Time to replay the EW Tank Role Quests, which solidify my theory that all of Gridania is in a conspiracy to not tell the WoL what the Keeper of Entwined Serpents's name is. WoL wasn't paying attention the day they were introduced, or they forgot, and it's been a game of name chicken since. It's a hard and fast Eorzean rule, Lyse has made sure the rest of the Alliance is in on it, how long until WoL cracks and asks?!
--
Seriously, SE, we have known this man for years, he features in Kan-E's ARR leader story, is at her side in Ala Mhigo, the Role Quests, and several holiday stories where his crush on the Seedseer is super apparent, what is his name?

Timeline: Early 2.0, Gridania quests
Mayhem has just proved their worth as an adventurer, and Kan-e-Senna has a bold offer to make in a show of respect.
“Though you’ve been away for some time, I’m sure a child of the forest can’t have forgotten the Greenbliss festival,” the elder Seedseer explained sweetly. “In thanks for your efforts, I would ask that you fulfill the role of Emissary in the ceremony. Would you do this for me?”
“Me?” Mayhem was startled by the request to say the least. The Emissary of the Greenbliss ceremony was humanity’s representative to communicate with the elementals; to play this role before the population of the capital and not some outlying village’s version would be a great honor, certainly. But there would be talk: unlike some adventurers, a Moon Keeper was not truly an outsider to the forest, but neither were they welcomed by the people of the city. Their traditional hunting activities were seen as disruptive and likely to call down the elementals’ wrath, never mind that those traditions had existed for as long as Gridania had, and the Miqo’te clans who practiced them had never been wiped out by the Greenwrath.
Mayhem had no particular interest in being a part of traditional Moon Keeper culture themself, but the citizens of Gridania would have no way of knowing that. For Kan-e-Senna to put them on the stage and declare them as worthy of being Emissary as any other citizen of the forest was a bold and controversial move, and as they met her eyes, Mayhem could see a determination that said she knew exactly what she was doing. “You’re sure of this,” they said, less in question and more in confirmation. “You want a Keeper of the Moon to represent Gridania.”
“If you’re willing,” she nodded firmly. “I know what I’m asking, and you’re free to refuse if the spotlight is too much - but I was given to understand you’re a performer, yes?” Her smile sharpened just a little. “I believe such a show of unity will guide public opinion to be more gracious toward those who have been excluded in the past. Won’t you help me put one on?”
Mayhem grinned back at her just as sharply. “Who am I to decline such an honor from the Elder Seedseer herself? I’d be delighted.” Just imagining all the sour-faced traditionalists in the audience would be more than enough motivation.

FFxivWrite2024 Prompt #29 (Free)
Title: Changing Tack
Wordcount: 1150
Spoilers through: Shadowbringers 5.4
Relationships & Characters: Merlwyb/Kan-E
Summary: When the Admiral receives a message from the Elder Seedseer taking her to task for her reckless actions, she knows how to read between the lines.
(I really enjoy the variety of women FFXIV has, and therefore the variety of relationships I’ve gotten a chance to write this month. There’s everything from innocent new crushes to complicated old tangles like where I went with this! :D)
.
“Letter for you, Admiral. From the Elder Seedseer.” The Grand Storm Marshal handed over the sealed envelope after knocking twice on the door to the command room.
The admiral of the great ship Limsa Lominsa raised an eyebrow at the neat, rounded script. A personal letter, then, not one dictated. “Already written, has she? News does travel fast these days.” Merlwyb gave a sharp nod. “Thank you, Marshal. I’ll read it at once. Can’t be too careful with those Garlean towers looming over the horizon.”
Her second in command tossed off a quick salute, then headed to the lift as the admiral prized the seal off with her knife and limped back to her desk. With a grimace, she sat back down and rubbed at her injured leg. She’d gotten lucky the other day with the kobolds. Very lucky indeed. A few gashes and bruises were a pittance to pay for a fresh start to negotiations between them.
Now then. The letter.
“My dearest Merlwyb,
Have you perchance taken leave of your senses?! Even I should not dare walk into a nest of tempered sylphs, and I count their elder amongst my closest allies. To wager one’s life upon the whims of an enemy with naught but a handful of adventurers at your back was a recklessness unbefitting of the steady hand with which you’ve steered your nation!
