Toru Kurosawa Week #6
(MS2-Ending Set) This short, fun little scene is hinted at by Soma during the main story proper, and MC accidentally stumbles on them during one of the extra episodes in the ES. It instantly made both of them 200% more attractive.
I really need a sketch of this scene. Maybe I should be the change I want to see in the world? Though I couldn't possibly do it justice...

This was your typically fun, brisk NEW YEAR DASH!! show, that was as always was more about the angles and story progressions into the year ahead (or indeed, lack there of) as opposed to great matches or anything. Debuting in the Sumida Ward Gym, the show was a mystery card, with the matches only becoming apparent once the participants entered. Things kicked off with Tanahashi defending the World TV Title against Ryusuke Taguchi, in an inoffensive, but totally superfluous opener. It only went 5:40, and was pretty much all your typical Taguchi comedy bout, which Tana obviously won with a cradle. The post match was eventful as a video aired of none other than Matt Riddle challenging Tanahashi, so that's certainly an interesting development. Tana claimed to have no idea who Riddle was. Next up, NOAH Ace Kiyomiya and NJ Young Lion Oiwa put in a losing effort against former tag champs Bishamon. This was a nice little match which saw Goto pin Oiwa after the Shoto in 7:40.
The next outing was Young Lion's Nakashima and Leube's official last match before their excursion. They took on the new Tag Champs, ELP and Hikuleo in a standard tag match. Phantasmo pinned Yuto at the 8 minute mark with Thunder Kiss 86. After bidding the Young Lions farewell, Chase Owens attacked the champions, and announced himself and KENTA as their next challengers. Fab. It was 12 man tag action next as the entire House of Torture took on the New Japan Babyface All-Stars. This was pretty bad, and devolved into the usual HoT nonsense. Umino pinned Togo in 8 minutes after a Death Rider, then the heels beat everyone down in the post match. Narita focussed on Shota, so their feud continues, Kanemaru laid out Despy with a whiskey bottle, so there's his next Jr. Title challenger, and EVIL laid out Tama, cut his hair, and posed with the NEVER Title, which he then stole. I can't possibly pretend that any of these pairings interest me in the slightest, but if there's one positive, it's that at least EVIL isn't anywhere near the main event scene.
United Empire battled the Bullet Club War Dogs next in a 10 man. This was all excellent. The match itself only went 5:10, but it was all-action and super intense; they brawled around the building, Akira hit a balcony dive, Connors Speared and beatdown the referee, Gabe Kidd juiced a gusher after hitting the exposed buckles, the War Dogs all threw chairs and guardrails from the crowd into the ring, and the match was thrown out, ruled a No Contest. There was a crazy post-match beatdown, which included the heels trying to gouge Akira's eye out with a metal object, and he juiced too. Just when it looked like they were done, the UE fought back and cleared house, only for Gedo to blindside Ospreay with a lowblow. They were about to take him out when TJP made the save by Misting Finlay, and Ospreay hit Gedo with a running Powerbomb through an upright table in the corner. Ospreay then said his last night in New Japan is New Beginning in Osaka on February 11th, and challenged all 5 guys to 10 man war fare, and he'd let Finlay choose the stipulation. The new Global Champion chose a Cage Match, so that should be outstanding stuff. This was the highlight of the show by far.
LIJ and Just Five Guys faced off next in a total House Show affair. It wasn't bad, but certainly wasn't good, and the post match didn't fill me with much excitement. TAKA scored his first win in maybe 15 years when he pinned BUSHI with a Michinoku Driver II at 8:47. The post match saw SANADA challenge Naito to a rematch (meh). I'd much rather someone else challenge for the World Heavyweight belt at this point, maybe even Taichi, but this was the inevitable issue with putting the belt back on Naito. There just aren't many/any fresh matches for him. The 2024 KOPW Champion was decided in the next match, which was a pinfalls only 10 minute sprint. This sucked, the crowd was dead, the action uninspired and even though it only went 10 minutes, it felt 30. After O-Khan pinned everyone, Ishimori snuck in, stole a pin, then ran away to beat the clock and win the Championship. Whatever. I think this belt is way past its Use By date now.
And then it was main event time, as the Dream Team of Okada, Ishii, Mox and Danielson took on the TMDK guys. This was lots of fun, everyone looked great and all the individual stories made for a compelling watch. Ishii tore the house down every time he got in there, and Danielson and ZSJ's exchanges were the best wrestling on the show. Obviously. The finish saw Haste and Nicholls put Ishii away with the Tank Buster whilst Sabre had Danielson tied up in a Manjigatame at the 13:50 mark. The post match saw Zack challenge Danielson (now THAT'S a rematch I can get behind!), with both guys promising to tap each other out (despite all the talk of submissions, their last match ended in a pinfall), then Fujita said he, Nicholls and Haste were next for the NEVER 6 Man Titles. Okada was very annoyed at this, saying Fujita was in no way ready to face him, then they stared down Tanahashi on commentary to end and eventful show.

