Can we talk about Cartman's tendency to pet Kyle? And the way Kyle lets him do it?

It's such an under-discussed part of their dynamic. Cartman does this all the time. He does it to tease Kyle. He does it to comfort him. He does it to express gratitude. He even does it to pictures of Kyle when Kyle's not there.

And you could say that's just Cartman, he's just touchy, that's just how he expresses himself . . . except that it's really not. All this petting and stroking isn't something you see him do with Stan and Kenny. (Friends he has said multiple times he loves.) It's not something he does with his actual pet, Mr Kitty. It's not something he does with his mom. It's not even something he does with Heidi or Yentl. There's a lot of hand-holding and kissing in those relationships, but Cartman appears to consider this expected romantic partner behavior, and to be imitating that accordingly. What you don't see with them is the clingy, almost unconscious need to touch he demonstrates with Kyle. Kyle has to be stroked, patted, petted, hugged, poked, pulled on . . . it seems to be a comfort thing for Cartman, and that is just so fascinating to me.

It's also endlessly fascinating to me that Kyle - who has no problem putting Cartman in his place about anything else - allows this nearly every time. Maybe there's some token complaining, but he never actually tries to stop it. It's not "ew, Cartman is hugging me" it's always "why is Cartman hugging me?" and that's a subtle difference I think gets overlooked. People like to claim Kyle's response to Cartman having a crush on him would be disgust, and that Kyman could only ever be one-sided for this reason. But Kyle's response to Cartman being affectionate with him is actually pretty much always confusion, not disgust. I get the impression Kyle doesn't know how he feels about it.

I'm not sure what I'm trying to say here, but it's just so interesting to me, the relationship they both have to touch. Cartman uses Kyle to fulfil his need for touch and connection - and Kyle doesn't often reciprocate this touch, but he pretty consistently makes the concession of allowing it. They're feeling each other out, trying to work out "who are you to me and what do I feel for you?" It's one of the elements of Kyman that makes the ship so endearing, I think. There's this sweetness to it that absolutely should not exist between these characters, but does anyway.

Definitely! You’re right, Cartman does seem to seek out physical contact with Kyle considerably more than with anyone else he isn’t directly romantically involved with and my favourite instances of this is when he does so under the guise of antagonizing him. Two examples of this are the whole ‘Jennifer Lopez’-thing in “Fat Butt and Pancake Head” and Cartman promoting Kyle to the Germans in “Funnybot”. In both cases he uses an instance of disrespecting Kyle as a front to compliment him, with the ‘Jennifer Lopez’-persona constantly being gushing over him, telling him how much she likes him, calling him ‘handsome’ and of course ‘kissing’ him by Cartman pressing his hand against Kyle’s mouth. This is especially interesting considering the fact that later in the episode it is very heavily implied (and then pretty much outright confirmed in “200”) that Cartman really doesn’t have full control over the character. In “Funnybot” Cartman calls Kyle either ‘gentle/soft’ or ‘juicy’ (lol), ‘pretty’, and ‘very beautiful’ in extremely mangled German (which I guess is just regular German in-universe since the native speakers talk just like that) and while the context of the scene is obviously very dark for the viewer, who can infer what’s going on, Kyle doesn’t actually seem to realise what is happening. He doesn’t appear to understand what is being said at all and as such Cartman doesn’t even really have the excuse that he’s teasing him.

This scene fits the reaction you described that Kyle tends to have when Cartman engages him in physical contact very well: Kyle reacts to Cartman excessively touching him with confusion but simply lets it happen. He has every reason to be wary of Cartman’s intentions and yet he makes no effort to stop him from what he’s doing. In “ManBearPig” Kyle wakes up to find Cartman leaning over him and while he doesn’t actually touch him, he does get extremely close to him, giving us the famous image of their faces mere inches apart. Kyle’s reaction to this is incredibly understated: He appears at most slightly irritated and attempts neither to push Cartman off nor to move away from him. Once again, he mostly just seems confused by Cartman’s behaviour but, as far as we can see, makes no further attempts to investigate the reasons behind it. This understated reaction is an indication of an (imo) often overlooked aspect of their relationship, which is that while Kyle is well aware of what Cartman is theoretically capable of, he doesn’t actually seem worried that he’d ever seriously harm him. Personally, if I found myself trapped in a cave with a person who constantly professes his hatred for me and whom I know has no qualms about killing people, and then woke up to find said person looming over me in my sleep I’d be much more worried than Kyle appears to be. In fact, considering everything that has happened over the course of their relationship and how many despicable things Cartman has done, Kyle seems Weirdly Comfortable And Safe With His Evil, Ill-Intentioned Friend. Because that’s what they are: They’re friends. To call it a complicated friendship might be an understatement but when it comes down to it the simple fact of the matter is that these two do like each other. While in earlier seasons a point could be made that they only spend time together out of necessity (with the main four being somewhat isolated from the other kids, as Craig points out in “Pandemic 2”, and Cartman originally being an incidental part of the group as ‘the friend no one likes’), they’ve both long since expanded their social circles to a point where they are no longer ‘forced’ to spend time together for lack of better options. Kyle would be more than justified in cutting Cartman off completely and yet he doesn’t and I can honestly see no real reason for this other than the fact that he simply cares about him as a person.

