Shreyas Iyer next in line to become India captain, ahead of Shubman Gill after IPL 2024 Victory: KKR legened
Celebrating Shreyas Iyer’s Remarkable Leadership in IPL 2024
Talks about Shreyas Iyer’s ability to captain the Indian cricket team in the future have been triggered by his outstanding leadership during the IPL 2024 season. Iyer was recently recommended for the position by former Indian batter Robin Uthappa, who highlighted his outstanding leadership abilities in leading Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the IPL 2024 final.
Shreyas Iyer’s IPL Triumph and Captaincy Display
Iyer guided KKR to their third IPL championship in the IPL 2024 season, showcasing his leadership abilities. Throughout the campaign, Iyer maintained his composure and strong cricketing instincts in the face of obstacles and disappointments. It was admirable that he could effectively manage resources and make tactical choices under duress.
The Significance of IPL 2024 Victory
In addition to winning their third IPL championship, KKR’s victory in the IPL 2024 final demonstrated Shreyas Iyer’s rise to prominence as an influential figure in Indian cricket. His leadership abilities and tactical sense were crucial in leading the squad to victory, demonstrating his potential for captaincy in the future.
Shreyas Iyer’s Journey as KKR Captain
Iyer took over as captain of KKR during the 2022 Indian Premier League season, leading the club to a seventh-place finish. Iyer bounced back from the early setback to refine his leadership abilities and lead the IPL 2024 team once more as captain. Throughout the competition, his progress and maturation as a captain were clear to observe.
Impact of Iyer’s Leadership on KKR
Under Iyer’s captaincy, KKR exhibited resilience and determination, overcoming challenges to emerge victorious in crucial matches. His ability to foster a cohesive team environment and instill confidence in his players played a significant role in KKR’s success. Iyer’s leadership style emphasized collaboration and collective effort, inspiring his teammates to perform at their best.
Endorsement from Robin Uthappa
After KKR won the 2024 Indian Premier League, former player Robin Uthappa supported Shreyas Iyer to be the next captain of the Indian cricket team. Iyer is a good fit for the position, according to Uthappa, who also lauded Iyer’s leadership abilities and moral character. Uthappa feels that Iyer has earned the right to be considered for the role of India captain because of his outstanding performance as captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders.
Iyer’s Character and Leadership Attributes
Uthappa emphasized Iyer’s leadership qualities and character, highlighting his capacity to overcome obstacles and make wise choices while playing. In the face of difficulty, Iyer maintained his composure and concentrated on guiding his side to victory. Both teammates and cricket experts respect and admire him for his eagerness to learn and develop as a leader.

[ad_1] Venkatesh Iyer for KKR (PC: X) He played a stellar hand in KKR’s title triumph and was also a part of the leadership group for the franchise in 2024. Having missed out on retention, Venkatesh Iyer is understandably emotional. And yet he sees the rationale behind the retentions and hopes that his former franchise will surely lift the paddle for him at the auction. Excerpts from the conversation: Boria: You had some fantastic seasons with KKR. When you came on the scene in 2021, KKR seemed down and out. And then that fantastic run taking the team to the finals. In 2024, the title win. Clearly, you must be feeling the emotion at missing out on retention. Venkatesh Iyer: I wouldn’t be truthful if I say I am not. KKR was not just a franchise I was playing for. It was like a family, and there are bonds that we have forged. There are some serious relationships there, and I had some fantastic moments with the team. KKR had given me the opportunity, and I tried to make the most of what I got. You do feel a little teary-eyed at not seeing your name in that retention list, but you also understand the choices made. Each one retained deserves to be retained. I do hope that in the forthcoming auction, KKR will see value in putting up the paddle for me. Boria: That was my next question. Would you be hoping that KKR goes for you at the auction? They don’t have a Right to Match (RTM) left, so it would be open bidding. Venkatesh Iyer: I haven’t said this to anyone before. When KKR bid for me the first time, there is no video of it. I haven’t actually seen KKR put up the paddle for me. And then, in the next auction, I was retained. So I have never seen the paddle go up for me at the auction. I have to say I am excitedly waiting for the moment when it happens, and I am surely hoping KKR does raise the paddle for me. It will be vindication of what I have been able to do in the last four years. Boria: Not many remember that after Nitish Rana was injured earlier this year, you were made the vice-captain of KKR. How much did it help you evolve as a player and leader having been given a leadership role? Venkatesh Iyer: Hugely. I still remember Gautam Gambhir telling me that I have been with the franchise for four years, and if I think of something, I must voice my opinion for it will always have value. You feel very good when you are told this. And then, when Nitish unfortunately got injured, I was appointed vice-captain and it was a huge moment in my career. Again, Gautam bhai always said to me that if was standing at slip and Shreyas, our captain, was fielding deep, I should always take responsibility and change the field if I thought so. If I was seeing something and wanted to do an adjustment, I was always encouraged to do it. That’s what felt very empowering. And now, I have to say that whichever dressing room I walk into, be it Madhya Pradesh, KKR or any other team that decides to invest in me, I know I will be a leader in that set-up. Not necessarily the captain, but surely a leader whose words will be taken seriously. For the Latest Sports News: Click Here Venkatesh Iyer Exclusive Sport is emotion. Huge season for you, because you can surely make it back to the national side as an all-rounder. The 2025 IPL can open doors for the World Cup as well. Venkatesh Iyer: Yes, but I am not willing to put pressure on myself by thinking this. I take a lot of inspiration in seeing Varun [Chakaravarthy]. That he made it back to the national team is the result of all the hard work he has put in the last three years. If he can, I can. I know it. But as Shahrukh Sir once told me, we don’t often recognise the value of what we have now by thinking of what we want in the future.
