Directed by David Butler
Produced by Buddy G. DeSylva for 20th Century-Fox
Written by David Butler, Buddy G. DeSylva, and Sid Silvers
Choreography by Harold Hecht
Synopsis ~ Spencer Tracy stars as fast-buck promoter Smoothie King. Our hero's latest scam is to pass off Hollywood extra Wanda Gale (Pat Patterson) and forger Limey Brook (Herbert Mundin) as British nobility, getting both of them prestigious jobs at a movie studio. Eventually Wanda becomes a big star, falling out of love with Smoothie along the way in favor of her leading man Hal Reed (John Boles). But Smoothie takes it all in stride; after all, there's still a world full of chumps and suckers, ripe for fleecing.

Tumblr media
Barbara Pepper* (Chorine) made six films with Lucille Ball, including her Lucy’s first, Roman Scandals (1933). The two became friends, and she was one of the first people Lucille Ball wanted for the role of Ethel Mertz after Bea Benadaret passed. Pepper’s drinking made her a risk for the network and sponsor, but she went on to make ten appearances on “I Love Lucy”.

Tumblr media
Lucille Ball was paid $75 dollars a week when she was loaned out to Fox by RKO to make this film. She appears in the song “Waitin’ at the Gate for Katy.”
Tumblr media
The film received a favorable review from The New York Times critic Mordaunt Hall, who called it "a neat, carefree piece of work, which is helped greatly by Spencer Tracy, Pat Paterson, an English actress who here makes her American picture bow; Herbert Mundin, Harry Green, and, to a lesser extent, by John Boles" and noted that it "has its full share of honest humor and also several tuneful songs." Nonetheless, it was a box office disappointment for Fox.

Better as friends (18) worlds worst dinner party
Previously
Series Masterlist
Chapter warnings :language, mentions of alchohol, mentions of being abandoned (barely)
A/N : this chapter gives a little glimpse into Alison's backstory and it's the first time I've written anything like it , so let me know what you though
~~~~
It was a cold and icy Christmas eve in Indianapolis one of the coldest winters the city had ever seen , the streets were beautifully decorated and the children all asleep as the awaited the highly anticipated jolly old St. Nick. Except one , in the Martin home there were two daughters Beatrice the oldest who had a long day including a nutcracker performance and making cookies with her mother and younger sister Alison. Alison was the youngest daughter unlike her sister Beatrice she the more creative and artistic one who preferred to be inside and color which was something she was very goo at especially for being five. Alison quietly creeped down the stairs before peeking into the formal living room where the beautiful decorated Christmas tree was. Since Mrs. Martin takes pride in how her home looks , seeing that there were no gifts and the stockings were still empty Alison tiptoed into the kitchen for a small glass of water only to find her mother sitting at the kitchen island. The same kitchen island they would eat blueberry pancakes and decorate ginger bread , but her mother didn't look like the same woman who was cheering and applauding her first born at the ballet earlier or the one that would read the night before Christmas by the fire place as her daughters fell asleep on the father's lap. Instead she had mascara running down her cheeks and a glass of wine in her hand and wasn't even acknowledging the dog that the girls had woken up to last Christmas with a bright red bow on him. What made it worst was she was practically devouring Santa's cookies , Alison frowned before saying "mommy". Kathrine didn't even turn around she just stayed quiet in the dark kitchen before saying "what Alison" Alison spoke again saying "where's daddy" her mother responded "he left to get food for the dog, but that was hours ago". Alison frowned saying "oh well is he gonna be home before Santa comes" Katharine placed her wineglass on the counter before laughing , laughing so hard almost falling out of her seat. The kinda laughter you would only hear from her when her daughters came inside covered in mud including the dog or when one of the girls pick socks got in the washer while washing her husband's dress shirts. She then turned in his seat before walking towards the stairs saying "oh Alison don't you know there is no Santa , it was your father and judging by the fact he's not here there will be no Christmas". Alison frowned before watching her mother walk up the stairs leading to the master suite leaving Alison all alone on the last Christmas eve they'd spend as a family...
