This is an interesting one... The team has the option to change Sauron back into Lykos, but he claims that is as good as killing him, and Logan decides that is fair and just... lets him go.

This line is amusing with the hindsight of Xavier being played by Patrick Stuart in the live-action movies.

Marvel's Sauron, but his pterosaur mutation evokes an azhdarchid instead of the more conventional pterodactyloid. I don't think Spider-Man is happy any which way.

THE BIG REVEAL IN A THREE-PART STORY ARC -- WELCOME TO THE SAVAGE LAND, KIDS.
PIC INFO: Resolution at 770x1215 -- Spotlight on the concluding page, and the big reveal as to who the big bad was in this issue, none other than #Sauron, of course, from "WOLVERINE" Vol. 2 #69. May, 1993. Marvel Comics.
Anyway, I guess the head honchos over at Marvel decided to give ol' "beak face" an update for the '90s, hence the armored claws, feet, and "crown" he's donning here, but, personally, he remains a character who truly needs none of these trappings to make a point, and the torn pants and/or "jungle loin cloth" both work just as well for. Still remains a killer reveal, though, all in all.
Story: Larry Hama
Penciler: Dwayne Turner
Inker: Chris Ivy
Colorist: Steve Buccellato
Letterer: Pat Brosseau

Wolverine's design, or i should say his stature and body shape, seem to fluctuate often, but he is very much built like a brick shithouse in these books...

SAURON (MARVEL) IS GLORIOUS Pt 1
Quick intro for those who aren't familiar - Sauron is the name chosen by the scientist Karl Lykos when he turned himself into a dinosaur. That's right, he's the guy who doesn't want to cure cancer because he's a Dino supremacist.
Tumblr media
He chose Sauron as a Tolkien fan
He must be so much fun to write. In addition to the who and what, he also has very strong opinions and a deep commitment to drama and histrionics. No time for Spider-Man's bullshit either.
Tumblr media
Dude has crazy beef with birds in general but especially seagulls.
Tumblr media
Lol, cowards. Also he rented that sailor suit and I'm so here for it.
Tumblr media
See! I'd be pissed off too but I probably wouldn't be courting disaster by beefing with seagulls needlessly. No judgement though. After all, what's the worst that could happen from joining up with an ecoterrorist that can talk to animals/the Earth, and a small pink child that has to cause others pain to stay alive? Namor, apparently.
Tumblr media
See? Best lines ever.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sauron DGAF tho. He's always ready to throw hands, or claws, or wings.
Tumblr media
More bird hatred, this time chickens. Also pictured - a love of sedition.
Tumblr media
A good question, Curse! (The answer is yes, I'm pretty sure.) Sauron is clearly a purist where evolution is concerned, and maybe being unfair to birds that don't have access to Saurianization technology. Oh well, we stan a consistent and passionate king.
Next time, the hidden depths of Sauron and his quest for love.

X-Men 60 (September 1969)
Roy Thomas/Neal Adams
It's still the Neal Adams show around here as we leave behind the Sentinels of the last few issues and introduce an exceedingly strange villain, Dr Karl Lykos, who we see in this wonderfully Hammer Horror set of panels as he prepares to treat Alex Summers/Havok, to help him get his mutant powers under control.
Tumblr media
While this is happening we finally get a bit of downtime after the relentless rush of the last few issues, and you know what downtime means: Danger Room training and casual misogyny!
Tumblr media
We also get - god, this is so funny - we get a little jump to the villains who were temporarily detained by the Sentinels last time, and look, the Vanisher is there! They totally forgot him last issue and then put him back in with a little footnote! This is adorable.
Tumblr media
Anyway, guess what, Dr Karl Lykos is evil. We learn the fairly silly details of this in a typically unreal Adams two-page spread that invents like seven different kinds of panel.
Tumblr media
The details are baffling and not important, but it turns out that as a child Lykos was attacked by pterodactyls while hiking and has been haunted by visions of them ever since, but that he craves mutant power over people's minds, and that the exercising of that power turns him into a pterodactyl. I told you the details weren't important.
Tumblr media
What's important, obviously, is the art. At this point this is fully just an issue of a horror comic that tangentially features the X-Men.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The thing is, though, that however good the art is, the result is goofy as hell, and it becomes even goofier when he adopts the name Sauron as an homage to Tolkein (??). This is such a weird decision, and ultimately this combined with his silly look means that Sauron, pterodactyl villain, is much less interesting than Dr Karl Lykos, evil psychiatrist. But it's Sauron that the X-Men must now deal with, if they ever show up in their own book again.

