12/12/23.
I get daily reminders of the pace with which life passes by. Itasca's new album "Imitation of War" will be coming out in early 2024. And, I remember enjoying Kayla Cohen's earlier releases, but I guess it just doesn't seem like 7 1/2 years ago that I did that enjoying.
There is only one song currently available, but if the rest of the album sounds like the song "Imitation of War" then we're all in for a treat as Cohen turns up the reverb to sound like a cross between Weyes Blood and Felt. I'm still reminded of Hollie Fullbrook of Tiny Ruins. I would add Erin Umstead of Local Tourist.
This is being released by Paradise of Bachelors.

Further Cosmic Pedal Steel Situations :: Winter 2024
The cosmic pedal steel scene continues to expand — and we’re here for it. Daniel Lanois, one of the godfathers of this movement, once called the pedal steel “my little church in a suitcase.” And if anything ties these various musicians together, it’s a certain kind of earthy spirituality, an openness to the myriad possibilities that the instrument offers. Check out a few of my recent favorites over at Aquarium Drunkard.
And while you're over at AD — well, we've got a fab 2024 going for you already. Check out Brent Sirota's magnificent Fourth World mixtape ... or the latest installment of James Adams' Dylan-tastic bootleg column Diamonds From The Deepest Oceans ... or Jennifer Kelly's convo with Kayla "Itasca" Cohen (her new one is ridiculously good) ... or Michael Klausman's appreciation of Butch Hornsby's lost 70s classic Don't Take It Out On The Dog ... or J. Neas' Q&A with the GBV gawd Robert Pollard ... this is all in the first couple of weeks, people! I've said it before and I'll say it again: what a cool website!

Liminal Ambiguity
Summary
Expectations are a thing where people reveal their worth to others and themselves. How would someone like myself could afford to bridge the gap between my halo and horns? Am I truly worth the task at hand to appease those expectations, or simply able to burn the alleged faith in me from other people? Emerson is starting his life as a new upstart adult in a world where crimes and infidelity are growing exponentially. With family on his end pressuring to make better decisions for himself, he barely has the effort to attempt the decision he finds for himself and for himself. Until he meets someone worth the effort to hide his stress for a few nights…Or maybe forever?

1: Remembrance
-Emerson-
I wonder if my father truly loves me. Is he loathing the idea of my failing aspirations, or is the opportunity to reconstruct my identity too much to bear for him? I questioned his motives sometimes when I was involved. He says he has my best interest at heart, but I have yet to see any form of his love towards me to be present. Sometimes, I wished my mother was still here to keep the peace between my father and myself.
I walked into my on-suite bathroom, staring at myself in the mirror, absorbing the self-loathing I had placed in myself countless times. I have a few blemishes here and there. I lift up my shirt to smell the stench of the alcohol from last drenching my body. Great, I was going to freshen up quickly and climb back into my bed to sleep the day away, but I think a divine intervention has something else in store for me.
"Emerson, your father wanted to know if you were awake. He wishes that you quickly wrap up your morning routine and meet him in his office immediately. Also, good morning, Emerson. Hopefully, today will be the day that good news will bless you." Our butler, Ulysses, mentioned this to me before exiting my bedroom.
It's nice hearing his voice. I hope he doesn't leave, too. I turned on the shower and climbed into the burning barrage of water droplets, stabbing me into the leftover scars left by my past temperaments and discretions. This may ease my mind off what my father would be plotting to sabotage my free will yet again. It has not been even a whole year since the last time I had to beg for his forgiveness. Am I really that much of a shameful excuse of a son that he is going to punish me again. Will his chamber members of the executive be there again? Will they also need me to cleanse myself for them to relieve them of my sorrow? I can only find out by meeting him in his office. What do I have to lose that I already lost?
~
I walked towards his office when I noticed Ulysses fanning me over towards him. He removed his right glove from his hand and placed it on my shoulder. I looked into his face to see a smile on his face. I haven't seen a smile on his face since my dad called me back from boarding school three years after my mother's death. This may be good news for once.
