Dallas Wings on a 4 game losing streak. Trouble in what used to be paradise??
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Dallas Wings are on a 4 game losing streak. This is the longest losing streak of the season for the Wings and it couldn’t have come at a worse time. They only have 7 games left to make an impact on the standings and it has seemed as if the Wings have lost their identity. At least 3 (I am confident with 4) of those games should have been wins for the Wings to help solidify their place in the top 4. However, Dallas has played little to no defense in all of these games and thus has given up the rights to win. Now they found themselves at #8. And if things don’t change will be on the outside looking in.
This 4 game losing streak has me puzzled as to why this team is struggling so much. But I think it’s safe to say that improvements have to start on the defensive end. Dallas needs to get back to the active defense that they were playing at the beginning of the season. They may not get every stop but they at least made their opponents work for everything they got. If defense improves, I believe that will lead Dallas back to things that made them great: rebounding and running in transition.
It’s time. This is the moment of truth for the Dallas Wings. Can Skylar Diggins-Smith be the leader they need? Get this team going again to finish off strong and into the playoffs? Can they RISE TOGETHER, face this adversity and overcome?
I think they can. This team has all it needs to make a run into the playoffs but it will not be a walk. They need to run and push their way in. Let’s do this Wings!
Rise Together!

SB Nation’s official WNBA All-Star starter picks
Tumblr media
Here are the players we voted to send to Vegas for the 2019 WNBA All-Star Game.
Welcome to The W Is It, a weekly column about all the stuff that freakin’ rules in the WNBA. Have any tips of topics to cover? Find me @mellentuck on Twitter.
The WNBA season is nearing its halfway point, and this season’s celebration will take place in Las Vegas for the first time on July 27. It’s going to be epic — DJ Liz Cambage is set to perform with Snoop Dogg and Iggy Azalea the night before the game.
But right now is a stressful time. This is my first time voting as an official member of the media panel, and I’ve spent the better part of the weekend sweating, second-guessing, and compulsively reloading Basketball-Reference pages. With teams only playing 12-14 games at this point, it’s tough to decide who really earns a spot. Nevertheless, I’ve come to my decisions.
Remember:
Media vote for the starting 10 — four backcourt players and six frontcourt players
Coaches vote for the 12 reserves
Media votes only count for 25 percent of the total tally (players get 25 percent, while fans 50 percent). So if you hate my picks, yell at me in the comments but THEN GO VOTE on your own. You have until Tuesday at 5 p.m. ET.
Here are my choices, and why:
Backcourt
1. Kia Nurse, New York Liberty
Yeah, Kia Nurse! The Liberty weren’t expected to be in the playoff mix this year, but Nurse, at only 23 years old is breaking out and keeping them in. She’s the future wing of the W, taking six threes per game and sinking 38 percent of them. Averaging 17 points per game, Nurse is handing a bigger offensive role with ease. In her second season, she should be an All-Star.
2. Kayla McBride, Las Vegas Aces
At long last, McBride is playing on a championship roster, and she’s making the most of it. She’s scoring 15 points on a career-best 43 percent shooting from deep and 47 percent from the field. With five rebounds and three assists to boot, she’s an easy All-Star choice to rep the hometown Aces.
3. Ariel Atkins, Washington Mystics
Best believe Atkins, a second-year player who wasn’t even invited to the 2018 draft, should start among the game’s best. A two-way phenom, Atkins is building off her terrific rookie season to score 12 points on 37 percent three-point shooting with nearly two steals per game for the best team in the league. She needs to be a starter in Vegas.
4. Odyssey Sims, Minnesota Lynx
The final choice in the backcourt was TOUGH. I considered the Sparks’ Chelsea Gray and Chicago’s Diamond DeShields, but Sims’ season to this point has been more impressive. Back as a consistent starter for the first time in three seasons, she’s doubled her points per game from last year to 16 on double the assists (six), with four rebounds and a steal per game. Her shooting is still shaky (42 percent, 28 percent from deep), but she’s helped carry the Lynx to an 8-6 record despite the losses of Maya Moore, Seimone Augustus, Rebekkah Brunson, Lindsay Whalen, Karima Christmas-Kelly, AND Jessica Shephard.
