until he heard the water start up before he answered some of the marine life in fish tanks that had been trying to talk to him, whispering his flustered replies as one of the octopi mentioned how Kevin should just present himself to the strong man and let him take him.

“Its not like hed want to sleep with someone like me” he frustratingly whispered to the octopus, who almost rolled their eyes at him if that was possible. “He’s like a god, why would someone so hot want anything to do with someone like me?” he muttered, letting his eyes fall to the carpet as the octopus tried to point out (Y/N)s behaviors that meant the man liked him.

“What do you mean by `someone like me`?” (Y/N)s voice could be heard from the bathroom door, which Kevin now noticed was silent without the water running. Peeking over his shoulder he saw the door was wide open, the man of his desires leaning against the doorframe in nothing but a towel, hair still dripping as if he hadn’t dried it off enough. Kevin couldn’t stop but drink in all over the man’s body, gulping softly at the way his muscles pulled and stretched as he pushed off the doorframe and started making his way over.

Kevin tried to stutter an excuse or explanation, anything to get out of this conversation since he had pretty much confessed to wanting (Y/N) in a way that wasn’t acceptable, at least if you asked Vought. He soon found himself backed up against the aquarium, (Y/N)s wide frame caging him against the glass as he grabbed Kevin’s chin and forced him to look him in the eyes. Kevin wanted nothing more but to be swallowed up by the ground right then and there, or to just keel over and die on the spot.

That was when (Y/N) leant in and pressed their lips together, his eyes falling shut as Kevin’s widened, his hands dumbly flapping about before letting him come to a rest on the other man’s shoulders. Their lips gave a wet smack as (Y/N) pressed in deeper, a tiny moan leaving Kevin as the larger mans tongue brushed against his lips. Letting his lips part, Kevin shut his eyes and pushed his tongue against (Y/N)s, the grip on the other mans shoulders tightening as he let himself be devoured.

Shuddering at the wet slurp that left them as (Y/N)s tongue licked from one side of his mouth to the other, Kevin’s hips twitched forwards, already incredibly hard from just seeing the others body and kissing him. Pulling back from the kiss (Y/N) cradled the shorter mans face in his hand, looking at his face as if he was picking him apart. Before doubt and self-consciousness could start brewing though he leant in a kissed the tip of Kevin’s nose, muttering a comment about how pretty he was.

Leading them to the bed (Y/N) pushed Kevin down on his back, letting the man scoot up the bed until he was resting on his pillows. (Y/N) took a moment to look at Kevin again, tilting his head and squinting like he was taking him apart piece by piece and appreciating what he saw. “You truly are a sight” he muttered, reaching up to rub his hands up and down the other man’s trembling legs.

“Might wanna get these off” (Y/N) muttered, crawling up the bed to kiss at Kevin’s thighs, referring to the green pants of his hero suit. Kevin couldn’t muster up any words and simply nodded, reaching down to make quick work of his pants, almost ripping them off and throwing them to the side, his cock slapping against his still covered stomach and leaving a small puddle of precum.

(Y/N) quirked a brow in a teasing display of interest as he pressed in close, pressing a kiss just below the head of the length, staring up at Kevin as he threw his head back and keened. Reaching up the bigger man wrapped his hand round Kevin’s length and slowly started moving it up and down, twisting his wrist in ways that drove Kevin crazy.

Kevin almost sobbed as (Y/N) started jerking him off, his hands gripping at the sheets as he tried to thrust up into the hold as (Y/N) muttered praise and compliments the entire time. But he was quickly ripped out of his euphoria as the other man slipped his hand under Kevins shirt, the man quick to freeze up and choke out a plea to stop.

He could feel his gills quiver under his shirt, not even an inch away from (Y/N)s fingers. Kevin gulped the spit that had gathered in his mouth, trying not to cry at the thought of the other man seeing the disgusting display that was his torso. When Kevin tried to explain how gross his torso was and how (Y/N) would hate it, the other man just rolled his eyes a smidge and leant in to kiss Kevin again. “You don’t think I already knew? I have X-ray vision too you know, there’s nothing wrong with you Kevin, I think your just as beautiful as always” he commented against the other man’s lips, as if the idea of Kevin being a monster was completely out of this world.