"Be careful, and don't do anything you will regret doing. I hate seeing you hurt." Ulysses stated to me before laying a small kiss on my forehead.
"Thanks; let me get this over with before he reconsiders whatever he has in store for me," I told Ulysses before knocking on my father's office door, waiting for him to say something.
I stare at the door that started it all for me. My announcement of my birth by my mother to the removal of my name from my father and reside at Lady Lily Boarding School of Troubled Youths. I went through so much there. I was trapped there with no outside communication because my father wanted nothing to do with me at the time. My mother yelled at him for sending me away because I was too weak to form coherent thoughts and like-minded ideals like himself. He said the school would help shape me into a man like himself. He said I was troubled by the thoughts that went through my mind.
I was troubled, alright. The mental and emotional assaults by the priests and nuns to the physical assaults from the other boys who were there seeking the same thing as myself, but in the difference between the both of us, they were truly troubled. They took something from me I would never want any man or woman to experience. They took my innocence, pride, and the least amount of sanity I had at the time. I was only going to go to the school for one year, my father said to prove to me that I was not troubled, but after the person I trusted there to support me throughout my year there, he beat me up and sexually assaulted me to prove that I was just as troubled as everyone else here.
All I could hear was him laughing at me as he silenced me each time, emphasizing his position and views on me stroke by stroke. After he finished, I snapped. I picked up the nearest object and beat the living shit out of him to prevent him from hurting anyone else ever again. It was all a ploy from my father to prove to my mother that I could not be saved from simple parenting but hard love. He didn't expect the kid to go this far with me, but nonetheless, my father won in my mother's eyes. I was left behind for another two years to be falsely rehabilitated for something that was never a part of me. Yet, I was still victimized in my own mind to live with the failure I had given my mother, the only person who saw the best in me, to walk away from her greatest blessing. I was able to bless her with my life. Now, I was a curse that killed my mother and pushed my father to believe in his perspective of me.
"Come in." I hear my father's voice behind the door. I walked through the door to see him in one of his countless luxurious suits. "You're late. Have a seat." I nodded and sat across from him.
I looked up at my father, hoping he would finally look me in the eyes for a change, but all he was doing was looking at documents and his calendar. Once again, after all these short years after my 'shameful' display at the school and when I returned home after my mother's death, he would never look at me nor acknowledge me as his son.
"Good morning, d- Mr. Brimfield. I am sorry for my lateness. It won't happen again." I told my father. He looked up from his folders of documents and calendar and saw my sorrowful face. He had a soft smile before it quickly fell off his face.
"I see you refrained from calling me by paternal nouns here. I guess letting you stay at that school for another two years did you some good. Then again, your mother's death also did a number on your mental health and self-awareness of authority around you. I think I could give you something that would shed more light on the Brimfield name. Ulysses, call in Mr. Rose. He needs to see who his new assignment will be." My father mentioned that he had commanded Ulysses to bring some strangers to his office.
"An assignment? Am I going on a trial or something, Sir?" I asked my father, confused. I looked behind myself to only go pale in the face. "What the fuck is he doing here?" I wondered, mumbling and shaking at a loss for words, that my father would continue to hurt me even after the will my mother left behind.
My father walked over towards the guy who violently assaulted me six years ago and got me in this mess, being hugged and cherished more than I have ever received from my father. I was born to be tormented and tortured by the man who was supposed to nourish and love me unconditionally.
"Watch your mouth, boy. This successful young man's family is a potential business partner. I asked them if their son had any time to partner with my son on a chance to redeem himself in my eyes and achieve his mother's wishes. They said he doesn't have any other obligation on their end, so I asked them to help you help me." My father said coldly as he twisted the words of my dead mother into my face.
Michael Rose is the guy who has broken me even more than I have ever been. He destroyed my image of my mother of ever being saved from my torment of a place that started to 'repair' broken young men and women. Michael was another broken boy, but he was indeed troubled but as a troublemaker. He always pulled pranks and bullied me here and there. However, everyone on the campus loved him, from the Holy Father to all the students who attended the school. After my little explosive moment with him in one of the sports teams' supplies shed, they loved him even more, giving him a chance to leave school early. However, I heard he rejected the opportunity and stayed until graduation like I did.
