On the latest episode of Koffee With Karan, he asked his guest Alia Bhatt about her recent comments about husband Ranbir Kapoor that raked up a huge controversy. Alia was joined on the couch by her sister-in-law Kareena Kapoor.

What was the controversy?

Recently, Alia had said in a beauty tutorial video that Ranbir doesn’t like it when she wears lipsticks and tells her to ‘wipe it off’. While she did mention that he said so because he liked the natural look of her lips, people of social media found his behaviour to be a little too overbearing and even ‘toxic’. Many tweets and videos were shared, assessing and dissecting their relationship, which was even termed unhealthy.

Now, Alia mentioned on the show how the fact that Ranbir is not on social media, might have a part to play in all the trolling that they so often receive. “I have a very candid way of speaking. So when I talk about anything in my life, I like to imitate the person, give anecdotes, make it personal. I feel a lot of things get picked out of context, which happened recently with the video. My team told me ‘ye kuch out of hand jaara hai’. I was like, okay theek hai jaane do. Then I realise that there were serious articles written about how he was a toxic man, and I thought, ‘are we serious?’ There are many issues in the world to give more attention to.”

‘He’s the opposite’ “The only reason I feel bad is because he is genuinely the opposite… There is a line which I think is being crossed but you cannot say anything about it. Ranbir says this, ‘Alia the audience owns you, they can say whatever the hell they want to say about you, as long as your movies are doing well please don’t complain sitting in your apartment in Bandra’,” she added.

Recently,Alia had said something similar. Alia said that while she does feel bad about the nasty things she reads about herself or her loved ones, she would never ‘fight with her audience’. “As long as my movies are doing well and I am entertaining them…” Alia added that these are the moments that she has to show her gratitude towards her audience.

Ending Your Life Is No Solution

The entire media is bustling with what Sushant Singh Rajput has done and everyone has their own interpretation.

I have lots of say in this so trying to break it down to specifics:

I just saw a tweet that Kamal R Khan has put out on February 27, 2020 that stated: Yashraj, Sajid Nadiadwala, Salman Khan, Balaji Motion Pictures, Karan Johar, Dinesh Vijayan, Sanjay Leela Bhansali as well as T-Series have all boycotted Sushant Singh Rajput and he will have to do television serials only.

This is what I have to say on the above: first of all I don’t support Karan or Aditya, but the fact of the matter is that most of the actors do not entertain independent producers, first time directors or writers. They all run behind established banners.

I am sure there are many great scripts by first timers, but the SAD part is that that none of the main stream actors stand to support them. A lot of independent produces, first time directors with good scripts approach established actors, but all they get to here is that they do not want to work with first timers.

In fact, a couple of years ago, I had approached actors like Rajkummar Rao and Ayushmann Khurrana, but sadly all I got to hear was, “Sorry you are a TV writer, sorry, we only want to work with an established team”.

The funny part is that these same actors complain about a lobby and how harsh this industry is. I really don’t get this.

Now if I was an actor and if I was in their place, I would have made my own empire, picked up the so called television writers, good first time technicians, a financer and would have set the ball rolling and if this formula got me success at the Box Office, then I would have never needed the Johar’s and the Chopra’s.

At this point I may sound rude, but I want to know what were the parents, brother and sisters of all the actors who have ended their lives doing. Did they not see it coming, why did they leave them alone. I am sure none of us will ask them these questions but how can their own family just leave them.

Apparently, Sushant was not in touch with his family for a while now, but why did the family not make an effort to be in touch with him. Even if he was avoiding them, why did they not force themselves on to him. Once again, I really do not get this too.

Couple of years ago I had asked the same question to Pratyusha Banerjee’s parents and I am still waiting for an answer.

Also, I feel the word Nepotism is so very OVERRATTED. It all started when Kangana Ranaut made this statement on Koffee With Karan on February 20, 2017. I would like to ask anyone and everyone about this so called privileged star kids.

Why are we only taking about successful star kids like Ranbir Kapoor, Sara Ali Khan, Tiger Shroff, Alia Bhatt and many more.

We should even talk about Mala Sinha’s daughter Pratibha Sinha, Smita Patel’s son Prateik Babbar, Mithun Chakraborty son Mahaakshay Chakraborty, Anil Kapoor’s son Harshvardhan Kapoor and many more.

I am sure, if Kangana’s nephew wants to either become an actor or a director, she will put together a project for him. But then it will happen two decades later and that not be Nepotism as she is self-made. Now if that’s the case then even Shah Rukh Khan is self-made so why do we troll Aryan and Suhana.

Nepotism exists everyone, it’s easy for a doctor to push his own child if he chooses to be a doctor.

I am not a Shah Rukh Khan fan, but then I want to ask you all a question, when Shah Rukh Khan had introduced Mukesh Ambani's son Anant, post his weight loss, at an event as he was joining his father’s empire, the media covered Anant’s mother, Nita Ambani, who has in tears and had stated that it was a proud moment for a mother.

Few months later, Shah Rukh Khan unveiled Suhana’s Vogue cover in the Middle East, but was trolled for Nepotism and the fact that Suhana did not deserve to be on the cover.

So according to everyone, Anant was deserving, while Suhana was not. Well, that’s being NASTY and UNFAIR.

Before I say good bye, I would like to tell you that there is only ONE thing that separates the ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTURY from the rest and that’s the fact that the HINDI ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY is a Personality Lead Medium. We do not judge people for their calibre, but we judge them according to OUR COMFORT LEVEL.

Unlike the corporates, where your CV commands respect, in the HINDI ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY the decision entirely rests on the Producer or the board caster. If he or she wants to work with you, you will get work, if not, then tough luck!!

“Happy Indian family drama,” says Karan Johar for his upcoming film Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani'

Karan Johar is all set for the release of his next movie Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani' (RARKPK). The movie was shot last year and as per Karan Johar, it gave him the desired thrill, joy, and chaos. It’s been almost 6 years since 'Ae Dil Hai Mushkil' (2016) that Karan have come up with a film and he cannot agree more. Talking about the upcoming movie, Karan says “It made me realize that I love being on set the most. At 50, [I have decided] that I will not take such long gaps.”

The delay in his work was primarily because he wanted to work on a large project, Takht which however got stuck and delayed because of pandemic and related concerns. It was then he decides to come up with something new and wrote Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani', a movie starring Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan, and Shabana Azmi. 

The movie is a complete family drama and Karan expects it to be synced with the taste of the modern audience. “As filmmakers, we all have to go back to the basics, if we want commercial [success]. If you want to make an artistic film, go ahead, but know that your audience will get limited. Now, the cinema-going audiences want the tadka of Hindi cinema that got diluted over the decades. The [success of] KGF: Chapter 2, RRR, and Pushpa: The Rise [2021] [proves the theory]. We need to go back to [the elements] we grew up on — drama, songs, dance, and emotions. The phase of small-town, high-concept movies is great, but this is the reality of our times.”

The family is a “happy Indian family drama”, he says. “There is unabashed naach-gaana. Dharamji is a ball of love, and at 86, he is so passionate. Shabanaji is an acting institution. With Jayaji, whom I call aunty J, I feel like I have a mom on the set.”

With full confidence in the movie, Karan however is ready to face the criticism as well as he considers it an integral part of any project. “I read the criticism before the praise. The praise does nothing for you, but what’s bad or what’s mediocre needs to be told. I even read what the trolls [write]. I feel the more grounded I am, the more I will be able to fly.”
