A decidedly more somber picture this time, as well as my first attempt to layer some serious battle damage over the structure I use for the Toa. I've been doing some art for Hazash's Biowave project, which Kaibagal is also involved in. During some side conversation, she noted that a piece holding on her self-MOC Kalikiki's arm broke recently and Kal has had to go at it sans left arm for a while. This has now made its way somewhat gruesomely into her backstory; the arm was basically torn off by force in combat or something similar. I envisioned this as Kal the moment after combat, after the realization that part of her has literally been torn off and destroyed... I don't know, but I'd feel pretty awful after something like that, and either way I'm a sucker for dark stuff like characters being beset by serious issues and edgy pictures with overly dramatic lighting. So I drew Kal again. Something in the background is still on fire.

SOMEONE SHOULD WRITE THIS!!! WHO? BOTH? WHAT? 

We are reaching the climax of the story and there are fewer and fewer competitors out there. Atem and reader become more and more aware of each other, the TENSION IS RISING, with each week every watcher is on the edge of their seats, even the judges are casually asking when the first kiss will be: ‘I honestly was expecting the two of you to kiss when you dipped her down.’

But NO! They are staying professional there and there totally is nothing there between them, just that the hands are sweatier, but sweat is normal when you are dancing around like crazy, right? Right?!! 

Meanwhile Kaiba can foxtrot all he want, he can even start a strip tease, but the viewers want ROMANCE they are in it for the relationship development of four participants and the camera knows it. 

OOPS, they do as well and the more they hear about it the more embarrassed they get and the more they shy away from one another until, until... 

Atem and reader’s relationship gets so strained under all of the attention that their performance suffers from it. That lift ala Dirty Dancing fails, but luckily no major injuries (but not before a giant cliffhanger that has us all breathless and praying to whatever god there is in existence) and the two of them have to part. 

Now what? Atem and reader never met each other outside of the show, suddenly there is no reason for them to stay in contact. None at all, so why should they start now? Why are they aching? What? Huh? Noooo...

Kaiba is full of glee of course, he finally managed to beat Atem, but his dance partner is getting real sick of him and his lack of emotions and just in overall. When there is a Disney episode and Kaiba is whining how he isn’t a loser she actually explodes at him. #drama #tunein4more #kaibagate #Yuzu4thewin

Until the revival episode comes and the most popular pairing that got yeeted off the show get one more chance to compete. Atemm and reader meet again, that tension, that heartache, that sudden breath of air they gain when they gaze upon each other. 

Well, shoot. Distance does make the heart grow fonder. 

//backstage: “So how do you feel returning to this show? Are you confident? What do you think you need to improve to stay? What do you think caused you to be voted off?”

Difficult questions, heartfelt confessions. //gulps “I was too focussed on my own feelings...” or “I’m prepared to give it my all once more, and more.” 

Soft smiles, shy glances, and then they finally get to practice again. The other pairings all fall into each others arms excitedly, high fiving and yelling encouraging slurs. Not Atem and reader, they just stare at each other as if they are the only ones in the room, perhaps the world even. The camera loves it.

Of course they manage to get back into the race, much to Kaiba’s dismay, but also glee. Show was getting kinda boring without Atem to compete against, but his partner is still #salty.

Idk if anyone else here watches Dancing With The Star, but I do and right now I just keep thinking about an AU where Anzu, in all her professional dancing glory, becomes a pro dancer on the show and once the producers find out that she's friends with several popular duel monsters champions, including the king of games himself, they start trying really hard to get Yugi, Atem, maybe even Jonouchi and Mai to come onto the show. Like seriously, just imagine Atem dancing a tango with all his natural intensity or Yugi killing the quick step with all that cute energy.
