I personally head-canon Azula and Katara being roughly equal in terms of raw power and bending aptitude after the war and comics. So any explosive fights between them have the potential to destroy the world. They love each of course, but they also love getting a rise out of the other. When Azula and Katara fight, the world risks ending in drowning or wildfire.

So whenever things get out of hand, Ty Lee just needs to chi block them. Or whenever she needs peace and quiet. It is a heavy burden to keep the most powerful (respectively) Fire and Water benders in the straight and narrow. But it is a burden someone must bare, and one Ty Lee bares most enthusiastically.

This dynamic allows for an equality between the Fire/Water/Chi spouses. Except in the bed chamber, where Ty Lee rules supreme.

What do you think of this head-cannon?

I find this actually quite hilarious. Azula threatens to burn their bed? Katara threatens to drown Azula in her blood? Nuh-uh bad benders get put in flesh prison.

Honestly poor Ty Lee, if she wasn't a chi-blocker she wouldn't have survived 30 seconds. Also with how much Azula and Katara get on her nerves (she loves them regardless), she deserves a little control in the bed.

It literally caught me!! Well... I got caught up, but let's not talk about details.

So what if it's in like a modern AU and Azula and Ty Lee don't meet Katara until they're in college. Azula isn't dependent on Ozai at this point, I haven't figured out specifics. She might still be in contact with him, she might have cut off contact. She's definitely in therapy.

Ty Lee and Azula have known each other since they were kids. By the time the story starts, she feels safe enough around Azula (and in general) to actually show her intelligence.

Mai and Zuko are at different colleges, but the four of them spend at least a few weeks together every summer.

Katara has less drama in her backstory. She's studying politics, law, and/or psychology. Her mom died when she was young (or you could have it be Kya didn't die? There's really no reason she has to die in most modern AUs). Anyway. Most of her friends don't go to the same college as her. She meets up with them on every break, though. I feel like there is much more to say, but there's really a lot of flexibility on the specifics.

Azula and Katara go to the same school, Ty either goes to the same school or one fairly close by. I'm thinking same school. Azula and Ty Lee share some classes, Ty Lee and Katara share some classes, and Katara and Azula share some classes. There's probably one or two classes all three of them are in.

Ty Lee and Azula are probably already dating. Then Azula notices the smart, beautiful girl who shares 2-3 of her classes. When she talks to Ty Lee about it, it turns out Ty Lee has noticed her too.

Azula probably wouldn't have talked to Ty Lee about it, but Ty invited Katara to eat lunch with them one day and Azula, for all her skill in debate and manipulation, was too flustered to talk much. They started eating lunch with Katara more and more frequently, and Azula began to come out of her shell. She and Katara are both in debate club, and it isn't long before the two of them get into friendly arguments almost every day.

Ty Lee and Azula are already friends/dating. Katara and Ty Lee become great friends pretty quickly. Azula and Katara need a little more time to grow close, but they get really close.

This AU doesn't necessarily have any angst or drama, except a bit from nerves and poor communication in the early stages of their relationship. There's also a lot of flexibility with the specifics. If anyone wants to write this, please tag me I want to read it.

I might add more ideas later.
