LockBit Ransomware Gang Claims Responsibility for Wichita, KS Cyberattack
The notorious LockBit ransomware gang has claimed responsibility for a devastating cyberattack on the City of Wichita, Kansas, the largest city in the state with a population of nearly 400,000. This ransomware attack has forced the City's authorities to shut down crucial IT systems used for online bill payment, including court fines, water bills, and public transportation. Wichita, a major cultural, economic, and transportation hub in the region, and home to several aircraft factories, announced the disruptive ransomware attack last Sunday, May 5, 2024. In response, the City's IT specialists promptly shut down computers used in online services to contain the damage and stop the spread of the attack, as stated in their announcement: "This decision was not made lightly but was necessary to ensure that systems are securely vetted before returning to service." LockBit Ransomware Gang Threatens Data Leak Earlier today, the LockBit ransomware group added Wichita to its extortion portal, threatening to publish all stolen files on the site by May 15, 2024, unless the City pays the ransom. This unusually quick listing of a ransomware victim, merely three days after the attack, is believed to be in retaliation for the recent international law enforcement operation that named and sanctioned the leader of the LockBit ransomware operation, a 31-year-old Russian national named Dmitry Yuryevich Khoroshev, who uses the online alias "LockBitSupp."
Lockbit Lists the City of Wichita as one of its victims.
Widespread Service Disruptions in Wichita
Meanwhile, Wichita continues to face significant disruptions, with the latest status update indicating that the following services remain unavailable: - Auto payments for water bills are suspended. - Public Wi-Fi at certain locations (Airport terminal, Advanced Learning Library, Evergreen, and Walters branches of the Library). - The online catalog, databases, and some digital services of the Library. - Email communications through the city network for Library staff. - Self-service print release stations and self-check stations at the Library. - Automated materials handler at the Advanced Learning Library. - Most incoming phone call capability for the Library. - Wi-Fi and phone services at neighborhood resource centers. - Public services, including golf courses, parks, courts, and the water district, require residents to pay in cash or by check while online payment platforms are shut down. Additionally, any Request for Bid, Proposal, or Qualifications with a due date of May 10, 2024, has been deferred until May 17, 2024, and the 'Bid Opening' scheduled for Friday, May 10, 2024, has been canceled. Public safety services like the Wichita Fire Department (WFD) and Wichita Police Department (WPD) have resorted to using "pen and paper" reports, and the Wichita Transit buses and landfill services can only accept cash payments. Data Theft and Potential Leak While the City is still investigating whether data was stolen in the attack, the LockBit ransomware gang is known for stealing data before deploying their encryptors. Therefore, if a ransom is not paid, data will likely be leaked in the future on the ransomware gang's data leak site, exacerbating the already severe impact of this cyberattack on the City of Wichita. The state is also working to improve its disaster response and preparedness, ensuring that communities are better equipped to withstand and recover from climate-related disasters.
Environmental Issues in Missouri
Environmental issues are a significant concern in Missouri due to the state's extensive agricultural and industrial activities. Farming activities contribute heavily to the pollution of water resources, including streams, rivers, and lakes. The use of fertilizers and pesticides in agriculture has impacted the quality of water in the state, leading to downstream pollution and ecosystem degradation. Similarly, the industrial activities such as manufacturing, mining, and energy production contribute to air and water pollution. The emissions from power plants, factories, and vehicles have had adverse impacts on air quality and public health in Missouri. The high levels of pollution have resulted in an increase in health problems like respiratory disease, cancer, and heart disease. Conservation groups continue to advocate for better protection of Missouri's natural resources, including air and water quality, forests, wetlands, and wildlife. The Missouri Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are responsible for enforcing the state's environmental regulations and ensuring compliance with federal standards. The state has implemented several programs to address environmental issues, such as the Missouri Clean Water Law and the Missouri Clean Air Act, which outline measures aimed at reducing pollution in the state. the Missouri DNR has implemented the Missouri Watershed Initiative, which targets protecting and preserving the state's water resources through the implementation of best management practices. Several initiatives have been put in place to promote renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power, which are being adopted by various companies and institutions. These initiatives aim to reduce the dependency on fossil fuels and their associated emissions. Missouri is faced with different environmental challenges, and it is essential to take action to ensure the protection of its natural resources. The state's government and the private sector must work together to implement measures aimed at reducing pollution and promoting sustainable development.
