Notes: 1-13: Officially localized in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. 2-15: Originally already written in English as “Prayer Song to God”, but a different, localized title is given in-game. 2-36: A pun on “Partizanne” and “Forgettable”. 4-07: Italian for “The Madness of Love”. 4-27: Originally written as Grass Land: Stage Select. This was a printing error and is the wrong name. 5-16: [sic]. Track name was already written in English. 5-33, 5-34, 5-35: Pointedly written as if their respective characters are saying this. In extension, likely the same case with the rest of the jingles. 5-36: More accurately, “oracles”. However, this term is localized in the game’s text as “priestesses”. 6-11: “The Deus Ex Machina [she] Witnessed in [her] Childhood” 6-28: “Allies” and “Arise” have the same pronunciation in Japanese
Many tracks are re-used from older games. I tried to find the corresponding tracks and their official, or at least heavily accepted, English names. To the best of my knowledge, Blowout Blast and TKCDX do not have prior official tracklists, so any tracks from these games, and a few other cases, are directly translated.
Several tracks are already written in English (or in one case, Italian). With the exception of 2-15, I left them as-is.

Kelly, Gilbert, Scott, And De Keyrel Win Openers At Road Atlanta
Sean Dylan Kelly Takes Supersport Victory In Opening Round. ECSTAR Suzuki’s Sean Dylan Kelly drew first blood in the 2021 MotoAmerica Supersport Championship with his victory over rival Richie Escalante in the season-opener at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta, but in the other support classes it was mostly new blood taking advantage of the class champions exiting stage left. Supersport: Here We Go Again The tight battles at the front of the Supersport field that were an every-race occurrence last year between 2021 Champion Escalante and title runner-up Kelly picked up right where they left off in Supersport race one at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta. Kelly, who started from the pole aboard his M4 ECSTAR Suzuki, got the holeshot twice in the red-flagged race and held off all but one of Escalante’s attempts to take the lead. The HONOS Kawasaki rider, who ended up having to race his 2020 HONOS Kawasaki after crashing his 2021 green machine in final qualifying, couldn’t match Kelly’s pace. Kelly showed that 2021 may flip the script as his margin over Escalante at the checkers was more than 2.6 seconds. Cycle Gear Racing Yamaha’s Nolan Lamkin survived the attrition that led to the red flag and successfully reached the podium for his best-ever result in Supersport competition. “I’m really happy with how this weekend is going so far,” Kelly said. "This is exactly what I came for. I prepared a lot this off-season not only me, but also my team. We worked really hard together after a tough 2020 season. I learned a lot last year. I knew this year what I was coming into and I came prepared. I’m really happy with this. We’ve been working really hard since yesterday. We got the pole this morning. I really do think this race was if not the best, one of the best of my career just because of the pace I had. I’m sometimes not known for being able to go by myself and making fast laps with a really good pace like Richie. That was his strongest point last year. That’s exactly what I worked for this off-season. This is what we worked for all weekend, just to be able to pull really, really fast, consistent laps all week through the whole race, and that’s exactly what I did. I think three laps to go I set one of my fastest ever laps at this racetrack. Really proud of the work from my team. Really proud of believing in me and trying to make steps forward. It wasn’t only me; it was the package. I feel like the package we have this year is definitely better, and that’s the most important part. It’s a team effort at the end of the day. Really happy with the race. Definitely a hard battle at the beginning. I think we still have some work to do for tomorrow, some things that I saw compared to Richie (Escalante) and some things that I just felt throughout the race. Really happy with the feeling, happy with the start. This is only the start of the year, so looking forward to continuing and doing a good job.”
Stock 1000: Gilbert Gets It Done In Saturday’s Stock 1000 race, long-time literbike road racer Michael Gilbert got the victory aboard his brand-new Kawasaki ZX-10R, and he prevailed over hard-charging Jones Honda rider Ashton Yates, who was also aboard a brand-new bike - the Honda CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP. Both riders battled hard in the 13-lap event, as did third-place finisher Travis Wyman, who raced his trusty BMW S 1000 RR to a coveted spot on the podium. “It has been a long time since we got a win and honestly, there was a point in December or January where we weren't really sure we were going to be racing,” Gilbert said. “We got a few really key sponsors – Chuckwalla Valley Raceway back in Southern California being one of them, giving us an amazing place to train during the winter with JP43 Training. All the work that we do through the winter and then Octane Lenny came on board right at the last minute and really kind of sealed the deal to put us back in the MotoAmerica paddock and give us a strong package to work with. I’ve got to give it up to my guys, including Jason Aguilar. It’s a bummer to see him not on a Superbike. I know he was trying to put a program together, but I’m so, so happy that I snagged him to work for me this weekend. It’s been really fun just to have a good friend in the pits and someone who is really, really smart. Josh Merrill, as well. My dad back home, Graves Motorsports. Everyone that has just put an amazing motorcycle under me. To get back to it, it has been a long time. I could get used to this. I like hearing you say my name. So, we’re going to keep working hard and try and do it again tomorrow.”
