The two of you walked in silence with an unusual feeling in the air. You would occasionally look at him in the corner of your eye, seeing him walking relaxed and carefree. Osamu had his hands relaxed on the back of his head, making his hit shirt tighten around his biceps, looking bored as he stared straight ahead.

What is he thinking right now…

As if he could hear your thoughts, Osamu said, “I was thinking, how you got into skating.”

Can he read my mind?

“You said it out loud,” Osamu turned to face you, with an amusing smirk.

You cleared your throat, turning to face the other way. Feeling an embarrassing blush reaching your cheeks, you responded, “I use to do figure skating when I was younger.”

“Why you stop?” Osamu looked back forward.

“I twisted my ankle,” you hummed, put a piece of hair behind your ear, “and my parents wanted to wait until I was fully healed.”

“When was the last time you skated?” Osamu questioned.

Putting a finger on your chin, you thought back to when you last skated, “I think it was a few weeks before I became a manager…”

“You haven’t skated for two years?” Osamu let his arms fall to his side, looking at you in shock.

You hummed in agreement, looking at him with a raised eyebrow, “Why are you asking so many questions?”

“Just curious,” he shrugged, bring his hands behind his neck as the two of you continued to walk.

After walking in silence for a few minutes, the two of you arrived at the ice rink building. The two of you entered and went straight to the locker rooms. Arriving at the locker room doors, you turned to face Osamu, “You can change in there, I’ll meet you but those doors.”

“Yeah um,” Osamu stuttered, eyeing the door you pointed to at the end of your command. “I didn’t bring any other clothing…”

“Oh.” You retracted, “Do you have skates?”

“I was thinking they have some here,” Osamu looked down at, scratching the back of his neck embarrassing.

“They do,” you winced, “but other people have worn them before…”

“That’s fine,” Osamu shrugged, not caring about it.

“Just wait for me then,” you told him as you went inside the locker room to change.

As you were changing into a warm pair of leggings and haft zip pullover you couldn’t help but question Osamu's actions. Thinking of what he could gain from your interaction and learning how to skate. Then you remember last Saturday and his date with Yuna.

She probably likes to skate… But she could barely skate…

You continue to think of all the possibilities of what Osamu can gain, but you were stumped. Putting your bag and clothing in the locker, you then proceeded to exit the locker room. Before you left, you made sure to bring your new skates with you as you exit.

As you exit the locker room, you looked around to find Osamu. Finding him, you saw him leaning against the wall, his eyes closed and his arms crossed. Walking past him, you called, “Come on let’s get you a pair of skates.”

Pushing himself off the wall, Osamu jogged up to you and then started to walk at the same pace as you. Reaching a concession, you landed again on the flat table that separated you and those who were inside. Knocking at the table, you gained the attention of a worker. The worker turned around and stared at you with an amusing surprised expression, “(Y/n)! I haven’t seen you here for years.”

Smiling at him widely, you nodded, “Wanted to get back to skating.”

“What can I do for you then,” The man smiled, leaning on the tabletop.

Nudging your head towards Osamu's direction, you smirked, “He needs a pair of skates, give me the worsts one you got.”

“Don’t you mean the best ones?”

“Nope.”

“Okay…” he laughed and faced Osamu, “What size are you?”

“I’m a size ten,” Osamu answered politely, “thank you.”

“No problem,” the man said as he searched for a pair, “you, her boyfriend?”

“No,” both of you said, not skipping a beat.

“Shame,” he said, placing the skates on top of the table, “you two look cute together.”

Both you and Osamu laughed uncontrollably, not knowing what to say. Thanking him for the skates, you and Osamu made your way to the ice rink.

Sitting on the benches that were circling around the rink, both of you put on your skate. Once both of you were done, you helped Osamu stand and tried to help him find his balance. Slowly walking to the ice, Osamu grabbed hold onto the edge wall of the rink as he stepped in. You tried to bite away from the amassing smile on your face as you saw Osamu struggle.

Once Osamu was fully on the ice, you followed him in, gracefully walking in. “Can you try to stand on your own?” You smiled at him, enjoying how he couldn’t keep his balance.

Turning to give you a glare, Osamu let go of the wall and tried to find his balance. Osamu hands his arms out as if they were helping him keep balance and his knees were slightly bent. You noticed that Osamu was trying to keep his back straight, not wanting to lean forward. “Try not to bend your knees too much,” You told him as you went to him to fix his posture. Grabbing his arms, you gently tugged him to make him start to glide on the ice, causing Osamu to jolt at your touch, “Also lean a bit forward and relax.”