Did you not think to call upon Gridania’s conjurers? Full gladly would I have lent mine Adders’ assistance to the cause of peace. Had you but sent word more, our finest healers - in whose number I myself include - would have been at your prompt disposal.
Merlwyb let out a hearty chuckle. Despite her counterpart’s flowery language and excuses about responsible governance, the true message was clear: Kan-E, Navigator bless her adventurous heart, was hopping mad she’d missed all the fun and fireworks.
Nevertheless, though I must needs condemn your thoughtless methods, I do greatly applaud the results of your efforts. I had feared your determination to stay the course of violence would preclude any cessation of hostilities within our lifetimes. But I see now that the rock of your convictions may be weathered by the gentle river of my persistence…
Oho. Not so angry she couldn’t feel smug, then. Trust the girl to be too sweet and polite to say “I told you so,” in that many words, but aye, she was thinking it. And truth be told, Merlwyb deserved it! Many a night she’d argued with the seedseer until she’d been blue in the face that her calls for negotiation and compromise would never come to pass.
But here Merlwyb was, gambling her life and legacy to make Kan-E’s wish happen.
Mayhap, then, I have a chance to persuade you on the matter of our second longstanding disagreement. Thus do I remind you: my invitation remains ever-open, awaiting your reply. Should you find yourself in want of the succor and safety of Gridania’s bosom, the Twelveswood welcomes you with open arms.
And there it was. Merlwyb sighed ruefully and sat back. Kan-E chided her for her recklessness now, but in times long past, that accusation had held far more weight.
In those times, Merlwyb had been a different woman. A woman who’d seen Gridania as merely another ship to be plundered, a target which had much vexed her with its impenetrable supernatural defenses.
A woman who had, once the Elementals saw fit to appoint a new seedseer, made a point of stealing away with their treasured Hearer’s heart.
Or, should your mind be seized by yet another bold whim, you could do far worse than to counter mine invitation with a proposal of your own. You have taken the first steps towards mending relations between the peoples of your lands, but what of those beyond Vylbrand’s shores? A more permanent and stable arrangement between us, regardless how inelegantly advanced, could prove far more beneficial to our citizens and the Alliance than our wont to tiptoe around the buried rot left by our feckless histories.
And Kan-E had welcomed it. For all that the Elementals’ role for her shackled the girl to the Twelveswood, her letters never failed to overflow with a desperate wanderlust and longing for freedom. Their brief tryst had but heightened these waves of desire in Merlwyb’s wake.
Of course, Kan-E would never leave her woods, no matter how thinly she concealed her fantasies of being spirited away as a dashing admiral’s bride. But neither would Merlwyb leave her fleet.
Indeed, the metaphors practically wrote themselves. The sea was in Merlwyb’s bones. Putting down roots simply wasn’t in her nature. She’d charted her voyage, and the seedseer hers, and apart from those fleeting nights of moonlit passion, their routes were not like to meet again.
All I ask is that you give mine suggestions the consideration they are due. As the Seventh Astral Era waxes and the long shadow of Garlemald’s empire wanes, we find ourselves with a bounty of opportunities to begin relations anew. Why should we let paths unwalked still define the contours of our futures, when we instead have this chance to forge a fresh path together?
Surely it couldn't work. As nice as Kan-E made the idea of quickening the embers of their old love sound, they were both mature women with bustling city states to run and interminable politics to navigate. It was one thing to speak of beginning relations anew, but in these days of calamity and war, when had they last had but a single moment to discuss aught beyond official Alliance business?
Given enough time, Kan-E would realize a youthful indiscretion did not the foundation of a fruitful relationship make. The healer would learn to mend her own heart. She had to know Merlwyb had taken many lovers since, some for the span of a night, some for the span of years.
…Although it was true Kan-E was the singular soul who’d kept writing. Who had, as the seasons cycled again and again, never quite left Merlwyb’s thoughts.
A gentle river, eh? Compared to the stormy winds Merlwyb surrounded herself with, that soft pull should have held no bearing upon her heading. And yet…
As such, when next you are unoccupied by urgent matters of state, I would much like to discuss the momentous developments of late in person. Or perhaps diplomatic topics of a more discreet nature, should you find yourself amenable to mine desire for a more enduring friendship between our nations.
