Take Me Home Now: Chapter Four
Chapter Four: But You See, it's Not Me
Set after the events of ME3.
A rewrite. Ao3.
FemShepxKaidan
"Get down! Get down! Get down!" Jane screamed as she charged across the field.
The blast rippled through the air, a torrent of flame following imperceptibly behind it, and with that sudden friction came the force of the explosion. Rubble, stones, dust, and ash flung across the square seconds after the detonation. Terse silence, then relief.
"Recruit!" the Lieutenant called, emerging from behind the barrier, "holy hell, Recruit?"
He scanned the intersection, frowning as the haze of ash obscured his vision. But it wasn't long before coughing guided him forward to his curled-up Recruit. One now covered in ash and with a few extra gashes but seemingly no worse for the wear. Those bright blue eyes looking more out of place against the black and grey backdrop of soot and crimson.
"I think we played that one a little close," he wavered on the humorous tone. Fighting their own wasn't comfortable for most soldiers, even if they had made it abundantly clear they were the enemy.
Jane grinned up at him, "I usually am not the charge setter. I just like the boom."
Fair enough. Perhaps he should have never questioned her mettle, the woman chomped on the bit to destroy this outpost the second she saw the gem-like logo tagged on the side of the building. Roy knew she had killed other humans since the Reapers were defeated, but seeing her ease at doing so in person was another matter. Most of his men, and himself, balked at the idea after weeks of working together against the Reaper threat. Now it was over -it felt sacrilegious to kill another member of his race... it was the first time he had killed another man. But here Jane was, taking it in stride, almost seeming to take it with gayety he couldn't fathom.
"That must be the human with the quad," for a hulking creature, the Krogan leader could be quite mellow at times, for what was expected out of him.
Strangely enough, Jane didn't share that same sentiment. She cowed in her own way, backing from the open hand that Wrex offered to her. Wrex instead lifted her by the arm, pulling the female in for closer inspection. The red eyes roved over her face and features, looking for something that he ultimately decided was not there. The Krogan set her down with a gentle jostle.
"Heh, I must still have my charm."
His recruit fought a wistful smile.
~~~ ~~~ ~~~
The cold night air prickled her skin, raising the fine hairs across her forearm. Her gaze followed it down and to the ground in the space between her crossed legs. It felt less immense looking at this space rather than up at the terrible presence that loomed over herâwaiting to devour her.
"How does it feel to be invisible?" the mechanical voice now a caress gently easing into her thoughts, "those you called friends can't recognize you anymore."
She wasn't invisible, just tired. Scared. Lonely. Lost. Everything the Commander didn't feel.
"What is the legendary Commander without biotics? Fodder."
Each attempt she had made had wound up in her losing time. Each subsequent try meant more time and a migraine that intensified. If the migraine ever truly left the lingering stage, but it was something she knew better than to complain about. Nobody needed a reason to worry about her or find another reason to treat her like an outsider. That she couldn't complain about, she hadn't tried hard to be friendly. Instead preferring to remain on the periphery.
"Or is the legend of Shepard over? The husk that you are can't compare."
Or was it easier to relax? To let the burden fade from her shoulders? The crushing weight of everyone's hopes had been too much. Sleepless nights, nightmares, and anxiety permeated every aspect of the Commander's life. Questioning if she had done enough for the war effort, the sewage of her worries toxifying each moment of peace. Guilt over her time in Cereberus still proving to be a hurdle in any reconciliation of her being a basically good person.
It was a little easier being Jane. Not much was expected of her.
"Or are you the vessel of her guilt? The long-overdue penance for her crimes."
Most saw Shepard as the hero. But only because they didn't see the evils she had caused. Colonies. Planets. Friends. Synthetics. Her unit on Akuze. All gone because of her choices. Nobody had time during the war to examine the consequences of her actions. Would they not see them if Shepard simply died on the Citadel? The blame left to some figure that had at least the good sense to atone by dying for the galaxy?
It didn't make her choices better.
But it was less blame to assign to her.
