Because I recently went to see WDAS' most recent film, Wish, and because it's their centennial, and because I'm currently listening to a mega-draft podcast of the films, here are my Top Ten Walt Disney Animation Studios films (not my list of personal favorites, the top ten films I would say are the top ten best of the canon):
Beauty and the Beast (1991) - an assuredly told version of the story, an outstanding score, stellar cast and voice work paired with great animation, a highlight of the medium of animation
Pinocchio (1940) - this was their second one out of the gate! i mean there's so much to admire: the shot of jiminy's perspective as he hops to geppetto's shop, the overhead shot of the town, the horror of lampwick turning into a donkey, the monstro chase, everything with figaro and cleo!!!
Sleeping Beauty (1959) - they set out to create a literal moving work of art and they did it. the tchaikovsky score and gorgeous painted backgrounds, PLUS you got The Golden Girls raising a child in the woods, "And now you shall deal with me O Prince, and all the powers of Hell!" FUCK.
101 Dalmatians (1961) - I watched this in its entirety for the first time as an adult after previously only seeing part of it once or twice and I never knew how fucking tight of a film this is. So tightly told. And it looks exciting and charming. A real gem from the studio.
Cinderella (1950) - the part when the grand duke is talking to the king about how the prince would react if the girl of his dreams showed up to the ball and they show the prince reacting to cindy walking into the ballroom, good shit. the message of "a dream is a wish your heart makes" gets a bad rap, but it's a pretty song and sentiment. also this movie has one of my favorite animated scenes where lady tremaine wakes up the stepsisters to tell them about the slipper and cinderella slowly realizes she danced with the prince the night before and she has this dreamy look on her face and then lady tremaine figures what's up and they pull in on her glowing green eyes and it's over for her. also I think this is one of the most gorgeous and elegant animated films. cinderelly, cinderelly!
The Little Mermaid (1989) - this probably wouldn't be on my list a few years ago, but with the live action adaptation this year and its entry into the National Film Registry, I've been reconsidering this movie and it's such a joyous and ✨ magical ✨ animated work with an emotional center that connects with so many who watch it. the YEARNING. ashman understood it. also, glen keane's (i believe he animated this part?) animation on the part of your world reprise is glorious with that fucking hair, pat carroll and the design of ursula, a heavenly match. and menken's delightful score. it's so good.
Aladdin (1992) - this is actually my number one personal fave, it's the VHS tape I watched the most growing up, but I think this is a good placement for it. It's beautiful to look at, it's a full-fledged animated comedy, it's the last of howard ashman's contributions, "friend like me" is one of the best animated sequences ever, aladdin was my first animated crush, i still stan jasmine, it spawned a pretty terrific spinoff series, jonathan freeman's cackle is the best villain cackle, and of course, robin. also, ron clements and john musker are kings.
Lilo & Stitch (2002) - the more time passes, the more I think this film proves itself to be a grand achievement in the canon. the amount of sentiment is just right, stitch is an entertaining creation and his connection with lilo is relatable, i mean the ending scene always gets me with the "it's broken but still good", also the fact that not another film in the canon looks like this one makes it stand out. and the ending shot of stitch's picture attached to the weathered family photo, ugh. it's also a love letter to "weird little kids". i love it.
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) - i mean, yeah. it's scary, it's silly, the queen's transformation into the hag still rules. "one song" is an underrated song.
The Emperor’s New Groove (2000) - this movie is legendary. the story of how it came to be is insane. i read that there is actually no completed screenplay of the movie??? that's how much they had to scramble to put this together? i would also put this on a list of great comedy films. eartha kitt, eartha kitt. i don't know what things would look like if we actually got kingdom of the sun, but we are so lucky to have this hilarious movie.