It took a moment but Kevin finally decided to say fuck it and got the top portion of his hero outfit off, throwing the still wet fabric off to the side and turning his head away, not wanting to see (Y/N)s reaction to his biggest shame. But instead of reacting with disgust (Y/N) just leant in a kissed the middle of his stomach, working his way up to Kevins chest and slowly pushing him back onto his back again as he muttered more compliments and lustful promises.

Soon Kevin didn’t even seem to notice he was shirtless anymore as (Y/N) started moving the hand around him again and sucking hickeys all over his chest. The ocean hero gasped as he felt the other man’s fingers brush against his gills, his eyes snapping open to look down at what was happening only to meet (Y/N)s eyes. (Y/N) smirked around one of Kevins nipples and gave the bud a good suck as he twisted his hand just right, making Kevin’s eyes roll and a loud moan tumble out from between his lips.

(Y/N) didn’t do more than just teasingly brush his fingers against the edges of his gills as pulled at Kevin’s cock, moving his lips up from his chest to suck hickeys against the skin on the other man’s neck. Releasing his grip on the sheets Kevin wrapped his arms around (Y/N) and held onto him, clinging to the man as his orgasm grew nearer and nearer.

When Kevin felt (Y/N)s fingers just barely push inside his gills and twist his wrist just wrist he came, let out a loud keening sob as he came all over the other mans hand and his own torso. The larger man snickered softly as Kevin laid there panting, his body buzzing and quiet whimpers leaving his mouth. “You know your gonna have to let me go at some point, right?” he said, just barely wriggling the fingers that were still semi trapped.

Kevin knew the other man could easily rip his hand to himself, but was deciding not to. It made something in Kevin’s chest warm up at the thought that (Y/N) didn’t want to hurt him. Still buzzing from his orgasm, it took a few tries before he could move his gills, letting (Y/N) free his hands which made the ocean hero receive a sweet kiss.

Relaxing into the sheets Kevin shut his eyes and tried to catch his breath, already dozing off as (Y/N) left the bed to return with a wet cloth to clean up their mess. Kevin was almost fully asleep when he remembered that his partner had never gotten off and had only been wearing a towel the entire time, and he wondered if the man had been affected by what happened at all.

The length that pressed up against his ass as (Y/N) crawled up behind him and spooned him told him all he needed to know, but it didn’t seem like the stronger man wanted to do anything right now other than cuddle and take a nap. So Kevin got comfortable in (Y/N)s arms and let himself drift off, being lulled off to dreamland by the sound of the other mans breathing and heartbeat.

The Hours is a new opera with music by Kevin Puts and a libretto by Greg Pierce. Based on the novel of the same name by Michael Cunningham and its film adaptation, the production was chosen by star soprano Renée Fleming for her return to the Met stage. During the intermission interview, Puts and Pierce share that the piece was written almost entirely during lockdown, and shared their material and questions for each other via texts, calls, and emails. Fleming is joined onstage by mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato, and soprano Kelli O’Hara.

Act one starts strong with scenes featuring DiDonato as Virginia Woolf in 1923 working on her novel Mrs Dalloway; Fleming as Clarissa in the 1990s, preparing a dinner for her friend Richard, dying of AIDS; and the Metropolitan Opera chorus. Costumes by Tom Pye for the chorus have a startling dye job that, under the correct lighting, give the effect of the entire production being set underwater. However, the lighting changes from scene to scene, and the chorus never changes costume, leaving only a few further scenes in the remainder of the opera where the effect is again employed.

Puts’ score is most effective in its slower, lyrical sections, showcasing the Met Opera’s full orchestra. While not having heard any other work by Puts, the driving sections that propel the plot are typical of any other contemporary composer, i.e. Nico Muhly and John Adams, and not evocative of any personal style. Wind and string sections play highly rhythmic patterns that have slow harmonic changes, surely a nod to Philip Glass who scored the film version. The prelude to the first scene featuring Woolf is unfortunately scored for solo piano. It is both ineffective and jarring, barely able to accompany DiDonato’s rich voice by itself. The piano is brought back several times, and used for effect alongside the orchestra, to the detriment of the score as a whole.

It is in this scene when we are first introduced to Leonard Woolf played by the entirely miscast Sean Panikkar. Next to DiDonato, Panikkar looks like a hulking 7-foot-tall Adonis thirty years too young to play her husband. He had a pleasant tenor voice, but weak diction. Having to always share the stage with DiDonato also made it seem that his acting abilities were lacking, but I come up with a short list of other singers that could hold their own next to her.