"Whatever you are now isn't worthy of being deemed 'Savior.' You rejected your friend because you feared the face he would see, the nothing you are now."
"I see we're revisiting Harold," the warm voice a sudden break from the cold metallic," I don't understand it, this thing gives me the heebie-jeebies."
Roy's hand on her shoulder a strange grounding back into reality, back into the frigid night air. Her head turned to glance at him, as usual, he softly smiled, amber eyes viewing her with a hint of concern. A familiarity that thawed some of her walls.
"It's also freezing out here, but leave it up to you to be sitting out here. Alone," the chuckle arriving before his teasing, "brooding."
Jane huffed.
Roy's finger stroked the underside of her newest scar that ran along her chin; it was a curious thing with a slight glow, "you need to get this thing checked."
"Thanks, Dad."
"Finally, some respect."
"Don't let it fool you."
The LT sighed heavily in return, turning his head to the Reaper with a reflexive frown," Now, tell the Recruit to stay put for a moment."
Jane hadn't intended to move, but welcomed the checkered blanket that was placed tenderly around her shoulders all the same. Roy placed himself facing her, blocking out the view of the Old Machine. A green bottle finding its way into her hands.
"I can't take this."
"You're not taking it. You're helping me drink beer," he returned smoothly. Extending out his own drink in a toast.
"Well, what do you suggest?" her favorite person murmured. His eyes darting over her lips, but they only ever rested on her eyes. Inviting; her call to calm.
"I can't think of anything better than this moment right now," Mary lost her fight to keep his gaze, her cheeks dusting in red. The possibility of this vulnerable moment turning reared in her head.
"Shepard," Kaidan purred against her lips, pulling her form flush into him, "Shepard."
He didn't move to push the feathery kisses into serious territory, instead enjoying the closeness the two of them rarely got to enjoy. This openness was the prime offering, the exposed throat to be protected. Even rewarded in a way Mary wouldn't see as patronizing.
"Kaidan," Mary muttered, his name dropping as her vocal cords seized.
Kaidan would wait as many beats as she needed.
"This feels almost normal."
His rumbling laugh came fluidly, "what do I need to do to make this normal, normal? Besides ridding the universe of the Reapers, and singlehandedly wiping out Cerebrus."
The Commander considered it for a long moment, "you know that really uncomfortable position where I lay on your arm? I think that would feel more normal."
"Alright, Shepard," Kaidan returned with a grin, scooching both of them awkwardly until he laid on his side and Mary's head rested on his forearm, "anything else?"
The woman grinned bashfully, "no."
"Because you forgot the crappy vid, but it doesn't matter; we wouldn't have watched it anyway," his finger traced across the ridge of her nose.
"Why? Would we too busy, getting busy?"
He laughed again, "maybe. But you don't like to be still that long. You know, you'd have to learn to sit down and watch a vid with me one day."
"If you could refrain from making comments the entire time," Mary retorted smugly.
"Heh." There was a hesitation.
"If you've got something to say to me, Alenko."
His finger gently drew lines between the paths of her freckles, formulating the right words and deciding on a path between his hopes, "sounds like you are planning on keeping me around."
"I-," the sole thing keeping her head from turning away was the hand that cupped her cheek, "I'd like to learn to be normal with you. To have a regular life... with you. Christmases, birthdays... fucking Easter."
Kaidan knew he grinned like an idiot, his cheeks hurting from the width of his smile.
"Hey, kid, you look a little lost there," Roy called, snapping his fingers.
"Oh," she put the bottle to her lips, the somewhat warm liquid coating her mouth, "sorry."
He shrugged nonchalantly, taking his own generous sip. Overlooking the woman curiously.
"LT, I appreciate this, but," Jane struggled with the words, with the absolute coldness she was displaying, "why are you doing this?"
"It's Christmas," Roy stated simply.
So it was, "I'm sure you have better company. Even others that had invited-"
"I did, but don't make this isn't all about you," Roy had his own troubles. Most of them the people that clamored for his attention. Jane wasn't like that, he found her near hostility refreshing. A good break from the worries of being a caretaker for everyone in the building before him. Jane didn't ask for anything. "I am still not convinced I was the one most suitable to speak with that Krogan, Wrex. You seemed to get on with them."