So I agree that Kyle probably wouldn’t react with disgust to the hypothetical reveal that Cartman harbours romantic feelings towards him. I’m not claiming that he would necessarily be elated but I’m pretty sure ‘disgust’ would not be his first reaction and I think many people who think that it would be might at least partially hold that opinion due to projection: Because while we, as viewers, are frequently meant to find Cartman repulsive both physically and emotionally (his embodiment of the 'fat bastard' trope is a key part of his character, after all), Kyle doesn’t actually appear to overtly feel that way about him – which is to say he does kinda but not exclusively and it’s all just a bit more complicated than that. Kyle being thoroughly confused does seem like the most likely reaction to me. Regarding the physical aspect: Of course Kyle frequently makes derogatory remarks about Cartman’s appearance, specifically regarding his weight (to the point where it’s been a main focus of their dynamic for almost thirty years) but we see several times that his critique actually seems to stem from a place of worry and that he feels bad when he thinks that these comments have actually managed to hurt his feelings (e.g. “Raising the Bar”). Of course, what exactly Kyle’s feelings towards Cartman are is, with good reason, a source of much discussion and I’d claim that Kyle himself isn’t very sure of this. His sentiment towards Cartman definitely seems very erratic, with Kyle going from actively attempting to get him killed in “Fatbeard” to being concerned for his emotional well-being just a season later (“201”, “Poor and Stupid”). This concern Kyle has for a person he supposedly can’t stand has been a pretty consistent part of his character in later seasons and it’s especially striking when compared to the way he disregards his best friend’s feelings when he’s in genuine need of emotional support (“Raisins”, “You’re Getting Old”). This discrepancy is not only an indicator of the complicated relationship Kyle has with Cartman but imho also hints at at least one reason for it. In a (painfully long-winded😅) comment on AO3 I just touched on the similarities between Kyle and Cartman how interesting I find the very different ways in which they deal with their shared character traits. I believe this is something that draws them towards each other, though I’m certain that neither is actually consciously aware of this. You put it so beautifully in your last sentence: "There's this sweetness to it that absolutely should not exist between these characters, but does anyway." There really is an unexpectedly soft underbelly to their relationship that is a lot of fun to explore. While I wont deny the toxic aspects of this ship (in fact, they’re a major part of what I find interesting about it), there is also the surprising potential for a real emotional connection between these characters.

the way he gets all angry at him for literally no reason (more than ever), how he doesn’t really mind hugging him, how it’s mostly him who’s against the “new cartman” cuz it’s not his normal cartman, and so on, so on.