Politics in Missouri
Missouri has a unique political landscape, with a mix of both liberal and conservative ideals. However, most voters in the state tend to lean towards conservative candidates, especially in recent years. This shift towards the right can be attributed to the state's demographics and the influence of conservative media outlets. The state's political culture is robust, with several notable political figures hailing from Missouri. Some of these figures include former presidents Harry S. Truman and George H.W. Bush, as well as prominent politicians like Thomas Hart Benton and Kit Bond. Missouri is also known for being a bellwether state in presidential elections. This means that the state has a history of correctly predicting the winner of presidential elections. Of the last 29 presidential elections, Missouri has correctly predicted the outcome in all but three. One factor that contributes to Missouri's bellwether status is its diverse population. However, the cost of car rentals can add up quickly and eat into your travel budget. Fear not! In this article, we will share valuable insights on how to save money on your next car rental, ensuring you get the best deals and make the most of your travel experience.
If you are looking for a car rental agnecy?
At Car Rental Kansas City, we understand that renting a car can sometimes be a hassle. That's why we are dedicated to making your rental experience as seamless and stress-free as possible. Our knowledgeable staff is available to assist you every step of the way, ensuring that you get the perfect vehicle for your needs.
Understanding Your Car Rental Needs
Before embarking on your car rental quest, take a moment to analyze your needs. Consider the number of passengers, the amount of luggage, and the type of terrain you'll encounter. Understanding your requirements will help you choose the right vehicle, avoiding unnecessary expenses for extra space or features you won't use.
Researching the Best Car Rental Companies
Not all car rental companies are created equal. Some offer better prices, while others provide superior customer service. Take the time to research different car rental companies, read reviews, and compare prices. Opt for a reputable company that strikes a balance between cost-effectiveness and reliability.
Timing is Everything: Booking in Advance
The early bird catches the worm, and in the world of car rentals, booking in advance can save you a bundle. As your travel dates approach, demand for rental cars may surge, causing prices to skyrocket. By booking early, you secure better rates and have a wider selection of vehicles to choose from.

Unveiling Hidden Gems: Off-Airport Locations
Airport car rental locations may seem convenient, but they often come with additional fees and surcharges. Off-airport locations, on the other hand, can offer more competitive prices. Take advantage of these hidden gems and consider renting from locations near airports to save money.
The Magic of Discount Codes and Coupons
Never underestimate the power of discount codes and coupons. Many car rental companies offer promotions and special deals that can significantly reduce your rental costs. Look for these money-saving codes online or through memberships in various organizations, such as AAA or credit card loyalty programs.
Embracing Flexibility: Consider Different Vehicles
While you may have your heart set on a specific car model, being flexible can pay off. Different vehicle categories come with varying price tags. Opting for a smaller, more fuel-efficient car can result in substantial savings on both rental costs and gas expenses.
Opt for Economy Cars: Save on Gas
Speaking of fuel efficiency, economy cars are champions at sipping fuel. If you're not planning on an off-road adventure and can manage with a smaller car, choosing an economy car can lead to significant savings on gas during your trip.
Avoiding Extra Fees: Be a Smart Renter
Car rental companies often make extra money through add-on services and fees. Carefully read the rental agreement to understand potential charges and avoid unnecessary expenses. Decline services like GPS rental or pre-paid fuel if you have your own navigation device or plan to fill up the tank yourself.
Mastering the Art of Price Negotiation
Negotiating the rental price might seem daunting, but it's worth a shot, especially if you've found a better deal elsewhere. Politely inquire if the car rental company can match or beat a competitor's offer. They might just give you a discount to secure your business.
Utilizing Memberships and Loyalty Programs
If you frequently rent cars, consider signing up for memberships or loyalty programs offered by car rental companies. These programs often provide perks such as discounted rates, priority service, and free upgrades, helping you save money in the long run.
Insuring Your Rental Car: Do You Really Need It?
One of the most common questions when renting a car is whether to purchase insurance offered by the rental company. Check with your personal car insurance and credit card companies to see if they already cover rental cars. Skipping rental car insurance can save you a substantial amount.
Fueling Up Strategically: To Prepay or Not to Prepay?
