Scanner Room
2014 Kinetic, site specific installation designed for Centre of Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle LED, aluminum, engine 760 x 740 x 480 cm
Installation designed specifically for the gallery space that engulfs this space completely, creating an environment constructed by light and filled with it. The form is minimalist, its most important element is a constant, monochrome flow of light that materializes and diffuses itself subsequently. Space has been created for people to be inside it, and in this case, the visible is only the beginning of an individual experience that may be coloured with different emotions and states of consciousness.
Usually, scanning is used to represent images or to read encoded, written messages. Therefore, overexposure to light may be treated as a kind of a potential introspection, a state of concentration, a meeting and exchange with one’s own self. Its intensity develops with time and may get you close to meditation, but it can also take the form of a momentary flash of light, a transient feeling or image.

Hypnotizing
Fashion designer Iris van Herpen took inspiration from artist Anthony Howe's kinetic sculptures when creating this series of delicate and hypnotic garments for Paris Haute Couture Week. Light materials and light colors create a dreamy effect, while lines with small spacing give people a feeling of confusion and vertigo.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/d8b5b72fb40280a56e917dfde31753fe/40466111d522dd1e-32/s540x810/9379bfc247b59899773ce77ad2691f7eb096455f.jpg)
2. With his hypnotic room installations, renowned Austrian artist Peter Kogler transforms ordinary spaces and molds architecture into surreal environments for spectators.Although it is in a simple cubic space, the artist changes the density and curvature of the lines to make the space appear three-dimensional and has a sense of vertigo.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/fb5c13b2dccec86665818425f47cdbc4/40466111d522dd1e-a6/s540x810/1ba80f5b0c7369a78315cf3f8345f80c54785904.jpg)
3. This installation art is divided into two parts, one part is the "dance" of water brought by the water waves generated by the audience's walking, and in the other area, a large water projection device is placed on top of these metal containers, which were designed by Lachlan Turczan The water "domesticated" by sound waves projects a dreamy and hypnotic effect. I can imagine lying on the couch under the unit watching the water ripple, feeling sleepy with the dim light.

4. The work I chose from Nick Thomm uses vivid colors, but because it is in a dark environment and has flowing animations, it is easy to think of flowing time. Thereby ignoring the concept of time and achieving the purpose of hypnosis.
vimeo
5. “Memoria,” directed by Apichatpong Weerasethakul (“Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives”), takes the attention to sound even further. The film flows at a glacial pace with minimal action and constructs the entirety of its plot, emotion, and personality around a recurring low-register, booming sound. As a viewer, I was simultaneously kept in a relaxed state by the slow, thoughtful cinematography and quiet, minimal sound ambiance, while also being extremely anxious by the unpredictable moments when that calm would be shattered by the sound of an explosion.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/763d4015918cfdadf77a3572ea42a21f/40466111d522dd1e-2a/s540x810/62cfe2b0e982b8074b394d1eef682121e9439033.jpg)
6. Anthony McCall, widely known for his ‘solid-light works’ — which he first experimented with in 1973 — generates volumetric forms composed of beams of projected light. The installation explores human perception through spatial audiovisual composition, exploring the boundaries between the material and the immaterial through autonomous installations and live performances. The resulting intuitive experience, a co-creation of artist and viewer, creates a hypnotic environment for the subconscious.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/3cda4fe00a3c365d76b114a0312b17a4/40466111d522dd1e-2e/s540x810/31cad984c65e9837307c54a984e9e41c267219ad.jpg)
7. Visitors enter the space one at a time through an opening in the container floor. When viewers arrive indoors, they are completely surrounded by small sound-generating systems as thousands of paper sounds—creaks, whispers, rustles, and crackles—develop and fuse into an all-encompassing audio choreography. This reminds me of white noise, there are many sounds that can make people sleepy, and it is also a means of treating insomnia.
vimeo
8. Boreal Halo is inspired by the Northern Lights in hand. Leroy built a white ring, 10 meters in diameter, that hovered above the ground and spun gently. As the structure rotates, open spaces are created where viewers can walk in and interact with the work from different angles. This device that slows down the perception of time and breaks down movement establishes a space that is both mysterious and hypnotic.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/3636b3f88d0157932cf81b4753b350b5/40466111d522dd1e-1b/s540x810/9d85371cc82ec5537638512fc5094f7f102ff298.jpg)
9. Polish artist Karolina Halatek’s work characteristically uses light to create experiential site-specific spaces that seamlessly incorporate visual, architectural, and sculptural elements. Seeing her work primarily as a catalyst for the experience. When people stand in her installations, a multi-sensory experience blends together, working together to perform hypnotic and psychedelic functions.
vimeo
10. The artist designed a space where viewers can freely use props to create their own sensory experience or feel different finished white noises. In the middle of the pavilion, there is also a large, soft, long, spiral sofa, like a brain structure, where ASMR videos are played, and viewers can lie on it freely and enter an ingenious ASMR journey with headphones. I really appreciate this kind of multi-sensory works. Since people have multiple senses, they interact with each other to restore a more real experience.