Twins Cup: De Keyrel And Aprilia Win Coming into the Twins Cup season, the big question was, how would the brand-new Aprilia RS 660 fare in MotoAmerica’s rough-and-tumble “tuner class.” Very well, thank you very much. In Twins Cup race one, the new, twin-cylinder middleweight sportbike swept the podium with Robem Engineering’s Kaleb De Keyrel taking the victory over Righteous Racing’s Jody Barry – who has returned to the MotoAmerica Series after a few years away – and Hayden Schultz, who is one of De Keyrel’s teammates. “It was super fun,” De Keyrel said about the race. “Really good battle for quite a ways through. Overall, I can’t complain. Showing up here never riding the bike before and being right on pace pretty much right off the bat just really proved to myself that I did my homework in the off-season. I did a ton of training at the go-kart track and been riding motocross a ton, making sure that I’m physically fit and ready. I knew we were going to kind of be a little bit under-prepared as far as getting testing in on the bike because we didn’t have enough time. The Aprilia came out so late in the year that we didn’t have a whole lot of time. Really, we’re just lucky to be here. I wouldn’t be here without Matt (Spicer) and Gene (Burcham) and all of (Robem Engineering) putting in so many hours on the bike and working through everything, turning it into a race bike. Just to even be here was a huge feat in itself. I just wanted to leave here with solid points. Obviously, I was involved in the championship hunt last year and I ended up losing, so I’m hungry to prove that I can be a frontrunner and win races. That’s what we did today. Just did the best we could, like we always do. It was a lot of fun.”
SportbikeTrackGear.com Junior Cup: Scott Takes Debut Win The final race of the day on Saturday at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta was in SportbikeTrackGear.com Junior Cup, and a brand-new rider in MotoAmerica emerged with the victory in the red-flagged-and-restarted event. Tyler Scott raced his KTM to the win by just .271 of a second over Landers Racing Kawasaki’s Ben Gloddy. Veloce Racing Kawasaki’s David Kohlstaedt finished third, which was the first MotoAmerica podium of his career. “I got the start both times and I passed (polesitter) Gus (Rodio) on the first lap,” Scott said. “From there on I’m like, ‘I’m going to try to pull away.’ Every few laps coming out of turn seven, I would look back and there was always someone there. So, I knew I had to keep pushing and keep being consistent, otherwise they were going to overtake me. In the end, the last lap was a little stressful because I knew if Ben passed me anywhere past the halfway point in the lap, I was probably going to end up second. But I kept pushing and I got the win.” For the complete 2021 MotoAmerica Series schedule, click HERE To purchase tickets for any of the 2021 series round, click HERE For information on how to watch the 2021 MotoAmerica Series, click HERE For more info checkout our dedicated MotoAmerica Support Series News page motoamerica-support-series-latest-news/ Or visit the official MotoAmerica website motoamerica.com/

New livery of Team Pedercini Racing by Global Service Solutions for WSBK and WSSP 2019 unveiled
January 19th, 2019 - Team Pedercini Racing by Global Service Solutions introduced today, in front of a big and passionate crowd at the Motor Bike Expo, the new livery for season 2019 that will see the Italian outfit competing in the MOTUL FIM SuperBike World Championship and FIM Supersport World Championship.
Team Owner Lucio Pedercini, Team Manager Giordano Mozzi and the two riders Jordi Torres and Ayrton Badovini finally unveiled the 2019 program that will see Team Pedercini Racing by Global Service Solutions competing on the two most exciting motorbike championships in the world.
The first big news is the liveries that will colour the #81 Kawasaki ZX-10RR ridden by Torres and Badovini’s #86 Kawasaki ZX-6R. Colour blue is dominant and recalls the image of the title sponsor Global Service Solutions. This novelty for the first time ever changes the classic Kawasaki green colours and combines the black and white details on the fairing with the fluorescent red of the windshield and the graphic design of the racing numbers.
The second big news is the participation of the Italian team not only in the MOTUL FIM Superbike 2019 World Championship, series in which Team Pedercini Racing boasts the longest experience in the circus but also in the new FIM Supersport World Championship with the first Kawasaki powered by a 600cc engine. This is a double exciting challenge that mirrors well the new course of the Italian outfit for this season.
Lucio Pedercini – Team Owner:
“This is the start of a global change for our team. The arrival of Giordano Mozzi as Team Manager and the fundamental partnership with a big company like Global Service Solutions allow us to be positive about this coming season. This is going to be my twenty-eighth year in the World Championship and I am still feeling like an excited kid. This is undoubtedly a very important moment for our team.”
Giordano Mozzi – Team Manager:
“It is great to be here and a huge honour to for me to have taken on this role in the team of Lucio Pedercini, who is a long time friend and that I deeply appreciate on the human level. We put up an important and ambitious plan to make the team grow through strategic collaborations not only for this season but also on the medium-long period, as that with title sponsor Global Service Solutions. I would like to thank I.M.C. Trading, and particularly Mr. Antonello, who made this collaboration possible, and Studio Costa that has been following us for several years regarding legal and contract aspects. The season is coming fast, we bought a new workshop-truck and double hospitality, where, in the due respect of Team Pedercini Racing’s philosophy, I invite you all from now on. I believe we will have fun this year.”
Roberto Colombo – Global Service Solutions President:
“I was born in Monza, the land of motorsport, my father was a rider and passed this passion on to me. Lucio Pedercini and I had a great feeling since the beginning and we devised a three-years industrial project connected to the racing world, focusing on the technical aspect, as well as on promotion and marketing. I believe in it, the atmosphere is quite homely and we share every single step, getting things ready to make Philip Island the first tile of a great mosaic.”
Jordi Torres #81 – Rider:
“I cannot wait to get on the bike, to push it, feel it, live it and understand its critical points and work with the team to push it to the limits. I am quite positive, the base level is great, Team Pedercini Racing by Global Service Solutions made an incredible change this year and I invite you all to follow us throughout this exciting season.”