Following this we are taken back to the 90s and treated to one of the two most striking scenes in the entire opera - the second is also in the 90s timeline, which is indicative. Clarissa is shopping for flowers and flirting with the owner, Barbara, played by Kathleen Kim. Kim has a fantastic coloratura voice and stage presence, put to great use by Puts who quotes several Mozart arias, a la Corgliano’s Ghosts of Versailles: the high Fs of the Queen of the Night enticing Clarissa to buy Ha-ha-ha-hydrangeas, and the final Pa-pa-pa-pa’s of Papagena for peonies. The entire chorus encircles them, bunches of flowers in both hands, the tableau bursting with colour and texture, reminding me of the framing of Mother Mary in the The Cell (2000) as well as the final shots of Midsommar (2019). My only complaint is that the bouquets could have been bigger and even more vibrant.

We are finally introduced to Kelli O’Hara’s Laura Brown in the 1950s, reading Mrs Dalloway in her bed, dreading to get up and greet her family on her husband’s birthday. This section came across as the weak link as the character had nonexistent motivations for her actions and a clichéd plot. How many stories in film and television have we already seen about a repressed housewife in the 1950s ready to buckle under the pressure of keeping the surface of her life glossy and clean? Brown feels no connection to her child and leaves him with a neighbour - also played by Kim - as she runs to a motel to kill herself with a bottle of pills. Her husband has done the irredeemable deed of buying her flowers and letting her sleep in on his birthday, and constantly showering their son with affection.

Kelly O’Hara’s acting was always visible, in the sense that it was constantly distracting to watch her and see her, for lack of a better term, go through the motions. Fleming and DiDonato in comparison seemed completely authentic. They were characters plucked from their lives and put on the stage, reacting to everything around them, and making choices and decisions moment to moment. There is something inexplicably off-putting about O’Hara’s performance, not even getting into the fact that the part is out of her grasp. The notes were there, of course, but the timbre of her voice was frequently strained, and not pleasant to listen to. Beside her co-stars there is a clearly audible gulf of technical proficiency between her and them.

Supporting the three leads is an ensemble of singers of mixed quality. Clarissa’s dying friend Richard is sung to perfection by bass-baritone Kyle Ketelsen. His rich voice could project at every dynamic, convey every emotion, and delivered every word with clear diction. His acting was also far better than most opera singers and met Fleming beat for beat, especially in the best scene of the entire opera where Clarissa visits Richard for one last time in his New York apartment. Clarissa’s partner Sally was played by Denyce Graves, whom I loved in Marnie, but sounded less than stellar in this live broadcast, every note uttered with a grating squawk.

In the 1950s Laura Brown’s husband delivered his lines serviceably, but not memorably. Her son was a a scene-stealer, and had a voice that projected loudly and clearly over the entire orchestra and chorus in the finale of Act 1. Back in the 20s, DiDonato is joined by another mezzo-soprano, Eve Gigliotti, playing the maid Nelly. From register to register Gigliotti’s voice was resonant and clear and I could only think of other parts I would love to hear her perform.

Finally, in another double-role, Sylvia D’Eramo plays Kitty in the 50s, and Woolf’s sister Vanessa in 1923. D’Eramo's voice seemed to belong to another singer, sounding more mature and full than her youthful looks would have you expect. She never took the focus away from O’Hara or DiDonato, but maybe should have been given the role of Brown instead. Next to O’Hara, D’Eramo was much more interesting to listen to and watch, and was able to play the young woman sharing a fleeting kiss with Brown, and mother to three as Vanessa.

There are two choices in this production that served no readily apparent purpose, and therefore failed in execution. First, a lone countertenor from the chorus singing wordlessly at the three leads throughout, the symbolism unclear if it had intention in the first place. Additionally, there is a dance cohort onstage for nearly the entirety of the production that serves no purpose other than to fill space, clutter the scenes with extra bodies, and brandish empty symbols of books, flowers, and kitchen appliances in the corresponding time periods. The oddest choice of all, to have one male dancer among the dozen or so women.

The set was disappointing and did not make use at all of the space and funds that the Met surely has at its disposal. Yet, in the second act there is one wow-element where a large silk screen comes billowing down from the ceiling and stretches right to the bottom of the stage to catch a set of black-and-white projections, a flashback with Clarissa and a young Richard on the beach, after which it is released and cascades to pool on the floor behind the singers. Again, it seems as the most care and attention is made for Fleming’s 1990s scenes.