Hypnosis is a human condition involving focused attention, reduced peripheral awareness, and an enhanced capacity to respond to suggestions. There are competing theories explaining hypnosis and related phenomena. If someone hypnotizes you, they put you into a state in which you seem to be asleep but can still see, hear, or respond to things said to you. Hypnosis is not a state of near-sleep but is manipulated by human intervention.
From my research, I realized that hypnosis is a therapeutic technique. A trained and certified hypnotist or hypnotherapist guides you into this deep state of focus and relaxation with verbal cues, repetition, and imagery. Most people remember everything that happens during hypnosis. There are some misconceptions about hypnosis. Some people think that when you are hypnotized, you will lose consciousness or memory. Actually, you remain aware of who you are, and where you are and remember what happened during a hypnosis session.
I would like to make a multi-sensory experience device that combines sound and light. Although I am not a professional hypnotist, my purpose is to deal with stress and anxiety through hypnosis. Bring people into a state of extreme relaxation by attracting their attention.

1. Portals, Mareo Rodriguez
An exhibition series
Mareo Rodriguez's installations exemplify the sublime experience through a masterful use of intricate and ever-shifting light, harmoniously blending materials, nature, and space to create captivating and dynamic artworks.
In an interview, Rodriguez eloquently expressed that his artistic endeavors serve as a profound homage to nature. In doing so, he has delved into contemplation, provoking profound inquiries about physical and geological phenomena, material states, and their transformative processes.
Through his art, Rodriguez aims to evoke a specific element that captivates him—the presence of the divine. This fascination is interconnected with the sublime experience, which arises from the profound connection between the soul's memory and its harmonious relationship with nature. Thus, his installations become a conduit for feedback, fostering a sense of profound communion with the natural world.
Personally, I think the concept of harnessing the power and beauty of natural elements like lighting and thunderstorms to evoke the sublime experience aligns perfectly with my appreciation for art that pays homage to nature. This idea represents a seamless integration of artistic expression and the raw, awe-inspiring forces of the natural world, creating a unique opportunity to connect with the environment on a profound level is something I wish to achieve as well, and I have also mentioned that I wanted to focus on lighting/thunderstorms as one of my projects.

The sculptural installation Beacon, created by Karolina Halatek, presents a mesmerising and immersive experience through the brilliance of a towering white light pillar, symbolically bridging the celestial and terrestrial realms. This artwork embodies the concept of the sublime, capturing the profound and awe-inspiring relationship between heaven and earth.
The simplicity of its form and the purity of the white light emanating from the installation evoke a sense of mystery while instilling a calming effect on those who approach it. The combination of awe-inspiring scale and calming luminosity creates a unique emotional experience, leading viewers to a contemplative state that transcends the ordinary.Through "Beacon," Karolina Halatek invites viewers to encounter the sublime, offering a space where the boundaries between the celestial and the earthly converge, inviting contemplation, and providing a refuge from the outside world.
Luca Barberis also discussed two enhancers of the sublime experience in ‘The Aesthetics and Design Principles of the Sublime Experience’: brightness and novelty. Brightness intensifies the six sublime features(presence, contrast, movement etc), making them more prominent and emotionally evocative. Novelty is crucial in sustaining the potential for sublime experiences, as familiarity with a landscape can diminish its impact. (Barberis, 2022) The combination of brightness and novelty enriches the emotional impact of an experience, allowing individuals to encounter the sublime in new and profound ways. Where in Karolina’s work, both are achieved seamlessly and well presented.
When I first found this installation, I can envision feeling amazed as I stand before the artwork, captivated by the simplicity of its form yet struck by the purity and brilliance of the white light. The combination of the artwork's awe-inspiring scale and the calming luminosity it emits creates a unique emotional experience, enveloping you in a sense of wonder and contemplation.
