Takashi Shiina's new work is unexpectedly a work by Rumiko Takahashi (lol)!

It all started a bit before “Yashahime” started being broadcasted. I was working on finishing Zettai Karen Children, and it went like “There’s no manga version? If no one is going to do it, I will after "Zettai Karen Children”, “Joking again lol”. Finally, I was really given permission to do it. In other words, I was the person who came up with the idea of the project, but in the end I made sure of it many times with the editor in charge like “Well then, I’m going to take this to Takahashi-sensei and Sunrise. "Is it ok? I-is it really ok to talk to them about it?”. Something like “Oh.. oh…? Well… more or less, we have nothing to lose…?”.

Takahashi-sensei's first reaction was, "Shiina-san? Are you serious?" (laughs). When I started Zettai Karen Children, Rumiko Takahashi consulted with me about this and that, and she was very kind to me. So the manga is a way of repaying the favor . . . . and a lie, I just wanted to do it. I'm sorry. Because it's a spin-off of "InuYasha," right?　What kind of manga artist wouldn't want to draw it? (lol)

However, if I were to actually do it, "Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon" would be based on "InuYasha", so first of all, Takahashi-sensei would have to give her blessing. And since it is an original work by Sunrise, it is also a world created by series composition writer Katsuyuki Sumisawa under the direction of director Teruo Sato, with various restrictions, so they too have their own ideas and concerns about the work. I wondered if I would be able to bring something new to it, something that would make sense for me as an artist to be involved in it. Even if I could, I wondered how far I would be allowed to go by the rights holders. However, my fears were unfounded, and when I told them about the arrangement I had come up with, they readily agreed to allow me to proceed with the work as is, almost as freely as if it were Shiina's. How did the resulting work turn out?

I can only leave it up to the readers to decide what they think of the resulting work, and I can only hope that the people involved with "InuYasha" and "Yashahime" and the fans will like it. I'm doing my best, and I think it's not bad so far��but…I've made a mistake before…no, no, no…well, I guess it's no use now that I've come this far (that happens every time before a new series is published).

Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon Announcement

Viz Media has releases a trailer for Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon, an Inuyasha sequel from Sunrise. Inuyasha creator Rumiko Takahashi designed the characters. Yoshihito Hishinuma is responsible for animation character design. Teruo Sato is directing and Katsuyuki Sumisawa is writing the screenplay. Kaoru Wada is providing the music.

Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon will feature a lot more time jumping between Feudal and present-day Japan. Feudal half-demon twins Towa and Setsuna are separated during a forest fire and Towa wanders into a tunnel that sends her to present-day Japan. She is found and raised by Kagome’s brother Sota and his family. When the tunnel reopens ten years later Towa travels back in time to be reunited with her sister. However, Setsuna, now a Damon Slayer working for Kohaku, has no memories of her sister. The twins are joined by Moroha, Inuyasha and Kagome’s daughter, as they travel between the eras to discover their missing past.

There are images of extraordinary beauty and sinister power in Belladonna of Sadness, but they are also mixed with Pop Art clichés; psychedelia borrowed from Peter Max and his acolytes, album covers, and the Beatles' film Yellow Submarine (George Dunning, 1968); and kitsch reminiscent of greeting cards and nudie illustrations from back issues of Playboy. That is to say, it's a mixed bag. There seems to have been at some point an attempt to turn the film's fable into a feminist statement, but the link of the story of a violated woman who turns into a witch with the role of women in the French Revolution is tacked on unconvincingly at the film's end. Nevertheless, it's like no other animated film I've seen, and not just because its images have a striking, violent erotic content. The story is about Jeanne, who on the night of her wedding to Jean is subjected to the ruler's droit de seigneur, but not just to him: She is raped by his courtiers as well. Trigger warnings are appropriate at this moment, because the rape is signified by images of Jeanne being torn apart with a torrent of blood that fills the screen. Eventually, Jeanne is tempted by the devil (a terrific voice performance by Tatsuya Nakadai), who appears to her in the form of a penis (no kidding). She allows him to possess her body but not her soul, and through various episodes, including a harrowing treatment of the Black Death, she prevails, striking out against nobility and the church. At one point she "liberates" the peasantry by means of an orgy, a sexual fantasy that is both astonishing and sometimes hilarious. Eventually, she is caught and burned at the stake, but the implication is that, like her namesake Jeanne D'Arc's, her cause will prevail. The film's vision is ultimately incoherent, but its audacity is worth experiencing.