Now, at the age of 21, I look at him. He is taller than before and relatively in shape. His eyes are still the same shade of icy blue from all those years ago, and he has the same dark brownish-black hair to follow suit. I trusted this person with my mind, body, and soul. He desecrated all three of them in a matter of a short year. He smiled at me as he turned to my father with concern.
"I am not sure this will work out, Mr. Brimfield. Your son is uncomfortable with me being here." Michael mentioned it to my father. My father looked at me and back to him with a cocked brow.
"Wait in his room until I am done with him. My butler will walk you to his room. I will get to the bottom of this foolishness." My father growled as he dismissed Michael from his office, closing the door behind him. My father locked the door and walked over towards me. "You have the nerve to make a fool out of me again. Did you learn anything after all these years besides shitting yourself? I honestly swear you can be hopeless and disgraceful." My father slapped me in the face as he stabbed me with more words of affirmation that all of this was nothing more than a lie.
I stumbled, falling in front of his desk. I stare at my father, shaking at the countless beatings and punishments that occurred in this room. This place was never a happy place. The very fact that this room used to be my mother's library turned into yet another one of his offices to build another wall between my own escape from his tyrannical rule over my mind and displace my mother further away from me.
"He was the one that broke my trust all those years again! You expect me to just forget about everything he did to me! That will never happen!" I shouted at my father, pulling myself up from the ground.
My father walked over swiftly, picking me up and slamming me onto his desk. He slapped me twice across the face as he stared into my eyes with the same rage he did when I was defending myself all those years ago from my rapist. He slammed me over and over again onto his desk, feeling my heart break each time he dropped me. Why couldn't it have been you?
"If he did all those things, you should have begged forgiveness when they tried to press charges against you. It took all your hard work to get a good lawyer to acquit all the charges against you, Emerson. When I finally thought you would become a man like your father. Respectable. Honorable. Disciplined. I thought I could even start calling you my son rather than Adanna's boy. You turned around and pulled this shit. The boy was in intensive care for over a year. He even forgives you for the assault, but you, of all people, believed you were better than God himself and refused it. Take this opportunity as a form of redemption for your past discrepancies and reflect." My father drilled into my mind once again.
I felt tears fall down my face. I always wanted to hear those words come from his mouth. He pulled me up from the desk and pulled me in for a vile embrace. I stood there in fear of what he may do next. He pulled me in tighter, leaning close to my right ear. "You better not fuck this up, son. If you do, you can relive that same event for the next thirty to fifty years. If that event happened, of course." My dad mentioned pushing me out of his office to get back to work before.
Why did my mother have to leave me instead of him? I try my hardest every day to one day get his approval again, like when I was younger. I missed the man who saw me as one of his successful projects. The happiness that left him was euphoric. He was happy for months. He would play with me, read books, and have countless sleepovers. Now, I look back at it to see if it was indeed the happy memories he provided, or were they simply requests from my mother to bond with me since he wanted an heir to the company someday.
I walked up the stairs in shame to just crawl into my bed and cry my eyes out for yet another failed attempt to appease my father's hunger for higher glory and happiness. I walked into my room to see my abuser extinguishing my escape from the world engulfed by my father. I want to push him out of my window and kill myself in the process to make my father suffer both in his career and honestly as a father.
I left the door open just in case something happened. Michael walked towards me, keeping his distance. He stared at my face and my unkempt clothes. "I heard a lot of shouting down there. I never knew Mr. Brimfield to be so vocal. He was always a man of a few words. I know you properly didn't forget about me, but I was finally able to talk to you after all this mess." I glared at Michael as he said those words with such a chirping tone. Even now, he is mocking my domestic abuse and the abuse I experienced from him secondhand.
"Why the fuck are you here? Didn't you do enough to hurt me? You were my only friend for a long time and stole six long years from me. You suppose a little conversation between us would fix my lost teenage years, and the invasive therapy sessions would alleviate what happened all those years!" I yelled at Michael, crying my eyes out as all those words and the ability to stand against him finally gave me something he stole from me to reappear. My ability to think and be selfish.