3. The exaction of the Sublime, Yibing He
CG Animation
youtube
‘The Exaction of the Sublime’ is a 3D experimental short film that delves into our intricate connection with the technological sublime amidst the ever-expanding and unpredictable technological landscape of the modern world. The film utilizes innovative and surreal 3D animation to create mesmerizing and visually stunning landscapes. The captivating and awe-inspiring visuals immerse the viewers in a world that is both familiar and yet beyond comprehension, eliciting a sense of wonder and grandeur characteristic of the sublime.
I selected this particular CG animation because it stands out from the other examples I've encountered. Its unique style and presentation have sparked my inspiration to explore animation further, and possibly using Blender as a tool to bring my creative visions to life through captivating visuals and animations.
4. Spleen and Ideal, Carlos Schwabe
oil on canvas, 1907, 146 x 97 cm
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/ca64a6d4fcc306c3a0a201ba9ce821c4/548e5082f356b057-1c/s640x960/2f83d55a667bf06e7e357439b244e7e5b2925743.jpg)
In this evocative artwork, Schwabe presents a rather explicit depiction of two figures engaged in intimate union within the tumultuous embrace of a breaking wave. The composition seemingly captures the pinnacle moment of climax, intensifying the emotional intensity of the scene. The juxtaposition of the figure 'on top,' a male-like angel with pristine white wings, and the figure 'below,' adorned with female breasts but obscured facial features, creates an intriguing duality of gender and identity, hinting at the complexities of desire and human nature.
Schwabe skillfully employs his artistic mastery to evoke a sense of the sublime in this painting. The grandiosity of the breaking wave, symbolizing the uncontrollable forces of nature, heightens the dramatic intensity of the scene, transporting viewers to a realm of heightened emotion and sensory experience. The juxtaposition of the divine-like angel and the earthly female figure blurs the boundaries between the spiritual and the earthly, inviting contemplation on the divine-human connection and the enigmatic realms of desire and ecstasy.
The depiction of intimate passion amid the chaotic forces of nature, coupled with the enigmatic presence of the serpent, creates an amalgamation of emotions that challenge and transcend conventional norms. The viewer is immersed in a state of awe and wonder, confronted with the vastness and complexity of human emotions, desires, and existential mysteries.
The concept of the sublime in art is vast and intriguing. Nevertheless, when I visit museums and exhibitions, I often find myself not experiencing the true sense of the sublime. The predictability and limited scale of the artworks tend to dampen the impact. However, when I encountered this particular painting, I was immediately captivated by its ability to juxtapose the figures with their surrounding environment. This unique aspect, to me, perfectly captures the essence of the sublime in traditional art.
5. The Great Animal Orchestra, Bernie Krause & United Visual Artists
Installation
Stepping into an immersive audiovisual experience, we are captivated by the awe-inspiring richness of our planet's biodiversity. Over the past five decades, Bernie Krause's remarkable collection of over 5,000 hours of natural environment recordings has granted us access to the sublime tapestry of life, encompassing at least 15,000 species of land and marine creatures from all corners of the globe.
As a trained musician, Krause's revelation that the sounds of animals in nature echo the harmonies and orchestrations of a grand musical ensemble adds a layer of sublime wonder to the experience. His sonic landscapes unveil the unique acoustic niches that each species occupies within its ecosystem. However, the intrusion of human activities threatens to mute these majestic wildlife symphonies, eliciting a profound sense of loss and contemplation on the fleeting beauty of the natural world.
In a powerful union with United Visual Artists (UVA), Krause transforms these awe-inspiring recordings into animated spectrograms, transporting us deep into the heart of these untamed soundscapes. This immersive fusion of sound and vision magnifies the sublime grandeur of nature's orchestra, invoking a sense of profound awe and reverence for the intricate interconnectedness of life.
The concept of harmoniously merging the sounds of countless species from our planet into a unified composition is truly awe-inspiring. When I immersed myself in the experience and listened to the piece, I felt an indescribable connection with the vast array of sounds that represent the richness of the natural world. It's a remarkable and moving testament to the wondrous diversity of life on Earth.
6. boreal halo, Vincent Leroy
temporary installation, inflatable, cables, electric motor, 2020, 8m
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/f9d508d25acfdedcce95ad2da702c709/548e5082f356b057-dc/s540x810/9f907f6cefdd68fe9683d5be31735ac050ce91c0.jpg)
French artist and sculptor, Vincent Leroy, ingeniously crafted the artwork "Boreal Halo" within the hallowed walls of a 17th-century church in Arles, France. This installation aspires to create a sublime tableau, captivating viewers with its enchanting interplay of reflections, shadows, and sounds. The rays of light filtering through the church's stained glass windows, seemingly emanating from afar like a gentle dream, further enhance the ethereal quality of the experience.