why kyman is NOTHING like heiman (FROM THE VAULT [2020]) PT. 1

There’s A LOT of evidence that Kyman would be nothing like Heiman. First of all Kyle actually knows how to whip Cartman and get Cartman under control which Heidi did not know how to do. Every single time Heidi would bitch at Cartman he would get annoyed and not listen to a thing she says and try to get rid of her or get away from her. But Cartman LOVES it when Kyle bitches at him and he gets a kick out of it, and Cartman actually likes being around Kyle and cares about what Kyle has to say and listens to him. There are a lot of moments that show that Cartman is capable of expressing empathy and concern around Kyle, wheras Cartman gave 0 shits about Heidi and their relationship went absolutely nowhere. I think a huge example of this was when Cartman & Kyle were in the detention center, Kyle yelled at Cartman to go get him some aluminum foil and scissors and Cartman was like “aluminum foil and some scissors ok” because he saw how upset Kyle was with him and he wanted to fix things. Which rlly shows that even if they do fight and shit they would know how to work it out with each other and forgive each other over whatever happens. I think the only reason why Cartman likes to pick on and torment Kyle so much is to get his attention, but usually once Cartman does have Kyle’s full attention and Kyle goes along with whatever Cartman does, Cartman is nice and treats him with respect. And a hugeee example of this was in “Crack Baby Athletic Association” when Kyle joined Cartman for the crack baby thing, Cartman was really nice to Kyle throughout the entire episode and called him smart and stuff and gave him a hug and all that. And Cartman was listening to everything Kyle had to say and the things Kyle wanted to do for the company. The reason Cartman was tormenting Heidi was bc he just didn’t care about her at all and wanted her to go away LMAO. And we already talked about how in “Tonsil Trouble” after Cartman infected Kyle with aids he was all happy and in a good mood to get to go on a trip with Kyle and tried to hold Kyle’s hand. And another small example of Kyle actually being able to whip Cartman just like he did in “Mexican Joker”, was in “Raisins” when Cartman was making fun of Stan for being upset about losing Wendy, Kyle told Cartman to stop and so he did. And I’m sure there are a ton of other examples like this but those are the best I can think of right now, the bottom line is I’m sure if Kyman happened Cartman would listen to Kyle and respect him and be willing to do what he says. I mean I know it would probably be challenging for Kyle to deal with Cartman, bc we all know how Cartman is. He would still probably do whatever the fuck he wanted to do a lot of the time, but I’m sure he would still make an effort to listen to Kyle and take what he has to say into consideration. And do you really think that Cartman would be able to pull the shit he pulled on Heidi on Kyle? LMAOOOO Kyle knows Cartman wayyyy better than Heidi and can see right through his bs and Kyle always knows when Cartman is up to no good. Like remember when Cartman tricked Heidi into eating that ‘beyond kfc’ which made her fat? There’s NO WAY Kyle would fall for something like that, he would stop Cartman right away and call him out on what he’s doing.

I think Cartman has this weird obsession with Kyle and I think it's for 2 different reasons. One, Cartman canNOT live without Kyle. I think I'm over exaggerating but from what I see He rips on Kyle to get that sweet sweet reaction from him for some reason. In 'Smug Alert' and the imagination land trilogy(?) Cartman saved Kyle multiple times for the sake of having someone to rip on + to embarrass Kyle. Two, Even if he said that he hates Kyle, there are times where he genuinely looks like he cares for Kyle(?). Hugging? Wanting to do something involving Kyle? Using Mitch Conner as Jennifer Lopez to kiss Kyle on the mouth? Why would he do all that? I think this is also why one-sided Kyman works. It's funny but just makes sense after watching some of the episodes in the show.

I would say I forgot about this ask, but in reality I didn't have the mental power to answer it since life likes to kick my ass. Sorry it took me like 5 months to answer this mb 😭

Anyhoww, here are my headcanons for main 4 poly 😈

1. Stan and Kyle start off in a relationship, Kyle like Cartman so he joins in. Then Stan’s basically like “Oh, we can do that?” and deems Kenny decent enough to be his crush after some time of feelings.

2. Kyman and Stenny are the main ships of the poly (Mostly because I like them the best) Though Stanman, Kenman, 2K, and Style still happen every so often in the relationship.

3. Cartman is the most physical out of the 4. He’ll hug, kiss, tackle, and do the other stuff (idk what the other stuff could be so use your own headcanons for that). Kyle is the least physical because he just is, Stan and Kenny are kinda midpoint with being physical but Kenny does it more than Stan by a little bit.

4. They still act like their friend group. They could be out in public and no one would have any idea they’re dating, unless they kiss or smth odd like that.

5. Stan’s love language is words. He’ll shower the others with words and more words, and more words and words. Sometimes they won’t even be compliments, like he just talks to them and just says stuff. Like some random ass shit he heard at work or how he beat a videogame he’s spent the past 3 days trying to finish.

6. Kyle doesn’t really have a love language, he just sorta does whatever. If one of the other 3 wants a hug, they get a hug. One of them is feeling down, Kyle cheers them up. Someone sick? Kyle there with soup to make them feel better. Kyle doesn’t really know how to express how he feels to other people, so he just does what they want him to do or what he thinks they want him to do.

7. Cartman’s love language is Physical (As I already said lmao). He gives kisses and hugs, if one of the others refuse he starts bawling his eyes out so they let him hug them. The normal stuff. The only one he doesn’t really give kisses and hugs to is Stan for maybe a not so obvious reason.

8. Kenny’s love language is just sitting next to them or smth. He’s one of those people to not buy one of them a birthday gift and say “Oh, but you have me!”. He genuinely just likes sitting in silence and listening to music while they cuddle up with him, or just do whatever. As long as he can see them, he’s fine with whatever they’re doing.

9. They have a love song they play every time they drive somewhere and each of them, but Kyle, has it on their road trip playlists. So depending on who’s driving, Cartman for example, they have his music taste throughout the drive. But they have a chance to randomly hear the love song and Kyle hates the song so when the other three start singing along he has to deal with that. (If you wanna know the song, it's firework by Katy Perry. There’s no backstory to why it’s their love song, it just is.)