May the Twelve keep you always,
Kan-E-Senna
A short visit couldn’t hurt, Merlwyb decided. Just a courtesy call, to ensure Gridania’s overtures to its neighbors were going as well as Limsa’s.
And if she just so happened to make time afterwards indulge in Kan-E’s ideas of discreet diplomacy? Well, Limsa had changed its tack to fit the new wind blowing, so perhaps this old pirate could too.

opinion on your ff14 woman you know the one
i think i can safely bet this is about kan-e-senna.🤡
so without furder ado:
listen to me. listen. i love her. all the criticism she and gridania get is warranted and was largely covered multiple times by people more eloquent than me so i'm not gonna talk about it here.
but. i feel like players are exaggeratedly mean about kan-e-senna sometimes
"she's a passive coward" she founded the eorzean alliance. and because i just did it again and have the screenshots on hand, here's her final decision concerning gaius' ultimatum before he invades eorzea:
she's the FIRST LEADER to (in a decisive moment where she gets up and grabs her staff, reassuming her role) admit surrendering to the empire is a bad idea. most of all, she interacted closely with the previous warriors of light; and after carteneau, SHE was entrusted with their legacy and louisoix's. she CAN'T surrender if only for that.
i don't think she's meant to be an *active agent* in the sense she will never be raubahn running through a battlefield (although from what i've heard she WILL throw herself in the melee in the EW master rolequests). but throughout the game she has a catalyst role. she creates the alliance. she invites the other leaders to continue the fight when faced with an ultimatum. she is the first character to somewhat read what's going on with thancred's soul which will launch the events of shb. it's her who welcomes fourchenault in gridania, which will launch the events of endwalker.
but she *wants* to be an active agent in the story, because she DOES want to act when needed. whether she actually can or not is another problem and the root of many of gridania's issues.
she wants to help the people, but is completely blind to their problems because she spends her days in the lotus stand. she wants to travel, but she can't, because she has to help her people, by... spending her days in the lotus stand. there's an irony here that i absolutely adore.
the EW tank rolequests really highlighted this contradiction in her character imo. she's supposedly a good orator and kind leader, with a voice clear as day, but it doesn't show. so the people and the forest suffer more than they should and so does she - because of the pressure she's under. the very stupidity of gridania's immobilism (caused in part by kan-e's inability to act) manifested in the form of her childhood best friend turned beast (who, btw, should have become the elder seedseer. sudden pressure put on her after his disappearance) and the illusion of a plague spreading through the forest. it doesn't get more straightforward as a metaphor.

FFXIVWrite 2024 #25: Perpetuity
(A/n: Breaking news, the tank quest have no longer been left on read! I just didn't have a clue what to do to introduce these quests, and the few prompts I kinda thought I could use for tank quest writing, I either didn't have a solid idea to write or I didn't have time before the deadlines on the days. But i have something now, Thancred and Kan-E have not been fogotten about. \o/
The prompt made me think of Dawntrail originally and Sphene, but I'd already written a piece for them the other day and now I'm aware the month is almost over and I have things I really want to write and see finished. :'D But when I thought on it with a friend and realising I hadn't done any tank quest yet, I realised the Padjal could almost indirectly, or by public perception being considered "Eternal". So it was close enough to be inspiration.
Definitely an idea I could expand on further with edits and more chapter writing if I put this on Ao3 after the month tho.
Word count: 1128)
Kan-E was supposed to be resting, regaining her strength in preparation to face Gleipnir again. Instead, she was out wandering the less trodden paths of Gridania, taking in the forest’s sounds around her. To hear the faint rustling of the leaves and divine the Elemental’s hidden thoughts and feelings on the wind.
“You’re rather far from your bed, my lady,” a voice sounded out behind her. She turned, hardly startled by Thancred’s appearance.
“I decided to take a walk. Taking in fresh air is good for patients, yes?”
“Aye for normal people. One such as yourself is more attuned to the whispers of the forest, surely it’s more overwhelming than soothing.” He folded his arms and gave her a look - evidently not a judgemental one, but clearly still giving her the choice if she was going to push back on his word.