Ayrton Badovini #86 – Rider:
“The new livery is great, the partnership with Global Service Solutions is simply amazing. I am really excited and cannot wait to start. Two testing days are ahead: we will try to use them to learn as much as possible before heading to Australia where things are gonna get serious.”
The sporting programme of Team Pedercini Racing by Global Service Solutions will officially begin at the Philip Island (AUS) race track with the first round of the championship scheduled on February 22-24th, but before then, a double Superbike winter testing session will take place in Portimao (P) on January 27-28th and in Phillip Island on February 18-19th.

Beginner-Ish Sportbike Shootout
From the title alone, there’s a good chance new riders are intently combing through each word of this shootout. The beginner bike market is one the manufacturers value dearly, and for decades Kawasaki has owned this corner of the market with its EX/Ninja 250, and now the current Ninja 300. Honda finally followed suit in 2010, introducing the CBR250R as a 2011 model, and later, in 2014, the CBR300R as a 2015. Now the floodgates have opened, as both KTM and Yamaha have launched their own small-displacement sportbikes – the RC390 and YZF-R3, respectively – to try to grab a slice of that pie. If it weren’t for the crop of highly advanced literbikes coming out this year, a strong argument could be made for 2015 being the year of the entry-level sportbike. Meanwhile, more experienced riders probably don’t care. Those bikes are way too slow for me. I’d get bored with them in no time. This is likely the tune they’re singing. Here’s the thing: your humble MO staff has several decades of riding under their collective belt, on everything from 50cc scooters to fire-breathing superbikes. After hopping off each of these “beginner” bikes, whether on the street or the racetrack, we couldn’t stop smiling. All are genuine hoots to ride, no matter your skill level. Beginners will appreciate the gentle learning curve each provides, while more experienced pilots will get their jollies off wringing the necks out of each of ’em. As former MO staffer, and now MO columnist, Gabe Ets-Hokin describes in his Skidmarks column, it’s simply a blast to a slow bike fast. Alas, you didn’t come here to read about a four-way tie. You want to know how each bike stacks up. Are the Honda and Kawasaki, with their smaller engines, outgunned against the Yamaha and KTM? Will the Yamaha pose any threat to the Austrian RC390? Or is this all pointless because the KTM is going to rule the roost, anyway. Spoiler alert: The KTM is not our winner. 2013 Beginner Sportbike Shootout + Video For this test, we commuted with each bike, both around town and on the freeway, and also took them for a loop around some of our favorite mountain roads. Just for kicks, since these are sportbikes after all, we ventured out to Chuckwalla Valley Raceway to join our friends at Moto Forza for one of their low-key, well-run trackdays. Joining me are my esteemed MO colleagues John Burns and Tom Roderick, as well as honorary MOron, Thai Long Ly.
Not surprisingly, the KTM’s displacement advantage is clearly evident on the dyno. The Honda may have the least displacement, but its graph looks very smooth, a sign of good EFI programming and a modest state of tune. Most surprising is how evenly matched the Yamaha and Kawasaki are, the Ninja almost equalling the R3 in power, but the blue bike having a stronger midrange. It should be noted that all four bikes were fitted with the same Pirelli Diablo Rosso II tires, in stock sizes. The upgrade in rubber over the standard stuff on the Japanese bikes (the KTM already comes stock with the Pirellis) placed all four bikes on a level playing field and dramatically improved handling performance on the Honda, Kawasaki and Yamaha, inspiring confidence in the rider to lean farther and with more aggression. Had all bikes been tested with the stock rubber, the KTM’s deficits likely would have been overshadowed by the inferior tires of the others. Another interesting topic of note: All four motorcycles were built somewhere other than their home countries as a way to keep prices as low as possible. The Honda and Kawasaki are built in Thailand, the Yamaha in Indonesia, and the KTM in India. So What Does It Cost? Model Base MSRP Paint Options ABS Honda CBR300R $4,399 Black, Red, Pearl White/Red/Blue, Matte Black Metallic/Yellow $4,899 Kawasaki Ninja 300 $4,999 Lime Green, Pearl Stardust White $5,299 KTM RC390 $5,499 N/A Standard Yamaha YZF-R3 $4,990 Raven, Team Yamaha Blue/Matte Silver, Rapid Red N/A As usual, we turned to our trusty MO ScoreCard to convert our subjective thoughts into a numbered score, then added those to our objective metrics like price and wet weight. And now, the results…
The picture is relatively similar on the torque front, with the KTM outgunning the field. The dips and valleys of the KTM’s line point towards fueling that could use some tweaking. The Honda’s peak torque, meanwhile, is roughly the same as the KTM’s lowest point. Then there’s the Kawi and Yamaha; the former flowing up and down, while the latter’s midrange trumps that of its Japanese rivals.
Honda CBR300R 77.8%
$4,399 (ABS: $4,899)
It’s too bad somebody has to finish in last place, but at least this was the one prediction the four testers made before the test that actually panned out. The Honda’s 286cc Thumper is the smallest here, and its 26.3 hp and 17.5 lb-ft. of torque simply can’t keep up with the might of the others. We all knew the Honda would have a fight on its hands, but by virtue of its smallest price tag and 356-pound wet weight, the lightest here, it warranted inclusion. Sure enough, both on the street and track it was very easy to flick from side to side, despite a 25.0º rake, the second-laziest behind the 27.0º Kawasaki. Still, it struggled to keep pace with the others. Though to dwell on the Honda’s performance shortcomings would be doing the bike an incredible disservice. At 30.7 inches, its seat height is tied with the Yamaha’s for the lowest here. Combine that with well-tuned EFI, comfortable ergos and a clutch lever that can almost be pulled with one finger, and the CBR300R is perhaps the ideal bike to learn on. It doesn’t hurt that it glides from one gear to the next and that I believe its brakes are the best in the bunch.
