François J. Bonnet & Stephen O’Malley — Cylene (Editions Mego)
Cylene by François J. Bonnet & Stephen O'Malley
If François Bonnet and Stephen O’Malley shared cultural coordinates rooted in 1970s American TV, they might allow themselves to be called The Odd Couple. Bonnet, who usually records under the name Kassel Jaeger, applies the spirit of studious inquiry that guides musique concrète to work that can usually be described as ambient; O’Malley, on his own and with Sunn 0))), magnifies the brute power of metal by raising the volume and slowing the pace as much as possible.
You might figure that there is no way that these guys could work together, but in fact, they’ve already been doing so for years. Bonnet is the director of Ina GRM, France’s publicly funded center of electro-acoustic research, and among his responsibilities is keeping the institution’s work in the public eye. To that end he has overseen the release of vinyl editions of work by Luc Ferrari, François Bayle, and others, all enclosed in covers designed by O’Malley. They just haven’t done anything that you can hear — until Cylene.
Their chemistry isn’t as oil and vinegary as Oscar and Felix’s, but it’s not a smooth blend, either. O’Malley’s loud, patiently paced guitar sounds like it wants to ring out, fly across some dusk valley, and echo back at you just after the sun comes down. And if he had played these licks on his own, that’s exactly what they would do. But Bonnet does not let it be that easy. Sometimes his influence manifests in subliminal drones, which shift and flex under O’Malley’s playing like low, rolling hills under a high-flying airplane. Other times his presence is like a fog, damp and retarding but impossible to put your hands upon. On “Erosion Always Wins,” Bonnet’s synthesized sounds seem to loom in front of O’Malley’s rumble, like a lit-up cathedral spire towering over the town square’s receding, nocturnal murk. Their interaction is like a dance of obstruction and erosion, which with each thwarted step wanders further into a thicket that seems thick and impassible, but suddenly glows with eerie beauty when the moon rises.