Steve's P.o.v
"Alison" she looked up at me saying "what" I responded saying "I'm going to dinner with my parents tonight do you wanna go". She shook her head before I added "are you sure" she nodded before pecking my cheek saying "have fun though" I nodded before shrugging off her quietness. Alison was never quiet was something bothering her , should I stay but my father pulled me aside at work today telling me that my mother wanted me over for dinner and Alison was welcome to come but it wasn't as required as my presence. An Alison was excited about dinner until a few minutes ago , I realized after meeting her parents that Alison wasn't very fond of family gatherings especially holidays. As I made my way to my parents house I couldn't help but think what was so pressing , and the thoughts of Stewart and Y/n showing up yesterday were still fresh in my head especially the fact that I had packed Jackson's bag and made sure the blanket was in there. I pulled into my parents driveway to see both my parents cars and now I knew why my mother wanted me over for dinner, my sister was here. I kicked around some of the gravel trying to relief the stress of having to see my sister, but I knew she didn't know about Alison and that my parents were probably giving a nasty review on her and I knew she'd take Y/n's side over mine just cause. I knocked on the door before opening it to see the front door was unlocked , I removed my sport coat I wore to work before walking thru the dinner room to see my parents and my Sister. My mother quickly walked over to me engulfing me in a hug before my sister walked ove brushed my hair causing to roll my eyes and my mother to say "be nice you too". It had probably been two years since I last saw my sister and I could already feel suffocated by the awkwardness before she spoke saying "so baby brother" I rolled my eyes at the awful nickname she'd been calling me since we were kids almost worst then the nicknames Alison had for me , I mean I loved those. My sister continued saying "what's it like working for the old man" I shrugged saying "okay I guess" she then added. "How've you been" I nodded before returning the favor with the awful nickname saying "fine how about you Polly pop" she rolled her eyes saying "yep your still and ass". My mother spoke before saying "Polly , Steven that's enough , I swear you kids haven't aged past five" my sister and I rolled our eyes before sitting down for dinner.
It was after dinner when we eating my mother's peach cobbler when dad asked "how's Y/n doing these days" I rolled my eyes saying "fine". Polly spoke up saying "hey sorry about missing his birthday work was crazy but I sent something to Y/n" I rolled my eyes as my mother asked "how's work Polly" she nodded saying "fine , hey listen do you know where nana's ring is I know a place in Indianapolis and I thought I'd get it cleaned". Mom shrugged before dad spoke up saying "it's in the cabinet in my office" I sighed saying "actually I had it". Dad huffed saying "had it , you idiot you lost it" I shook my head saying "no I know were it is I just don't have it". Dad huffed saying "I swear if it's on Alison's left hand you'll be-" I cut him off saying "no dad I gave it to Y/n , she has it". Mom gasped saying "you were engaged" before I could respond Polly spoke saying "who the hell is Alison" mom responded saying "don't let me get started on her". I sighed saying "Alison is my girlfriend and yes Y/n and I were kinda engaged it's a long story and she's keeping it for Jackson". Polly chuckled saying "good thing cause he'll probably get married before you" I rolled my eyes as my dad said "what do you mean kinda engaged" I shook my head saying "it's a long story I'm not getting into it". The table remained quiet before mom spoke saying "Steven I was talking to the girls at lunch and I just can't seem to remember what it is Y/n does for a living". I signed saying "well one you could probably talk to them about my actually girlfriend and Y/n works for Matt's dad and that's all I know cause I really don't care". My mother sighed before dad asked "how's that Paterson kid" I responded with "fine him and Coleen are having a baby I guess". My mother responded saying "I thought Y/n was with Matthew" I shook my head saying "no mother Y/n is with Stewart". Polly laughed before saying "Stewart Graham , oh that has to suck for you" mom huffed saying "language Polly" polly continued her laughing fit before my father spoke saying "well what did I tell you-" my mother cut him off saying "were not talking about this at the table", my father shook his head saying "no Jenifer I'm not going to baby him like you do , he's a grown man so here it goes. Your mother and I don't like Alison " I sighed as he added "she's no good something is off there and from what I overheard at the birthday party , what she said to the woman who stuck around when you were being a little asshole the same girl who gave you that little boy. Now from what your mother tells me it's not an easy task but she did it and this is how you repay her by bringing someone like that around". I huffed saying "you know you Y/n and everyone else needs to get over it cause I like Alison a lot and you all can just deal with it". Dad shook his head saying "maybe you should start wearing your glasses again son cause you are so blind I'm telling you she's not who she says she is" I rolled my eyes again saying "dad could you just try to be happy for me and for Jackson" he responded saying "not when your being stupid and don't think throwing his name around makes you look innocent". I huffed before finally losing my patience with my family , I got up from the table before walking towards the front door as my mother asked "where are you going" I huffed saying "getting away from you monsters" mom responded saying "we are your family". I shook my head saying "no your not , my family is Alison and Jackson I'm done with you people" I slammed the door before getting to my car,
Feedback is appreciated , stay safe and let me know what your thoughts were and please don't plagiarize my work.