"You got it done."
"We had an unlikely connection, and he's a reasonable person."
Jane shook her head, twisting and opening up her palms in a dismissive motion. Apparently, that was that and a done deal. Returning them to silence.
"I am curious, how does one know so much about aliens, guns, and farming?" He pressed after a moment. The finding of her knowledge of crops was the most surprising thing to learn about her to date. Not that she had deemed to share this openly; instead, he caught it by chance as the Salarian and the Recruit brainstormed the best irrigation and propagation methods with their limited supplies.
Jane's cheeks flushed, even in the dim light, "ahh, I had mentioned my parents were colonists, just not that they were farmers. I'm not an expert or anything. Being a teenager when they died, I had little real interest in it."
"And the aliens?" He wisely pushed away from the subject, already seeing the hints of her recoil. The bobbing of her throat becoming a recognizable tic.
"My postings saw me in diplomatic positions. I spent a considerable amount of time on the Citadel and visited most of the homeworlds of the major council species," Jane glanced to her right, a soft smile spreading on her face.
All considered this was a fucked time to be smiling. Upon further consideration, visiting wasn't the proper term either, she had been there to try and break a siege or to deal with some Reaper-related threat. The smile arose because of the memories of her crewmates, former and well... they were all former now.
"How did you end up so lucky?"
"Some hard work, but mostly luck," her expression darkened before returning to a neutral state.
He had so many more questions. But she had her reasons for not divulging further, for reasons nefarious or more likely classified, Jane kept mum. Pushing her further could only end in retreat.
"Any other fun talents you want to tell me about?"
"Nothing that entertaining," Jane chuckled, "though I'd like to know how you managed to stash beer."
Roy returned the chuckle with a wink, "my secret, Recruit."
"Fine," she smirked, "but what about you? I know you served, but what did you do before this?"
"I own an orchard. I used to be more involved with it. But as men my age do, we like to retire to a quiet life."
"So much for that," Jane murmured, earning another toast with the LT, "any family?"
"Yeah, an old lady, somewhere back home," Roy grew wistful, "I have a kid, too. Somewhere."
Jane knew that tone, the somberness a feeling she was only too familiar with. Much as he never asked about her troubles, she returned the favor. Most had lost something, if not everything in this short but brutal war.
The man picked himself up as he finished his beer, stashing both bottles into a pile of rubble to retrieve later.
"You should come back inside for dinner, word and smell is that someone made actual bread. Rolls."
Roy offered out his hand.
I had way too much fun with this one
AO3 or read under the cut âď¸
"Kaidan, think fast!" Lily shouted at her boyfriend, catching him off guard.
"What are you-ah!" He flinched and instinctively held up his shovel, stopping the snow ball from hitting him in the face.Â
"Nice reflexes babe!" Lily called as she crossed the street.
"Uh thanks?" He responded, confused as she ran over "what are you doing?"Â
"Practicing." She answered, picking up rocks and placing them in a pouch.Â
"Practicing" He asked, even more confused.
"For the local snowball fight," she said holding up a rather sizable rock "I lace mine with rocks and haven't lost since."Â
"You...what?" He blinked.Â
Lily stood back up "Yeah, *pretty sure* I'm not supposed to but," she shrugged "no one has stopped me yet."Â
"Likely because you haven't been caught." Aiden said, joining them.
"Well there's that too." She said, waving her brother off.
"Wait, hold on," Kaidan said, holding his hands up and drawing the attention of the twins "you have a yearly snowball fight?" He asked.Â
Lily and Aiden looked at each other and back at him, nodding "yeah?" They responded in unison.Â
"It's a last man standing kinda thing," Lily explained "hence the rocks." She said, holding the sack up.
"It's completely illegal so I just make sure she doesn't aim for anyone's face." Aiden looked over at her, brow furrowed "which is precisely why she never gets caught."
