Ka Baird — Bearings: Soundtracks for the Bardos (RVNG Intl.)

When Ka Baird played in Toronto earlier this year, they warned the audience beforehand that their performance relied heavily on “dead silence”. The physicality and theatricality of the experience was so intense that every eye in the room homed in on Baird and all lips remained firmly sealed. They held the audience in thrall such that the collective emotional escalation was palpable. The warning beforehand was unnecessary, as Baird’s multi-sensory performance commanded silence and awe from everyone else in the room.

It's been five years since Baird released Respires, and while they’ve been incredibly prolific with collaborations and other projects, Bearings: Soundtracks for the Bardos is the proper follow-up album. It originally sprang to life in 2022 as an extremely physical 20-minute performance commissioned by Lampo Chicago. The piece combined Baird’s voice, the air surrounding a microphone hurtling through the air, pre-recorded sounds, and extended flute techniques. It explored liminality and transcendence with its constant movement. Echoes of the work appeared in their Toronto performance.

The illness and subsequent passing of Baird’s mother amplified the sense of evolution and shapeshifting in the original Bearings performance. Grief intertwined with the Buddhist concept of impermanence, influencing the evolution of what is now a fully realized work. To give life to their vision, Baird brought along many collaborators. Half of Horse Lords is present, as are some of the most adventurous musicians from NYC and further afield. A musical community centered around Baird’s conceptual framework gave form to the various emotional and philosophical threads, guiding the album’s completion.

In an interview with Fifteen Questions, Baird describes how their energy intertwines with the sounds they produce. “The sound courses through my body now to the point that I cannot stand still while on stage. It becomes something akin to a purge, some kind of ecstatic experience, a frenzied type of “body music” that is immediate, visceral, available.” With Bearings, Baird captures this physicality of sound using low register buzzing, thudding, and purring. They juxtapose those subsonic pulsatile elements against short, sharp shards that jump across the sound field, evoking the work of the GRM’s musique concrète pioneers. Their voice and the contributions of their friends anchor the work to the human world. Baird unleashes operatic trills as horns bellow, strings swirl, flutes hiccup, and a cat purrs. Each sound represents one aspect of Baird’s hallucinatory narrative.   

In homage to the Bardo Thodol, Baird segmented Bearings into eleven “gates,” each of which contains delights and challenges in equal measure. They encourage the listener to investigate the fleeting nature of reality. What we see this instant may be gone in the next. Baird encapsulates this sentiment with a single, repeated lyric: “Here. Disappear. Poof!”

OK…

I listened to a lot of music this year, and I am not going to prattle on about it all this time because there's too much. These are the albums that came out this year that I really liked. They aren't in a specific order, but they are in a general order (closer to the top just means I listened to it more often, or responded enthusiastically/felt really strongly about it). I have been doing a lot of radio this year, and so I've listened to so much music. It's not trying to be a definitive top 100 list, I am sure I missed some gems, but these are things I personally liked. Then there are some special mentions at the end that include some reissues that include some reworked/additional material, and some compilations/live albums as well. Genres are all over the place, from heavy to light to weird to weirder. Check things out and enjoy the adventure.

A kategóriák átestek némi fejlődésen az évek alatt (Main – Mind / Heavy – Move! / Special Menu / Special / Sense) és ez összefügg azzal, hogy tempón túl (mid-up-down) funkcionális szemantikai mezejük is van, a „Mind” a társas, beszélgetős, zenehallgatós tér, a „Move!” a tánctér, a „Sense” pedig a klasszikus chill-out zone. In her epic video cyclorama The Shape of Things, currently on view at Gladstone, Carrie Mae Weems has envisioned the last eight years of American politics as a circus. That three-ring extravaganza comes full circle literally and figuratively on November 5th when America goes to the polls to decide its very future.  On that day, The Shape of Things will come to life as an agora, a public sphere where people will join to collectively witness what transpires, sharing in an atmosphere shaped by the autonomy of creativity. Organized by Precious Okoyoman and Vincent Katz and Brian Degraw, with Rirkrit Tiravanija + Co. and Spiral Theory Test Kitchen, this all-day event will be a refuge, an oasis, a temporary autonomous zone in the spirit of Hakim Bey. The durational program of readings, live music, and food will materialize through the participation of artists, poets, performers, and composers united by a shared sense of defiance,  hope, and purpose. Open to the public and free, Remember to Dream welcomes all those seeking sanctuary and inspiration on a historic day premised on precarity and defined, one hopes, by an enduring faith in our fragile democracy.
