Researching Sui and Oga's names made me curious about the other characters' names, especially the main characters. So here's a rundown of what I found!

Taiyo: Taiyo's full name is Asano Taiyo (朝野 太陽). His first name "Taiyo" is written with the characters for "sun" (太陽). His surname "Asano" means "morning" (朝) and "field" or "wild thing" (野). His full name is also pronounced exactly like the phrase asa no taiyo, which means "morning sun", hence why his classmates made jokes about Taiyo's gloominess not matching his name in the first chapter. It's a very light-coded name! It's also a sharp contrast to the rest of the Yozakura's names, as you'll soon see.

Yozakura: The Yozakura's surname is spelled with the characters for "night" (夜) and "sakura (blossoms)" (桜). You may notice that the second half of the name (-zakura) is just the word "sakura" with a "Z" sound. Some Japanese words turn "S" sounds into "Z" sounds when preceded by certain sounds, though I'm not sure what's causing that shift here. In any case, their name can be translated into something like "dark cherry blossoms" or "nighttime sakura."

Mutsumi: Mutsumi's full name is Yozakura Mutsumi (夜桜 六美). The characters in Mutsumi's name mean "six" (六) and "beautiful" (美). Notably, she's the only Yozakura sibling whose name has a benevolent connotation rather than something ominous or dark.

Kyoichiro: Kyoichiro's full name is Yozakura Kyoichiro (夜桜 凶一郎). His first name is a doozy: all together, it means "ill fortune, bad omen" (凶), "one" (一), and "son" (郎). So he's the ominous/bad luck first son of the Yozakura family.

Futaba: Futaba's full name is Yozakura Futaba (夜桜 二刃). The characters in her first name means "two" (二) and "blade, sword" (刃). Very fitting for her sharp, precise personality.

Shinzo: Shinzo's full name is Yozakura Shinzo (夜桜 辛三). The kanji in his first name mean "bitter, painful" (辛) and "three" (三). The kanji 辛 is also used colloquially as a measurement for spiciness, as in "curry with spiciness level 1". It's a surprisingly biting name for someone with such a gentle temperment!

Shion: Shion's full name is Yozakura Shion (夜桜 四怨). The characters in her first name mean "four" (四) and "anger, resentment" (怨).

Kengo: Kengo's full name is Yozakura Kengo (夜桜 嫌五). The characters in his first name mean "gross, disagreeable, unpleasant" (嫌) and "five" (五). The character 嫌 is actually an alternate spelling of the phrase いや, which basically means "yuck!" Very fitting of Kengo's silly teenage boy vibe lmao.

Nanao: Nanao's full name is Yozakura Nanao (夜桜 七悪). His first name has the characters for "seven" (七) and "evil, hated thing" (悪). Very loaded name for such a sweet kid! Fun fact, the character 悪 can be pronounced "aku", which is where Aku from Samurai Jack gets his name.

Additionally, you may have noticed that all of the Yozakura siblings' names have a numeral character corresponding to their birth order: Kyoichiro (one), Futaba (two), Shinzo (three), Shion (four), Kengo (five), Mutsumi (six), and Nanao (seven).

For the side characters:

Seiji: Seiji's full name is Hotokeyama Seiji (仏山 聖司). His first name, Seiji, means something like "head priest", with "sei" (聖) meaning "a virtuous person/a Buddhist monk or priest" and "ji" (司) meaning "director, boss." "Hotokeyama" (仏山) means roughly "holy mountain"; the kanji 仏 specifically refers to any Buddha statue or an enlightened person according to Buddhist doctrine. So his name is very heavy on the religious symbolism, which makes an interesting contrast to (or perhaps resonates with?) his violent and fervent belief in absolute judgement.

Ayaka: Ayaka's full name is Kirisaki Ayaka (切崎 殺香). Her first name, Ayaka, has the characters for "kill, murder" (殺) and "fragrant" (香). Ayaka's surname, Kirisaki, means "cut, be sharp" (切) and "peninsula" (崎). Her last name is also a bit of a pun because the character 切 can also mean "to be eager," which is one of Ayaka's defining character traits.

Asuka: Asuka's full name is Hatoda Asuka (鳩田 飛鳥). His first name, Asuka, means "to fly" (飛) and "bird/poultry" (鳥). His surname, Hatoda, has the characters for "pigeon, dove" (鳩) and "rice field" (田). So basically he's a birdbrain lmao.