“I can’t relax,” Osamu said, looking down at his feet, “when at any moment I can fall.”

“Don’t look down,” you ignored his concern, “it’s only going to make it worse.”

Letting go of him, Osamu looked at you in concern, wanting you to continue to hold him so he wouldn’t fall. You then started to skate backward, trying to demonstrate to him, “Just so like how I do it. Leave your arms down on your side as if you are walking.”

Gulping down his nervousness, Osamu tried to mimic you. Doing what you said and what you were doing, Osamu still seems hesitant. You eyed him carefully, fulling prepare to help him if he falls. But surely, Osamu began to glide on the ice without any help. Getting the hang of it, Osamu looked at you as if he was waiting for something.

“What?” You questioned, looking at him weirdly.

“Aren’t you going to tell me I did a good job?” He asked you, looking at you as the two of you skated side by side.

“No,” you said plainly, “I did the most of the work.”

“You know I can fall and blame it on you,” Osamu bit back.

“It’ll be your fault for not taking my advice,” you smirked as you looked at him. “Besides its hard to blame me when I’m not near you when you fall.”

“What.”

Skating away before he could say anything, you turned away to wave him goodbye with a taunting smirk. Turning back around, you skated to the other side of the rink, leaving Osamu alone. Osamu looked at your retrieving figure, his mount hanged slightly open in shock. “I got this,” Osamu said to himself, “I can do this without her.”

You started to skate around on one side, doing spins and jumps. Occasionally you would look at Osamu, who barely skated halfway way around the rink. You giggled quietly as you saw Osamu still struggling a bit. Going to the side of the rink, you leaned on the hall as you continue to giggle at Osamu, not paying attention to the handful of others who are skating.

“Hey, it’s been a while,” you heard someone from the other side of you said.

Turning your head away from Osamu’s direction, you looked at who greeted you. “Akito?” You said in surprise, knowing the male.

“The one and only,” he chuckled at your surprised expression.

You looked at the black hair male as he casually leaned on the wall, smirking down at you. Staring into his golden eyes, you blushed underneath his stare, “So what have you been up?”

“Nothing much,” he shrugged his shoulders, tucking a piece of hair behind your ears, “what about you doll? I haven’t seen you in a while.”

“I see you’re still a flirt,” you said, light swamping his hand away. “If I knew you were going to be a flirt when we first met I would have kept my distance.”

“That’s because when we first met I wasn’t in love with you,” he whispered, leaning his head down close to yours.

Before you could push him away and say something about his teasing, the two of you heard a yell, “I don’t know how to stop!”

You and Akito looked where the voice was coming from. Craning your neck to the side, you saw Osamu coming towards you and Akito at a fast pace. Before you could react and move out of the way, Akito was quick to wrap his arm around your waist and tugging you close to him. Moving a bit back, Akito was quick to make you and his move out of the way.

With his arms stretch out, Osamu used the wall the stop his momentum. Crashing into the wall, hands first to prevent him from fully crashing. He almost lost his balance but re grained them after a few seconds. Turning to face you, Osamu narrowed his eyes at the black hair male, seeing his arms are still are around you and you hand your hands on his biceps. You started at Osamu in shock, baffled at how fast he was going and how he almost crashed into you. “Are you okay?” You hear Akito’s deep voice asked Osamu. “Your hand is bleeding a bit…”

Looking down at his hand, Osamu noticed that his handed landed on an exposed nail, “It’s just a scratch. How do you two know each other?”

“I’m Kato Akito.” He introduced himself, “And you are?”

“Miya Osamu.”

“Nice to meet you, Miya,” Akito smirked as he saw Osamu's eyes narrowed at him.

“Likewise,” Osamu replied, eyeing him, “aren’t you a bit old to know (Y/n)?”

“Just two years,” Akito said in a teasing voice, smirking as he noticed how irritated Osamu is getting.

“Still a bit old.

“Do you think it’s a bit old (Y/n)?” Akito smirked down at you but still eyed Osamu.

The two of them continued to eye each other, Osamu with irritation and Akito with mischievous amusement. But they then noticed that you haven’t said anything. Looking down at you, they noticed how red your face was and how you kept honking Akito biceps, muttering, “So many muscles.”