Lily leaned against him, smiling as innocently as possible "best big brother ever." She said, making him roll his eyes.Â
"So it's a town wide ordeal?" Kaidan asked, intrigued.Â
"Yeah! Everyone joins in," she paused.'' Well almost, obviously the older folks don't but there's still a pretty good turn out."
"Do you want to join Kaidan?" Aiden asked "there's no sign up sheet you just kinda show up."
Lily deflated "awwww, I guess that means no rocks this year." She said, dropping the sack on the floor and letting them spill onto the ground.
Kaidan snorted "sorry love."Â
Lily signed dramatically "Oh it's fine, all relationships require sacrifice after all."
Aiden shook his head at his sister's dramatics "so you'll be there?"Â
Kaidan nodded, "Sure, sounds fun."Â
Lily kissed him "but just remember, I'm not gonna be nice just because I like you." She winked.
Kaidan chuckled, "I wouldn't expect you to be babe."Â
---------
"Mom, dad?" Kaidan asked, surprised to see his parents setting up shop in the park.
"Oh hi sweetie!" His mother said, walking over to him.
"What are you two doing here?" He questioned.
"Since we can't participate we always set up our little booth here so we can still enjoy the festivities." His father explained from his chair.Â
Kaidan looked around the park and it looked like his parents weren't alone in that thinking. Every elderly business owner had set up food stalls and beverage stations. "So this is quite the event huh?"Â
"It is! I'm sure Lily explained it all to you didn't she?" His mother asked, setting up the canisters of coffee and various other hot drinks along with some baked goods.
"Well sure but this is like a sporting event." He gaped.Â
His mother giggled "we never do anything by halves in this town."Â
"Yeah, I'm starting to pick up on that." He chuckled.Â
"Kaidan!" Lily came up behind him, wrapping her arms around his waist, nearly knocking him over "you made it!"
Kaidan reached around to wrap his arm around her shoulders "someone's excited." He laughed.
"You're joining us right?" Lily asked, grinning up at him.
"Sure, go easy on the new guy though." He joked, leaning down to kiss her.Â
"Hmm we'll see." She replied standing up on her tiptoes to meet his lips.Â
---------
"Good to see everyone again for the Crystal Wood annual snowball fight!" The mayor announced, earning cheers from the crowd.
"I think it's cute how every year the same people participate to take me down, it's humbling really." Lily taunted.
The mayor rolled his eyes "yes Lily we know, you win every year."Â
She flipped her hair "just thought I'd give everyone a reminder."Â
Not that Lily wasn't a confident person, she very much was and Kaidan loved that about her but this was totally different. She was downright arrogant and most would probably be turned off but he kinda liked it.Â
Once the speech ended a whistle was blown and everyone scattered into different parts of the park. Taking cover behind trees or benches to safely build up their stash of snowballs.
If Lily was careful she could still use her rock method but she'd never forgive herself if her target dodged and the rock laced snowball hit Kaidan instead. "No...I can still win this." Lily muttered to herself. She wasn't going to embarrass herself like this. She hasn't lost since she was a teenager. That wasn't going to change.Â
Starting with her brother, Lily peaked from her cover "psst Aiden." She whispered.
"Yeah?" He answered, looking over at her and immediately being hit in the face with a snowball. Followed by the sharp blow of a whistle and a sigh from Aiden.
"Nice try Ai!" She cheered as if she wasn't the one who got him out.
"DamnâŚ" Kaidan said under his breath as he watched from behind a bush.
"Yeah, Lily is cut throat." Another disqualified contestant said on their way off the field "good luck."Â
"ThanksâŚ" Kaidan replied, Lily said she wouldn't go easy on him and it looks like she wasn't kidding.Â
Lily stuck her leg out and tripped a contestant who was, from what she could tell, running from another contestant. She could knock them both out if she was lucky.Â
Lily hit the downed contestant with a snowball to the back of the head and the other in the stomach, making them fall over like they've been shot.Â
"Damn you LilyâŚ" they cursed, voices muffled by the snow.