Open letter to Theresa May
Dear Prime Minister,
The government's decision to close the "Dubs" lifeline for vulnerable refugee children is truly shameful. The idea that as a country we will slam the door shut after just 350 children have reached safety is completely unacceptable. Lord Dubs was himself a child saved by Sir Nicholas Winton who rescued 669 children virtually single-handed. It is embarrassing that the Prime Minister's entire government will not even manage to match the example set by her former constituent all those years ago, let alone the efforts of the Kindertransport movement of which he was a part which saved 10,000 children from the Nazis. It is clear from the work of charities like Citizens UK's Safe Passage project and Help Refugees with unaccompanied child refugees across Greece, Italy and France that where these safe and legal routes are blocked, children are left with a terrible choice between train tracks on the one hand and people traffickers on the other. The government's threadbare consultation with councils is now nine months out of date. The country we know and love is bigger than this. Communities and councils across the country stand ready to do more. The government must agree to extend the programme and re-consult with councils immediately.
Yours truly,
It’s January round-up time again, and like last year, we’ve had a decent number of reviews posted. All that summer-time reading has done us proud.
As you’re probably aware, the awards season has started. The Indie Book Awards shortlist was announced in January, so look for my comment on those below. So far in February, we’ve had the announcement of the Stella Prize longlist and the winners of the Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards. However, as this is a January round-up, I’ll leave those for February …
January jottings
January is always a good month for reading – at the beach if it’s pleasant, or in air-conditioned comfort if not! The result was a good month with 54 reviews posted for Literary and Classic books – just a couple less than last January, but still making a good start to our year. Here are some statistical highlights:
Our most reviewed author was Holly Throsby, with five reviews for Cedar Valley
Our top reviewer was Brenda (Goodreads), who submitted five reviews
Sixteen, that is, 27% of the month’s reviews, were for Classics! The reason for this will become obvious below…
The Classics
… which is that Bill (The Australian Legend) hosted his second Australian Women Writers week on his blog, this time for Gen 2 writers. Gen 2 focuses on writing that falls roughly between 1890 and 1918. This month’s Classics authors (not all of whom were Gen 2 writers) were Capel Boake; Mary Grant Bruce (2 books); Ada Cambridge; Isobelle Carmody; Miles Franklin (2 books); Mary Gaunt; Louise Mack (3 books); Ruth Park; Katharine Susannah Prichard; PL Travers; and Ethel Turner (2 books).
Since there are too many here for me to describe in one post, I’ll choose just a couple, starting with Louise Mack (1870-1935) who had three books reviewed. Bill (The Australian Legend) reviewed her schoolgirl novel Teens, and I (Whispering Gums), reviewed its sequel, Girls together, while Nancy, over in the Netherlands, reviewed her memoir, A woman’s experiences in the Great War. Mack was a fascinating woman. She was in Belgium when the war started, and worked as, says Nancy, “the first woman war correspondent for the Evening News and the London Daily Mail. This book is her eye-witness account of the German invasion of Antwerp. 28 September – 10 October 1914 (1 week and 5 days).” Nancy described the book as “Good eye-witness reporting…but very outmoded” in approach and style, which is probably not surprising, given its time-frame.