Kan-E was grateful for the choice at least, because she did find her shoulders slacken once she realised she wasn’t under scrutiny.
“Perhaps. Though forgive me if the forest is better company than the fretting of the infirmary staff. I’ve grown accustomed to Their voices after all,” she said, eyes turned up to look through the boughs overhead. She heard him let out a small laugh under his breath.
“I understand. Though your Keeper is especially at his wits end worrying about you. In fact with you having stepped away he’s probably close to having a fit now not knowing your whereabouts. Maybe we should take you back just to settle him and everyone else down,” he suggested.
She could ask to wait, take a moment more to settle her thoughts or prepare for the onslaught.
“I’m afraid to say you’ll need to show me the way back - I got awfully lost trying to find you my lady, as out of the way as this part of the city is. And you know me, Gridania was never my territory. So many winding streets, it's easy to take a little longer getting places,” he suddenly added, and when Kan-E cast a confused look his way, she saw the look in his eye and the quirk of his lips - somehow both sly in his word and reassuring in his expression. She smiled.
“Well, I shall try my best if I remember the way my feet took me. Let’s go then.”
They fell in step together, deliberately taking a left when it should’ve been a right. It was just a slightly longer route after all.
They walked in silence, allowing Kan-E to gather her thoughts and think on what she wanted to do going forward with their current situation. Knowing the circumstances now of their blasphemy gave her some idea of what they could do, but not much.
And it seemed Thancred always had a knack for knowing what she was thinking about, bringing it to the fore for them both.
“I’m sure this must hurt, knowing now it was someone you knew personally.”
“In my youth, I knew him. We haven’t had contact since, with my responsibilities and…what happened to him,” she sighed, “I feel some guilt that I couldn’t speak on his behalf at the time. But to speak against the Elementals…it isn’t done. Especially not by a child.”
“E-Sumi-Yan couldn’t speak in his favour either, and he has many more years on you.”
“I just dread to think of what could’ve pushed him to this. To have lost his purpose in life, that he was willing to dedicate himself with such fervour, and now I can’t even know what in his personal life may have caused him further despair to make him turn.” Her fists tightened as she spoke, frustration bleeding in every word.
“I’m sure we’ll find out eventually. And I can assure you, we’ll bring him peace,” Thancred said, offering a brief pat to her shoulder, still striding alongside him. However she stopped abruptly instead, making him turn back to look at her.
“Peace…would his soul find its way to the aetherial sea as he is now? Would his aether return to the forest? I would hope that even if the Elementals denied him his duty as a Padjal, they would accept him as a resident of the forest, with all the work he continued to do for them.”
This time it was Thancred’s turn to look away.
“We don’t know that, I’m afraid to say. The nature of these beasts is still…difficult to ascertain,” he answered. Kan-E’s lips pressed firm together into a thin line, already surmising what he didn’t want to tell her.
“I see.”
If I would tell you one thing though,” he said, turning back to her, “do not let yourself feel remorse for this. Even should you carry his memory with you, let it embolden you rather than weigh you down. You’ll have many years to come, and many duties to fulfil, you can’t let one instance hold you back.”
“We Padjal are hardly immortal,” Kan-E countered, though she was already beginning to smile again at his words, “Though you are right. I know this. It’s just difficult at the moment.”
“Well, special duty or no, you’re still human like all the rest of us. The Elementals can’t take that from you.” Thancred then held out a hand in offering, to which she took it and they continued on their way, her holding onto his arm as he led the way. Again, initially in silence, until she asked.
“You speak from experience, don’t you?”
“Don’t we all?” Then he offered another one of his winning smiles, and added, “All the better to take this old man’s advice then before you outgrow me yet.”
Kan-E shook her head.
“Indeed, your wisdom matches that of E-Sumi-Yan,” she said, trying to match the wit in his tone, “He who still has much to teach me, yet I’m sure you have something he could never impart.”
“Well we all have different lived experiences,” was all he could reply with, when a loud shout cut through their jovial banter. The frantic cries for Kan-E by her title, until the Keeper of the Entwined Serpents turned from around a tree trunk, searching for them.
“Elder Seedseer, where ar- There you are!” He was already thundering toward them, even as he clearly looked frantically out of breath.