When returning your rental car, some companies may offer you the option to prepay for fuel. Before accepting this offer, consider your travel plans and the local gas prices. Prepaying might save you time, but it's not always the most cost-effective choice.
Returning the Car: Tips for a Smooth Process
To avoid unexpected charges and disputes, return the rental car on time and in the same condition you received it. Check for any damage and take photos as proof. Following the return process correctly will ensure a smooth and hassle-free experience.
Conclusion
By employing these money-saving tips and tricks, you can unlock the best deals on your next car rental and make your journey even more enjoyable. Remember to plan ahead, research your options, and take advantage of discounts and memberships. With a little effort and resourcefulness, you can keep more money in your pocket without compromising on your travel experience.

5 Reasons To Choose Oshawa Airport Limousine Service Over A Cab.
The next time you're debating between using a ridesharing app or hailing a cab, give a town car service a shot. If you're heading home from the airport, out to dinner, or to a sporting event, think about employing a Bowmanville airport limousine service.
Utilise A Town Car Service!
Do you have any special evening plans? Are you making the trip for a conference or business meeting in a new location? Have you had a few beers and need a ride home in safety?
By choosing a ridesharing service or waiting for a cab, don't take a chance.
Don't pay exorbitant surge prices simply to be driven home in a beat-up automobile that smells like smokes or worse.
Think considering employing a town car service the next time you need transportation. The top five reasons to hire a town vehicle are listed in the following paragraphs. Also airport limousine service Whitby is one of the best services of ours
Comfort
Vehicles used for traditional taxi services generally have severe wear and tear. The number of tough city miles is hard on the engine and the interior. Both the interior and outside of these taxis usually have terrible conditions.
Ride-sharing services are occasionally used. Although useful, you cannot tell a vehicle's condition until you are inside of it. These companies do have make and model requirements, but the driver is responsible for their own maintenance and upkeep.
Black vehicle service eliminates the mystery. At Overland, we give our customers' security and convenience a top priority.
Class
Your car should be suitable for the circumstances. A cab or rideshare car might be sufficient for a short trip home from the bar. But not for an official business meeting, a dinner at a five-star restaurant, or a black-tie event.
Ajax airport limousine service fleets are opulent, chic, and refined. At Overland, we have the biggest, most diverse new model fleet in Kansas City.
You can count on executive cars and luxury automobiles that are immaculate and well-kept when you choose a town car service like Overland. In contrast to cab or ride-sharing services, you will also experience a stress-free, leisurely travel to and from your special event, meeting, or airport excursion.
Responsibility
Everyone who frequently uses a standard cab or a ride-sharing service has at least one terrifying story about a poor driver. These drivers are ubiquitous, and if you're unlucky enough, you can end yourself in their car.
These drivers could be careless or lost. They might try to engage you in a wholly inappropriate topic by talking too much. That would be extremely unpleasant for a passenger.
Even worse, they might act inappropriately or criminally towards you. With rideshare companies, female safety has improved over time.
Although the Oshawa airport limousine service has a system for grading drivers, this does not guarantee that the service will be reliable. Why run the risk? We really cherish our brand and would never put our customers through such hardship.
Dependability
Every city is different, and some might have specific transit issues. Taxis are generally simple to locate in areas like New York City, Las Vegas, and Chicago.
In other cities, the cab services are not the best. They could be expensive and involve long waits. In some cities, taxi services are periodically nonexistent or scarce.
Even while ride-share services have assisted many cities in filling up their transportation gaps, the amount of drivers on the road at any given time impacts how fast you can purchase a car. It can take longer than you expect for you to wait.
Any city's airport deals with the same issues.
Every airport has a unique layout, and the pick-up and drop-off areas for taxis and ridesharing services are typically in different places. Each city's own transit regulations and procedures apply to this.
In a large airport, it could be difficult to locate a taxi stand or a ride-sharing location. And having to wait for a driver for 20 minutes or longer can be even more inconvenient.
If you need to travel swiftly for work or play, make arrangements with an airport town car service in advance to save yourself the hassle.
You will be greeted at the gate or baggage claim by the TSA-screened drivers for these services, who will also assist you with your luggage and bring you to your vehicle. The terminals are off limits to everyone, even the taxi and ridesharing drivers.
