Unlike PB, I did embrace the idea of House Rys’s surname changing over the centuries of rule. The change to Reese was initiated by Queen Constantina upon her ascension to the throne in 1800 CE, who chose to Anglicize the name as representation of her new conquering style of rule

Eleanor is the one who gave Liam his Chinese/Korean name 敏俊: the first character is the generation name meaning “quick/clever/sharp,” and the second is the given name meaning “talented/handsome”

His given name Jun can also be formed by the character 君, which means “king/ruler”

Leo’s nickname for Liam is based on the Greek spelling Gouliélmos, and Eleanor’s nickname for him means “second treasure” (with Leo being the first as the eldest)

Liam chose to use his mother’s maiden name as his regnal name, which is why he’s formally addressed as King Shen. This was done to honor Eleanor…but his name being a variant of William may have also been a slight factor