"It might not be, but I am willing to start over. I never got the chance to tell you that I was sorry. I took advantage of you and your loneliness and did things that no one should ever do to someone. I understand that you may not trust me again, but I know that your father believes I didn't do anything to you. He even tried to see if I would storm out of this room after my plea for forgiveness. He even threatens you with the same assault I caused you six years ago. I was an idiot trying to feed off anything that would make me feel good. If you want to continue where you left off, I have accepted that year after my release from the hospital." Michael stated firmly as he walked closer, dropping a heavy object in my hands.
I opened my eyes to see it was a pistol with a silencer on it. I looked at him in horror yet glee. I have the chance, with no restraints, to end the life of the person that harmed me. I checked the magazine and saw nothing there. I disarmed the gun to see if the chamber had a round in it, but to my shock, the gun was empty. Michael pulled out a necklace with a bullet stained with dried blood on it, sealed in a fairy bottle.
"Is this some sick joke, Michael? Is giving me this gun to kill you as a returned favor for what you did to me?" I asked him as my blood began to boil. He walked over towards me with a hug. I can feel my heart and breathing quickly start to accelerate.
"It is what I can do, at least. After I lead them all to this point, including you." Michael told me softly as if his voice had gotten remorseful. I looked up at him, trying to connect the decaying nerves in my brain to make one last critical thinking point before I potentially fail my father and especially my mother again.
"What did he hire you for?"
"To be your friend again."
You can't be serious. Is my father trying to help me for a chance, or is he trying to redeem himself for lost time? I have to figure that out.
A/N
I hoped I did not run you all away from this shameless and shotty comeback sort of. Awkward thinking this is how I wanted to return, but here I am back at last somewhat. See you in the next chapter.

#32 Spiral (2019)
Entretenida" - Cinema's life

Itasca — Imitation of War (Paradise of Bachelors)
Kayla Cohen’s last album as Itasca, Spring, came out back in 2019. My interest in that record was piqued by the involvement of Chris Cohen and Cooper Crain, but the results were mixed. In my Dusted review (my first for the site) I concluded: “As a listening experience it’s akin to viewing a watercolor painting, its delicate hues no doubt appealing to anyone attuned to such subtlety. But to someone aching for a little more conviction, grit and risk, it may prove frustratingly listless.” Imitation of War addresses these shortcomings, and then some.
Most importantly, Imitation of War feels more like an evolved, full-band recording, rather than a solo, singer-songwriter record embellished by the contributions of other musicians. Though Cohen strips back to just voice and her formidable guitar chops on songs such as “Under Gates of Cobalt Blue” and “Olympia,” it’s the full-band songs that really shine. The album is co-produced by Robbie Cody (Wand, Behavior), with Evan Backer (Wand) on bass, and Evan Burrows (Wand) and Daniel Swire (Gun Outfit) on drums. Right from the opener, “Milk,” Cohen’s guitar playing takes center stage, demonstrating she’s as skilled on electric guitar as she is on acoustic. In one channel the guitar swirls with delicate modulation, and in the other, a second clean electric guitar plays call-and-response with the first. Down the middle, the rhythm section pins down a deep, solid groove.
Another point of difference on this new record is Cohen’s voice, which is deeper, smokier, and more empathetic to the songs’ shifting moods. Comparison with Joni Mitchell is valid, though Cohen’s vocal tends to weave between the interstices of the instruments rather than sail over the top. It’s hard to make out what she’s singing about, but the mood is undeniable: reflective, and melancholy yet hopeful.
The album’s highlights, “Imitation of War” and “Tears on Sky Mountain,” inject more life into the band performances, upping the tempo and nudging Cohen into a higher register. Then, on the nine-minute “Easy Spirit,” Cohen and her co-conspirators improbably morph into a full-blooded jam band, pushing and pulling the song’s tempo during lengthy instrumental stretches and pointing the Itasca project in a thrilling new direction.