Osamu eyed twitched, not liking how you are enjoying being in want-a-be bad boy. While Akito was smirking with amusement, whispering to you, “I can flex them if you want.”

Your face instantly blushed even redder, his voice breaking you out of your trance when you realized what you were doing. Getting out of his arms, you cleared your throat, trying to calm down your heartbeat and reduce the redness on your face. “What were we talking about?”

“If I’m too old for you,” Akito said with a small pout. “I’m not that old, right (Y/n)-Chan.”

“No, not really,” you said thoughtful, still having a bit of red on your cheeks. “Why?”

“He thinks I’m too old for you (Y/n)-Chan,” Akito said in a sad voice.

“You’re just two years older than me,” you replied creasing your eyebrows as you thought he wasn’t that old for you.

“How do you two know each other?” Osamu said, not liking how the two of you have your own conversation.

“I saw him perform and I wanted to compliment him for his performance,” you told the grey head male, smiling at the memory. “We talked for hours and he started to help me with my practices whenever we saw each other.”

“And then I started to fall in love with her,” Akito smiled at you, to which you rolled your eyes at him. “But then you disappeared for two years without saying goodbye or a reason why you left me…”

“I sprained my ankled,” you laughed at him, “and then I started to become a manager for the boy's volleyball at school. I’m sorry for not keeping in touch.”

“The only reason I'm forgiving you is only because I love you,” Akito sighed out, pinching your cheek in a teasing manner. He then eyed Osamu with a mischievous look, finding it amusing when he saw Osamu's displeasure.

“You love her?” Osamu clenched his jaw.

“He’s just saying that,” you told Osamu, prying Akito’s hand off your cheek. “He’s a bigger flirt than ‘Tsumu.”

“I can tell,” Osamu replied, glaring at Akito who just smiled at him innocently.

“Say…” you heard Akito said, looking at him with innocent eyes, “Give me your number. I don’t want you to disappear on me again.”

“Fine,” you smiled. “Only because you said that so nicely.”

Handing his phone to you, you began to type in your number in his phone. As you were doing so, you didn’t notice the staring contest that was happening between Osamu and Akito. “Here you go,” you handed his phone back, making it to two boys to stop their contest. “And I just now noticed the time, it’s getting late.”

“I can walk you home,” Akito offered, making sure Osamu wouldn’t answer first.

“Don’t worry,” Osamu smirked, patting your head, “I can take her home.”

“You’re probably busy with something or wanting to hang out with some friends.”

“I have no social life or friends.”

Suna’s bedroom:

Suna felt his left ear starting to buzz as he laid on his bed, scrolling through his phone, “Someone is talking shit about me.”

Back at the present:

“(Y/n)-Chan isn’t your friend?” Akito asked with cancer, raising his eyebrow in a teasing manner.

“She’s my only friend,” Osamu challenged.

“Is there something else that’s happening that I don’t know about?” You asked the two in concern.

“No.” They both said in unison, each giving each other a subtle glare.

“Okay…” you said uneasy but then shrug it off, “But thank you Akito but Osamu can walk me home.”

“Okay,” Akito smiled politely at you, feeling his eyes twitch as he saw Osamu's victory smirk, “I’ll call you later tonight!”

Taking your hand, Akito gently kissed your knuckles as he held eye contact with you. His action caused you to blush heavily while Osamu gritted his teeth at him. Letting go of your hand, he gave you a farewell wave and smirked at Osamu in triumph as he skated away. “That bastard,” Osamu whispered to himself, feeling his eye twitch for the 100th time that evening.

“Let’s go?” You said, calming your raided heart, “Do you need help with skating to the exit?”

“Just give me a shove and open a path for me.”

Lily sat in the locker room bench; legs crossed with a medical textbook in front of her. She had an apple in her hand which she ate she scanned through the passages filled with medical jargon that might help her with treating one her patients. It was unusually quiet in the locker room, no doors slammed or chatter from the other residents. But Lily welcomed the serenity, it gave her the opportunity to focus and concentrate on the words in front of her.

However, she couldn’t. For a certain fellow member of the Diagnostics Team was consuming her thoughts instead.

It had been exactly 4 months and 17 days since she’d been offered the position that everyone had been vying over. And it had also been exactly 4 months and 17 days since whatever was between herself and Dr. Ethan Ramsey had ended. In truth, she wasn’t expecting it to hurt as much as it did. Even though she’d known that night before was going to be their last now that Ethan had been reinstated. She thought she had prepared enough emotionally. That their night together would’ve satisfied her enough to let him go. But she was wrong. Incredibly wrong.