The lack of power is simply too much for the Honda to overcome on the track. If it had more oomph, its great brakes and lightest curb weight could be better exploited. “Any absolute beginner should be all over this bike,” chimes Thai. “The fact that it is comfortable, has excellent fuel economy and makes for a wonderful commuter means that combined with its ABS and low seat height, any neophyte should feel supremely confident petting such a toothless animal.” Its soft suspension means you’ll hardly feel the crappy city streets you’ll be buzzing through on your way to class. Speaking of buzz, somehow Honda found a way to make sure you don’t feel any of them coming from the Single – even while turning 8500 rpm at 80 mph on the freeway. It’s quite remarkable and in stark contrast to the similarly-cylindered KTM. From an ergo perspective, even Chief Complainer Roderick had nice things to say. “The CBR is light and small but remains comfortable for a tester of my 5-foot 11-inch, 180-pound dimensions. Riding the CBR is more comfortable than riding the KTM.”
On the streets, the CBR is friendly, agreeable, and a fantastic pick for the absolute rookie looking to dip their toes in the sportbike market. So if it’s cheap, economical and noob-friendly motorcycling you’re going for, the Honda CBR300R is it. Otherwise, the little CBR is a little bland. Not that that’s a bad thing, says Thai. “What’s wrong with a bike that’s as hardcore as an open air Yanni concert on a rainy night? Nothing. Yanni sells millions of albums just like Honda will sell boatloads of CBR300R’s.” + Highs Best bike for the true beginner looking for economical transportation. Best price. Highly maneuverable. – Sighs Least power. Outgunned in this company Overshadowed by the others.
KTM RC390 81.8%
$5,499
Thai, like the rest of us, had high hopes for the RC390 before this test started. “This is the bike that I figured would be the king of the castle, even before inserting the key. With all the hype surrounding the little thumper my expectational cup ran full and the numbers on paper seemed to support this foregone conclusion.” When it came time to perform, however, the hyped-up athlete delivered just a mediocre performance. Needless to say we had high expectations for the KTM, and for it to finish just slightly ahead of the Honda might seem puzzling at first, but allow us to explain. Let’s start with the good. With 39.7 hp and 24.6 lb-ft., the 373cc Thumper is class of the field. It’s also second lightest, behind the Honda, at 364 lbs. This combination means the KTM leaves the others behind once you twist the throttle. The Single’s torque easily pulls you out of most situations on the street and feels lively when you’re accelerating through the twisties. On track, the top-end advantage means the others couldn’t keep up – at least in a straight line.
As the most track-focused of the four, the KTM RC390 sports the most aggressive geometry numbers. This is clear in how eager the RC likes to flick from side to side. Wide, relatively low bars and a willing chassis make the RC390 very anxious to dive into turns. The RC390 sports a 23.5º rake, the sharpest here, and a 52.8-inch wheelbase, besting the Honda and Yamaha by 1.5 inches, and the Kawi by 2.5 inches. Unfortunately, despite impressive geometry figures, the RC is let down by sub-par suspension bits, especially the shock, which sits precariously close to the hot exhaust. Our resident sleuth, Sherlock Burns, theorizes the heat may compromise the shock’s oil. As he explains: “Maybe it’s only a rear shock away from being much better, but you’ll need to replace the exhaust too because there’s not even enough room for a heat shield between the two. You can feel how hot the shock gets compared to the other bikes’. I was closing up on yous two on it at Chuckwalla at one point, when I hit that bump at the exit of Turn 1 (which I didn’t really know was there on the other bikes) and got sideways two laps in a row because of a complete lack of rebound damping and scared the pee out of myself. With 40 hp compared to 35 for the Twins and less weight, it should lap quite a bit faster. It really doesn’t.”
The distinctly orange KTM trellis frame houses, among other things, a preload adjustable WP shock. Note its close proximity to the exhaust hump in black directly in front. We theorize exhaust heat could be affecting the shock’s damping abilities, as its lack of rebound damping saps confidence to push its limits. Kudos to KTM, though, for equipping the RC with Pirelli Diablo Rosso II tires, stock. There’s another demerit point in the braking department, too. “Surprisingly, the KTM’s brakes were my least favorite of this group,” says Roderick. The ByBre brakes may have been designed by Brembo, but the cheaper alternative was by far the worst in the test, getting demolished on the ScoreCard. They lacked both feel and stopping power – a bad combination. Ironically, the RC is the only one of the group that comes standard with ABS. Tom continues, “None of these bikes have top-shelf suspension, but we struggled getting the KTM to hook up at the track wearing the same tires as the other bikes.” The double whammy of bad brakes and weak suspension killed our confidence when trying to hustle the KTM around Chuckwalla. Burns wasn’t the only one sliding both ends in the corners, and while the engine gives a valiant effort, its supporting cast just isn’t up for the task. What happens when you put her on the road, away from the track? “She works well,” says Thai. “Like a pair of Chuck Taylors. Competent and serviceable. Though I’m not sure I’m willing to make such a race-inspired commitment when there are more comfortable options available when stepping away from the track environment.”
