So, another motion graphic assignment. And it’s probably the best shit-post material I’ve ever made surrounding Alex.
I had to make this with character animator, rather than properly animating it. T^T But it was fun xD

Motion Test A: Grow
In this test I tried to recreate the organic movement from the ‘make it better’ video. To do this I used the masking tool to make the stem grow and changed the opacity of the petals and flowers. I wanted to achieve a similar effect with a swirl growing out of the g, but was unsure how to do this.

So far I got the project and the story inside my head, so before I actually do something, I decided to try a start theme first. I use the first image as the background, adjust the contrast and color. the second and third one is drawn by myself. I also do draw some swallows.
I use After Effect to do the rest of the job. After all, I think it’s not bad. The last picture is my style frame for this week. It might be changed during the progress for sure.

Description of Animation (written treatment)
My motion graphics project is a kinetic typography-based, animation that narrates the lyrics to Claudia Brucken’s “Guilty, “from the 2011, 1940’s detective game, L.A. Noire.
The vocals of Claudia Brucken serve to ‘form’ a series of contextual kinetic typography and imagery, that produce the aspect of visual engagement to the project. In which the camera will pan around accordingly as the typography progresses.
Based on the events of the game’s plot, the song likely relates to the adulterous relationship that occurs between the main protagonist, a respected detective, and a femme fatale jazz singer. However, it may also just refer to the insidious seduction of femme fatale characters in the Film Noir genre in general.
As thus, the typography and imagery is composed in a way that leads up to one, big cumulative image in the finale. With the text and pictures forming two large, love hearts that make up the holes for a pair of love heart-shaped handcuffs. This is intended to be symbolic of the insidious effects that the jazz singer character has had on our detective protagonist. That this is one big, forbidden affair that he’s succumbed to, that’s going to have looming consequences in the end.
The visuals are intended to be minimalistic, to make them easily readable, yet still designed in a way that conforms to the 1940’s and 50’s, Film Noir theme of the game. The font used is meant to be appropriate to both the era and the context of the lyrics. The ‘common’ font, that’s selected is blocky and angular in a way that makes it appropriate for composing the shape of love hearts. Variations in the font and visuals are used, depending on the amount of emphasis needed and the context of the lyrics.

Post-mortem
This final project was rather tricky at first to think up a concept for that:
I wanted to and would enjoy animating
Would not be deemed too easy, yet not be too difficult to complete
Looked good
I managed to tick all of these boxes for myself, however I believe I could still do a few things better next time. I would've refined most if not all of my motions and paths just to make sure I had done the best possible masks and animations. I also could have spent more time on my concepts in animation as I was happy with my first 15 seconds however was lost on what to do for the other half. I've definitely learned that a lot more time should be put into all stages of an animation if a content creator wants to separate a good animation and a great animation. Taking the extra time to find better choices of music, text, colours, graphics and themes all would have positively affected my final product. In saying this however, my skills as an animator have grown from almost non-existence to something I can be proud of. And I am proud of what I have created and accomplished overall this semester.

My final version of "Synergy". Some things I changed from my draft version: - Elements are more in time with the music. - Ease in and out polished when the characters stop running. - When the flame character shoots out it's powers, a flare and blur was added in places to make the flames and character look more cohesive together. - Text added at the beginning to further establish that this is a title sequence. - Fade in and out on both the footage and audio Overall I'm extremely pleased with the final result. Stay tuned for my post mortem where I'll be reflecting further