She hadn’t expected to be offered the position on the Diagnostics Team, she was grateful to be even given a second chance at Edenbrook. She definitely hadn’t anticipated being promoted. And certainly not to the very team where the man running it was one she’d slept with twice and had an undeniable connection with.

She knew ending whatever it was between them was the right thing to do. She knew that. But it was still hard. Especially when she saw Ethan every day, had to work with him on patients, confer with him on treatment plans – all the while pretending that everything was fine when in reality, she wanted nothing more than to take his hand in hers and just touch him.

That was the thing that got her the most. Not being able to just touch him. Hold his hand. Trace her fingers up his arm. Or run her fingers across the stubble on her jaw – her favourite thing to do. She could handle not kissing him – she wanted to do that too – but to be starved of his touch was the hardest. There were times where Ethan’s hand would graze hers as he pointed to something on a chart, or his arm would brush against hers as he passed her, and the energy of that contact travelled through her entire being, giving her goosebumps and making her stomach flip. It was kind of like that feeling you get when you accidentally touch the person you’ve been crushing on, but it was all backwards because Lily had already been with Ethan.

Lily sighed and closed her textbook and tossed her apple core in the bin. She put her head in her hands. She didn’t know what to do. She’d been pretending and walking on eggshells around Ethan for months now. She was tired. And she didn’t know how long she could keep this up. It was even more of a stab in the heart when she saw Ethan being so irrevocably and completely normal around her. Like nothing had changed. Like nothing had even happened between them. It was like Lily had imagined the whole thing and was holding onto nothing but a fantasy.

She stood up and put the textbook in her locker. With her break over and no progress on a plan for her patient, she straightened her classic white doctor jacket in the mirror, before leaving the locker room. She walked down the hallways, making her way to Ethan’s office, her feet knowing the familiar route without even thinking about it. She needed advice on her patient, and she was clearly getting nowhere by herself. She had no choice but to talk to Ethan. No matter how much she didn’t want to. It was much easier to pretend when she wasn’t near him.

It wasn’t long before she was in front of his office door. The dark blue nameplate that read “Dr. Ethan Ramsey” a contrast to the light wood of the door. He might not even be in his office. She hoped he wouldn’t be. But there was also a part of her that wanted to see him. Because this was all she got now. She had to take what she could get. Until she eventually got over him. If she ever did.

Lily took a deep breath and raised her slightly trembling hand to the wood of the door. She stood there for a few seconds that felt more like hours, contemplating whether to even bother Ethan with this, he’s no doubt busy and she was more than capable of figuring this out herself once she forced herself to concentrate. She didn’t want to rely on Ethan. She didn’t want to be that girl.

With a clenched hand and her fingernails digging into her palm, she mumbled. “Just knock, you dumbass.”

“Lily?”

Lily whipped her head to the side and saw him. Ethan. He was standing there with a clipboard in hand, looking as handsome as ever in his classic blue shirt and tie under his Edenbrook coat. Lily took in breath both from the sight of him and the realisation that he’d seen her in front of his door, just standing there with her hand poised to knock.

“Ethan. I mean. Dr. Ramsey. Hi.” Lily stuttered as she jumped back and quickly retracted her and held it behind her back.

Ethan cleared his throat. “Dr. Murphy.”

There was a beat of silence between them where both weren’t sure what to say to each other. This interaction felt different somehow. Every time they’d spoken there was this level of distance and professionalism that they maintain to ensure that neither of them got too close – that there was a boundary between them. But this time Ethan had caught Lily in this private moment with herself, it almost felt like an intrusion.

Lily took a breath. “Um, how long have you been standing there?”

Ethan shook his head. “Not long.”

He was lying. Lily could always tell.

“I need to talk to you about a patient.” She asked tentatively.

Ethan nodded and strode to his door to unlock it, he opened it and stood to the side to let Lily in first. Lily mumbled a ‘thanks’ as she walked into the office. Ethan followed as he went behind the desk, put his clipboard down and began to file the papers in the meticulously organised filing cabinet.

Lily stood at the edge of the scene in front of her. She watched him move effortlessly, the awkwardness in the air around them.

“Well? What is it?” Ethan asked. “I’ve got a meeting with Banerji in 10 minutes.”