Just missed the cut: Chelsea Gray, Los Angeles Sparks
Frontcourt
1. Elena Delle Donne, Washington Mystics
Delle Donne is the frontrunner for MVP at this point in the season. Excluding a game she left after one minute with a broken nose, she’s scoring 17 points with nine rebounds per night on 46 percent shooting for the best offense in the league. Easy pick.
2. Natasha Howard, Seattle Storm
Last year’s Most Improved Player of the Year is a surefire All-Star now. Without Sue Bird or Breanna Stewart all season, and without Jewell Loyd for four games and counting, the Storm are 8-8. Howard’s 18 points, nine rebounds, two blocks, and two steals have a heckuva lot to do with that.
3. Jonquel Jones, Connecticut Sun
Jones is averaging 16 points and 11 rebounds per game, and her Connecticut Sun team is a half-game out of first place because of it. Jones — who dunked at the event two years ago by the way — is another easy choice.
4. A’ja Wilson, Las Vegas Aces
Wilson got off to a slow start to the season, but her 39-point game against the Indiana Fever reminded us that she’s a superstar just surrounded by a handful of other superstars in Vegas. She’s scoring 17 points with seven rebounds on 50 percent shooting. All-Star.
5. Liz Cambage, Las Vegas Ages
Cambage got off to a slow start for her new team while playing limited minutes, but now she’s rolling like her MVP-runner up self from a year ago. In just 24 minutes per game, she’s averaging 15 points and eight rebounds on 51 percent shooting. Add 1.5 blocks and half-a-steal a game to that, and you have an All-Star starter.
6. DeWanna Bonner, Phoenix Mercury
Without Diana Taurasi, the Phoenix Mercury haven’t been what we hoped at just 6-6, but Bonner has been. She’s scoring 19 points per game with eight rebounds, three assists and two steals. She isn’t shooting well (38 percent from the field), but her defense is stellar, and that earned her my final vote.
Just missed: Napheesa Collier, Minnesota Lynx
Here are a few other things to celebrate the week.
Chelsea Gray recorded the 8th WNBA triple-double EVER
Gray’s been up-and-down this year, but when she’s on, she’s ON. In a 17-point win over the Mystics, she scored 13 points (5-of-12 shootIng), grabbed 10 boards, and dished 13 assists with just two turnovers. I might not’ve picked her as a starter, but she’s an All-Star for sure.

@ LA Sparks 7/12/18
Tumblr media
The Dallas Wings get a BIG win in La yesterday! This game was amazing in different ways than the usual. The Wings came out with pretty good energy. Their shots weren't falling as well as they would have liked but they stayed present in the game and kept flowing. Even when LA started to punch back to take leads, Dallas stayed patient and present in the game. No panic. The game slowed down and got kind if sloppy but Dallas stayed true to their game plan. Liz Cambage got a back to back tech and ejected from the game at the end of the 2nd quarter. THIS DID NOT DERAIL THE DALLAS WINGS! They made adjustments and took it to LA. Skylar and Co decided they weren't losing this game and they didn't. They won in a blow out. That is the mental toughness that has been missing with this team. The few games after Indiana were/are going to be tests for this team and so far they have passed. They have the defense they need. They have the offense they need. And now they have the mental toughness to win REGARDLESS of anything that happens. AND they are doing it ALL as a team. No Liz show. No Skylar show. It's the Dallas Wings show and it's a good one! They've won 5 games in a row now- the longest streak in the WNBA right now and the longest winning streak for the Dallas Wings Franchise.
I am thoroughly impressed with Fred William's patience and confidence in this Dallas Wings team. He put a plan together. Despite troubles and changes, he stuck with it. He was patient knowing the work they were doing and now it's starting to pay off.