"Sorry!" She called, running to hide behind a tree.Â
After what felt like hours every other participant had been disqualified leaving only Kaidan and Lily.Â
"Honestly I didn't think it'd end like this," Lily said dramatically, looking away from him "I was hoping someone would take you out first and spare me the pain."Â
"I'm sorry Lil, I never wanted it to come to this." He said, playing along.
"It's okay, I'm just glad to have met you Kaidan." She said, both of them bending down to make a snowball.Â
"I'll always love you Lily." He said, raising up his arm to throw his snowball.
She threw her own snowball "And I you."Â
The park was deadly silent as they watched the pair make their declarations of love. Anxiously waiting to see who would go down first. When the referee blew the whistle allowing them to finally breathe.Â
"And once again, the winner is Lily Shepard!" He called and the woman in question stood up.Â
"You put up a good fight babe!" Lily called to her boyfriend as he brushed the snow off himself.Â
"Should've known I wouldn't stand a chance next to you." Was the game close enough that he could claim he let her win? Probably but he wasn't petty and based on the way she was taking people out left and right there's no chance anyone would believe him. Hell, he wouldn't believe him.
"And this concludes the annual snowball fight." The mayor announced, the crowd clapping despite not being even remotely surprised by the turn out.
"Aw don't worry babe, you might get me next year." She winked.Â
Kaidan snorted and kissed her head "I appreciate the vote of confidence Lil."
the things that matter.
SUMMARY. Commander Natalie Shepard has a bit of a history with her flight lieutenant, but they've long since worked through any lingering awkwardness. Mostly. When she and Kaidan go on a double date with Joker and his girlfriend, it leaves them all thinking about the past, what-ifs, and all the things that are most important. Inspired by a double date prompt. NOTES. nat belongs to @reagans-ramblings! thank you for letting me write about your beautiful bi shepard i love her so much now with an ao3 link! LINKS. [ AO3 ] [ FFN ]
Thinking back, Joker wasnât sure exactly whose idea it had been.
Setting up an elaborate double date between three of the galaxyâs busiest people and a woman whose job required her to be virtually impossible to track down was, strictly speaking, a terrible idea. Maybe Cal had suggested it, because she loved social shit like that. Or maybe he had, because social shit like that was a surefire way to convince Cal to take some shore leave on the Citadel. There was a pretty decent chance it had been Kaidan, for no other reason than Joker was more than willing to put some good-natured blame on the major. Hell, it mightâve even been EDI whoâd brought it up, and in that case he was just glad he wasnât on his way to meet her and Sam.
Although, awkward as EDI could be, a double date with her and the comm specialist could potentially be less awkward than a double date with Major Alenko and Commander Shepard â the now very pregnant Commander Shepard, who heâd once dated, and who his current girlfriend was definitely a little bit into.
Yeah, heâd rather take his chances with EDI and Sam.
But then his omni-tool chimed with a message from Kaidan saying they were running a few minutes late, and Joker typed up a reply that Cal was still MIA, and it was officially too late to back out. He fidgeted with his suit â again; it was only at the insistence of both Cal and Kaidan that heâd even agreed to wear it in the first place â and opened a vid call to Cal. âAny chance youâre still in another system? Running tragically late and weâll have to miss dinner?â
She laughed. âJust landed, unfortunately. Iâm on my way over.â
âAlright. See you then.â Not leaving the crew quarters just yet, Joker glanced reflexively over to where EDIâs display had once been. âEDI, let me know when Cal gets here.â
âOf course, Jeff. I can also alert the Commander with an updated estimation of your arrival, if youâd like.â
He groaned in response.
Fortunately for Joker, the Normandy was blissfully empty given that they were finally getting a rare bit of shore leave. Adams was still down in engineering, and he was pretty sure Tali and Traynor were both around somewhere, but with EDIâs help it had been easy enough to avoid them all evening. This whole ordeal â dressing up and looking presentable and going out to a fancy restaurant â was certainly not high on his list of ways he typically preferred to spend his time on the Citadel, and the last thing he wanted was to have to deal with comments from the rest of the crew.
