An Excellent Mentor

A mentor is someone who is good at listening, not afraid of giving feedback and knows when to let you be on your own and when to give guidance. A good mentee is someone who can take the feedback, isn't afraid to make mistakes and can learn from it.

Throughout the week at Gannet Fleming, Huzefa, has been a very engaged mentor. He has had us go to different meetings, tours and some site visits in order to get us to understand how the firm works. He also has given us projects then we will have meetings discussing what we found and how we can move forward in the future. We also got very valuable feed back when he looked at our resumes, portfolios and even our map site. He has been and excellent mentor and made our time here wonderful and engaging.

An Educational Client

We visited a renovation project. Our client is the city of Brooklyn and they want to create a new school. There are certain stipulation about finding the correct area for the school, it's accessibility and it location to things such as parks. The building that was chosen was a building that is owned by a church. So the city will rent this space from the church in order to turn this building into a new school. Because of this a lot of thought was put in to renovating the building while keeping the area roughly the same incase the city moves the school. There was also thought on the artwork and biblical murals on the wall. These could not be removed or painted over so and idea to solve this was to create a barrier structure and paint that the same color as the walls. How many murals can you find in the top left picture? Other challenges was making sure the building met regulations for students as well as creating an atmosphere to learn in.

Workplace (Can)Drive

The first day at Gannett Fleming NYC was great! Everyone we met was friendly and open to talking about projects and even daily life. The open atmosphere and size of each workspace was open enough to allow for collaboration between co-workers but intimate enough to not be distracted by others.

We were invited to be apart of a meeting for charity project called "Canstruction." Canstruction is a global non-profit charity were a group will create a structures out of full cans of food which is donated to local foodbanks. I believe being apart of this is a great way to experience teambuilding within the firm while also being able to give something back to the community.
