The Dead (1987). Gabriel Conroy and wife Gretta attend an early January dinner with friends at the home of his spinster aunts, an evening which results in an epiphany for both of them.
One of my favourite things about John Huston as a director is his ability to create a sense of lived-in intimacy between characters who sometimes don't particularly like each other, and that's really on show here. From all the warmth and bickering and petty grievances of the dinner party, to the powerfully affecting final act in Gabriel and Greta's bedroom. It just oozes a tenderness and empathy for these characters and their experiences, and its in that atmosphere I think that the movie really sings. The story's slight, but the emotions are big, and Anjelica Huston under her father's direction is a bit of magic. 8/10.

TAG GAME: List six of your favorite holiday movies in a poll so your followers can pick which movie they think best fits your vibe!
Because you might not know some of mine, and I want to increase the chances you'll be interested enough to watch them, I'm annotating below!
Christmas Eve on Sesame Street (1978, hourlong). Oscar tells Big Bird if he doesn't solve the mystery of how Santa Claus gets down a skinny NYC chimney, no one will get any presents. Bert and Ernie act out The Gift of the Magi. Cookie Monster tries to contact Santa to ask for cookies. Cute and surprisingly high-stakes, eminently quotable. (I can tell when my brother is watching it because he starts texting me lines.) And the song "True Blue Miracle" still slaps.
Desk Set, I have enthused about at length elsewhere. This is my favorite pairing of Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy because it's the one where the script agrees that Kate is perfect to begin with and doesn't need her edges taken off. Not technically a holiday movie, but the office holiday party is the most memorable scene of the film.
The Lion in Winter! Eleanor of Acquitaine is out of jail for Christmas and no one in the palace is having a good time. Katharine Hepburn and Peter O'Toole chew up the scenery and each other. Young Anthony Hopkins and Timothy Dalton are devastating. The script (in pentameter!) is a.ma.zing. The music is iconic in an of-its-era way. The acting is gorgeous. And you might feel better about your own dysfunctional family after.
There are so many iterations of A Christmas Carol! All appreciation to the Muppets, but my favorite is a made-for-TV 1984 film where George C. Scott plays Scrooge. Why? The Ghost of Christmas Present scenes! This adaptation turns on a dime from the party (Roger Rees playing Scrooge's nephew!) to the graveyard, in a way I've never found as chilling in any other adaptation. I won't spoil the details, but it still scares me.
Everyone's got a problematic fave, right? Heyyyy Auntie Mame. There are some scenes that haven't aged well. But also I would watch Rosalind Russell dramatically read the phone book while wearing a gown and a snappy hat. While only one scene is set at the winter holidays, the general tone of this movie is a holiday: it believes fervently in abundance and is generous at heart.
You've probably seen It's a Wonderful Life, you've probably read thinkpieces about it. You've maybe written them. Do I have notes? I do! (If the worst thing that could happen to me is that I am single and a librarian, I think that would be winning at life.) But I love that collective effort and community care win out over greed and malice.
Thanks to @roxyrondell for the invite! No pressure tags to @flameintobeing @some-anonymity-preferred @marbledwings @epersonae @as-a-creww @finethingswellworn and anyone else who would find it fun!

books I read in 2024
i read 185 books in 2024. it was an odd year for me, and though i know that this number of books is really impressive, reading often felt like a struggle this year. i set myself targets to read more out of my comfort zone but struggled with this, in particular to try and read more physical books, and ended up not meeting my target.
i think the big thing i'm taking away from reading this year is to read more of what i enjoy and accept dnf'ing books more, to be honest; i think i wasted time this year trying to get through books i wasn't enjoying and, ultimately, i'm not sure what the point of doing that is. next year i want to read things i enjoy, and though i still want to read more out of my comfort zone, i'm not going to set myself targets to read more physical books this year because i don't think format matters that much to me.
some other stats:
cassie mint was my most-read author for the second year in a row - thank goodness for her novellas!
my most-read genre was romance
i read 154 fiction books and 31 non-fiction books
i read 126 ebooks, 54 physical books and 5 audio books
i mostly read contemporary romance, with 81 books on my list
my most-read trope was, again, forced proximity, followed by hate-to-love
below is a list of the books i read this year. rereads are italicised, 5 star reads in bold.

Oh i loved Tauriel, such a nice surprise see her on your blog! Uhm I think the reason she was created is because there are no female characters in The Hobbit book, not a single one. Only Bilbo's mom is mentioned once in the first pages. No Galadriel, no Bard's girls, no women in Laketown. Zero. Even if Tauriel was made for Feminism... Uhm yes? So what?đ Little girls can see the movies and feel represented too? Oh no what a terrible feminist thing! You are right: people simply hate who disagree
Is this a different Tauriel fan?? Heh, donât thank me, thank that other anon. ^^
Sounds like a legit reason to me. And câmon, what is a fantasy film without a little romance? At least back then, that was the objective. I know that after Tauriel we got enough Elsas and Captain Marvels and the âI donât need no manâ rhetoric began (ok but GIRL, you could have a woman, a female love interest, I mean come on, donât pretend romance doesnât exist *at all* or that a romance makes you look weaker).Â
I remember my mom, who watched Lawrence of Arabia in the â60s, always said that it was hard for her to relate to that film because âthere were no female charactersâ. Obviously my teenage brain was screaming âHellz yeah, no women, who says I canât relate to a blond blue-eyed man who fights a war thatâs not his own?â, long before my adult brain screamed âHellz yeah, letâs ship Lawrence/Ali, WHO NEEDS WOMEN, RIGHT??â.Â
EXACTLY. Letâs face it, Hobbit was filmed with younger audiences in mind. And younger audiences = little girls looking for strong female role models with elfish ears. What little girl wouldnât love a strong female elf with bows and arrows!Â
Yeap, I did have my representation too and I *loved* it.Â
Canon or not Tauriel was cool, and let those haters hate.
