Reader carefully traversed the wet rocks as she made her way toward the water. The rush was intense, forcing Reader to close her eyes as he took them away from the shore, away from the civilization she knew and lived in day in and day out. It was nice to think about getting away from it all, even if for one night.

He swam deeper into the water. The pressure was mounting but before it could hurt, before her lungs could burn, Eli pivoted and swam into the mouth of an underwater cave. They swam the length of it in a matter of seconds, making it impossible to know how long it really was. Then he swam up and they were pushing their heads through the surface of water before she knew it.

Reader gasped as her head breached the surface. She panted hard, but smiled nonetheless at her merman partner, thrilled. She grabbed his face and kissed him heavily, exhilarated by the high speeds he managed the swim even though she did little more than hold on for the ride. It was still fun.

It was only when she pulled away from him did she realize they were in a small grotto of a cave. There was no opening leading outside or to land, but there were tall rocks for walls and an opening in the top allowing the moon to shine down on them. The rocks were decorated with all sorts of greenery, vines and flowers creeping up its walls as if one purposefully put them there. Knowing they were natural was part of their beauty in Reader's opinion.

"This place is beautiful," she said, a little starstruck.

Eli gently led her over to a small collection of rocks she could hold onto to rest, knowing her human energy wasn't the same as his. He kept a hand on her waist and his eyes on her the entire time, mesmerized by her. Her compliment only fueled him as the seasonal instincts were kicking in. "This is my home."

"You live here?" she asked, turning to look at him with wonder and happiness.

He nodded. "Well, it's part of my home. I live in the underwater alcove part of it, but this is my favorite place to come to when I'm thinking of you."

"I love you too," he told her, then shyly admitted, "I mean, I already thought of you as my mate."

She was flattered and hid her face in his chest. "Aww, that's pretty serious, huh?"

"The most serious thing any mer-person has to consider," he told her. He realized there was a lot of merfolk society that she didn't know. He'd always shared with her a part of his life but it was different to experience it, and now she could do that. Hell, he could finally introduce her to his friends and family. "There's so much I want to show you."

She looked up at him. "Well, then show me."

He pulled her impossibly close to his chest and shook his head. "Oh no, I'm not taking you out there right now. There's still merfolk on the prowl for a mate and I'm not letting them see you until you're full of my guppies."

He rolled over on top of her and she felt tingly below her hips. He pressed his tail against her and she moaned, feeling sensitive there. She was quickly growing needy as she realized that if she was a mermaid, the mating season probably affected her now as it did him. If you saw my last portfolio post where I briefly talked about how in a recent illustration drawing the kelp took me hours, this is the one.

Ever since starting my internship last September, all my creative energy had been going towards that. And now that I finished it at the end of May, it’s sent me into a huge creative block and burnout. Not just art block, I haven’t written anything either. Only in the past few weeks have I been getting back into creating.

Then there was Reader who worked her way into his heart from the moment they first meet. He still remembers the first time he saw her on the beach. In a cute little bikini on the shore, sticking to the shoreline. Dipping her feet in the cool water that washed up. She smiled as it tickled her toes.

“Hawk?”

“Don't worry no one comes out this way at night, not even the party kids that like to wreak the beach every now and then during the summertime. It's just us tonight.” He looked back at her as he neared the end of the cave. The blue lights from below lit up her face so beautifully.

Her eyes widen as she enters the very back of the cave. Lips parted in pure awe as she looked around the dark end. At the very back of the cave sat a large pool of water, hundreds of feet deep. The blue pulsing algae seemed to help keep that hidden as it lit up not only the empty room but throw off the deepness of the pool of water. From above you couldn't tell how deep it really was.

From the top of only looked a few feet maybe even shallow to some.

A tunnel of bright blue. The bright blue lights bounced off the dark cave walls and served as the only light the walls ever saw. It was truly breathtaking.

“Hawk this is beautiful!”

Hawk smiled a little before swimming into the pool of water in ahead. He dived down for a split second before resurfacing. Laughing out loud at her shocked reaction, he flicked his hair away from his face as he looked up at her. He bobbed around in the water as he watched her take everything in. Her eyes flickering between the walls and the illuminated pool. He cocked his head when she finally focused back on him.

“So you like it?”

“Hawk I love it! Do you come here a lot?”

“Kinda, sometimes I hang out in here during the daytime when I come to the surface. There is a waterway system below this pool that I use to swim a tight up into the pool so I don’t have to use the entrance. Don’t want to get caught by any humans while I’m up here you know.”