So I just read Uncanny X-Men no. 100 for the first time and I think now is a good time for me to recap what's happened to Alex so far at this point in the continuity:
Kidnapped by the Living Pharaoh & put in a tight little skirt because they have a Mystical Connection™️; his powers manifest and he feels unlovable as a result. (UXM #54-56)
Kidnapped by Larry Trask after running away into the desert to angst about his powers. Trask uses Lorna (& the promise of potentially being able to control his powers) to manipulate him into becoming his...lackey? Trask's purpose is unclear. Trask then gives Alex his mutant name and first costume, and then, upon discovering his own mutanthood, winds up trying to save Alex from potential death, going into a catatonic state when he seems to have failed. (UXM #57-60)
Gets hurt and the X-Men take him to Dr. Karl Lykos, who drains Alex's life force, which acts as the catalyst for Lykos's initial werepterosaur transformation and adoption of the identity of Sauron. Meanwhile, Lorna gets horny about Alex while he's passed out. (UXM #60)
His intelligence is questioned when he appears to have a plan to fight some aliens, and he agrees he isn't smart enough. He also serves mostly as a catalyst for Lorna to assert her identity as an Independent, Liberated Woman. (UXM #65)
The X-Men, including Alex, fight the Hulk. (UXM #66)
He gets kidnapped again, this time with the rest of the X-Men, who have to be rescued in a Captain America comic in '72. (Cap #172-174)
He disappears into the desert and then has to fight the Hulk again when Lorna comes to try and convince him to return to the X-Men. (Incredible Hulk #150)
Captured by Krakoa along with Lorna & the others and has to be rescued. (Giant-Size X-Men #1)
Leaves the X-Men with Lorna to go into the desert, where he is then captured and mind-controlled into trying to fight Scott before disappearing. (UXM #97)
He appears to show up to fight the current X-Men again, only for it to be revealed that this Alex is a Sentinel merely wearing his shape. (UXM #100)
Alex Summers truly is just...deeply, deeply objectified by the narrative, and the only times he's allowed to be a human being, ironically, are his sojourns in the desert. We only see his story from his own perspective when he's in desert settings at this point in the narrative.
Which, like, it makes me wonder if that's arguably a pattern that will continue forward — since I know there's also Havok & Wolverine: Meltdown, and the Outback, and also even the desert nightmare in Hellions.
Wild shit.

Hello it is me in your inbox asking you to ramble for hours abt your comic blorbos 👁👄👁
YIPPPEEE!!! gonna quickly ramble about my favourite little silly Marvel boy...
Tumblr media
HIM!!!! literal love at first sight, I tend to be drawn towards silly dumb character and he perfectly fits the mold
his real human name is Karl Lykos, but later named himself after the LOTR character Sauron when he became evil (yes this is canon) like he started of as a jekyll and hyde thing but bad, but then marvel gave up making it good so he just went all "im fully evil now >:3"
Tumblr media
he is obviously a pterodactyl man... i mean look at him lmao, but he is also a fucking vampire, and can suck the life energy of others + mind control people by looking into their eyes just like the Hotel Transylvania Dracula, OH and he killed every single child he had (ough the problematic fav swag)
was also then later recruited to be an evil science teacher for the hellfire club
Tumblr media
an evil mind controlling dinosaur, vampire, science teacher who kills his own kids... what more could you want in a blorbo???
he is such a beautiful gem of 60s era comics, and I'm happy Marvel still uses him despite how stupid and ridiculous his concept is