Spiral (2019)
Spiral is a valiant effort. You can tell everyone was trying their hardest and towards the end of the film, it does expose a kernel of intelligence that - if you’re dying to see an LGBT+ horror movie - might almost, if it’s a full moon, and Halloween as well, make it worth seeing.
Malik (Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman) and his boyfriend Aaron (Air Cohen) move into a new home with Aaron’s daughter, Kayla (Jennifer Laporte). The small town's residents are welcoming enough but while his family is away, Malik discovers homophobic graffiti scrawled on their living room wall. Someone - or something - in this community is watching them.
A common criticism of LGBT+ characters in film is that they always have tragic endings. It’s not an unfounded complaint. Far too often, if you even have gay characters in your movie, they’re written in to support the leads before they die tragically. That’s not the case here. Malik is very much the central character in a horror film that addresses fears particularly relevant to people like him. We see glimpses of his past when he witnessed a boyfriend get lynched by homophobes, he’s terrified that his neighbors are merely pretending to be friendly (he’s got a reason to be frightened) and there are also real-world issues unique to same-sex couples discussed. The conclusion brings up ideas that are worth pausing to think about, such as how there’s always going to be another “other”, and there's also an exploration of what sort of trauma you would suffer from if you witnessed both passive-aggrssive and violent hate crimes. Now if only the movie were better.
The first issue with the film is Malik. This story is set in 1993 so certain behaviors/attitudes can be excused. Even so, the man’s got no sense of self-preservation. When you oversee your neighbors doing something creepy at night, if you’re going to take a picture of them, do it in a way that doesn’t draw attention to yourself. If you’re going to investigate the creepy old man, either come up with a good story in case you get caught snooping or make your presence subtle. I know the people in this horror movie don’t know they’re in a horror movie but the signs are there. Malik has seen the offensive graffiti, he’s also noticed these weird spirals here and there. I can understand him not wanting to cause panic by telling Aaron and Kayla but if you REALLY think they’re in danger, tell them
To properly explain why this is a bad movie, I have to give away the ending. Turns out that every ten years (give or take), the seemingly friendly neighbors sacrifice a virgin to some demon to remain young. Part of the ritual includes pouring animal blood all over her face, weird dancing, etc. They get away with it by framing the girl’s parents. In recent years, their coverup has them targetting gay parents, whom the media will see as “prone to mental instability”. Butcher the girl, make it look like the adults killed her, then each other. They will never run out of victims because there’s always going to be someone the police will say “Yeah, those kind of people will just do that”. Movie-wise, it’s a good idea. This story is about a gay man but when you think about it, he could’ve been in a mixed-race relationship, or an unwed mother, etc.
Once we know this, many earlier events seem clumsy or nonsensical. Malik stumbles upon the truth about the cult by venturing into the house of the lesbian couple killed in 1983. Lucky for him, they just happened to videotape everything that happened to them and left the videos in their home for him to discover a decade later. You’d think the cultists would’ve gone in and scrubbed the place clean so no one would find the evidence. When the cultists sacrifice their virgin, they open her up and clean out her guts like she's a watermelon. Even if the police are prejudiced, it’s hard to believe someone won't recognize this pattern, particularly since it happens every ten years. Maybe the cultists clean up their mess after? No, we know they don’t. They didn't even bother cleaning up the blood stains when the new family moved in! And what was the deal with the spiral-shaped break that formed on Malik and Aaron's windshield when they drove into town? Just the biggest coincidence of all time I guess.
You can forgive a lot in a horror film if it scares you. Even if you’ve been the victim of homophobia, there’s not a lot that’ll give you willies in Spiral. The performances are good but there are just too many elements of this story that disappoint, don't go far enough or are ultimately half-baked. It's a shame. Another couple of passes through the ringer and it might’ve worked. (May 3, 2021)

The Spaces in My Togetherness
By Kayla Cohen
Papercut by Sophie Levy
Kayla originally submitted this essay to the Berkeley Hillel Prize.
Last year, my friends and I invited one of our visiting lecturers, a Tibetan Buddhist monk, to a Tu B’Shvat seder in the Charedi-turned-hippie neighborhood of Nachlaot.