Throughout the opera there is a reference to Richard’s book being great, but suffering from a ‘tacked-on’ ending. Ironically, this opera also suffers from the same fate. The finale is a chance for the leading women to shed their characters - none does so faster than O’Hara - adjusting their body language, and gazing directly into the audience, to address us in a trio containing only a handful of sentences, repeated ad nauseum with nearly no melodic variation, ‘Here is the world and you live in it. All alone. You try.’ I couldn’t tell if it was supposed to be sentimental, uplifting, melancholy, or what, but ultimately it comes across as smarmy. Richard Strauss this is not, despite Fleming and co. giving it their all.

Episode Extra: The Afterlife of Mary Magdalene

There is another woman, closer to home for Christianity, who has been known for the love she had for a dead man. Though the number of women at the empty tomb varies depending on the gospel being read, the Christian Church has traditionally recognized the round number of the Three Marys: Mary the mother of Jesus, Mary Salome, and Mary Magdalene, also known as the Myrrh Bearers since they brought precious ointments with them to embalm Jesus’ body. Mary was a popular name at the time — in Hebrew, it’s Miriam, the name of the prophetess who helped Moses lead the Israelites out of Egypt during the Exodus. In a time of political dissatisfaction and nostalgia for an imagined past of religious and national freedom, many Jewish parents of the first century named their children with the expectation of an imminent reversal of fortunes.

Mary Magdalene is an enigmatic figure from her very first appearance in text: her title “Magdalene” doesn’t translate very well into anything. The most common scholarly reconstruction is that it means she was from Magdala, a large fishing village in the Galilee, but even that isn’t very certain. Mark and Matthew only refer to her by name, without any other description beyond her attachment to Jesus’ following. Luke informs us that she had been rid of seven demons by Jesus, but also that (somewhat more importantly) she and a couple other women were his patrons — they funded his work. In spite of her mysterious past as a demoniac, then, her role in Jesus’ ministry reflected not simply womanly servitude but the power and prestige of a typical rich Roman woman helping pay a client’s bills — a position common enough in early Christianity to afford women quite a lot of say in the Church in the first few centuries CE.

Naturally, there was some tension about these powerful roles, and the second and third centuries saw increased squeamishness from Christian men about women’s outspokenness, and for one reason or another Mary Magdalene became, for both misogynist and proto-feminist sides of the debate, the prototypical woman disciple. The second century Gospel of Thomas ends with a scene in which Peter, prototypical of male discipleship, asks Jesus to tell Mary Magdalene to go away since “women don’t deserve to live”, but Jesus reassures him that she can stay because his guidance will make her (at least spiritually) male — a pro-Mary Magdalene take in which women are allowed to be prominent in the Church but must act like men to do so. Another somewhat-easier-to-digest text, named the Gospel of Mary by scholars, describes a discussion between the disciples after Jesus has gone back to heaven — Mary Magdalene tries you reassure the male disciples that Jesus promised her he’d be with them forever, and Peter responds that Jesus would never have spoken alone to a woman, inciting a furious argument between all the disciples about Mary’s place. Later legends told how Mary Magdalene sailed to Rome after Jesus’ resurrection and tried to convert Emperor Tiberius, bringing a white chicken egg as a humble gift; when Tiberius claimed a man could no more rise from the dead that her egg could change color, the egg in her hand turned blood red — a potential source for the modern Easter egg tradition.

Misogynistic arguments found support in Mary’s sordid demonic past and her subservience to Jesus and relative silence in the New Testament gospels themselves. The medieval pope Gregory XIV did the Magdalene a further disservice by proclaiming (with no evidence) that she was the same woman as the “woman of ill repute” in Luke 9 who cried on Jesus’ feet, instigating a number of inventive portrayals of Mary Magdalene as the terrible scandalous harlot whom Jesus converted into a repentant, quiet saint. A sorry, penitent Mary Magdalene, usually tantalizingly undressed but still covered by her long hair, sometimes contemplating her own mortality via a skull in one hand, became a favorite subject of Christian artists, giving the Church a whore to complement Mother Mary.