Fixed Price
Any travel budget, whether for business or pleasure, can be blown by the cost of transportation. In many cities, traditional taxis can be quite expensive, and the price of ride-sharing services varies minute by minute based on the time of day and surge pricing.
One advantage of town car service is the cost estimate for the limousine rental that is provided up front.
Any corporation will be helped by this uniform price for services provided in a professional setting to effectively plan dependable travel for its workers.
With this pricing, vacationers can get the most out of their money without being surprised in a fun setting. Although not usually, town car service could be less expensive than a cab or rideshare. The absence of surprises is more important. You will receive a lot for your money if you use a trustworthy town car service.
What Makes a Town Car Service Necessary?
Instead of paying for unpredictable and perhaps risky transportation the next time you're out on the town or coming home from the airport, consider hiring a town car service.
As the saying goes, if you thought hiring a professional is pricey, wait till you hire Airport Limo.

Shooting of Teen Who Rang Doorbell at Wrong House Unsettles Kansas City (NYT) On Tuesday morning, hundreds of Staley High School students filled the street outside their school in a display of anger and support for their fellow student, Ralph Yarl, who was shot by a homeowner after he rang a doorbell at the wrong house in Kansas City last week. Many residents of Kansas City remained deeply troubled by the events that had shaken their city for the last several days. In a country on edge over crime, the shooting was the latest example of an ordinary interaction—the ringing of a doorbell on a front step in a quiet neighborhood in Missouri—instantly turning into another shocking incident of American gun violence. “I am, I think, sufficiently frightened over how easily we are willing to shoot each other,” said Representative Emanuel Cleaver, a Democrat who previously served as the first Black mayor of Kansas City. Paul Yarl, Ralph’s father, said this week that his son, an athlete who loves music and video games, had surgery over the weekend to remove the bullets and was able to walk out of the hospital on Sunday. He is expected to make a full recovery.
US must stem ‘iron river’ of guns flowing to Latin America, activists say (Reuters) U.S. guns, many of them exported legally, are flowing into Latin America in an “iron river” ending in the hands of drug cartels and abusive security forces, activists said Monday, calling for greater oversight from U.S. law and federal agencies. More than half of “crime guns” recovered and traced in Central America are sourced from the United States, according to U.S. gun control agency ATF. This level nears 70% for Mexico and is around 80% across the Caribbean. “It’s called the iron river and it’s flooding countries to the south,” Elizabeth Burke of U.S. non-profit Global Action on Gun Violence said at an event organized by the Center for American Progress in Washington.
Mexico and the World’s Most Notorious Spy Tool (NYT) In 2011, the Israelis came to Mexico to clinch a major sale: The Mexican military was about to become the first client ever to buy their product, the world’s most advanced spyware. The spyware, known as Pegasus, has since become a global byword for the chilling reach of state surveillance, a tool used by governments from Europe to the Middle East to hack into thousands of cellphones. A New York Times investigation based on interviews, documents and forensic tests of hacked phones reveals that the country grew into the most prolific user of the world’s most infamous spyware. Mexico went on to wield the surveillance tool against civilians who stand up to the state—abuses the country insists it has stopped. But The Times found that Mexico has continued to use Pegasus to spy on people who defend human rights, even in recent months. Many tools can infiltrate your digital life, but Pegasus is exceptionally potent. It can infect your phone without any sign of intrusion and extract everything on it—every email, text message, photo, calendar appointment—while monitoring everything you do with it, in real time. It can record every keystroke, even when you’re using encrypted applications, and watch through your phone’s camera or listen through its microphone, even if your phone appears to be turned off.
Strike to bring German rail travel to standstill on Friday (AP) Commuters in Germany face widespread disruption on Friday after the EVG rail and transport union announced a nationwide strike during the busy morning hours, affecting national operator Deutsche Bahn. The strike, which coincides with a separate walkout at three airports, involves 50 rail companies and will run from 3 a.m. (0100 GMT) until 11 a.m. (0900 GMT), EVG said. “Not a single train will run (in the country),” EVG representative Cosima Ingenschay said.