Lily blinked at his bristled tone. “I need some help with figuring out the best course of action with a patient who’s got some contradicting issues.”

“Can’t you do that yourself? You’re more than capable, Li— Dr. Murphy.” Ethan huffed.

Lily frowned. “Excuse me for disturbing you. I just wanted to treat the patient correctly.”

Ethan sighed. “That’s not what I meant.”

“So, what did you mean?” Lily crossed her arms.

“I meant, you’re a good doctor, Lily.” Ethan replied.

“That doesn’t mean I don’t need help every now and then.” Lily retorted.

Ethan ran his hand through his tousled hair. “I haven’t got time for this right now.”

“Then make time!” Lily exclaimed with a spark of anger.

Lily and Ethan looked at each other, both surprised by her outburst. Ethan was often hard to read, but this time, his eyes betrayed him completely. “Why do you keep pushing me away?” Lily whispered.

Ethan closed his eyes and hung his head. “Don’t do this, Lily.”

“Just answer the question, Ethan.” Lily said sternly.

“You know exactly why.” Ethan replied sharply.

“No, I don’t think I do. Maybe you can explain it to me in a way that I understand.” Lily patronised.

“Stop acting like a child, we’re adults, Lily.” Ethan rolled his eyes.

“Says the man who can’t deal with and express his emotions.” Lily knew the words were harsh and unfair, but she was angry. Months of frustration and hurt that have been bottled up were finally coming out. “You’ve barely looked at me properly in months. It’s like everything that happened didn’t even matter to you.”

“You know damn well that’s not true.” Ethan flared.

“Do I?” Lily challenged. “So, answer my question, Ethan.”

“You think it’s just so easy, don’t you?” Ethan replied, acid on his tongue with every word as he stepped towards her. “Have you even considered the ethnical and workplace consequences of us? There are patients to consider, the team, HR, we can’t just say ‘fuck it’ and do what we want, Lily. There are bigger issues here than me and you.”

“I’m not some petulant child that doesn’t understand consequences, Ethan. But I know when to take a risk for something that’s important to me.” Lily replied.

They were almost chest to chest now, and Lily has to crane her neck to look at Ethan.

“I’m not a risk-taker. You know that.”

“So, I guess that translates into; ‘You’re not worth the risk.’ Got it.” Lily smiled with contempt. “Guess I have my answer.”

Lily stepped back and began to turn away from Ethan, but he reached for her arm and pulled her back. “That’s not what I’m saying.”

Lily raised her voice, exasperated and said; “Then what are you saying, Ethan!? Stop speaking in riddles and just fucking tell me! I’m so fucking tired of tiptoeing around you and us. I know you saw me standing outside your door for longer than you said, I can’t even talk to you anymore without getting this awful dread in the pit of my stomach that I hate because I shouldn’t feel like that around the person that I—”

“I’m scared, okay?!” Ethan exclaimed. Silence enveloped them, the only sound was Lily and Ethan’s breaths, heavy from the argument. Ethan cupped Lily’s cheeks as he said; “I want you more than anything, Lily. But I’m scared of what could happen if we…” He shook his head.

Lily blinked at him. Before she let out a breath of disbelief mixed with relief and dare-she-say, love? And put her hands over his, rubbing her thumbs over the back of his hand. Finally. “If we what, Ethan?”

Ethan took in a breath. “If we pursue this, what would happen when everyone finds out? I don’t want them thinking negative things, especially about you.”

Lily shook her head. “I don’t care about anyone else. And you shouldn’t either. You’re Ethan fucking Ramsey for god’s cake.” Lily smiled. “I care about you. Anyone that knows me knows the truth.”

“And what if…if this doesn’t work?” Ethan asked. “What would we do then? How would it affect our work?”

“But what if it does work?” Lily whispered.

Ethan shook his head, pulling away from Lily and turning his back, running a hand through his hair again. “I don’t know, Lily. I don’t know I can do this.”

Ethan stood with his hands on his hips and his head to the ceiling, his eyes closed. Lily walked behind him and wrapped her arms around his waist, her forehead resting on his back. She couldn’t deny that she felt him relax under her touch. And Ethan couldn’t either.

Lily moved to hold his right arm with both hands, before moving one to hold his hand. His fingers instinctively interlaced with hers. “What if we…what if we come up with a plan?” Lily looked up at him.

“What kind of plan?” Ethan asked, looking down at her by his side.