Also, really impressed with Skylar's leadership. She is really showing us what a floor general should look like and making a case for MVP. She is creating for herself and for her teammates. This team is going as she goes and she is going up.
Keep RISING TOGETHER, Dallas Wings!
Record: 12-8
Rank: 5

Maya Moore, one of the biggest stars in the WNBA, says she won’t play basketball this year
Tumblr media
Moore is sitting out the season to focus on family and “invest time in some ministry dreams.”
The WNBA will be without Maya Moore, one of its best and most popular players, for the 2019 season. The four-time champion and 2014 MVP announced on Tuesday in a Players Tribune story that she won’t be playing basketball in 2019.
“My focus in 2019 will not be on professional basketball,” Moore wrote, “but will instead be on the people in my family, as well as on investing my time in some ministry dreams that have been stirring in my heart for many years.”
In mid-Jan. reports claimed Moore was considering taking the season off. Lynx coach and general manager Cheryl Reeve responded, saying the sides were “deciding the best way to approach next season.” Now we know the outcome
For the first time in eight years, the Minnesota Lynx will be without their star, who is perennially among the league’s leaders in scoring. Moore’s been a leading force in the Lynx’s four titles in seven years.
Moore did not mention anything about her future past 2019.
What does this mean for the WNBA?
Losing Moore for the season is a tough blow for the growing league, especially considering the impact of Minnesota’s star. The Lynx play in the league’s second-biggest market, and Moore is one of, if not the most popular player in the league. She was the leading All-Star vote-getter last season.
Her talent will surely be missed. Moore is averaging 18 points and six rebounds over her career, and her aggressive offensive display is must-watch TV. She’s a slasher, a shooter and a good defender who’s risen in fame because, quite simply, she wins a whole dang lot.
Dating back to high school, she’s won a championship minimally once every two years. She won four consecutive high school championships, two titles with the Connecticut Huskies in 2009 and 2010, and four out of seven titles with the Lynx in alternating years.
Any team with Maya Moore has a chance at winning it all, which is why the 2019 season will feel so much different without her.
What does this mean for the Lynx?
Minnesota is far from out of the playoff hunt without Moore, but the team will look a heckuva lot different. Starting point guard Lindsay Whalen has retired, and the future for Lynx legend Rebekkah Brunson is still undecided.
Sylvia Fowles, the 2016 MVP, will be back at center, as will guard/forward Seimone Augustus. Fowles is still one of the league’s best players, and will surely shoulder more of the offensive workload. The Lynx also signed free agent Karima Christmas-Kelly, a veteran wing known for her play on both sides of the ball, who will presumably fill Moore’s role.
Minnesota also has the No. 6 pick in April’s 2019 draft, where it can look to rebuild towards its future. Maybe they’ll be able to nab Notre Dame guard Arike Ogunbowale, a sweet-scoring wing, or athletic forward Napheesa Collier from Connecticut. Whoever’s taken there should earn legitimate playing time. The Lynx’s current youth should get a fair chance to show itself too, with Cece Zandalisini, Alexis Jones and Temi Fagbenle all showing capable rotation minutes last season.
The Minnesota Lynx starting their post-dynasty rebuild without Maya Moore isn’t ideal, but the 2019 season has a chance to show who is and is not part of the next era.

Vs. Phoenix Mercury
Tumblr media
Great team win for the Dallas Wings! The Wings put together another complete game to beat the top seeded Phoenix Mercury. Everything was clicking for Dallas. High energy on both ends of the floor. Forcing turnovers or tough shots on defense, making Phoenix work hard for what they get. Making Phoenix work hard while Dallas was on offense by moving with the ball and without the ball to find different scorers. This team was RISING TOGETHER! They did not just rely on Skylar and Liz. It took every player giving everything on both sides of the floor to get this win (even with an illed/out Diana Taurasi). And win they did. The Dallas Wings are making a case for being Title Contenders.
Honorable Mention:
The 11-8, 4 game win streaking Dallas Wings- Rising Together.