Russia’s New Conscription Law Brings the Digital Gulag Closer (Moscow Times) New legislation on drafting Russian nationals into military service rushed through the Russian parliament last week dramatically changes the relationship between the state and the people. Under the new law passed at breakneck speed by both chambers of parliament, the authorities can issue call-up papers online and will set up a digital database of all Russians eligible for military service (most Russian men aged eighteen to thirty are expected to perform obligatory national service). Previously, people had to be served their draft papers in person, making it relatively easy to dodge the draft. Now draft notices can also be issued via the state services website Gosuslugi, used by millions of Russians for a plethora of day-to-day administrative tasks such as paying fines and applying for passports. Regardless of whether a person has a Gosuslugi account, or even uses the internet, they will still be penalized for failing to report to the recruitment office once a digital draft notice is issued. Those penalties include a ban on leaving the country, as well as on driving, buying and selling real estate, taking out loans, and registering a small business. The planned digital registry will gather information about potential draftees from every possible source, from medical and electoral records to courts and tax returns.
Proxy war? (Washington Post) Three days before the Feb. 24 anniversary of his Ukraine invasion, Vladimir Putin outlined what he had learned during a year of war. With its ever-increasing supply of sophisticated weapons, Putin said, the West was now using Ukraine as a “testing range” for its plans to destroy Russia. Its goal was “to spark a war in Europe, and to eliminate competitors by using a proxy force,” he said in a presidential address. “They plan to finish us once and for all.” His depiction of a Western-provoked war threatening Russia’s very existence has resonated, particularly in the Global South, where some countries see the United States engaged in what they consider serial interventions around the world, and have declined to take sides. Whether Ukraine has become a “proxy” war between great powers has itself become an intellectual and political battlefield. Scores of images recently leaked online, many with classified U.S. military and intelligence assessments, illustrate how deeply the United States is involved in virtually every aspect of the war, with the exception of U.S. boots on the ground. Maps illustrate troop locations, battle plans and likely outcomes on the battlefield down to the smallest towns, along with the location and strength of Russian defenses. There are lists of weapons systems in use by both sides, casualty estimates, summaries of intercepted conversations and assessments of everything from special forces capabilities to expended ammunition. The leaked documents confirm in detail that the United States is using its vast array of espionage and surveillance tools to keep Kyiv ahead of Moscow’s war plans and help them inflict Russian casualties.
1 city, 2 people—and India’s widening religious divide (AP) Syed Mohammad Munir Abidi says India is a changed country, one he doesn’t recognize anymore. It’s a country, the 68-year-old says, where Muslims are ignored, where rising attacks against them are encouraged, and where an emboldened Hindu majoritarian government is seizing its chance to put the minority community in its place. Swami Ram Das thinks otherwise, echoing a belief system central to Hindu nationalism. The 48-year-old Hindu priest says India is on a quest to redeem its religious past and that the country is fundamentally a Hindu nation where minorities, especially Muslims, must subscribe to Hindu primacy. Abidi and Das are two ordinary citizens living in one city in a country of more than 1.4 billion people that is on the cusp of becoming the world’s most populated nation. Together they embody the opposing sides of a deeply entrenched religious divide that presents India with one of its biggest challenges: to safeguard freedoms for its Muslim minority at a time when a rising tide of Hindu nationalism is eroding the country’s secular underpinnings.
G-7 stresses unity on China following unease over Macron’s comments (Washington Post) The top diplomats from the Group of Seven major industrial democracies stressed the need to unite against China’s economic, military and cyber assertiveness, in a display of solidarity Tuesday after differences emerged recently over the fate of Taiwan. “We recognize the importance of engaging candidly with and expressing our concerns directly to China,” said the communique from the G-7 meeting, representing the views of the United States, Italy, France, Germany, Britain, Canada, Japan and the European Union. “We reiterate our call for China to act as a responsible member of the international community.” The calls for unity followed French President Emmanuel Macron’s recent visit to Beijing, after which he suggested that Europe needed to avoid getting dragged into a confrontation between China and the United States over Taiwan. Macron’s remarks to reporters after his meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping prompted transatlantic disquiet. “The question Europeans need to answer … is it in our interest to accelerate [a crisis] on Taiwan? No,” he told reporters. “The worse thing would be to think that we Europeans must become followers on this topic and take our cue from the U.S. agenda and a Chinese overreaction.” U.S. lawmakers, especially Republicans, reacted furiously.