The event’s Facebook page asked guests to bring wine for the four prayers. We had stopped at Mahane Yehuda on the way, curving through the shuk’s wet alleyways, passing its porous walls and the fruit stands closed for the night, weaving in and out of a few liquor stores to find a 20-shekel bottle of red wine. People’s heads turned as Geshe Damchoe trailed behind us in his long crimson robe.
The seder was in a small synagogue. The room was filled twice over capacity. A buzzing murmur hovered across the room. Talk drowned the rabbi’s voice. No one was listening. Everyone -- but us five -- was drunk. Heavily drunk. And everyone -- but Geshe Damchoe -- was Jewish.
Damchoe sat quietly in his seat, reading the pamphlet explaining the different mixtures of wine that only he abstained from drinking that night. Then a niggun erupted. People drummed on the tables. They hollered and clapped. They beat their chests, climbed onto their chairs (or fell if they lost their balance). The five of us stared, rose, and followed.
Yin/yang is what Taoists see in the world: duality. Buddhists see karma governing an interdependent unity. In the little synagogue, amidst the roaring and table-banging, I laughed to myself: the Jews only know disorder.
(You can’t remember ever feeling that self-conscious about Jewish practice before. There was something about being in the company of a spectator, someone with limited exposure to Judaism (and no predisposition to defend it) that made celebrating the holiday fully and without questioning difficult for you. So you too adopted the role of observer. And for the first time, a fuller understanding of your own culture came not from engaging with it- but distancing yourself from it.
You were self-conscious, but not necessarily conscious of yourself. You were conscious of an “other.”)
That night blurred the defined space between “other” and “self.” It forced me to consider how much other people have affected how I see my self.
I hold others’ habits, tastes, and opinions. I hold behaviors that were modeled for me (your bad habit of cracking your neck, which started only because you thought your desk partner in 8th grade looked cool when she popped the capsules of her joints in cascading sequence). I hold feelings that I learned (your fear of plastic bottles from the progressive people you met in college, or revulsion from the thought of once mixing meat with milk -- embodied most gloriously in BBQ-chicken-cheese pizza -- before you lived in Israel and decided to keep kosher). I hold ideas that I did not create (like what your legs or chest should look like). I hold expressions that I can’t explain (the spontaneous tears induced by a friend’s; the contagious yawn induced by your neighbor).
I am not the only one engaged in this interexchange. Judaism has interacted with other peoples (and absorbed some of their cultural practices) for over two millennia. Jews were conquered by the Assyrians, Babylonians, Greeks, and Romans; by the Christians, Ottomans and British; before they were exiled, they lived in Egypt, Spain, Portugal, France, and Yemen; they founded communities across eastern and central Europe; in ancient Persia and modern Iran; in Iraq and Syria; in Albania, Morocco, South Africa, Mexico, Argentina; Ethiopia, Canada, the U.S., China, and India.
Because of their diasporic history, Jews also stand as a collection of different peoples, and their cultures, tastes, and practices. Some Jews are blonde. Some Jews have black skin. Jews hold citizenship to different countries. They speak different languages. Communities in the mizrach sing their prayers to Muslim chants. Many western synagogues adopted pews from churches. The ancient Beit Alpha synagogue by the Galilee holds pagan gods on its mosaic floors.
Judaism is imbued with so much otherness.
(You, too, are imbued with so much otherness.)
From where, then, does the Jewish people’s sense of self arise?
(From where, then, does your sense of self arise?)
Navigating the fluid interexchange between rigid conceptions of “self” and “other” is daunting. At the same time, the strain that this challenge has placed on how I interact with the world, and the fragmented feelings it has left me with, best honor my experience as a Jew, and on a more basic level, as a person.
Nearly a year after the Tu B’Shvat seder in Nachlaot, one of my teachers introduced me to a book called The Prophet by Khalil Gibran) He quoted a line from the book: “Let there be spaces in your togetherness.” (The idea cleaves to the walls of your brain.)
In context, the point of the quote was to remind people engaged in any relationship with another person of their own individuality. To separate the self from another, and sanctify the self-contained.