Leroy's mastery in previous works is evident in the rotating halo, evoking a profound "time dilation" and "spatial division." Suspended above the ground, it hovers mysteriously in mid-air, its support structure cunningly concealed from view, infusing an air of surrealism into the overall encounter.
Adding another layer to the immersive experience, Jerome Echenoz curated a soundscape derived from diverse corners of the world for this particular project. Alongside the resonating hum of the low-pitched cello and pulsating vibrations, the background music contributes an additional audio dimension, elevating the overall visual encounter to a sublime symphony of the senses.
In article ‘The Aesthetics and Design Principles of the Sublime Experience’, Barberis presents the argument that for a visual experience to evoke the sublime, it should achieve a sense of stillness and calm in the viewer, allowing them to intensely focus for an extended period. They refer to this state as ‘intense-focus-in-calm’. (Barberis, 2022) Leroy's artistic expertise, particularly evident in the rotating halo, contributes to the experience of ‘time dilation’ and ‘spatial division’, which enhances the sublime atmosphere.
7. Chapel on the water, Tadao Ando, (1988), Hokkaido, Japan.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/953120b1251c1862de43e3ddab11d37d/548e5082f356b057-f0/s540x810/a3d4e3db86321202c37cc5528cfac74040bd1fcc.jpg)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/8e9f9b277c9804493f993bc3ca57f33f/548e5082f356b057-6f/s540x810/80d3378da75f33d542b6b485aa9e0f9980ea35aa.jpg)
The design of the Chapel, with its minimalist and abstract geometric shapes, evokes a sense of awe and wonder, characteristic of the sublime. The use of simple materials like concrete and glass to create a tranquil atmosphere further adds to the sublime experience, where the grandeur of nature and the spiritual elements converge. The interplay of natural light, brought in through the transparent glass walls, enhances the sublime quality of the space, inviting contemplation and a profound connection with the surroundings. Simultaneously, the glass cross represents light and humanity.
Tadao Ando has always been one of my favorite architects, and exploring his art never fails to bring me a sense of calm and peace, a distinct feeling that sets it apart from everything else, yet can be undeniably described as 'sublime.'
8. The Weather Project, Olafur Eliasson
Through the interplay of light and shadows, Eliasson weaves a fantastical reality that captivates the senses. Eliasson constructs a vast spatial model featuring a semi-circular light installation within an expansive space. Mirrors artfully reflect the other half, forming a complete circle, while artificial mist and monochromatic yellow light conjure an ethereal dream-like illusion. The brilliance of this masterpiece transports the sun into the turbine hall, creating a breathtaking spectacle—a giant sunset—crafted through the enchanting refraction of light and shadows.
As viewers lie down on the floor, their reflections become visible in the mirrors on the ceiling, prompting profound contemplation—is that truly me? Eliasson's message resonates with the sublime, delving into the intricate relationship between space and self and questioning the potential for self-influence on the environment.
Eliasson's artful manipulation of colorus and perception highlights the significance of art in impacting our minds. He reminds us that our brains are easily deceived, and each color exerts a unique influence — a revelation that underlines the profound power of art.
In Barberis' paper, they also stated the concept of Shanti in the Bhagavad Gita and Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, suggesting that the sublime is a sensory-induced state akin to Shanti achieved through meditation practices, where certain visual triggers provoke a decrease in thoughts and emotions, allowing the sublime experience to arise and bring the participant closer to an ecstatic moment. Through the interplay of light and shadows, Eliasson's artwork captivates the senses and prompts profound contemplation, similar to how meditation and Shanti bring peace and calm to the mind. (Barberis, 2022) Just as meditation practice quiets mental activities and allows the discovery of the true self, the sublime experience in Eliasson's installation emerges by provoking a decrease of thoughts and emotions, bringing participants closer to an ecstatic moment. A few commented that the experience felt like a meditation.
9. MIST, Marguerite Humeau

Marguerite Humeau combines art, science, and technology in her creative endeavors. She explores the mythical power of scientific narratives and their impact on fostering a broader understanding of the world. In her works, she narrates fictional events, such as the reemergence of extinct prehistoric creatures or other extraordinary beings. Through the relationship between visuals and sounds, the artist deconstructs and elucidates scientific knowledge, repositioning our comprehension of the surrounding world.