At the moment, I want to well in the Ranji Trophy. Play and win as many games for MP as I can. I am not one for big runs or big wickets. Rather, I am one for impact. I want to have impact for the team and win as many matches as possible. Then, there is the auction and the kid in me is excitedly waiting for it to see which all teams want me and put up the paddle for me. So there is plenty there for me in the now, and I want to focus on all of this. If I do these well, the national team call-up will surely happen. Boria: Final question. In the last four years, you have seen it all – enormous success, failure, retention, IPL trophy win, getting dropped from the national team. An entire range, I have to say. How much have you evolved as a person basis all of this? Venkatesh Iyer: I have to say it has helped me hugely as a person. In 2021, I could do no wrong. Runs, wickets, one-handed catches – all happened to me. I felt it was all very doable. Then came the difficult period. Nothing was easy. I had to work the hardest to make it back again in 2024. Winning the IPL title takes the cake, and it meant I had seen it all. In all of this, you go through a range of emotions and that’s what helps you mature. Now I know I can deal with things. I won’t be flustered and I can handle any adversity. That’s what you learn in the process. [ad_1] Shreyas Iyer with Venky Mysore after winning the last IPL (PC: X) Shreyas Iyer was one of the most-talked-about players in the IPL retention process. So was Andre Russell. And Phil Salt. Why did KKR not retain Iyer? Why did they pay the maximum for Rinku Singh – more than for Sunil Narine and Russell? Were they not in touch with Iyer, as some reports claimed? Did Iyer ask for an exorbitant amount of money as some others have suggested? The man to answer each of these questions was Venky Mysore, CEO of KKR. In his first interview since the process ended, Mysore answered all the tough questions. Excerpts from the conversation: Boria: Why did you not retain Shreyas Iyer? He was your skipper. He led you to the title. So why not retain him? Venky Mysore: Shreyas Iyer was the first name in our retention list. However, the retention process isn’t a one-way street. It is not just about the franchise. It is also about the player wanting to be retained, to continue with the franchise. Of course Shreyas was the first name in our list. He was the skipper. That’s why we got him in 2022. Even when he was injured, we had made it clear that the captaincy was there for him to take back. So you can very well understand. However, there are often things that you don’t control. If a player wants to test his market value, and the auction is the best marketplace to do that, it is always fair to let him to do so. That’s what we at KKR have always believed in, and have backed our players. At a personal level, I share a very good rapport with Shreyas, but it is also true he should have the freedom to decide. Boria: So, clearly you are telling me it was his call. Do you feel let down or disappointed by this? After what KKR has done, even waiting for him to recover and captain the team, do you feel hard done by? Venky Mysore: These are harsh words. I don’t think we should look at it that way. Rather, we should all accept that things did not work out. Despite the best of intentions at times, things happen and that’s how it is. This is how things operate at times, and you need to accept that and move on. Boria: Tell me the Andre Russell story. Even we, and I will put my hand up here, had heard from strong sources that you were considering releasing Russell. Clearly, that wasn’t the case. Was there any doubt on Russell? Venky Mysore: Sunil Narine has been playing for us for more than a decade. Andre is playing for us for close to a decade. They play for all our other franchises as well, and have won many titles with us. They have both won many MVPs in the IPL. So the truth is it was a no-brainer that both will be retained. It is also about the brand – they are identified with the purple and gold. The fans love them both. And their contributions speak for themselves. So there was never any debate over retaining them. And that’s why we did not react. Even when Andre had the issue with WADA, we had a contract ready for him. He says that very fondly. You will see some of these players play for the purple and gold for as long as they play. That’s how it is. For the Latest Sports News: Click Here Here is @VenkyMysore @KKRiders on Shreyas Iyer. “He was number 1 in our retention list”. What happened then? That’s how a brand is built. Venky Mysore: (Jumps in). In fact, I will even tell you we did not want a mega auction. Why should we? Why should it be that we have to leave more than two-thirds of our squad? Literally, three-fourths. I am part of this system and yet it takes me three to four games every season to figure out who is playing for who. Think about the fans. How will loyalty be built? We had suggested to the BCCI that there should be a mini-auction and not a mega auction, for that’s how you build brands and create loyalty.
When fans scream ‘Andre! Andre!’ or ‘Rinku, Rinku!’, you know they are doing so because they identify with these players. It is essential we have these players with us. With the mega auction, you are forced to leave three-fourths of your squad and that’s why we were opposed to it. Boria: You mentioned Rinku Singh. How come you are paying him the maximum money? More than Sunil or Andre? Venky Mysore: There is nothing really to read into it. Rather, think of his story. He came to us for 55 lakhs. Then went up to 65 lakhs. Now, he is one of the most-loved cricketers and all of 70,000 fans chant his name. He is a national team player and deserves every bit of it. These are stories we are proud of, and it was essential we recognise his growth and celebrate that. Boria: Who are the players you had the most difficulty releasing? Phil Salt is one name that comes to mind. Mitch Starc. Venky Mysore: We wanted to retain at least eight to nine players. You also need to mention Vaibhav Arora. Think how he got us important wickets in the play-off stages – semi- final, final. His contributions can never be forgotten. That’s what I am saying, you can’t just leave these players who have been with you. But then, rules are rules and you need to function within them. It isn’t ideal, but it is as it is. Boria: Finally, you have lost half your coaching staff – Gautam [Gambhir], Abhishek [Nayar] and Ryan [ten Doeschate] – to the Indian team. Venky Mysore: And not the first time. Some say this is a feather in our cap, and I tell them we don’t need such feathers anymore. But then, we have always encouraged them to grow and will never stand in the way of growth in their careers. We still have a very strong group in Chandru Pandit, Bharath Arun and Carl Crowe, and have also identified a fielding coach. We will make up for sure. There is nothing to worry.