G1 Climax B Block finals preview
Will Ospreay (4-2, 8 points) vs. El Phantasmo (3-3, 6 points) - Only one of these guys can join Kazuchika Okada in the quarterfinals. If ELP wins, he'll have the tiebreaker over everyone else who can finish at 8, so he'll clinch second place. If Ospreay wins or the match goes to a draw, then Okada and Ospreay advance and ELP is out.
By the end of 2019, El Phantasmo was 3-2 in singles matches against Ospreay. Since then, of course, Ospreay moved up to the heavyweight division, won the IWGP world title, and feuded with the likes of Okada and Kenny Omega. Main event headliner Ospreay is unbeaten against Phantasmo, who just hasn't been in his league So as it stands now, ELP is a heavy underdog looking for a career-defining upset win against a top guy.
Phantasmo is clearly the sympathetic favorite, after getting kicked out of Bullet Club, turning over a new leaf, and giving a heartfelt speech about learning his grandfather died during the tournament. That alone won't help him get a win over Ospreay. What will help, though, is that New Japan isn't going to want all their top guys in the quarterfinals, because then half of them would have to do jobs. If Ospreay beats ELP and doesn't win the G1, he's a choke artist. If ELP beats Ospreay and gets eliminated in his next match, he's a success story. So I think everything points to Phantasmo closing the show with a touching babyface promo in Osaka.
Kazuchika Okada (5-1, 10 points) vs. Tanga Loa (3-3, 6 points) - Okada has clinched a spot in the quarterfinals, it's just a question of whether he's in first or second place. If Ospreay wins his match, Okada needs a win or draw to stay in first.
Loa can only reach second place if he wins here, and Taichi doesn't win his match, and Ospreay vs. Phantasmo is ruled a no-contest. Realistically, though, that's not going to happen, so he'll have to settle for trying to get a win over the GOAT, which would at least be a nice feather in his cap. But as usual, I don't bet against Okada; he's winning this block.
Taichi (3-3, 6 points) vs. Great-O-Khan (2-4, 4 points) - Taichi technically could reach second place if he wins and no points are awarded in Ospreay vs. Phantasmo, but I find that highly unlikely. Khan is totally eliminated and mainly fighting to stay out of last place.
I would have expected Taichi to finish with a higher score this year, considering that he's become a fan favorite and he leads his own faction now. On the bright side for him, he was the first man in the block to beat Will Ospreay, so I think that almost guarantees him an IWGP United States title match on the next tour. I would imagine KENTA will challenge Taichi for the KOPW title at some point as well, unless Khan wins here and makes a challenge right away.
The English commentary team has been really selling the idea that Khan is demoralized by his losses in this year's tournament, and he needs to rebuild. I'd like to see that lead to something, but sometimes the English announcers just write their own storylines without any insight into what the actual booker is planning. I'm guessing Taichi wins here and Khan just keeps being the spooky mean guy that can't beat anybody when it counts.
KENTA (2-4, 4 points) vs. YOSHI-HASHI (2-4, 4 points) - Both guys are done and trying to stay out of last place. Yoshi used to be a lovable loser but New Japan started taking him more seriously after the put the IWGP heavyweight tag title on him and Hirooki Goto. Even so, when it comes to singles action he isn't doing much better now than a few years ago. Kenta should probably win here.
Tetsuya Naito & Shingo Takagi & Yota Tsuji & BUSHI vs. EVIL & Yujiro Takahashi & SHO & Dick Togo - This is to build to Takagi vs. Evil on August 8. It's basically the same match from the night before, except with Tsuji and Togo added to it. Togo is probably going to cost his team the match.
Eddie Kingston & Togi Makabe vs. David Finlay & Chase Owens - Kingston vs. Finlay is set for August 8. I'd normally expect Makabe to take the loss in this match, since everyone else is in the tournament. But Owens is already eliminated and he's a glorified jobber. This could actually go either way, I think.
Jeff Cobb & HENARE vs. Tama Tonga & Hiroyoshi Tenzan - Henare will meet Tonga on August 8. If not for that, I'd expect New Japan to seriously consider jobbing out Henare, because I'm impatient with them to take him seriously. But under the circumstances, Tenzan has to drop the fall.
Hiroshi Tanahashi & Tomohiro Ishii vs. Mikey Nicholls & Kosei Fujita - Another preview match, this time for Ishii vs. Nicholls on August 8. Fujita is a full member of TMDK alongside Nicholls, but he's still just a glorified Young Lion, which means he's bound to lose this match.
SANADA & DOUKI vs. Kaito Kiyomiya & Ryohei Oiwa - This one feels kind of random. Oiwa pretty much has to lose.

New Japan Cup final preview
Hirooki Goto vs. Yota Tsuji - This is the final match in the 28-man New Japan Cup tournament. There is no time limit; there must be a winner. Whoever wins the Cup earns the right to challenge the IWGP world heavyweight champion, Tetsuya Naito, on April 6. I personally don't expect Naito to lose that bout, but there'll be plenty of time to get into that later.