China readies supersonic spy drone unit, leaked document says (Washington Post) The Chinese military could soon deploy a high-altitude spy drone that travels at least three times the speed of sound, according to a leaked U.S. military assessment, a development that would dramatically strengthen China’s ability to conduct surveillance operations. A secret document from the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, which has not previously been reported, shows the Chinese military is making technological advances that could help it target American warships around Taiwan and military bases in the region. The document features satellite imagery dated Aug. 9 that shows two WZ-8 rocket-propelled reconnaissance drones at an air base in eastern China, about 350 miles inland from Shanghai. The drones are a cutting-edge surveillance system that could help China gather real-time mapping data to inform strategy or carry out missile strikes in a future conflict.
Akiya (NYT) According to government data, as of 2018 there were 8.5 million abandoned vacant homes in Japan, which has experienced both a population decline as well as depopulation in many rural areas. That’s something like 14 percent of the entire country’s housing stock. The Nomura Research Institute estimates the number is even higher, at 11 million such vacant homes—called akiya—and forecasts that by 2033 they could account for 30 percent of all houses in Japan. Municipalities and companies are trying to get them in the hands of younger buyers with cash to upgrade and renovate them.
In grim drought, Tunisians ration water in state-ordered ban (AP) It’s a feeble drip, drip, drip from the taps every night in Tunisia for six months. Spigots are cut off for seven hours from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. in a state-ordered water rationing in most regions across the country, including Tunis, the capital city. Tunisians are on the front lines of a battle against an increasingly severe drought, now in its fifth year in the north African country, with the government issuing a sudden order to its population to ration their water usage from April to September—or risk fines or jail. Households now need a supply of bottled water to wash, use toilets and prepare meals during late night hours. Authorities have also forbidden the use of potable water for irrigation of farmlands, watering green areas in cities and for cleaning streets and cars. Water levels at almost all of Tunisia’s 30-plus dams have fallen drastically, some as low as 17% of their storage capacity.
Trapped by fighting, Sudanese look for ways to survive (AP) For the last three days, Howeida al-Hassan and her family have been hunkered down in the first floor of her home in the Sudanese capital, sleeping on the floor as sounds of airstrikes and gunfire surround them. This is the life of millions of Sudanese trapped in their homes since violence suddenly erupted over the weekend between forces loyal to the country’s top two generals. Civilian life has come to a standstill as tens of thousands of heavily armed fighters from the military and its rival, the Rapid Support Forces, battle it out in densely populated residential areas. For many, food supplies are already dwindling as going out to restock has become too dangerous. So sharing among neighbors has become essential. On social media, posts are appearing giving information on pharmacies and grocery stores that are still open and able to deliver essential goods to those trapped. Others post phone numbers or addresses for their homes, offering to take in anyone caught outside and scrambling for shelter when shooting comes close. Residents have been desperate for at least a temporary cease-fire so they can stock up on supplies or move to safer areas.

Trouble on a Slow Night
Description: Dean didn't think turning his Baby into a taxi would bring him trouble. Until it did.
Pairing: Dean Winchester x Reader
Word Count: 1157
Warnings: Fluff, Angst, Violence, Protective!Dean Winchester (yes that's a warning because it's hot)
Square Filled: Taxi AU
Requested by: @winchest09
Beta'd by: @wonder-cole
Divider by: @firefly-graphics
A/N: Witten for @spndeanbingo
Dean sighed as he drove his car down the road. It was a rare sight to see a black Impala with a Taxi light on the top, but since Dean had to make extra cash, he had no choice. He fitted his car to transport people and track the best way to make money by installing a meter. For the most part, everything seemed to be ordinary. He got as many customers as he could, and most of them were pretty nice, some drunks from time to time, but overall he hadn’t had any trouble.
It was a usual quiet night. Dean was in Kansas City. It was the best place for a taxi since it had a busy nightlife, nothing like Lebanon, but it helped make him good money if he had to drive people home or the airport. On this particular evening, the last thing Dean ever expected was to run into someone that would change his life forever.
As he waited for a customer, he tried to relax in silence. If he couldn’t drive anyone, he’d have to find a different route to pick people up. But at this time of night, it was almost impossible to find people who would use his services on a Tuesday. He was about to doze off when the back door slammed closed, making him jump.
“Drive,” the voice called urgently.