“A plan to try this. Try us. See where it goes. But we’ll keep it a secret, so, we can see if we like us. Then we’ll talk to Banerji about this if we really do. He’ll understand. You’re like a son to him. And then if it’s okay, we’ll tell some people – my friends, but still keep it quiet so it doesn’t impact the workplace.” Lily suggested, her thumb rubbing his hand again like it was the most natural thing in the world.

“And if it’s not okay? What if Banerji says no?” Ethan asked.

“Then we figure something out. I move from Edenbrook, maybe.” Lily replied with a small shrug.

“I can’t make you do that.” Ethan shook his head in disapproval.

Lily leaned her head on his arm. “But I would, for you. For us.”

“Us...” Ethan whispered.

“What do you think?” Lily asked with a small voice. “Can we do that? Do you want to?”

“It’s going to be hard.” Ethan said.

“I know.”

“But I want to. God knows I want to more than anything.” Ethan sighed like a weight was lifted off his shoulders and turned so he could take both of Lily’s hands. “I can’t bear another day without you.”

Lily didn’t know who moved in first. But their lips finally connected, and both of them collapsed into the kiss. Lily wrapped her arms around his neck as Ethan’s arms went around her middle, holding her there before lifting her to his height. Lily wrapped her legs around him and smiled into the kiss, her fingers playing with the hair at the nape of his neck. The world stopped around them. They both starved for this kiss and it was finally happening, and it was as if all the pieces of the world’s hardest puzzle fell into place.

When they finally broke away, they rested their foreheads together. Smiling and looking into each other’s eyes. Ethan was still holding her effortlessly as Lily hugged him tightly, burying her head into the crook of his neck as his stubble tickled her skin. Ethan held her just as tightly as he did the same, his eyes shutting as he breathed in the smell of her skin and the familiar smell of her cocoa butter shampoo.

Lily pressed a light kiss to Ethan’s neck. “I missed you.”

Ethan smiled into her skin. “I missed you more.”

The Baroness knew she could not trust her eyes this time. She ventured down the same alleyway as before, knowing that within that finely illusioned basement, the Arcanist awaited. Or at least some copy of her.

As she approached, the bricks of the wall melted and formed a dark wooden door. She raised her hand to knock, but the door creaked open before her knuckles met its surface.

The Arcanist stood before her, a towering visage of wild curls messily pinned up and silver chains dangling from her lengthy ears. She wore high-waisted dress pants and a low-cut see-through white shirt. Kato’s eyes took in the expanse of silvery tattoo work before she brought her piercing gaze up to the Arcanist’s eyes.

“A pleasure to see you again, Lady Sunbane.” Thelwyn moved with the slow elegance of someone with time on their side, “Please come in, the night is cold.”

Kato stepped through the door and was met by a different illusion than before. She took in the room, detail by precious detail. She was looking for some sort of crack in the Arcanist’s well-cast illusion.

The room was a dark, warmly lit place. Fifteen feet by fifteen feet. A desk on the far end to the left was covered in papers and quills, ink pots and crystals. On the other end of the room, a legless bed, floating a few inches from the floor. The walls above were covered in suspended bookshelves. Arcane torches cast an eerie, trembling light.

“A new place, I see.” Kato spoke in her most measured tone. She would not be blindsided this time.

Thelwyn closed the door and held out a hand to take the Baroness’ cloak — which Kato declined, keeping her cloak wrapped about her. Thelwyn waltzed into the room, “New, yes.” She hummed, “Can I get you anything? A refreshment?”

“No, thank you.” Kato wrung her gloved hands, still taking in the room.

You are not alone. The whispers coiled within her ears and she narrowed her eye.

“I wish to get to the dealings. I have quite a busy schedule ahead of me. I’m certain you understand, Miss Nightweaver.”

Thelwyn gave a nod, “Oh yes.” She ran her hand through the air, summoning the stool from beneath the desk to dash over to her. She took a seat, “Your letter said you wished for a similar enchantment to your pocketwatch. Do you have an item you wish for me to use?”

The Baroness pulled the brooch from within her cloak. As she moved forth, the whispers never stopped. She could feel it. The presence of another. She held out the golden brooch to the Arcanist, dropping it in her outstretched hand, “I wish for it to be the same enchantment as my pocketwatch. I have need for a fellow Ren’dorei to have access to Quel’thalas.”