With its braking components designed by Brembo, including radial-mount caliper, steel-braided lines and standard ABS, one would think the RC would have stellar stopping power. Unfortunately, the KTM’s brakes are disappointing. At calmer street speeds, the KTM’s shortcomings aren’t as pronounced and are more manageable. When not flogging it through the canyons, it routinely gets over 50 mpg, our best being 56.3 mpg, but once you start playing in the high rev range, fuel goes fast. Our worst figure was 44 mpg. To make matters worse, the KTM only holds 2.6 gallons of gas, by far the least here. KTM’s not trying to hide the RC390’s intentions as a track-focused machine. “The racy nature of the KTM is apropos as it is the only bike here with its own racing series in America,” Tom notes. As part of the RC390 Cup series, one of the few permitted modifications is fully adjustable suspension. At the Corsa Moto Classica, Tom was speaking with Jim Doyle, team owner of G-Baby Racing, an all-girl amateur team who won the 2014 CMRA 2nd F2 Endurance Championship, who was in attendance racing the KTM RC390. They too struggled with rear grip and suspension problems, finding a solution by installing a JRi shock that they report has greatly increased rear suspension performance. According to Doyle, the JRi shock is a much smaller diameter than the stock shock, which gives it a bit of extra breathing/cooling room next to the exhaust. It also has a remote reservoir, which would further cool the shock and its oil.
At slower street speeds, our shock complaints aren’t as big a concern, though we’d still like more bite from the brakes. Roads like this are where the KTM thrives. For freeway slogging, best to go with one of the other three. Alas, this is a street test primarily, and as such, the KTM is a hard sell. It costs the most of the four, isn’t as comfy for the long haul, and puts out considerable vibes at freeway speeds compared to the others. But if your goal is to simply play at the track or the canyons, this is the one to get. With a sorted suspension and a toothier set of brake pads, the RC390 would be transformed. + Highs Most power and torque is fun to play with. Agile chassis likes to flick. Standard ABS – Sighs Cheap shock a real setback. Brakes need some help. Vibey on the freeway.
Yamaha YZF-R3 84.0%
$4,990
Yamaha might have waited a while to enter the beginner bike market in the U.S., but now that we’ve ridden the R3 we can say it was well worth the wait. Getting acclimated to the little Yamaha took no time at all.
Burns, declaring his age right there on his Arai (ok, not really), felt confident enough to whip the R3 around Chuckwalla largely due to the capable chassis and suspension. The Pirelli tires helped a lot, too. With the stock Michelin Pilot Street rubber, the rear tends to chatter rather easily at the track. Second only in displacement to the KTM, the Yamaha’s 321cc Twin pumps out 35 hp, virtually equal to the smaller Kawasaki. Torque is also marginally higher than the Kawi’s, 18.9 lb-ft. vs. 17.6 lb-ft., however the R3 carries more than 10 lbs less weight (370 lbs vs. the Ninja’s 381 lbs) and has a broader spread of torque throughout the rev range, leaving Tom to conclude, “The R3’s engine is torquier than the Kawasaki’s, making around-town operation easier.” Despite the apparent advantage the R3 engine has on the street over the Kawi, on track it was hardly noticeable. The Yamaha fades as the revs climb, whereas the inverse is true for the Ninja. “The larger engine and additional power of the Yamaha gives the R3 a minor power advantage, but not enough for me to get past Troy down the front straight at Chuckwalla,” Tom noted. “The R3 would inch closer, but to get past him would have taken a straightaway with twice the distance.”
An analog tachometer dominates the view from the R3’s gauge cluster, its needle easy to read even in glaring sunlight. We liked that Yamaha also included a gear position indicator on its entry-level sportbike; the costlier KTM was the only bike also equipped. It’s a game of splitting hairs in the handling department, as three of the four testers judged the R3 and Ninja dead even. Burns was the only defector, rating the R3 considerably lower, due to suspension that felt soft and under-damped and didn’t jibe with him. Overall though, for having beginner-bike suspension pieces, the R3 is well damped for track duty while still providing a comfortable ride on the freeway and riding over neglected downtown roads. Ergonomically, our testers were torn between the Kawi and Yamaha. The R3 provides a position ever-so-slightly less committed than the Ninja, which was preferred by both myself and Thai, with a seat that offers more support. At nearly 6-feet, Tom says, “The Ninja has the best seating position, ergonomics and legroom, but the Yamaha comes in a close second. The R3 also has better seat material that’s supportive as well as comforting.”
The Yamaha’s stopping power is decent, though feel could be a little better. The R3 stands out in this grouping because it’s the only one not offered with ABS, even as an option. Brakes are average, but more than good enough for the job. Unfortunately ABS isn’t available, not even as an option, and is a blemish for the R3, especially considering it’s optional on the Kawi and Honda and standard for the KTM. ABS aside, the R3 rated high amongst us. It’s gauge cluster looks the most modern, is easily readable, and even comes with a gear-position indicator. The KTM has one, too, but it’s harder to read. Even after a day of flogging in the canyons, we still managed 52 mpg from the R3. An average of 56 mpg was more common under normal riding. In the end, the Yamaha and Kawasaki are separated by one percentage point on the ScoreCard. Personally, the Yamaha came out on top in my scoring, but the other three disagree. And even though Tom scored the Ninja slightly higher, it’s not the bike he’d put in his garage.