She giggled, knowing that he said that because she was the only human that caught him while going to the surface.

The cave was silent for a few minutes at the two took in their surroundings. The sound of water dripping tapped against the floors and walls. The occasion splash from Hawk. His tail steadily kept him afloat from below. Swishing back and forth to help him stay upright.

A few minutes passed in silence before Hawk coughed into his hand. With a gruff voice he said “So you coming in or what?” Reader looked at him before slowly nodding. She was slow to start taking off her top. Letting her curves free, her soft belly on full display for him. Her full tits practically trying to spill from her bikini top. He could tell she was getting a bit flustered as she looked away from him.

She suddred as she was engulfed by the water. Kicking around to get use to the new body of water which felt a little different then the normal ocean water outside. She wondered if it was due to the cave system messing with the water a little.

“Nice right?”

Hawk swam around her with a small smirk on his lips. His tail tickling her feet as he moved around het. Trying his best to get her to move around with him. He knew she was a good swimmer.

Reader slowly pulled away from the lip of the pool and stated to follow the merman around. Growing use to the water and the body itself. She smiled as she swam around with the boy. Hawk was so much fun. He always seemed to try and get her to go out of her comfort zone and try new things. The stuff she was once shy over became normal and fun with his help.

“Hawk this is so much fun! Thank you so much for inviting me to come. I love this.”

“Do you want to see the best part of the cave?”

Reader slowly nodded, trusting the mer.

Before she could say or do anything he was pulling her down into the water.

She could only take a short breath before she was completely submerged into the deep water. She gasped as her head dipped down into the water. For a split second, she was petrified.

The salty water stung her eyes as she opened them just for a moment. Her vision meeting Hawk’s in the clear water.

It truly was breathtaking.

The blue lights in the clear water flashed over him like a blanket. His handsome features are on full display. His blue eyes almost matched the light the algae gave off. It spread over his skin highlighting his whole being. His tail shinned in the light as it flickers and creses her bare legs. Her toes curled at the action of his fins brushing against her.

Moments later, warm lips pressed against her. Kissing her deep as a sudden rush of air passed through her. It filled her lungs like a lifeline. She sucked in the air with a small gasp. Surprised and taken aback but not disappointed. His lips where warm and soft as they made contact with hers. The motion is slow and sweet as their lips moved together. It was like they were synching.

The kiss grew long and deep as he passed more air through the kiss.

Readers hands gripped at his shoulders before she wrapped her arms around his neck. Hawk’s hands gripped at her fatty hips. Palms smooth against her ass cheeks. He played with the fabric of her bikini bottoms. She whimpered at the good touch. He swallowed up her sounds as they started to make out.

They only stopped when Hawk ran out of stored air to pass to her. He was quick to swim them both backup to the surface.

With a shocked gasp she said, “What was that!?” Her eyes wide as she looked back at him.

“That was not little!”

Hawk chuckled at her reaction. He wrapped his tail around her waist and brought her closer to him. Bring her body into his. His tail grasping at her fluffy waist and squeezing. She gasped for a minute as their eyes meet. Their faces are inches apart. Hawk smirked even bigger than before.

“Fine then this time we can surface kiss, but I still like kissing you under the water. It's cute when you get all scared for a split second.” he bit his lip before diving back into her lips. She rolled her eyes before relaxing.

Falling into the new rhythm that was all Hawk.

Meanwhile, Demetri is secondhand embarrassed and excuses himself because he can't watch them up close. That does not stop him from watching from a nearby rock, though, waiting for this to go horribly wrong.

But to both his and Eli's surprise, Reader is chipper and sweet as can be as she talks to Eli. He doesn't say much, mostly just nods along to what she's say. And he's not entirely sure how it happens, but he ends up scoring a date! It's so cute.

Art school portfolio project 6

Merfolk

Merfolk is a comic I started working on in 2021, but didn’t get very far with. This is because I realised I’d rather write a novel and add a few illustrations than make a long comic or graphic novel, because it’s way more work. The stories I want to write are too long for graphic novels, I wouldn’t have enough time in my life to finish them all. I still want to use this story and world for something, probably a novel.

This is everything I made for this project at the time.

These are all the characters, some with multiple designs. I started with characters, because I had the clearest idea of what I wanted them to look like.

I had an idea for multiple types of merfolk. The two types you see here are shallow sea and deep sea merfolk. The deep sea folk are bigger, have less human colours and are bioluminescent.