‘There’s always some kind of horrific twist, be it artificial skin, or the fact that some of the models appear to be breathing. I’m doing that intentionally to create a kind of sublime experience, a feeling of being exhilarated and frightened at the same time.’ said Humeau.
10. RENDER, Takaaki morita
Installation, 2018
RENDER, an experimental installation crafted from 20 sheets of organic display electroluminescence, intricately links with the concept of the sublime. Its primary focus lies in exploring the perception of "seeing things that cannot actually be seen." Through the incorporation of natural world footage like rain, wind, and lightning, alongside three-dimensional audio reconstructions using natural sound fragments, the artwork ventures into the realm of the unseen, the elusive, and the awe-inspiring.
The installation's intent is to evoke a newfound sense of depth, enticing viewers to reimagine the unseen elements that lie between each display. By presenting fragmented three-dimensional visuals across multiple displays, RENDER invites exploration not only from the front but from all angles in 3D space. This immersive experience profoundly stimulates the viewer's imagination, prompting them to fill in the gaps with their minds and create a vivid mental landscape.
11. LAGEOS Darren Cunningham and London Contemporary Orchestra
Experimental/Mordern Classical, 2018
youtube
In this collaborative sound track that ingeniously merges electronic music and classical music, a captivating connection to the concept of the sublime can be determined. The fusion of seemingly contrasting genres evokes a sense of awe and wonder, akin to the profound emotions often associated with the sublime experience.
This audacious blend of innovation and tradition, daringly explores the intersection of musical realms, inspires a sense of transcendence and elevation of the spirit. The captivating tapestry of sounds becomes a vessel for the sublime, stirring profound emotions and leaving a lasting impact on the audience.
Moreover, the ambiguity and blurred lines between electronic and acoustic spaces create a sense of the unknown, a feeling often associated with the sublime. The music envelops the listeners in an immersive experience, where they find themselves suspended between the familiar and the unfamiliar, the conventional and the avant-garde.
Audio is an area where I lack specialization, making examples like this invaluable for my research. These instances broaden my understanding and expose me to a diverse range of works to contemplate and explore further.
12. 天坛 Temple of Heaven
Place of worship, 1420, Beijing
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/e79b1d87cc8d5699afeaecaf4f1d8c5b/548e5082f356b057-0a/s540x810/3033cfa6b1e58eca913ac27cd6f0abe222b2c8ee.jpg)
The Temple of Heaven exudes an undeniable sense of the sublime, captivating visitors with its grandeur and sacred atmosphere. As i once steped to this ancient religious complex, i was transported back in time to a realm of awe and wonder, experiencing the profound emotions often associated with the sublime.
The monumental architecture, meticulously designed with symmetrical precision and adorned with blue-glazed tiles symbolizing the boundless sky, evokes a sense of transcendence and elevation of the spirit. The vastness of the temple's open spaces and the towering structures reaching towards the heavens create a feeling of insignificance in the face of the grand cosmic order, generating a sense of awe and reverence.
The Temple of Heaven's connection to rituals and ceremonies performed by emperors adds to its aura of the sacred and sublime. The significance of these rituals and the belief in the divine mandate of the emperors to communicate with Heaven amplify the sense of the extraordinary and the divine presence within the site.
Moreover, the historical and cultural context surrounding the temple enhances its sublime nature. The Temple of Heaven is not merely a physical structure but a living embodiment of ancient Chinese beliefs, philosophies, and values. Its rich tapestry of meanings and symbolic representations intertwines with the vastness of its architecture, igniting contemplation about the human connection to the cosmos and the mysteries of existence.
The sublime experience at the Temple of Heaven lies not only in its physical attributes but also in the emotions it stirs within those who visit. It invites a sense of humility and wonder, encouraging individuals to reflect on their place in the universe and the profound mysteries of life. As visitors immerse themselves in the solemnity and sacredness of the site, they encounter a transcendent experience that transcends time and space, leaving an indelible impression on their hearts and minds.
This architecture holds a special place in my heart as it was one of the few places I visited frequently during my early childhood and possibly my first encounter with the feeling of 'sublime.' When discussing the topic, it is one of the first memories that comes to my mind.

Karolina Halatek, Scanner Room, 2014,Kinetic, site specific installation designed for Centre of Contemporary Art, Ujazdowski Castle, LED, aluminum, engine, 760 x 740 x 480 cm
