Kenny Garrett – Sounds from the Ancestors

“Sounds from the Ancestors is Kenny Garrett’s fifth album for Detroit’s Mack Avenue label. The connection is significant. The artist grew up in the Motor City and was mentored by some of its most iconic musicians, including the late trumpeter Marcus Belgrave. Garrett has often referenced the sounds of his hometown including Motown soul, gospel, and its ever-evolving jazz and blues scenes. But here for the first time, he meditates upon them simultaneously, examining their roots in the music of West Africa and its role in the musical development of France, Cuba, Guadeloupe, and of course, Nigeria. Garrett’s core band includes pianist Vernell Brown, Jr. bassist Corcoran Holt, drummer Ronald Bruner, Jr., and percussionist Rudy Bird. He also enlisted a guest cast that includes drummer Lenny White, pianist/organist Johnny Mercier, trumpeter Maurice Brown, conguero Pedrito Martinez, and batá percussionist Dreiser Durruthy, as well as a handful of singers. In addition to playing alto saxophone, Garrett plays electric piano.” – Thom Jurek/AllMusic.

In a career that took flight in 1985 with commercial and critical acclaim, guitar vertuoso Stanley Jordan has consistently displayed a chameleonic musical persona of openness, imagination, versatility and maverick daring. Be it bold reinvention of classical masterpieces or soulful explorations through pop-rock hits, to blazing straight ahead jazz forays and ultramodern improvisational works, solo or with a group, Jordan can always be counted on to take listeners on breathless journeys into the unexpected. He had originally studied piano, although he switched to guitar when he was 11. Jordan came to prominence with the release of his "Magic Touch" album in 1985. Jordan uses two hand to play each note. One hand presses down a guitar string behind a chosen fret to prepare the not, and the other hand either plucks or strums the string to play that note. Jordan's touch technique is an advanced from two handed tapping. His technique allows the guitarist to play melody and chords simultaneously. He plays guitar in all-fourthes tuning, from bass to treble EADGCF. In this video clip Jordan performing Led Zeppelin's "STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN" jaw-dropping instrumental cover, which is often referred to as one of the greatest rock songs of all time.