The R3’s street-oriented engine characteristics mean a broad spread of power is available at the engine speeds you’re more likely to use on the street. It also has a well padded seat, and is more than capable of handling a curvy mountain road. With a score this tight, it all comes down to looks. Says Tom, “Not that I dislike the Ninja’s styling, but I’m more attracted to the looks of the R3. Being that most areas of comparison between the R3 and Ninja are so close, I’d probably buy the Yamaha because of this.” Alas, the Yamaha is a very close second favorite in this test. Why second? “Because, Ninja,” quips Thai. + Highs Great engine for the street. Comfortable around town or at the track. Not a bike you’ll grow out of quickly. – Sighs Mediocre brakes No ABS Engine barely more powerful than older, smaller Ninja.
Kawasaki Ninja 300 85.0%
$4,999 (ABS: $5,299)
Being the oldest bike here, we just assumed the others (save the Honda) would outgun it by virtue of having all this time to study what Kawasaki was doing and making something better. But, by the faintest of exhaust fumes Kawasaki has managed to hold onto the beginner- bike crown. If only just. The formula for the OG, Kawasaki Ninja 300, to come out on top in this test is quite simple, at least according to Thai. “How does old beat new? Can Rossi really take Marquez? Can Tom Brady outgun Russell Wilson? How does Gandhi dominate Justin Bieber? By simply being better. Then and now.”
The Kawasaki Ninja 300 is an example of age and experience trumping youth and exuberance. If only just. The Kawasaki, at 381 lbs, is the heaviest, but nobody complained about the bike’s girth in relation to the others, both on track and on the street. It’s impressive that, with only 296cc, the Ninjette puts out almost identical power figures to the Yamaha. However, “You really have to keep the Ninja’s parallel-Twin on the boil to get maximum performance,” says Tom. “On the track it’s a blast to ride, on the street the Yamaha’s Twin is torquier and more user-friendly.” Still, this didn’t deter our testers from singing the Kawasaki’s praises. The Ninja won eight categories on the ScoreCard, though admittedly with narrow margins over the Yamaha. Everyone loved how easy it was to ride, and ride quickly; its chassis and suspension more composed than any of us were expecting. The Ninjette punched above its weight, able to stick with the Yamaha on track while keeping the KTM honest. On the roads, the same lovable characteristics we liked on track carried over. The suspension is geared toward the soft side, but not overly so. The relative lack of torque means you need to rev it to really get a move on, but the gears click from one to the next easily. Better still, says Tom, “The Kawasaki is the only one that comes with a slipper clutch, a truly cool technology – especially for a 300 – that even the racier KTM does not offer.” We got a worst mpg rating of 54.3, with 60 being more common during average riding.
In contrast to the Yamaha, the Kawasaki comes alive once the revs pick up. Some more bottom end torque would be nice, but it still performed well enough for the majority of our testers to choose it as their favorite of the four. Ultimately, the Ninja 300 just works so damn well. Well enough to win our 2015 Entry-level Sportbike Shootout. “I’d forgotten how good the Ninja is since the last time I rode one when it was new,” Burns notes. “For being a ‘beginner bike’, it’s one of the best-polished, most dialed-in production bikes I’ve ridden. Nothing about it stands out, including its 35 hp, but all its systems seem perfectly integrated and balanced. Fuelling is excellent, both on and when you roll off the throttle. It’s smooth enough and its suspension is so nicely damped you can feel the weight transfer back and forth from front tire to rear in Chuckwalla’s corners, which lets you ride right on the edge of the tires, and its steering is the most accurate as a result of everything else. At first, the potty chair ergos feel like they’re not going to work at all on the track, but you adjust and within a lap it’s excellent with the grips right next to your ears. Big fun till some twat roars past on a Ducati, and then it’s still fun as you close back up on them mid-corner…” + Highs Punches well above its weight. Only one with slipper clutch. Comfy ergos, even for taller folks. – Sighs A little more torque wouldn’t hurt. USMC combat motorcycles
By Keith Dowdle
I’ve worked in the motorcycle industry for most of my life, but I enrolled in the United States Marine Corps when I was 24. I needed a short break to give the battered motorcycle dealer I worked at a chance to recover from the economic downturn in 1986, and I’ve always wanted to be a marine, so I raised my right hand and signed up. Shortly after graduating from bootcamp and elementary schools, I served in the Philippines with an infantry unit known as the Grunts in the Marine Corps, and I loved it. Every day was a new adventure and I really enjoyed being a grunt. Swinging through the jungle with my M16 – all these fun things.
The author and his Kawasaki KLX250 in Saudi Arabia, around 1990.
But one afternoon my commander, the CO, called me into his office and told me I would be on the next plane back to Camp Pendleton and report to First Marine Division Combat Motorcycles. It turned out that an old high school friend of mine was made a Marine Corps officer several years before I joined. He was now a captain and worked for the CO of the First Marine Division Schools seeking a qualified Marine with experience with off-road motorcycles to take the Combat Motorcycle Operators Course. My name was at the top of their list of candidates, and I was about to be given a whole new job teaching Marines how to operate a motorcycle for tactical reconnaissance. For the next two years, I rode motorcycles every day, taught marines how to ride dirt bikes, and had the absolute best job imaginable. My CO gave me autonomy and authority, and I pretty much ran my own program.
All the fun and games ended on August 1, 1990 when Iraq invaded Kuwait. I have been ordered to report to duty under the Commanding General (CG) of the First Marine Division in Saudi Arabia. I got there in mid-August and waited with a few thousand other Marines at the dock of a large shipping port for the Maritime Prepositioning Ships (MPS) to arrive. These MPS ships are positioned around the world and are equipped with everything the Marine Corps needs to get into combat quickly. When the ships arrived, to my surprise, I actually had a fleet of combat motorcycles available. The bikes we used at the time were Kawasaki KLR250s that were slightly modified for military use, basically just a green paint job, some extra impact protection and blackout lights for night use. After the bikes left the ship, I was told to set up a course and expect the first group of trainees in a few days.