Thelwyn took it up, turning it over in her fingers. Slowly she nodded, “That can be done. What is my wiggle room for alterations?”

It took Kato a few moments to respond. She could feel something brush past behind her and the whispers spiked, Betrayal. She seeks your heart. An assassin? Trickery afoot.

“As little alterations as possible. It is an heirloom of another family. Any alteration you have to make, ensure it is hard to notice.” Kato lifted her chin and looked through the corner of her eye. There, seated on the bed, the lurker in the shadows. Kato’s lip lifted in disgust, “I thought we were alone, Arcanist.”

Thelwyn looked up from the brooch with a gentle look of surprise. Her eyes then fell on the bed. She smiled in greeting, “Oh, my apologies. I didn’t know she’d be back so soon. Forgive me, Baroness.” She got to her feet, easily shadowing the smaller Ren’dorei. With an extended arm, Thelwyn introduced them, “This is Fox, my work partner.”

Kato turned, facing Fox fully. The rugged red-head sat on the edge of the bed, one leg dangling off. Tendrils hung from beneath her hair, coiling about her. The whispers were loud.

She seeks your demise.

Fox couldn’t silence the whisper. It was in the forefront of her mind, as though she herself had thought it. Fox hopped up from the bed, approaching the Baroness with sure, steady strides. An arm hooked behind her back, she dropped into a regal bow. Fox took the Baroness’ hand and kissed her gloved knuckles.

“How... respectful.” Kato muttered.

Fox rose, “It’s a pleasure to see you are still well, Lady Sunbane.”

“Hm. The pleasure is all mine.” Kato withdrew her hand.

Thelwyn chuckled lightly, the sound breaking the tension, “Oh, I see you two are already acquainted.” She gave a shake of her head, smiling, “No introductions necessary!”

Fox smiled crookedly, “Indeed we are.” She sank back, going to the desk and leaning against it.

Kato’s gaze never left Fox, a certain level of unease between the two. Was Kato to meet her end in this place? Whatever this place truly was?

“I can enchant this. I’ll perhaps have to lightly alter the backside of it, but I will make sure it won’t do anything to the final product.” Thelwyn continued to break the silence, seemingly oblivious to the two. “Is this all?”

The Baroness looked to Thelwyn and shook her head, “I have another thing to ask of you.” She produced two golden rings, holding them out to the Arcanist, “I wish to have these enchanted as well.”

Thelwyn plucked the rings from Kato’s hand, inspecting them as she had with the brooch. “And what would you like done with these?”

Kato pulled a scroll case from within her cloak, “I want the symbol to be magically scribed onto the rings. The finer details are included on the paper. As for payment—” Kato adjusted her stance, chin high, back straight, “—name your price.”

The Baroness watched as Thelwyn passed the items to Fox. Fox placed them on the desk, her gaze lingering on the brooch. She ran a finger over it, perplexed. It wasn’t often the items she acquired and didn’t keep found their way back to her.

Steal it. They’ll never know it was gone. Take it, it’s rightfully yours. All things you desire can be yours. Take it.

Fox withdrew with a shake of her head, her hands behind her, eyes on the brooch.

“If it is alright with you, I would like to do the work first. I’d like to properly weigh the cost of such a thing after it is complete.” Thelwyn tilted her head, awaiting Kato’s response.

She gave a dismissive shrug, “Very well.” She glanced about the room once more, “Send for me when you are done.”

With a bow of her head, Thelwyn gave a light wave of her hand and the door creaked open, “It won’t be too long, Lady Sunbane.”

Kato turned and headed for the door. Once out on the streets of Boralus, the door pulled shut behind her and vanished, never there.

“What are ya gonna ask for, Thel?” Fox questioned. Thelwyn stayed seated, though she hunched over now, elbows on her knees.

“I’m not sure yet.” She glanced over her shoulder at Fox, “Is there something you want from her?”

Fox raised a short brow, “Nothing short of wanting her dead.” She muttered.

Thelwyn got to her feet, crossing to Fox. She held Fox’s face, her neck craned to look down at the Ren’dorei. Her thumbs ran over Fox’s freckled cheeks, “You know I can’t have you killing my customers.” She chuckled.

Fox sighed, “I know.” Her hand went to Thelwyn’s wrist, lightly holding on, “I want something she won’t like giving us.”

Thelwyn kissed Fox’s forehead and shifted over to the desk, laying out the items, “Then that is what it will cost.”