Two participants wrote about Mary Grant Bruce’s Billabong books. Michelle Scott Tucker, author of the biography, Elizabeth Macarthur: A life at the edge of the world, wrote about the whole Billabong series. Like me who read my mother’s old copies of these books, Michelle read her mother’s friend’s copies, and said she “was transported”. While recognising that the books suffer now because they exhibit their time’s attitudes to race, gender and class, Michelle says that at their best they
championed the values of independence, mateship, hard work (for women and children, as well as men), and bush hospitality.
However, she concludes that because their values are disturbing to us,
Their value now is more for their insights into a not-so-distant historical period and mindset, rather than as a book that a modern child might thrill to read by torchlight, under the covers.
Brenda (GoodReads) reviewed Captain Jim, the sixth in the series. It is set in England during World War 1, and tells about a home set up by the series’ heroine, Norah, and her father, to help soldiers newly released from hospital to recover completely before heading back to war. Brenda greatly enjoyed the book, saying that “it’s exceptionally well written (originally published in 1919) and both heartwarming, and heartbreaking”.
Non-fiction (General)
We have two non-fiction categories here at the Challenge: “history, memoir and biography”, and – well – the rest (aka “non fiction, general”)! Most of our non-fiction reviews fall into the former category, and most non-fiction isn’t flagged as literary, but this month we had three. Two have been short and/or longlisted for literary awards – Chloe Hooper’s The arsonist, and Maria Tumarkin’s Axiomatic. Being listed for significant literary awards like the Stella Prize or the Melbourne Prize for Literature automatically qualifies a book as “literary”, but otherwise the decision can be subjective. Our readers seem to have agreed that television journalist Leigh Sales’ book, Any ordinary day, should also be tagged “literary”.
Chloe Hooper’s The arsonist is garnering a lot of attention, partly of course because its subject is so close to Australia’s heart in summer. Kate (booksaremyfavouriteandbest) explains why it is seen as “literary”. It has a “compelling narrative”, the writing is “poetic”, and Hooper “manages to include the necessary factual information without slipping into pure journalistic reporting”. All these point to its being firmly in the “creative non-fiction” genre. Calzean reviewed it briefly on GoodReads, describing it as “scary” and “complex due to the mental state of the arsonist”.
I reviewed Maria Tumarkin’s Axiomatic, a collection of essays which interrogates some of those axioms we tend to accept as given – such as “time heals all wounds” and “you can’t step in the same river twice” – revealing that there’s a lot more to these so-called “truths” than we think. It’s an idiosyncratic, provocative book, written in a style that keeps you on your toes, but it is compelling and, importantly for me, compassionate.
Three participants reviewed Leigh Sales book: Brona (Brona’s Books), Life After Sixty-five, and Kali Napier (GoodReads). Life After Sixty-five liked the way Sales blends her research and investigation with some very personal questions about trauma, tragedy and “why me?” She says that
this book is worthy of a bright highlighter, something I couldn’t use on my borrowed library book. There is not a waffling word in this generous, searching and compassionate quest for answers to some big questions.
Brona was initially sceptical – after all, a big journalist writes a book and gets big publicity – but says she was “very wrong” to have doubted! The book, she says,
is all about reminding us that the big stuff can happen at any time and that we should remember to be grateful for, and savour, the everyday, ordinary moments, for ‘they’re not so ordinary, really. Hindsight makes them quite magical‘.
Kali Napier (GoodReads) was not as enamoured as our other two reviewers, feeling that Sales’ sense of “randomness” is not completely valid. Kali argues that society is not a level playing field. For many, traumatic events, grief, loss and acts of violence are more LIKELY to happen to them because they don’t live in the bubble of being white, middle-class, beautiful, loved, etc etc.”  I haven’t read the book, but this question has crossed my mind when I’ve heard this book discussed. Anyhow, in the end Kali is concerned:
So much focus on ‘good people’ who aren’t ‘deserving’ of the events that befall them implies the inverse: that there are bad people out there, and they are more deserving of being blindsided.