“Woah,” Dean lifted his hands, “hold on, now,” he turned around and froze for a second, seeing the gorgeous eyes of the woman in his back seat. “I gotta know where you’re going, ma’am.”
“I just need you to drive,” she said urgently. “I’ll pay you whatever it costs. I just--”
She was interrupted by the sound of a gunshot and glass shattering.
“Holy shit,” Dean let out as he began to drive away from the scene.
“After them!” a voice shouted. “She has the documents!”
Dean used the rearview mirror to look at the woman in his back seat.
“Who the fuck did you piss off?” Dean yelled as he sped off in the Impala.
“The less you know, the better,” she let out and reached into her purse. “Here’s 5 grand. Take me as far as you can with this.”
Looking around him, Dean made his way towards the motel room where he was holed up with Y/N, the woman who got into his cab that night. He learned a few things as he stuck with her. There was something about her that made him not want to leave her alone. That and the fact that Sam worked with the DA was a big help. He was sure his brother was going to be involved in this one way or another.
Walking into the room, Dean tilted his head when he saw Y/N packing up.
“Going somewhere?” he asked.
“I already troubled you enough,” she said as she turned to face him. “It’s been two months. You have a family and a job. I can’t--”
“Look, I could have left that first night,” Dean let out as he took her bag from her. “But I saw how you were shakin’, and that window I had to fix didn’t sit well with me.” he crossed his arms and leaned on the small table of the room. “Now, you going to tell me the whole story, or am I gonna have to piece it together?”
“I got you in deep enough,” she huffed. “Thank you for getting me in contact with your brother. I’m sure I can make my way to the DA’s office and get into witness protection.”
“All the more reason for me to stick around.” Dean insisted. “That way, I’ll have some peace knowing you’re safe.”
“I already took you away from your work,” she continued to try to grab her bag from him.
“I’m a Taxi driver. I can drive my car with my license anywhere in the state,” Dean huffed. “I’m sticking with you. I can tell you can’t do this alone, so at least let me help.”
Y/N walked into the empty warehouse, the drive she was desperately trying to protect around her neck. Her hand clutching it tightly as if it would protect her from harm.
“See,” a voice said from within the depth of the shadows. “You can follow directions.”
“I was always able to follow directions, Michael,” Y/N snapped back. “I just had the right sense to tell good directions from bad ones.”
“Now, if you want your new boy toy back,” He said, walking into the light dragging a bloodied and beaten Dean, “Then you are going to hand over the drive. No tricks.”
Y/N took a deep breath before she took her steps towards Michael and Dean. Michael had Dean’s mouth taped with duct tape, hands tied behind his back. Y/N took in the injuries Dean sustained. She could see various cuts and bruises on his face and a large bloodstain on his right side.
“Here’s your stupid drive,” Y/N said, pulling the drive from around her neck and holding it out. “Whatever you are doing is not going to help you. It’s only going to make things worse, Michael.”
“That’s what your father said before I killed him,” Michael chuckled. “And yet you don’t seem all that surprised.”
“I found out the night I stole the drive,” Y/N huffed. “I saw all the documents, Michael. Eventually, it’s all going to come back to catch you.”
“Yeah,” Michael said with a shrug, “but not today. See, I’m going to kill Mr. Taxi Driver here, and then you and I are going to hop on a jet to the Caribbean.”
“Yeah,” Y/N sighed, “I don’t think so.”
Michael was about to ask her what she was talking about when Dean broke free of his restraints and tackled him to the ground.
“FBI asshole,” he smirked, “Been chasing you down for a while, Mikey.”
After Michael was carted away by other agents, Y/N walked over to the ambulance where EMTs were tending to Dean’s wounds.
“I guess I owe you and your brother a big thank you,” She said with a smile. “So you were FBI, huh?”
“Your Dad had contacted us before he was murdered,” Dean admitted.
“Still, thank you,” Y/N repeated, leaning over to kiss his cheek.
“You know,” Dean said, holding her hand just as she tried to walk away. “We could get to know each other some more. The case is over and well--”
“Are you asking me on a date?” Y/N asked, a smile adorning her face.
“I mean, if you want,” Dean shrugged, his thumb caressing the back of her hand.
“I think I can fit you into my schedule,” Y/N teased.
Dean let out a laugh before groaning in pain. Y/N, of course, fawning over him. Needless to say, it was the start of a great relationship.