Remember, we’re in the middle of the Arabian Desert – not exactly the best place to start teaching someone to ride a motorcycle. The sand there was deep and difficult, and to top it all off, the CG wanted these Marines to be trained in three days instead of three weeks, which was the length of the course at Camp Pendleton. For the next four months, I taught U.S. Marines, British Royal Marines, Navy Seals, Army Rangers, and some undisclosed people how to ride a motorcycle in the open desert. The directions were simple: get in, start it up and follow me. If you crash, get back in and catch up. Fortunately, during the entire time I only had three trainees with injuries that were so severe that they needed a paramedic. I call that damn good considering the circumstances.
January came and the war had started. I was still reporting to the CG, but now the mission had changed from training to surgery. Fifteen Marines from across the corps, all of whom were already qualified to operate combat motorcycles, were assigned to my protégé. I formed teams of two based on their driving skills and gave them the missions I believed they could do. I wanted the best riders with me and we took on the toughest missions simply because we can stay on bikes in deep sand. Our missions varied from day to day depending on what the CG required. Some days we acted as snipers putting down harassing fire (basically we were trying to get the Iraqis to shoot back at us so we could identify their exact location), some days we did scouting missions to locate enemy units and report their location or call for fire, and at other times we carried out fragment orders and map overlays to various commanders on the front lines of battle.
Not quite the I-405 freeway in LA
The scariest missions were when we were sent up to get intelligence reports from our Force Recon guys. You’ve probably never heard of Force Recon, but they’re the baddest of the baddies. Guys trained as both Navy Seals and Army Rangers (and probably lots of other things we shouldn’t know about). These guys were dressed like locals (think Taliban) – beards and everything – and they were as far away as possible. They were hard to find and once we found them we weren’t always sure if they were friendly as they looked so much like the locals. Tiptoe in and if they haven’t started shooting they are probably the guys we’re looking for, that was our strategy.
The land war in the Gulf lasted exactly a hundred hours, and some people belittle our service in this war because of it, but we were surrounded by death and destruction and feared for our lives every day. I’m glad it was short and even happier that I never saw a dead American. There were deaths, but nobody in my unit died, and if we’re not heroes because of that, that’s fine with me. Combat Motorcycles ultimately led to a fantastic career in the motorcycle industry for me, and I know the other Marines I have served with achieved great things in their lives too. Some of us plan to ride together again, hopefully this time without anyone shooting at us. CN

Jonathan Rea tops final day of pre-season testing at Portimao
WorldSBK and WorldSSP riders completed the final day of testing around Autodromo do Algarve in Portimao, which hosted from 27th-28th January the final two-day European pre-season test before the 2019 MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship season will kick off in Australia next month.
A stronger wind blew at the Portuguese rollercoaster race track, but riders didn’t back down and aware of the importance of every single hour of testing available, they took to the track early in the morning to make their final arrangements ahead of the WorldSBK season opener. Both the days saw stiff competition with many riders and four different manufacturer bikes contending the top spot till the very last minute of on-track activity, showing off similar paces.
But in the end, it was reigning World Champion Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing WorldSBK Team) who came out on top at the end of the two days, despite suffering a small crash on the final minutes of on-track activity. Working on finding a good base setup for his Kawasaki ZX-10RR, the Northern Irishman was happy with the improvement made with his crew during the off-season, and he now looks forward to Australia to see where they really stand. On the other side of the garage, Leon Haslam was more than pleased in ending the European Winter test in fourth position. Returning to the WorldSBK championship after four years, the British rider was able to find back his confidence with the WorldSBK machine over the four days of testing at Jerez and Portimao.
Bringing on the fight to Rea and the green machines, Alex Lowes (Pata Yamaha WorldSBK Team) continued with his stunning pace also on Day Two at Portimao, as he closed in second position 0.959 s behind Rea. Together with his teammate Michael van der Mark, who finished fifth, the Pata Yamaha WorldSBK Team riders successfully completed their program, as they worked on confirming the new parts tested during the days before.
In the Aruba.it Racing – Ducati garage Chaz Davies and Alvaro Bautista were able to make consistent progress working on the base setup of the all-new Ducati Panigale V4 R. Testing different tyres and many aspects of his new bike, Alvaro Bautista set an outstanding fastest lap time of 1’41.934, taking the third spot of the timesheets, on a race track with such unique features, that he barely knows. Team-mate Chaz Davies who was still struggling with back pain put in 42 laps on the V4 R today and finished a tough test in 11th position.
But it wasn’t just the green, blue and red machines to impress at Portimao. BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team rider Tom Sykes put in a sensational lap today, conquering the sixth spot in 1’42.246.
The British rider was surprised by how close they were, considering they are still in their development phase. Also, Markus Reiterberger, who worked on the geometry of the bike and on testing different tyres, completed a positive test finishing tenth overall. After their sixth day on track with the new BMW S1000RR, which colours were revealed today live on their social media channels, the BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team can now head to Australia with a lot of confidence after their positive work.
Continuing to adapt to the WorldSBK bike, 2018 WorldSSP World Champion Sandro Cortese (GRT Yamaha WorldSBK) set the seventh fastest lap time, while teammate Marco Melandri closed eighth overall.
Toprak Razgatlioglu (Turkish Puccetti Racing) had a strong pace on both days as he closed in ninth position. The Turkish rider worked on improving his feeling on board the Kawasaki ZX-10RR that will only be updated into the 2019 version at Phillip Island. Working also alongside a new crew chief, it was a positive two-day test for the young rider and his team.