But, she says, this is her “subjective gut reaction”. Sounds like we need more readers and reviewers! Interested?
Indie Book Awards 2019
The shortlist for the Indie Book Awards – which are voted by Australia’s independent booksellers – was announced on January 16. There are books by women in each of the three main categories of interest to my section. All have been reviewed for the Challenge, which is pleasing to see, though not all in January.
Fiction: (2 of 4, by women)
Jane Harper’s The lost man (Macmillan Australia). (Her Force of nature was shortlisted last year)
Kristina Olsson’s Shell (Scribner Australia)
Non-fiction: (3 of 4, by women)
Chloe Hooper’s The arsonist (Penguin Random House Australia)
Bri Lee’s Eggshell skull (Allen & Unwin)
Leigh Sales’ Any ordinary day (Penguin Random House Australia)
Debut fiction: (1 of 4, by a woman)
Heather Morris’ The tattooist of Auschwitz (Echo Publishing)
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
  The winners will be announced on 18 March at the 2019 Leading Edge Books conference in Adelaide.
About Me
I am Whispering Gums and I read, review and blog about (mostly) literary fiction. It was reading Jane Austen when I was 14 years old that turned me on to reading literary fiction/classics, which is why I am here today doing this round-up! Little did Jane know what she started!
My love of Aussie literature started with Banjo Paterson’s ballads and Ethel Turner’s Seven Little Australians in my childhood. But, I didn’t really discover Australian women’s writing until the 1980s when I fell in love with Elizabeth Jolley, Thea Astley, Olga Masters, Helen Garner and Kate Grenville. Ever since then I have been included a good percentage of Australian (and other) women writers in my reading diet.
Classics and Literary Round-up: January 2019 It's January round-up time again, and like last year, we've had a decent number of reviews posted.
“Türk dostu Amerikalara teşekkürü borç biliyoruz”
Etkinliğin organizasyonunu üstlenen TOA Danışmanlık Operasyon Müdürü Cüneyt Gürkan, amaçlarının Türk Amerikan toplumundaki değerleri ortaya çıkarmak olduğunu söyledi. Gürkan, New York merkezli kar amacı gütmeyen hayır kuruluşu Turkish Philanthropy Funds’un ve Türk Hava Yolları’nın desteklediği gecede açık artırmalardan elde edilecek gelirin de Türkiye’de gerçekleştirilecek hayır projelerine aktarılacağını bildirdi. Gürkan, Türk Amerikan ilişkilerinin çok zorlu geçtiği ortamda pozitif bir etki oluşturmak için ‘Türk Dostu Amerikalılara’ teşekkür etmek için toplandıklarını belirtti. Yaklaşık 25 kişilik bir ekiple yoğun bir çalışma sonucu ödül alan isimlerin belirlendiğini kaydeden Gürkan, akademi, iş dünyası, arkeoloji, edebiyat, finans, teknoloji gibi 17 farklı kategorilerde verildiğini açıkladı.
“Türk ve Amerikalı insanları bir araya getirerek bağları güçlendiriyoruz”
COO of TOA Consulting Group Başkanı Cemil Özyurt, “Bizim kültürümüzde ödüllendirmek çok yaygın bir şey değil. Ödüllendirmeyi çok seven bir kültüre sahip değiliz. Geçtiğimiz 3 yılda ABD’de başarılı olmuş Türkleri kadınları, gençleri ödüllendirdik. Bu yıl da hep Türk’e olmasın Amerikalı dostlarımızı ödüllendirelim dedik. 32 farklı kategoride 39 ödül alan dostumuz var. Bunlar akademiden, iş dünyasından tutun sanat, kültür gibi farklı alanlarda insanları ödüllendirdik. Burada asıl amacımız Türk ve Amerikalı insanları bir araya getirerek ilişkileri ve bir birleri arasındaki bağları güçlendirmektir. Aslında gönüllü olarak lobicilik yapıyoruz. Son dönemde ilişkilerimiz çok kötü. Düzelmesi için çabalar ve girişimler var ama lobiciliğimizin güçlenmesi için bu tarz etkinliklerle karar verici mekanizma üzerinde etkisi olan insanlara ulaşmamız lazım. ABD İçişleri Bakanının bugün bizimle birlikte olması çok önemlidir” ifadelerine yer verdi.