Book 45: The Icepick Surgeon
This week was a choice book, and last week has piqued my interest in a science history book again and who's more fun than Sam Kean? So I thought The Icepick Surgeon: Murder, Fraud, Sabotage, Piracy, and Other Dastardly Deeds Perpetrated in the Name of Science would make for a fun read. I suppose I should have paid more attention to the subtitle, because sure it had fun piracy, dinosaur wars, and money lender murders, but it also has slavery, misgendering and animal torture. Not all fun topics at all.
The first topic was piracy and that was fun, but the second was how science was entangled with slavery. Even something as abstract as Newton's Principia Mathematica used slave ship data on tides to propose the moon affected tides. Natural science was even worse and one could practically only get to Sub-Saharan Africa or South America to study plants and animals by slave ship transport and once there that was who you had to trade with for supplies. Even worse, many unscrupulous naturalists relied on slaves to gather samples, especially in the more dangerous areas. So tons of science museums' collections are built on slavery (in addition to the outright theft of property in history museums).
Other topics include the origins of forensic pathology helping solve a Harvard murder that resulted in the second and so far last Harvard graduate (and professor) to be executed, the dehumanizing experiments performed on a teenage Ted Kaczynski that undoubtedly helped turn him into the unibomber, and a overzealous yet lazy drug lab scientist swearing in court that a crushed up cashew was crack cocaine. The title refers to Walter Freeman performing lobotomies with a kitchen Icepick.
Best line: "Now, there's no truth to the rumor that Freeman dubbed the car he used on these trips "The Lobotomobile", but probably only because he didn't think of it."
Should you read this book: well, if you can stomach all the crimes against humanity and animals, it is very interesting. But there is a lot to take in. Sam Kean is always smooth, interesting reading
Art project: Here are a handful of the dinosaurs discovered during the dinosaur wars, all impossibly ranged in age and size .

A hard as nails cop reluctantly teams up with a wise-cracking criminal temporarily paroled to him, in order to track down an escaped convict cop killer. The mismatched buddy buddy formula exploded onto the screen here in a ball of violence, profanity and pin sharp one liners. It also launched Eddie Murphy into 1980s stardom. Directed by Walter Hill and starring Nick Nolte alongside Murphy as part of an electrifying black and white double act, it’s unrelenting in pace and bad attitude. It could have been so different though, with the likes of Stallone, Reynolds, Pryor and Hines attached at various times for lead parts, it now is written in folklore that Murphy got the break and grasped it with both hands (he was actually fired at one point mind!). Thankfully the problems behind the scenes were resolved to give us a classic of its type. A big success for Paramount it paved the way for more choice same formula pictures in the decade, but few were able to be so course and daring with the racial divide explosions. Murphy is outstanding, quick as an A.K. 47 in vocal d...

The Raw Power of Andy taking the fire emergency axe, exclaiming ‘ENOUGH WITH THIS SHIT’ and wacking her way through the enemies has no compare in the history of cinema.
At some point she loses the axe and still she wins. All hail the Queen.
In the meantime, Nicky has woken up and we all lose our collective minds over the reassuring forearm touch he and Joe exchange before returning operative.
“What do you say, boss? Oslo ‘67?”
“Sao Paulo ‘34”
Ok but now I want to know what ‘Oslo ‘67’ stands for guys, don’t leave me out.
“What happened in Sao Paulo in 1934?”
“It was 1834 and you’ll see”
ARE YOU TELLING ME THAT JOE THREW HIMSELF INTO A BUILDING FROM OUTSIDE A WINDOW IN 1834???? I WANT F O O T A G E OF THAT, HOW DID HE DO THAT???? ANSWER MY QUESTIONS ANDY
Merrick in the penthouse holding Andy’s labrys like he’s going to chop wood with it is ridiculous and needs to be laughed at until the end of time.
“Wait for the signal” “Will it be like the other one?” “Go big or go home!”
I wonder what ‘the signal’ was before explosives were invented and/or widely available... picture Andy dancing in celebration when dynamite was put on the market like ‘FINALLY I DON’T HAVE TO USE FIREWORKS ANYMORE’
Nile trying desperately to get Andy to wear the anti-bullet jacket looks like a Harried Mother dealing with a Petulant Child, oh how the tables have turned
Keane: “What the fuck are they waiting for?”
*JOE CRASHES INTO THE ROOM*
me: “for that”