“It seems our walk must end here,” Thancred sighed, already loosening their entwined arms, “Though I hope it helped clear your mind somewhat.”
Kan-E kept hold of his hand a moment longer, appreciating the way it grounded her. And while her guard was yet a few strides away, she nodded and replied that only Thancred and the forest would hear.
“I may not know what our next step is, but I feel more ready to face it than before.”

We have been invited to a meeting of representatives of all the Alliance nations and the beast tribes.
(Wow, I wish the game would give me a better word to use, feels like a slur to call them "beasts". Also, though I realize them being 3d models would make this difficult, they should really be offered a seat at the table - literally - to make this feel like we actually respect them as equals. Having them stand at one end feels... not right.)
And the meeting is fine and dandy, and we agree to form The Grand Company of Eorzea, and Kan-E-Senna asks Alphinaud to write up a report covering his experiences with the Crystal Braves and and and none of that matters because THIS BASTARD showed up!!
I have slain gods who had committed lesser crimes than the words you just said to your children.
I don't care about the Final Days anymore; Zenos and Fandaniel can go bring about the end of the world and dance in the ashes for all I care. THIS bastard is my new target. I will make you eat those words Fourchenault Leveilleur. You should be ashamed of yourself, and as Hydaelyn is my witness I will make sure you are.
*mutters darkly*
You have a clearer head than I, G'raha, I don't remember what he said besides his being an insufferable git. If the Forum wanted to distract me, that was a masterful way to do it. I'm still fuming.
Oh dear. Looks like Fandaniel is leading a force to Carteneau. I wonder if Zenos will be accompanying him?
But before we can leave on the airship, Fordola meets us and insists we must come with her.
Oh Arenvald, I am so sorry. Is it your legs or your back? I'm sorry. How rude of me. I am glad to see you alive.
Arenvald can fight no longer, so he looks to Alphinaud to carry on where he cannot. Alphinaud doesn't feel like much of a hero, nor is he sure that he is the right person for the job, but Arenvald gives him a pep-talk and we go.
Arenvald is obviously feeling very depressed about the loss he's suffered, but I am glad he has Fordola there for support (Ship it? Ship it). And I am glad it seems that, while he might no longer be able to wield a sword, he's not out of the fight just yet. I am... potentially hopeful we might see some good disability representation through him? It's already refreshing to see the idea that being disabled makes you useless so clearly and strongly rebutted.
Aaaaaaa! Who are you making me fight as this time!?
Okay but I want those little figures. Please. Let me buy the whole set and put them on my desk.
We gotta defend the aetheric confluence. This was painful. I am unskilled with these fights. Especially the one where I had to be Urianger. PAIN.
(Fuck yes Ravana. My favorite primal!)
Please no, Fandaniel. I don't need another homoerotic violence friendship. There is only room in my heart for one muderboyfriend.
We won the day, and, while we could not save them all, we saved some. And that will have to be enough.
I think this is hope.
Yesss thank you game for appreciating my desire to make that man pay.
Omg omg is that a scythe!? Is Zenos a Reaper now? Haha sweet.
Um. What's that spiky edifice behind you there? Also, I just noticed there appear to be ruins of buildings everywhere?
Oh yeah. That's gotta be the main tower that Thancred and Urianger espied in Garlemald. Or the final boss' lair. Possibly both. Spooky fucking thing, regardless.
Opposite of hope?
Ooooo!
I kinda adore you, Zenos. You crazy bastard. I think you've fallen for me and don't know what to do with that, so express it the way you express everything else: violence!
We have assessed the aetheric currents, and determined that the towers are being fueled by drawing upon the lands' aether directly. We must inform our allies of this.
But then...
Hydaelyn?
Hydaelyn!?!? After all this time, what brings you to speak with me? To send an avatar of yourself here?
Oh shit. That's not good. Can you be a little more specific?
Oh dear.
Aaand nobody else saw the glowing lady.
Oooh and now the spooky moon is over us too.
And with that. I believe I have reached the end of Shadowbringers. The greatest expansion so far. I don't feel prepared to sum up an experience as profound as this was. Fantastic game. I am eager to get playing Endwalker.
