I have no idea if this is going to survive to the final version of this book, but one of my characters just keeps accidentally becoming a cat and none of it is intentional. First of all, her name is Kat. She was originally meant to be a role model for the protagonist, but as changes to the story made that unnecessary she started to shift into her best friend instead. The best friend of a witch, that is.

Then I started writing the scene introducing her, and in the first draft of this scene, she was nestled up in a little outcropping in the wall where she likes to sit, watching an ant crawling by. I decided this fit better with the current story and decided to make her personality more lethargic/curious (uh oh don't wanna kill her) rather than active/cool. Then she gets up and does a big stretch. But then I realized that the place she was supposed to be wouldn't make sense for her to be in, so I decided to have her outside, but I still wanted the part where she sits weird, so I decided to have her sitting up in a tree, sort of laying across multiple branches.

But then, as I pictured that position, I thought, "I don't know how I'd get down from there." So I had the idea that maybe that's why she's waiting so long in this uncomfortable position, because she can't get down, and she needs the protagonist to come help her down from the tree.

So now Kat's stuck in a tree.