Goto is seeking his fourth Cup, having previously won the tournament in 2009, 2010, and 2012. He received byes in the first and third rounds, so he only had to win two matches to get here. At 44 years old, he's an unusual choice to headline this show and (potentially) the next big show. I can't help but wonder if David Finlay was supposed to beat Goto in the quarterfinals, before he was pulled out due to an illness.
This is Tsuji's first New Japan Cup since returning from excursion in May 2023, and he's had to win in every single round to get here. He's under a lot of pressure to live up to the hype, and I'd hate to see him get this close to the brass ring just to choke again, like he did in his world title shot last year. Losing to Goto here would be a letdown. Winning here and losing to Naito on April 6 would almost be worse--that would simply peg him at the level Goto's been stuck in for fifteen years. Tsuji needs to hit one out of the park, and I'm not at all confident that they're going to let him.
In any case, the match should be fun, since I can't recall these two ever facing off one on one before. But it's tough to think about the finish without looking past this match to April 6. Whoever wins here can't settle for the Cup without converting it to a world title victory, and I think they're both underdogs against the champ.
Tetsuya Naito & Shingo Takagi vs. EVIL & Dick Togo - Naito is waiting for the main event to determine his next challenger. Evil eliminated Takagi from the tournament, but then Evil himself was eliminated by LIJ's Yota Tusji. I think it's interesting that all the LIJ members in the building ran in to help Tsuji...except for Naito. That might not mean anything...unless? Anyway, this should be a pretty lopsided matchup, since you've got three top heavyweight champions and Dick Togo, who will almost certainly lose the fall.
SANADA & Taichi & Yuya Uemura & DOUKI & TAKA Michinoku vs. El Phantasmo & Hikuleo & Toru Yano & Jado & Boltin Oleg - Not much story to this match, so I assume the main talking points will be how Sanada was eliminated in the semifinals and it'll be a long road to get back into contention for the world title he lost in January. It might be neat to set up two of Sanada's group to challenge Phantasmo and Hiku for the STRONG tag title. But I wouldn't get my hopes up for that. Oleg or Jado should probably lose here.
YOH vs. Yoshinobu Kanemaru - These two have spent most of the tour fighting over the IWGP junior heavyweight title belt, even though neither of them is the titleholder. The real champion, SHO, has been faking severe injuries ever since he lost to Tetsuya Naito on March 6. Sho won the title from El Desperado in an extremely bullshit way El Desperado on February 23. I feel like this issue won't be settled until we get all these guys in a four-way or something. Which means it probably won't make much difference who wins this match.
Jack Perry & Ren Narita & Yujiro Takahashi vs. Shota Umino & El Desperado & Yuji Nagata - Umino is still trying to get a one-on-one rematch with Perry. Since this is the last night of the tour I assume he'll finally pin Perry to set it up. If Jack is sticking around Japan for a couple of weeks, they could do the match on April 6. But the feud started at a STRONG show in the US, so I could see them saving the match for Chicago on April 12. Regardless, I think Umino's team will win.
KENTA & Chase Owens & Gabe Kidd vs. YOSHI-HASHI & Hiroyoshi Tenzan & Togi Makabe - Kenta and Chase, the IWGP heavyweight tag champions, were eliminated from the New Japan Cup by Hirooki Goto and Yoshi-Hashi, the former champions. So that's clearly the direction for the tag title as soon as Goto is free. Yoshi's team should probably win so he can formally issue a challenge after the match.
Zack Sabre Jr. & Mikey Nicholls vs. Jeff Cobb & Callum Newman - Not much to this match. Sabre, as usual, keeps talking like he's moving up to bigger and better things, even when he doesn't win the matches that would get him there. Nicholls is in a holding pattern until the next time he tours with his regular partner, Shane Haste. Ever since Will Ospreay left for AEW, Cobb has gone on about how the United Empire doesn't need a new leader, and anyway he doesn't need to be called a leader to lead, but it doesn't make any difference because nothing is fucking happening with the United Empire anyway. Newman is here to remind us that he's like Ospreay's little brother, and to get pinned.
Great-O-Khan & TJP & Francesco Akira vs. Tanga Loa & Tomohiro Ishii & Ryusuke Taguchi - Loa eliminated Khan from the New Japan Cup, and on March 18 he formally challenged Khan for the KOPW title. So I guess that match will be happening on April 6, probably. Khan's team is one heavyweight and two junior heavyweights, while Loa's team is two heavyweights and one junior, so this is a big of a mismatch. I know TJP is saying he's openweight, but that label won't do him much good against Ishii. I think Akira or Taguchi could lose the fall here.
Hiromu Takahashi & BUSHI vs. Shoma Kato & Katsuya Murashima - It's LIJ's two main junior heavyweights against two Young Lions who just started wrestling on TV. I haven't even figured out which one is Kato and which one is Murashima yet. I bet Hiromu and Bushi win before I can tell them apart.