I drew some environments to get an idea of how the world would look. Environments weren’t my strong point. (Still aren’t, but I’m trying to get better at it.)

These are the covers of the book and the first chapter. I made these a bit later, which is why the style is a bit different.

The story is about a marine biologist who accidentally catches a merman, they become very curious about each other. The family of the merman isn’t a fan of the human.

I made ten pages before I called it quits.

I enjoyed it and I’m proud of what I made, but I realised this medium wasn’t for me and didn’t fit my stories. My skills and style did develop very quickly while working on this, it that also caused me to constantly want to go back and edit previous pages. I found it really difficult to keep my hands off finished pages.

I’d still like to make a graphic novel one day. When I was working on this, I want ready for such a big project, I found it intimidating. I still do. But one day, maybe, I’ll make one.

Omg @gemini-sensei I'm thinking about Poly! Mer!Daniel and Mer!Amanda who falls for a lone fishermen woman.

Reader believes in mermaids and mermen even though all the other fishing boats don't. She believes that are out in the California waters. She doesn't care if they don't believe her, be just has a feeling they are out there.

One day she has to go farther out, pushing the boundaries of the fishing border. The tides are pushing out huge schools of fish. And she definitely needs the money. So she drives out to a more secluded area she has heard talk about. Known for being more quiet and packed with fish.

She's out for hours trying to bag some fish. Throwing multiple nets. She's lucky enough to get just over her normal catch.

She grins as she starts to haul up her last fill net of the day before she heads back to the docks. Hoping to sell off her load by mid-day.

But then suddenly her net feels heavy, way heavier than it should for just some fish. She fusses with the net trying to get it back into her tiny boat. Her back aches as she pulls.

Then as she pulls it up something slaps out of the water inside the net. Hitting her hand and flailing about.

It's a giant purple and amber tail fin!

She instantly drops the net and falls back into the boat. Her but meeting the hardwood of the boat floor. She's so taken aback but she gets up and looks down at where the net fell. She has no idea what going on but she knows something is wrong. She'd quick to pull out her pocket knife and hack away at her net. She sadly sacrifices one of her nets to free whatever creature is stuck in her net. As she cuts she feels terrible, accidentally snagging the poor thing.

Once the net is cut wide open the creature makes a break and goes straight down into the dark waters below. Not even attempting to surface. Reader is stuck standing there for a few minutes. In complete shock about what just unfolded. She didn't get a good look but she knows that she just witnessed SOMETHING unknown.

After a few minutes she finally gets herself back together.

She grabs a few of her fish, ones that are definitely gone by this point. She places them on some near by rocks in a pile. On clear display. She shouts out to no one in particular.

“I'm so sorry for getting you hooked up and stuck in my net! I hope I didn't hurt you by accident, I didn't know you were down there. I'll try not to do it again. But be aware because of the tides going out more people are coming out here to fish. There will be more nets out here with en the week! Please take my offering as an apology gift! I'm sorry once again!”

Once she retrieves her ruined net she heads back in to the docks.

She doesn't even notice Sam who picks at the pike of fish. Ripping into one before taking the rest back home to her parents. Who she later explains what happened.

Daniel and Amanda are upset at first, at the fact their daughter was out in the open water but also the fact she ended up caught in a net. But when Sam explains the woman apologized and even warned her of the threat of more fishing boats, even the fish she shows them that the woman offered as a gift. The couple is questioning at this point. After a long talk between them they decide to venture out the next few days to see if they could get a look at this woman.

The next day they go out and happen upon Reader’s boat. In the exact spot Sam told them about. They watch as she goes about throwing the nets out, pulling them back up, and repeating this process over and over again. Both of them are captivated by her. She's beautiful for a human in their eyes.

She's soft and round unlike most merfolk. So different, so exhilarating. Just from afar they wish to touch her and caress her, to feel her up close. They stay for hours just watching her work.

They take note that before she leaves she places a pile of fish on a rock. Then she is off I'm the boat driving away.

The fish an obvious gift to their daughter.

They rip into the fish, all while hoping that she will return and they may have the opportunity to greet her.

There was a storm and Brendan fell overboard. After several hours trying to look for his boat in the heavy downpour, he finally gave up. He sank under the surface and found the waters were calmer beneath the waves... and he liked it. So he stayed... and waited for the world above to still...

And then... just as he was about to drift away, he saw him. In the darkness, in flashes of lightning, he saw him...