Conversation
the old guard characters as food i make now that ive moved away from home
andy: tortellini soup. the tortellini is from a package, usually dried, because lets be practical here, but the soup is homemade from scratch and completely varied. recently - homemade tomato soup that turned out BOMB. warm and hearty or light and easy, very dependable yet incredible
joe: vegetarian chili, made mostly of various beans and never tastes the same way twice because you just add what feels right at the moment. a hearty meal to last several days or serve a household. accidentally too spicy for half of the target consumers, but that means more for me
nicky: oatmeal chocolate chip cookies, no recipe, just from memory, baked exclusively after 1:30am with the dishes and everything done and put away before anyone else is awake. bonus points for not acknowledging their presence unless questioned
booker: mac and cheese! usually also homemade, creamy and baked in the oven with some extra cheese and breadcrumbs. can be so good depending on what ive got in the pantry. i am lactose intolerant, and yet 10/10
nile: oatmeal, cooked in a pot with milk, a splash of vanilla and cinnamon, and an apple thats been cut up and added just enough to warm up but still retain its crispness. a bit of honey over top sometimes for sweetness. make somethings special out of it :). or just desert
copley: egg fried rice. a new (although not particularly difficult) addition to my repertoire but a necessary and delicious one. why was i not doing this sooner its so good to eat, to use up leftovers, to shove a bunch of vegetables into. 10/10
BONUS - Housemate's Foods Edition
merrick: a single slice of white bread, untoasted, with unsalted butter scraped across the top, and all topped with a hefty squirt of ketchup to round it all out. im disgusted, and ive expressed this, yet here we are
keane: yoghurt. so much plain yoghurt. its gone bad in the fridge please stop buying so much at a time. yes thats mold, throw it out please. months old fake butter. how does this happen.

The Old Guard-Pacific Rim AU/Crossover Ideas
I’m writing the obligatory Old Guard/Pacific Rim AU Crossover fic, and here’s what I’ve got so far.
- Andy is Raleigh in this senario (broody, slight depressed, lost-a-loved-one pretty boy? Yeah, that’s Andy to a T)
- Nile is Mako (because of course she is)
- Andy lost Quynh in a mission, in which Quynh was trapped inside the other half of a Jeager when they were attacked, and Quynh sunk to the bottom of the sea in it. After which Andy leaves to go off to the coastal wall project.
- Andy and Quynh’s Jeager is called Labrys
- Joe and Nicky’s Jeager is called The Crusader (on second thought, no, bad idea, let’s name it something else, The Scimitar? The Longsword? OR The Mouse?)
- Joe and Nicky are the Kaidanovskys in this scenario, (the married Russian Jeager pilots)
- Keane is Hannibal Chau (because he fits, take a moment to think about it)
- Merrick and Dr. Kozack take the places of Herman and Newton respectively. (because I said so, that’s why. No, I don’t take criticism)
- Lykon is Marshal Pentecost (shut up I’m a f*cking genius)
- Nile is his ward who teams up with Andy to pilot the defunct Labrys (because hell YEAH)
- Booker and Copley are the Hansens, and they pilot the Jeager called the Frenchman (yes, I know I’m a genius)
- The fight scene Andy and Nile had in the plane, is now the training/fight scene between Raleigh and Mako - Quynh still comes back at the end of course! She survived due to exposure to Kaiju Blue (Kaijui blood) - I need someone to be Tendo and I’m blanking out here. - The highlight of this is that Andy and Nile are drift compatible (literally every character is with a drift compatible partner in this AU) - Does anyone die? I’m still working that out
- Andy and Booker still have the Raleigh/Chuck showdown, naturally
- The Jeager Program is now called The Old Guard program, (obviously) Got any ideas? lay them on me.

“De rien,” he said then. “Joe,” he added just a moment before he could quit the call.
“Yes?” Joe asked and Booker was quiet for another moment.
“Find him,” he said then. “Bring him home.”
“I will,” Joe said.

A selection of texts from my friend watching The Old Guard for the first time
1) Andy arriving at the hotel and getting hugs: Oh. I'm very bisexual.
2) Nile trying to run away from Andy: What is she DOING? Like... Charlize could kidnap me LITERALLY Any day. Ma'am, throw me over your shoulder and carry me. Away. I do admire Freeman's determination though.
3) Andy refuses to tell Nile how old she is: OKAY BUT HOW OLD THOUGH? I know we've moved on but like... WHICH eldrich goddess WERE you Charlize?
4) The story of Quynh: Okay but...Wouldn't it rust?? I feel like... it would have rusted. But also what an excellent villain origin story? For a sequel perhaps?
5) The van scene: OH GOD OH GOD I AM NOT. OH GOD Oh fuck.
6) Booker shooting Andy: BOOOOOOOKER NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BOOKER YOU FUCK YOU FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKING FUCK
7) Booker tells Merrick to let Andy go: AWWW Now your ethics pop up? Get fucked asshole.
8) Joe kills Keane: Oh that was. Yes. "Should not have done that." Neck snap. Yes very sexy.
9) The Quynh reveal: AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH THE CAGE ROTTED YESSSSSSSSSSS I WAS CORREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEECT
I love witnessing people’s first watch. Gonna try to get her to watch Il Padre d’Italia next.
