Remember the midnight chats I mentioned. They became a regular occurrence the first week we were in Bangkok with us subconsciously looking forward to it. Even though mom was coming from Bangalore with just a two hour time difference unlike me, with California being more than half a day behind, both of us seemed to wake up automatically give or take 20 min. She spent some time checking and replying to her WhatsApp messages from the various groups she was part of and then settled in with a hot cup of tea preparing to spend the next couple of hours on the phone, and that’s when I used to wake up. I couldn’t have tea so made do with water considering I had to drink 4-5 bottles or at least 64oz of water every day for the Keto diet I was on to work properly and all the high fat food I was consuming digest properly. As it is my stomach went for a toss the first few days of being on the diet as my body wasn’t used to so much of the rich foods like avocado, cheese, butter and oil with me being constantly on some kind of diet back home at any given point, supposedly to loose the excess weight. I was always on the quest to loose 10-20 pounds for as long as I could remember and had tried everything over the years- walking, cardio, weights even the curves circuit training but all to little or no avail. I wasn’t disciplined enough in my eating and would go on binges of snacking and eating sugary desserts every now and then, hoping for the best while enjoying the food, but wracked with guilt later, knowing it was futile now to cry over spilt milk. But back to the chats...
With me lounging on the bed and mom on the sofa, we talked about everything under the sun, late into the night. About our insights into life and people, the mistakes we had made, the lessons we had learnt along the way, our relationships with friends, kids, each other, our expectations from ourselves and other people and most importantly to stop worrying what the world thinks and be your own person. Having huge mansions, designer clothes, expensive cars, lavish vacations or even the latest i phone just didn’t matter anymore and was inconsequential and I kind of missed the earlier me🤷‍♀️. But I had already spent way too much time trying to conform to the rules of our society and putting up a facade and feigning contentment. Now it was time to stop trying to fit in and do what gives you happiness even if others don’t agree with it, or better yet find it within.
She never got tired of narrating stories of the numerous old schoolmates she had recently got in touch with and describing in detail the reunions and experiences she had with them as she turned back to the 17 year old girl who was the teachers pet and just missed out being the school captain, and I never got tired listening. Stories of the huge malls she went exploring on her own while I was at the hospital, experimenting with different fare at the food courts and discovering the heavenly Thai coconut tapioca pudding with mango which was the best thing she had ever tasted! I was quite content listening to her as wandering about aimlessly at the mall- once my favorite pastime was now a chore that I avoided.
We could talk about anything anytime, anyplace and were never bored in each other’s company.