But by the time heâd met Cal down in the CIC, heâd almost changed his mind about dressing up and going out; her short hair was combed back into its usual style, and she wore simple heels and a fitted suit with a black jacket and a crisp white shirt left partially unbuttoned, and she was quite possibly the best damned thing heâd seen since the start of the war. Or ever.
Joker pointed to her shirt. âYou missed one,â he said, clearing his throat as he tried to find his voice.
âI prefer to think of it as giving you a head start, you know, for later, but I can alwaysââ Cal moved to fasten another of the buttons, and he quickly retracted his statement.
âActually, on second thought, it looks great.â He paused, not bothering to hide how his eyes roamed across her figure. âYou look great,â he added, voice filled with sincerity, and emphasized the statement with a kiss, just a light brush of his lips against Calâs.
âI look fucking fantastic,â she shot back, stealing a quick kiss of her own, âand youâre not so bad yourself. But I was promised dinner, and company that I havenât spent the last four months with.â
He took her hand as she led him out through the main airlock and towards the skycar sheâd brought. âIs it that bad?â Joker frowned; Alliance special ops werenât easy during the best of times, but with the war, Calâs N7 training had been pushed to the limits. He knew it had been draining her, but the level of exhaustion in her voice was still unexpected.
She gave little more than a shrug in answer, climbing into the skycar and not surrendering Jokerâs hand even as she keyed in the location of the restaurant. âWar sucks and everythingâs classified.â Despite her words, Cal launched into a vague explanation of her most recent mission, detailing the soldiers sheâd lost and the relative lack of success theyâd had against the reapers. Joker chimed in where he could, adding sarcasm or supportive comments as needed., and Calâs mood had nearly lifted by the time they reached the restaurant.
They were the first ones there, and a quick message to Kaidan confirmed that it wouldnât be a long wait. The reservation was under Natalieâs name, and apparently being Commander Shepard meant no waiting in lines, because Joker and Cal were almost immediately led to a relatively secluded table near the back. The second couple joined them before theyâd even ordered drinks, and Joker wasnât sure whether he or Cal was being more obvious about their staring; heâd long since accepted that Kaidan would always manage to look unfairly handsome â and it didnât hurt that his suit actually looked like it fit â but it had been a long time since heâd seen Nat out of uniform and she was practically glowing, with her hair pulled up into an elegant bun and the contrast of the deep green of her dress against her warm brown skin.
âCalliope Olson.â Cal stood, just a bit too quickly, and held out a hand first to Kaidan, then to Nat. âJoker talks about you all the time.â
Nat raised one perfectly arched eyebrow as she sat across from Cal. âDoes he?â
It had been years since they were together â they were just kids on Arcturus, back then â but damn if it wasnât suddenly very, very awkward. Repressing the sudden urge to get up and head straight for the bar, Joker shrugged. âWhat can I say? Calâs a longtime fan of yours, and I aim to please.â Cal snorted at that, and Nat gave her a pointed, knowing stare; the urge to leave grew, and was accompanied by a rush of heat to his face.
âNo, heâs right,â Cal admitted as she recovered from her laughter. âIâve been following your career since Elysium. You caught my eye after Eden Prime,â she continued, turning towards Kaidan. âThe only biotic originally on board, and with the woman who would become the first human Spectre? Of course I was interested.â
The two shared a sidelong glance; Kaidan looked a bit overwhelmed, but Nat seemed to be thoroughly unimpressed. She got recognized far too often for Cal to even phase her. Joker, who was fairly certain that his attempt to disappear into his chair was not working, was nearly prepared to intervene â as much as he loved how excitable Cal could be about everything from Nat to sniper rifles to wheat fields, this was not a good time â but was saved by a waiter bringing their drinks. The conversation lulled, and after a moment Kaidan set down his whiskey and cleared his throat. âSo, Calliope, howâd the two of you meet?â
âHe doesnât shut up about you,â Nat interjected, sipping at her water, âbut none of us ever really paid attention. âIâve got a girlfriend, sheâs just involved with top secret Alliance missions and sheâs really hard to get a hold ofâ isnât exactly the most credible story.â
âJust Cal. And well, it was⌠actuallyâŚâ She trailed off, giving Joker a look that clearly said help; it was never easy to bring up the two years Nat had been gone, especially for those who hadnât actually discussed it with her before.