“Lobicilik faaliyetlerinin başında İsrail ve birkaç Asya ülkesi gelir”
Amerikan-Türk İş Geliştirme Konseyi (ATBD) Başkan Yardımcısı Dr. Kemal Oğuz Kalafat da Türk Of Amerika Dergisi’nin (TOA) çok eski bir kuruluş olduğunu belirterek, “Yıllardan beri kendisini öne çıkarmadan çok önemli işler yapan organizasyon. 15 Temmuz’dan önce güvendiğimiz bazı isimler gönlümüzden kayboldular. TOA her zaman Amerika’daki Türk toplumunu temsil eden lobicilik konusunda aktiviteleri olan ve takdir ettiğimiz kardeş kuruluşumuz” şeklinde konuştu.
Lobiciliğin önemine değinen Kalafat şunlara yer verdi:
“Lobicilik faaliyetlerinin başında İsrail ve birkaç Asya ülkesi gelir. Bu ülkelerin ABD’de yaşayan kişi ve kuruluşlarla derin ve maddi bağlarla birbirlerine bağlı olduğunu görüyoruz. Bir organizasyonun kurulması halinde ABD’de Türkiye’nin lobicilik faaliyetlerinin başarılı olacağına inanıyorum. 15 Temmuz’dan sonra Türkiye zor bir süreçten geçti. Türkiye hala bunun mücadelesini veriyor. Bu mücadelenin en önemli ayağından biri de ABD’de yapılıyor. Türk toplumunun içinden hançer gibi geçtiler. Türk toplumu toparlanmaya çalışıyor. Kimin ne olduğunu olmadığını anlamaya çalışıyor. Bundan sonra daha aktif şekilde lobicilik faaliyetlerinin başarılı olacağına inanıyorum.”
“Türk dostu Amerikalıların sayısı artırmamız lazım”
Gazeteci Razi Canikligil yaptığı konuşmada, “Türkiye’yi en iyi anlatacak insanlar, ülkemizi en iyi bilen Amerikalılar olur. Biz kendimizi anlatmaya kalkarsak ABD’lilerin ilgisini çekmeyebilir ve biraz daha şüpheyle bakabilirler. ABD’nin kendi vatandaşının bildiği ve güvendiği isimlerin ülkemizi görerek araştırarak yansıtması daha etkili olacaktır. Bu akşam burada bu konuda emek sarf eden ABD’lilere ödül verilerek onurlandırılıyorlar. Her alanda, Türkiye’yi tanıyan ve başarılı işler yapmış ABD’liler burada. Gördüklerini ve tecrübelerini burada rapor ediyorlar. Bazen kitap yazıyorlar, bazen televizyon programına katılıyorlar. En iyi tanıtım bu olacaktır. Bu insanların sayılarını artırmamız lazım. Türkiye’yi en iyi tanıtacak insanlar bunlar olacaktır” dedi.
Türk Mirası Organizasyonu Başkanı Ali Çınar, TOA Dergisinin ödül töreni Türk Dostu Amerikalılara verildiğini ifade ederek, “Farklı alanlarda Türk Amerikan ilişkilerini geliştirmek için uğraşan Türkiye’yi seven ve kaybedilmemesine inanan dostlarımıza atfedildi. ABD İçişleri Bakanının katılması geceye ayrı bir onur kattı” diye konuştu.