It was a tally two-day test for Independent team riders Michael Rinaldi (BARNI Racing Team) and Eugene Laverty (Team Goeleven), both working on the development of their Ducati Panigale V4 R. The Italian rider closed in twelfth position, while Laverty, who still have a lot of work to do with his new team, finished thirteenth.
Developing the new Honda CBR1000RR, 2019 WorldSBK rookie Alessandro Delbianco finished fourteenth after two days trying to get acquainted with the WorldSBK machine.
Jules Cluzel (GMT94 Yamaha) set the fastest lap time among the WorldSSP riders who were also out testing in Portugal. The Frenchman closed 0.573 secs ahead of the MV Agusta F3 675 of Italian rider Raffaele De Rosa (MV AGUSTA Reparto Corse) and 0.879 ahead of Frenchman Lucas Mahias (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing).

New Post has been published on http://superbike-news.co.uk/wordpress/ben-wilson-returns-to-racing-with-gearlink-kawasaki-in-2019/
Ben Wilson returns to racing with Gearlink Kawasaki in 2019
After recovering from injuries sustained in a crash at the 2016 Northwest 200, Ben Wilson will make a much anticipated return to the Dickies British Supersport Championship for the 2019 season.
It has been a long and arduous recovery process for Wilson, who will once again compete at the highest level thanks to sheer determination and perseverance. The Englishman can now be confident that he will enter the 2019 season totally primed to rub elbows at the front of the 600cc class once again.
Wilson enjoys a rich history in the 600cc Supersport class, only narrowly missing out on the Championship title by 1 point in 2011 and taking race wins, plus podiums across a number of seasons throughout his career.
2019 will be a promising campaign for both rider and team as they continue to chase the Championship win that has eluded them to this point.
Ben Wilson is counting down the days until he can eagerly work towards achieving his dream, saying, “After the longest break I’ve ever had from motorcycle racing, it’s great to be returning and riding a Kawasaki. I’ve waited until now to make a comeback because my leg has not been ready for me to run at the sharp end, but I know with a good testing program over the winter months I will be right where I need to be. I can’t wait to get out on the new Gearlink Kawasaki and get the 2019 campaign under way. Big thanks to Gearlink Kawasaki and Kawasaki UK for standing by me and giving me this fantastic opportunity.”
Kawasaki Motors UK Senior Racing Coordinator, Ross Burridge is pleased with Wilson’s decision to pick up where he left off, saying, “I am so happy to see Ben back racing for 2019! Ben has been a big part of the Team Green family for many years, and I for one have always wanted to witness him take the Supersport title. His injury was horrendous and would see most people not come back to racing, but Ben has shown amazing willpower over the past couple of years to get back to where he is now. He’s been on the Gearlink Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R already and is showing good pace, so I can’t wait to see him out on track at round 1 next year.”

TurfMutt Offers Dog-Friendly Backyard Landscaping Tips National Dog Day is Saturday, Aug. 26. In honor of this holiday, Lucky the TurfMutt, a rescue dog himself and the official spokesdog of the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute environmental education program, encourages pet parents to reevaluate their family yard to ensure it’s appropriate for their furry friends. Here are TurfMutt’s top five tips:
Consider your dog’s needs in terms of water (including a water fountain or splash pool?), a perimeter running path or a place to dig, such as a sand pit. Jot down everything your dog needs from your family yard, then you map out your landscaping accordingly.
Keep your pet safe with a secure fence.
Include turfgrass that offers your pet a soft, cool spot to lie down, even during the hottest conditions. It also creates a comfortable backyard playground, and provides a place to take care of business – just be sure to clean up regularly.
Select the right balance of grass, flower plants, trees and shrubs for beauty but also to help support biodiversity. Select appropriate landscaping for the areas you’ve identified in your yard. Around walking paths, for instance, you’ll want to include sturdy, yet soft foliage that can stand up to puppy and people traffic without scratching. Use elevated boxes and patio planters for more delicate flowering plants.
Avoid toxic plants. Some plants and shrubs are poisonous to dogs. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has a list of toxic plants that you should refer to when shopping for your family yard.

Judge Overturns Montgomery County, Maryland, Pesticide Ban On Thursday, Aug. 3, in Montgomery County, Maryland, Circuit Judge Terrence McGann ruled in favor of the professional landscape community and struck down the countywide ban of commercial pesticide application on public and private lawns, gardens, and ornamental sites, reports Paul Mendelsohn of the National Association of Landscape Professionals.
In October 2015 the Montgomery County Council voted 6-3 to restrict the use of pesticides on both county-owned and private property. In addition to eliminating the use of pesticides on private lawns beginning on January 1, 2018, the bill limited pesticide use on public and private playgrounds, mulched recreation areas and children’s facilities such as child care centers. The ban on county-owned property and parks was supposed to have gone into effect on July 1.
In a 14-page opinion explaining his ruling, McGann found that “by generally banning the use of registered pesticides, the Ordinance prohibits and frustrates activity that is intended to be permitted by state law, which conflicts with, and is thus, preempted by state law.”
Ewing Hires Names Jeff Lanahan as Executive Vice President Ewing Irrigation & Landscape Supply announced Jeff Lanahan as the executive vice president of business development. In this new role, Lanahan will participate in strategy development and execution for the company’s continued growth and expansion. Lanahan previously served as COO at Pioneer Sand Company.
