I posted some pictures of my grandmother's extensive 1940s indian embroidery reference manuals on my knitting account......caption and context under the cut:
These were written when she was about 16 or 17 and living in Pune, India in the 1940s. Her technical college taught machine and hand sewing and after she got married and moved out of the city, she used these to hold classes for other women in her village. You can see how old these are by how difficult it is for me to turn the pages 🥲
It's hard to tell in the picture but the stitch diagrams are so clear that anyone can pick them up. We didn't know these existed until we found them among her belongings last month after she passed.....i really want to scan and upload them fully somewhere.....it IS a little piece of history after all. What's really cool are the samples in here specific to Indian embroidery like the Kashida pattern. There's so much textile history in that country that not a lot of people are aware of.
My grandmother was the only crafter in my family and im lucky to have been able to talk with her about my projects as well. I made her that shawl last year and it's different gifting something to someone who has not only known how long they take, but who created little tiny sweater patterns for dolls when she was a teenager. I'm not great at sewing but finding these makes me want to try and stitch my way through her books....like a Julie and Julia thing but with embroidery I guess.....things like this should be shared! 🧡

This exquisite work of art, using needle and thread, adds narratives to the fabric and patterns that can range from a single petal of a flower to the depiction of the regal loom. The beauty of embroidery is in the detail and individuality it brings to each item.
A Glimpse into History
This beautiful art of sewing has been an integral part of Islamic art and is used widely in royal clothing and accessories, furnishing, utensils, and items used in regular households, among other things. Old exceptional artistry such as Zari (metallic thread work), Phulkari (flower work), and Kashida (long elegant motifs) is passing from one generation to another. Every embroidered lawn suit stitch has a history and era behind it.
Current adaptations of traditional models
In the modern age, designers combine these old methods with new fashion styles to create beautiful Eid women's outfits. Wearing embroidered formal dresses is not only being loyal to one's traditions but also being aesthetically refined. Rich fabrics, intricate designs, motifs, and embroidered outfits are appropriate for any kind of Eid event, whether a close-knit family or a large-scale gathering.

All these outfits are usually embellished with extremely fine zari, mirrors, chickenkari and beads to transform them into works of art that add that extra sparkle and richness to your Eid formal dresses.

Trick or Treat!
For you my friend.
A treat 😊
Got nothing written up sooo oc trivia we go.
My oc, Bee from The Allico Project is really good at sewing and mending things.
Part of is because she was brainwashed.
But before it all, her Nani (grandma on her mums side) taught her how.
Bee's family originates from Pakistan, from a village in Kashmir. A place known for its textiles.
And embroidery.
Which Bee's Nani was well versed in. Sewing embroidery on shawls and other clothing items throughout her life to support her family.
This style of embroidery being called Kashida embroidery.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Something she passed on to her daughter and Bee.
And while Bee doesn't remember any of this, she takes to embroidery like an old friend.
It's a skill she has ingrained into her whether she recalls it or not.

Kashida is the traditional name of Kashmiri embroidery, which came with the Persians, just as the motifs and style suggest much of Persian influence. The work is very colourful and derives its designs from elements in the scenic beauty of the land. This craft, mostly done by men, is said to have descended from royal patronage. Kashmiri embroidery is said to go through many skilled hands before completion. No single piece is ever done wholly by one person. The various threads and raw materials too are sourced from various places, and put together to form vibrant patterns. Yarns and/or plain shawls, which are dyed and treated are distributed for embroidering. The work is carried about privately in households or in groups at the Karkhanas / workshops. Which are Famous Indian Embroidery Styles?
Indian Embroidery Styles:  Embroidery styles are one of the highlights of of Indian artistic traditions. The old Indian fashion comprises such a huge variety of fabrics, threads, stitches, and motifs that a person interested in it would simply be left awestruck in the end. The embroidery styles, exclusive of each region give a very good brief about the richness of the country and the hard work of the communities who have been practicing them for generations.  The popular Indian embroidery styles are:
Chikankari of Lucknow: Straight from the land of Tehzeeband Nazaquat, Chikankari is delicate, intricate embroidery that has been introduced by Nur Jahan, the wife Mughal emperor, Jahangir. A chicken fabric is created by bloc printing particular patterns on it. Craftsmen then embroider the stitches along with the pattern and finally when it is done, the fabric is washed to remove the traces of the print.
Tumblr media
Which are Famous Indian Embroidery Styles?
Phulkari of Punjab: Besides Sarson da saag and make di roti, Punjab is also famous for its Phulkari embroidery. The stitches are embroidered on the back of the cloth so that the design takes place in the front. The contrast of colorful stitches on a subtle background gives a very outstanding look.
Kashida of Kashmir: Since farming is not possible in harsh winters of Kashmir, this embroidery became a source of daily bread for people in Kashmir. The embroidery is mainly done on fabrics such as wool and silk. The craftsmen there stitch the beautiful scenes inspired by nature rather than any animal or human figure.
Gota Patti of Rajasthan: The thin strips of gold or silver ribbons are hand-stitched on the patterns or motifs made on the fabric. The embroidery is famous of Rajasthan and typically found over lehengas, odhnis, sarees, shawls, and even turbans.
Zardozi: Said to exist from the time of Rigveda, the zardozi embroidery is not of some particular region or state, rather it is known as embroidery of India. In this embroidery, the craftsmen fill in the elaborate designs with gold and silver threads. The magnificence is amplified when pearls and precious stones are added further. However, because of the scarcity of metals, the copper wire with gold and silver finish is used nowadays.

Kashmiri or Kashida Embriodery
Kashmiri or Kashida Embriodery Kashmiri embroidery(also Kashida) is used for phirans (woollen kurtas) and namdahs (woollen rugs)as well as stoles. It draws inspiration from nature. Birds, blossoms and flowers, creepers, chinar leaves, ghobi, mangoes, lotus, and trees are the most common themes. The entire pattern is made with one or two embroidery stitches, and mainly chain stitch on a base of silk, wool and cotton: the colour is usually white, off-white or cream but nowadays one can find stoles and salwar-kameez sets in many other colours such as brown, deep blue, sky blue, maroon and rani pink. Kashida is primarily done on canvas with crystal threads, but Kashida also employs pashmina and leather threads. Apart from clothes, it’s found on home furnishings like bed spreads, sofa and floor cushions, and pillow covers. The base cloth, whether wool or cotton, is generally white or cream or a similar shade. Pastel colors are also often used. The craftsmen use shades that blend with the background. Thread colors are inspired by local flowers. Only one or two stitches are employed on one fabric.Papier maché’ embroidery. Here flowers and leaves are worked in the satin stitch and employ the bright colors that are found in papier maché objects. Each motif is then outlined in black. This design is employed either in broad panels on both sides of a shawl or on the entire surface of a stole. The final effect of this type of embroidery looks translucent and has a “stained-glass work” look.