But maybe Gibran’s words can also be interpreted to question the self-sufficiency of the individual altogether. Maybe seeing spaces in one’s togetherness is the recognition of voids in a whole bigger than its acting parts; separation in what appears singular; other influences in the self; a network of people in one’s personhood.
Judaism hollows spaces -- spaces not just between Diaspora communities in different parts of the world, but within an individual’s consciousness.
These spaces are deeply embedded in my consciousness. I occupy different spaces: the space my body takes, the space between my body and another’s; and the emotional space that bleeds into another’s and sometimes encompasses the two. I jump between my selfhood and my otherness, “I” and (you). I occupy the space to both write about and to myself, to be and ultimately, to ask: “who are you, Kayla? How do you assert yourself? How do you assert your self?”

Spiral (2019)
Director: Kurtis David Harder
Stars: Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman, Ari Cohen, Jennifer Laporte...
Spiral is a 2019 Canadian horror movie about a gay couple, Malik and Aaron, who move to a small town with their daughter Kayla. Both men have interesting backstories to their life. Malik was a witness/victim of bashing by a group of delinquents when he was a teenager, which left him psychological consequences that he's still fighting with today, and Aaron was married to a woman and had a daughter with her before coming out of the closet and divorcing. The daughter Kayla now lives with the gay couple.
The horror story comes into play when strange things start happening after their arrival to the small town. First it's just the strange looks from other townsfolk, then someone breaks into their house, they start getting anonymous insults and threats and so on. But the pressure is only felt by Malik who is the only one suspecting that something is wrong about that town. His partner doesn't believe him and thinks he's being paranoid because of the incident from his past. However, as the movie progresses, it turns out Malik was actually right and the whole town is part of some weird-ass cult that hunts down minority families, be they of any background (sexual minority, ethnic minority etc.). They use black magic and subtle manipulation to usually drive one member of the family crazy, then kill the rest of them and blame it on the last surviving family member.
The movie was entertaining and the suspense was definitely there, and I also have to praise the original storyline, but there were also some things I didn't like that much. First is the political elements, which I found unnecessary because I think the point has already been made throughout the movie, and second is the supernatural elements, that sometimes seemed to me to be too quickly and superficially implemented.
Rating: 3/5

Thank you all for your patience as we worked through the applications, and for your patience in the upcoming days as we update the pages and get everything started. All of these applications were incredible, and we thoroughly enjoyed reading every single one. We’ll be reaching out to some of you who have applied for skeleton characters (which received multiple applications) with ideas we have for how to make the character you’ve created into an original one, so be sure to check the inbox of the account that you used to send your application for a message. 2. Meaning of name "Liam" and "Emma"
Liam:
Liam's name is the name of a boy of Irish origin meaning "resolute protection".
Liam originated as the nickname of Uilliam, the Irish variant of William. William is an English name from German origin brought to Ireland when the British fled England after the conquest of Norman.
The Irish began to use English names, including William, which led to the development of Uilliam and its short form, Liam.
Liam is the top US boy's name for 2018, joining the elite group of names to top the list. Liam started out as a short form of William but has long stood on his own and for several years has become one of the most popular baby names for boys.
Now it is the fastest-growing Irish name in the United States, first entering the Top 10 in 2012 and before climbing to No. 1, holding No. 2 for four consecutive years.
Emma:
Initially, a short form of the German name beginning with the ermen element meaning "whole" or "universal". It was introduced to England by Emma of Normandy, who was the wife of King Ethelred II (and by him the mother of Edward the Confession) and later King Canute.
After the Norman conquest, this name became popular in England. It was revived in the 18th century, perhaps in part because of a poem by Henry Prior Henry and Emma (1709). In the United States, it ranked third in 1880 (after Mary and Anna were omnipresent).
It declined steadily over the next century, beginning another rise in the 1980s and eventually becoming the most popular name for girls in 2008.
At this time it also experienced similar levels of popularity elsewhere, including the United Kingdom (where it began rising a decade earlier), Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Scandinavia, and the Netherlands.