âIt was while I was grounded,â he offered, knowing Nat would catch his meaning. âWe were at a bar, she asked me to dance, I told her I didnât feel like breaking a femur.â He shrugged. âTypical meet-cute. You know.â
If Kaidan was shaken by the mention of Natâs death, he didnât show it. âSomehow, I donât have too hard of a time imagining that,â he said dryly, not quite rolling his eyes.
âWhat about you?â Cal asked, pausing to take a drink of whatever bright pink concoction sheâd ordered. âHowâd the two of you meet?â
Nat gave a flat, âMy father,â at the same time that Kaidan said, âA tech issue.â They both laughed, and Nat explained, âMy dad handpicked the original Normandy crew. He chose Kaidan specifically for his biotics, and Joker specifically to piss me off,â she added with a mock glare in his direction. âBut actually met face to face? That⌠yeah, I guess thatâs what it was. I had an issue with my omni-tool and Kaidan helped me work it out.â
âThatâs so much better than âwe saved the galaxy and they hooked up.ââ Cal emphasized the words with air quotes, tossing a teasing grin in Jokerâs direction.
âIn my defense, I did try my best to stay out of their way.â
With dinner out of the way â which, if Kaidan were being honest, hadnât gone as badly as heâd feared it might â the four of them began walking back towards Natâs apartment. It wasnât far, and the streets were quiet enough that there wasnât a need to get a cab. They were in no particular hurry to get back, and Kaidan walked with an arm around Natâs waist as they made their way through the Strip.
The bright spot of the evening, he thought, had been getting to spend so much time talking and reminiscing about their time on the SR-1, before things had gotten so damn complicated. Out of the frying pan and into the fire, as it were.
He watched as Cal and Joker walked a ways in front of them, hand in hand, laughter occasionally ringing out into the night. Kaidan had known that Nat and Joker had been together, before, but their double date had piqued his curiosity â less about the two of them, and more about Natalie, and how sheâd been when she was younger. He wondered if sheâd laughed more, back on Arcturus, back before sheâd fought her way to hell and back and returned triumphant. Before life had hardened her, before all the scars that he knew so well â the ones heâd once learned and re-learned, after Alchera, and the cybernetics from Cerberus that still sometimes flared up.
Kaidan wouldnât ever give up the woman Nat had become, but sometimes he still wondered.
âYouâre quiet tonight,â Nat observed with a tilt of her head, eyes searching his face.
âJust thinking,â he assured her.
âAbout?â
âYou.â He leaned over to place a light kiss on her forehead, right above her eyebrow, where he knew the bright lights of the Strip hid the soft glow of her cybernetics.
Nat gave a quiet laugh. âYouâve already got me, Kaidan, you donât have to butter me up.â
âMm. Let me enjoy it.â He fell silent for a moment, attempting to collect his thoughts; in front of them, Cal stripped off her jacket and tossed it at Joker, following it up with a less-than-subtle innuendo and laughter at his half-hearted protests. She wobbled a bit as she slid out of her heels, tucking them under one arm and falling back into stride with Joker. âItâs justâ Do you remember being that⌠carefree, I guess?â
âNo.â Her answer was automatic and unhesitant, but after a few moments she amended, âMore than now, maybe, but never entirely. Itâs been a long time since Iâve gone without some sort of weight on my shoulders.â
Kaidanâs only response was a thoughtful hmm as he considered all the things that had weighed her down over the years â himself included. He was under no illusion that the state of the galaxy was in any way his fault, but things couldâve perhaps been different if heâd been the one to receive the vision from the beacon on Eden Prime, all those years ago, instead of Nat stepping in because sheâd wanted to save him.
But maybe it didnât matter. Maybe it would always be complicated, and what mattered was being at Natâs side when those complications arose.