“Türkiye’den ABD’ye yerleşmiş ikinci jenerasyon bir şeyler yapmaya çalışıyor”
New Jersey eyaleti Paterson Belediye Başkan Yardımcısı Derya Taşkın, bir nevi lobicilik yaptıklarını söyleyerek, “ABD’de son zamanlarda göçmenlere ve ırkçılıkla olan olaylara karşı bizlerde bir adım atmaya çalışıyoruz. Bu noktada Türk Of Amerika Dergisi çok güzel bir adım attı. Türkiye’den ABD’ye yerleşmiş ikinci jenerasyon bir şeyler yapmaya çalışıyor. Eskiye göre çok önemli değişim var. Kongrede Türk dostluk gruplarına katılanların sayısı artıyor” şeklinde konuştu.
Turizm İşletmecisi Güngör Küçük ise Lobicilik anlamında Türk Of Amerika Dergisinin çok iyi işler yaptığını ifade ederek, “Bunlardan en önemlisi bu sene ki ‘Türkiye dostu Amerikalılara’ verilen ödül. Sadece TOA değil bütün Türklerinde bir araya gelerek Türkiye’yi tanıtmak için var gücümüzle çalışmalıyız” diye konuştu.
Ödül sahipleri, Türk-Amerikan toplumunun önde gelen isimlerin yer aldığı 18 kişilik jüri tarafından belirlendi. Jüri üyeleri arasında; TAİK Başkanı Mehmet Ali Yalçındağ, Turkish Heritage Organization Başkanı Ali Çınar, American Turkish Business Development Council Başkanı Uğur Terzioğlu, Türk-Amerikan İşadamları Derneği (TABA) Başkanı Ali Osman Akat, Golden Globe juri üyesi gazeteci Barbaros Tapan, Turkish Coalition of America Başkanı Lincoln McCurdy, Turkish Philanthropy Funds Başkanı Mehmet Kırdar, Demokratik Parti New American Caucus Başkanı işadamı, aktivist Murat Güzel, TACCI eski Başkanı ve Dünya Türk İş Konseyi ABD eski Başkanı Celal Seçilmiş, TAVAK Başkanı Prof Faruk Şen, müzisyen Fahir Atakoğlu, Türk-Amerikan Yönlendirme Komitesi Eş Başkanı Halil Mutlu, Türk Amerikan Bilimadamları ve Akademisyenleri Derneği (TASSA) Başkanı Prof Haluk Ünal, MÜSİAD USA Başkanı Mustafa Tuncer, Hürriyet Gazetesi New York temsilcisi Razi Canikligil gibi isimler yer aldı.
Türk Dostu Amerikalılara Toa Ödülleri Verildi NEW YORK (İHA) – ABD’de 2002’den beri yayınlanan tek Türk dergisi TURKOFAMERICA ve TOA Consulting tarafından bu yıl dördüncüsü düzenlenen TOA ödülleri sahiplerine verildi.
Paterson, Katherine. The Master Puppeteer. New York: Harper Trophy, 1975.
Sixth grade Honors Reading was the specter that loomed over all advanced readers in the Somerset Hills School District.  Sure, we could skate by until then, resting on our spelling and reading comprehension laurels, but once we got to sixth grade, all that would be over.  Then we would have Mrs. Ivey, who was known to give out (horror of horrors) C’s to A-students.  How could that be?  What could she possibly make us do?  Well, as it turned out, all she made us do was think.  The fact that we could summarize plots in neat paragraphs didn’t mean much to her.  When we read The Master Puppeteer in her class, she led us into a discussion of the arrogance of the main character, Jiro, who was attempting to weasel his way up through the ranks in the bunraku theater at which he was apprenticed.  “But he’s the main character!” the class protested.  “We’re supposed to root for him.  We like him!”  Mrs. Ivey assured us that she liked him, too.  “That doesn’t mean he’s not arrogant.”  I felt like I’d been struck by lightning.  A character – a main character even – could have flaws and failings, and we as readers could acknowledge that, and still like him.  And when I wrote, I could treat my characters the same way.  I cannot overstate the importance of Mrs. Ivey’s Reading class on my life.  I was only twelve when I left her, but I had begun to read like a writer.