The past century has seen attempts to revitalize and reclaim the image of the Magdalene. Some attempts have been less progressive than others — such as the rumor that, rather than a sex worker (gross), Mary Magdalene was Jesus’ wife (good), an allegation that inspired The Last Temptation of Christ and Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code. More recently, Pope Francis in 2012 declared Mary Magdalene “apostle to the apostles”, based on the fact that in the Gospel of John she is not only the only woman at the empty tomb, but also the first person to see Jesus alive again, and the one whom he himself entrusts with the news of his resurrection, essentially making her not only the very first apostle, but also the very first Christian. In her book The Resurrection of Mary Magdalene, feminist theologian Jane Schaberg notes, “Mary Magdalene is the madwoman in Christianity’s attic... hidden there because of an open and not fully appreciated secret, and its implications, at Christianity’s core: that the male disciples fled and the women did not.”

I find this quote very striking, and because of it I went through the link and read the article itself, and it contains discussion of a lot of historical authors who were (what we today consider) queer and who's works had queer themes, as well as modern scholars bringing their works into a modern light! I've actually collected a list of most/all of the writers and works in case anybody (besides myself) is interested! it's a bit long haha

Once you start looking, you see queer presentism everywhere. It pops up when politicians espouse our “unprecedented” ability to love who we love, and when recent book bans are said to “roll back the clock” on LGBTQ+ rights, implying that clocks tick continually toward progress. It manifests in Oscar Wilde hagiography, which elevates him to the status of singular queer martyr and extrapolates an epochal paradigm from his 1895 trials. It seeps into our everyday speech, in our references to “forbidden love” and our use of the term “Victorian” to imply prudish homophobia. It both stems from and structures the editorial projects that publishers pursue, giving rise to catalogues like the NYRB Classics, where the oldest work tagged LGBTQ+ is Colette’s The Pure and the Impure (1932) — as if nothing queer was written before.

The truth is that there’s a world of queer writing that predates Colette, volumes of manuscript and books that aren’t so much products of historical suppression as they are suppressed by today’s “it’s gotten better” mindset. This is convenient for a culture industry in search of the sui generis and always eager to pat itself on the back for its own enlightenment. But the almost total neglect, outside the academy, of the queer literary archive is a shame, and not only because it propagates factual errors. In limiting our horizons for understanding how our predecessors lived, loved, and wrote, we end up narrowing our own vistas. When we apply the repressive hypothesis, we’re actually repressing ourselves.

Kevin Adonis Browne returns to Trinidad for his fourth exhibition, A Sense of Arrival: An Exhibition of Essays, which will feature original work from his forthcoming book of the same name. These visual essays, according to Browne, are “a meditation on the complexities of Caribbean being—a memoir inspired by the precarity of the present.” The exhibition, like the book itself, is principally concerned with the articulation of Blackness as an infinite arrival—always “in the making.” In doing so, Browne attempts to orient the viewer toward new realities and mythologies—what we know, are willing to believe, and are able to imagine about Caribbeanness—as a way of being, knowing, and making (in) the world. He approaches some of our “familiar” Caribbean realities in new ways—“new,” in the experiential sense of getting to know and of coming to be known. This, he notes, is a series composed of the humanistic threads of this region—its metaphysics, rhetoric, poetics, and aesthetics. Browne’s award-winning visual and written work have previously existed at the intersection of photography and creative nonfiction. In A Sense of Arrival, he extends beyond those boundaries, reaching into the three-dimensional with a consideration of objects-as-texts in his attempt to articulate what rests at the heart of the Caribbean story. A Sense of Arrival: An Exhibition of Essays opens on October 20, 2022, at 7:00 pm at Medulla Art Gallery, Port of Spain, and will run until November 14, 2022. In addition to the ongoing exhibition, Browne will conduct a free creative nonfiction workshop on October 22 from 11:00-2:00 pm. Limited to 12 participants. Today was High Mas Day. Two years have passed since we danced together in the streets with Moko Jumbies and Blue Devils—and with each other. We danced as the rhythm section beat iron as if they were trying to break the corner open. And they did, didn't they?

You had to be there. And if you were, you'd know the truth: we launched this book. You'd know that this High Mas book of mine is yours, as well. You'd know I did it for you.

Two years have passed, and it's still one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. Much has happened, years full of gains and losses, sweeter and more painful than I could have imagined. But I am as grateful now as I was then. Thank you so much to those who have read this book. (And if you haven't read it yet, you should.