I think I love you" and Kenny is like "yeah I know haven't you been for years I thought you knew" and he's like "um no I didn't" and their relationship literally doesn't change except minimally before Kenny would give him kisses on the cheek and such but Cartman thought it was just guys being dudes but now he'll initiate things like dates and physical touch and especially lovey dovey touching because he's so touch starved he can't stop giving Kenny hugs and holding his hand and playing with his hair they're joined at the hip and everyone thinks they're disgusting but they're perfect for each other and they act like bros all the time like at a party they'll be doing karaoke and jumping in the pool even if it's not a pool party and they have their clothes on but they'll also be sitting in the corner on a couch cuddled up one of them on the other's lap maybe making out or doing soft kisses or just talking or maybe one or both of them fell asleep and it's hard not to be envious of them when they love each other so easily and freely and there's nothing holding them back and they're best freinds and lovers and everything in between

the thing i like to headcanon for kyman is that they can always, no matter what, rely on each other. and they will be there for each other at worst moments ever possible.

when cartman’s mom goes to hospital in a very serious condition, the first and only person he tells about it personally is kyle – because he knows that despite their mutual hate and rivalry kyle will always be there when shit gets really bad. he won’t be just emotional support – he’s the one person to actually start helping and saving his friend in trouble, he’s the one to hug tightly and then slap cartman’s face so he doesn’t get too depressed.

and it’s mutual because kyle knows that even though it’s not the most logical choice, but once he gets in real trouble, cartman will be the first one he goes to. cartman will help to deal with the most fucked up situations and after he literally saves kyle’s ass, he will never shut up with stupid jokes and teasing kyle for getting in such stupid troublesome circumstances. and kyle will take both that and “you owe me now, kahl”, ‘cause he knows cartman will get serious again and help with anything in the future if anything else happens.

⏱️ First Day + Adulthood ⏱️

Couldn’t think of any creative kid scenarios so I decided to mash the two prompts together for this! Today is the first day of Kyle leaving the house for longer than usual for his job while Cartman wants to continue to sleep and cuddle with his baby 💕

It was 6:00 AM. Kyle was putting on his best suit and tie for his office job interview. Granted the interview isn’t until 8:00 AM and the office building is really close by (about an hour or so) but nonetheless, Kyle still wants to be prepared for anything important that might happen before the interview.

As he walked out of the door he heard a noise behind them. It sounded like footsteps. “Kahl?” A sleepy voice was heard. Kyle turned around. “Cartman? What are you doing up early?” He said softly as walked towards his droopy eyed boyfriend. “Why the hell are YOU up so early?” Cartman asked back as he rubbed his eyes.

“Don’t you remember? I have a job interview today. They want me at 8 so I’m preparing myself to leave.” Kyle said as he adjusted his tie.

Cartman’s eyes then shot open and his mouth let out a surprised yet deadpan “What?”

“Yep.” Kyle said as he gave his shocked boyfriend a kiss on the forehead. “In the meantime you can treat yourself to all the food you want and do whatever you want until I come back.” He smiled and started to walk away. “See you in five hour-” Kyle suddenly felt a tight hug.

“No.”

Kyle looked at Cartman in shock. They’ve been separated before, why is Cartman suddenly forbidding him from leaving the house? “Uhh, babe I gotta go.”

“No you don’t. You’re staying with me and you’re going back to bed with me.” Cartman said stubbornly.

“Cartman I’m leaving and you can’t stop me from going.”

That’s when his face started to turn red and he fell to the floor. He still had a good tight grip on Kyle’s arm.

“KAAAHHL! PLEASE DON’T LEAVE ME ALOOONE! I DONT WANT TO BE BY MYSELF! PLEEEASEEEE” The curly haired man cried in a high pitched whiny voice.

“I’ll only be gone for five hours. You’ll survive, babe” Kyle said as he looked down to his sobbing boyfriend with an annoyed expression. He really didn’t have time for his whining. Especially now.

“NOOOO!” Cartman weeped. “I CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT YOUU!”

As Cartman cried, Kyle sighed. Kyle kneeled down and looked at his boyfriend who had tears coming out of his eyes and snot coming out of his nose. He hugged Cartman and wiped away his tears. He even gave the guy gentle kisses on his soft left cheek. As much as Kyle wanted to stay and continue their cuddle session, he had to go out and get this job for the sake of the two of them.

As Kyle continued to comfort Cartman, he thought to himself, What am I going to do with this guy?
