Also, I get the Taryn hate but can we be real about Vivi for a sec?
Like she is the oldest sister, she is Fae, she is Madoc's blood. She could've protected Jude, she SHOULD'VE protected Jude. Instead she was in her own fantasy about running away to human land. She made 0 efforts to understand her younger sisters and to see why they like Elfhame. Literally 0. She just came off as a bratty kid for most of the book and Jude had to think for her family. A lot of the times she was so lonely and in grave danger and vivi was just not there?
It just sucks. I honestly think Oriana was more protective than vivi at times.

AU: Children Henry II and Catherine de Medici.
Франциск II(1544 - 1595).

The main role of clockworks had obviously been for them to fight in the wars for Valencia, but their secondary purpose was to entertain Valencians and act as their servants. They were seen as objects and treated as nothing more.
So when Gazpaccio built Kane and regarded him as family, as his own son, it was seen as strange and impractical. He was using Kane to assist him with toy-making and gain vengeance on others - there really was no need to see and treat him as something more, but Gazpaccio still welcomed and cared for him as his own flesh-and-blood regardless.
One of the influences he (unintentionally) left on Kane was this concept of relationships - as Kane viewed his own creations as his family, just like his father did with him.
#headcanons#gazpaccio#i dont share many hcs anymore so ill post these every now and then#thinking of the few instances where gazpaccio clearly had an influence on kane beyond the corruption of his vengeance#i imagine gazpaccio received lot of judgement and skepticism from others when he openly treated and regarded kane as his 'son'#kane saw this dynamic and repeated it with his own creations. he COULD'VE created the elite and regarded them as only his councils#but he doesn't. they have what surely has to be a unique situation with clockworks compared to their history in valencia#and i just think it's possible he'd gotten that from gazpaccio. how he was the first to truly treat a clockwork as something more#also i don't regard queen as kane's daughter. if i haven't made that obvious. i see her as his partner he created to share his ideals#in the image of the king and queen chess pieces#what is a king without his queen? the most powerful piece on the chessboard?#it's interesting how kane regards his relationships with clockworks. the elite all do. it's a more humane trait to them#that can only be traced back to gazpaccio#at least that's how i see it

King Kalākaua-- dubbed throughout time as the "Merry Monarch"-- dedicated his life&complicated rule to establishing the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi as an independent power recognized world wide, as well as revitalizing a culture that had been nearly ground to dust under the heel of colonization. Hula-- once publicly outlawed as a deeply spiritual&religious act by the missionaries who spearheaded the war to destroy our culture-- was brought back to the public consciousness by the King, an incredibly accomplished dancer himself.
The Merry Monarch Hula Festival is the most well-known portion of his legacy, and is celebrated by kānaka&lovers of hula all over the world.
Mahalo nui loa, Ke Aliʻi Kalākaua.
#king kalakaua was an incredibly complicated ruler. he only became king on a technicality.#i feel a deeply misunderstood thing about how our monarchy worked is that-- after the kapu system was abolished-- kings&queens were elected.#only those from the royal line of kamehameha ran but kanaka loved their elected rulers deeply.#king kalakaua was the only real exception to that rule.#he wasnt despised. but he was seen as someone who wanted to cater to the international court of politics rather than#be there for the ppl on a more localized level. plantations&the conditions they ran in flourished--#but kalakaua traveled all over the world to get meaningless acknowledgements that were proven to be totally worthless#the second a gun was put to his head&he was made to sign the bayonet constitution&strip our ppl of our rights almost entirely.#anyway i chose kane kahiko bc this is the most traditional form of hula-- traditionally only men danced bc of the religious aspects to it#the merry monarch is going on right fucking noooooowwwwww.#i wanna goooooooooooooooooo.#♡#yas#e ola#Youtube

All'inzio (Chapter 28) ENDING
Summary: A soldier-in-training, Valerie hopes to join the Valencian Army to avenge her father’s death under the wing of General Rooke. But when she happens to catch the attention of Commander Kane, her plans take a different turn.
Human AU of the Armada from Pirate101, where Kane meets his Queen.
Pairing: Kane/Queen
–
Note: The title translates to “at the beginning”.
–
Kane had a gift for Queen.
He started constructing it the day after he proposed. He worked diligently the next week, wanting to finish it in a timely manner. When it was done, he gathered the Elite over to the house. He insisted this was just as important as the first time, when they met Valerie. He was greeted with skepticism until he revealed what he exactly made for her.
Deacon eyed the present, clearly intrigued. "...Really?"
Kane nodded. “It's about time she had one. I think we can agree on this.”
Rooke drew back and passed him a look. “This is kind of serious. It involves all of us. Are you sure she’s-”
“-Have you not heard?” Phule interrupted him. “They’re engaged.”
“Seriously?”
Deacon motioned with his hand. His brother got the message and leaned down to his level. He whispered something behind his mask. He informed him of the ‘fight’ between Kane and Queen and what else he neglected to see. He’d been the only Elite who missed the entire ordeal, as he was delivering to their army bases at the time. This was when the General stood up straight. He stared at the floor for a long time before he muttered:
“I miss everything.”
“So we're in agreement, then?” The Commander looked at them all. They nodded in return. “Bene. She should be here any second.”
He re-wrapped the gift while the Court glanced at each other in the background. Deacon passed a smug look to the jester, even though he couldn't see it. He clenched his hands around his cane as he whistled, earning a scowl from Phule.
“I'm so proud you’re finally acting like an adult.” He teased. “Putting an end to this childish nonsense you started.”
“Oh. Did you want an apology?” He spat dryly. “I only said sorry to one person today.”
He placed a gloved hand over his chest endearingly. “So, so proud.”
The doors to the mansion opened. They found Queen standing in the doorway, looking at them curiously. She was surprised to find the entire Elite in one room. Her eyes soon landed on Kane. He stepped forward and presented the gift he’d been concealing behind his back. It was small and fit in the palm of his hand. It was wrapped beautifully, with a decorative bow on top.
“For you. From all of us.” He told her.
She looked to the other men in the room, who motioned for her to take it. She excitedly took it from his hands and unwrapped it. When the paper was off, a lone box sat in her hands. She removed the top and her eyes lit up at what she saw.
It was the same communication device she’d seen on the Elite’s wrists. She picked it up and admired how light it was. She pressed the same button she’d seen Kane touch many times. The screen lit up instantly. Before her were the names of the Court - Kane, Bishop, Rooke, Deacon, and Phule. She looked up with wonder in her eyes. Her fiancé appeared pleased.
“As of today, you have your own device to contact us. We’re on speed dial, more or less - so if you ever need to speak with me, so to say, simply press my name and you will call me.”
“It’s lighter than a telephone.” She tied it on her left wrist. He came forward and pressed another button on the device, displaying a separate screen with text.
“Yours is programmed to deliver news in Valencia. So you can keep up with events and rumors for her majesty. I imagine it’ll be useful to us as well.”
She read the screen. It was an article straight from the local newspaper. She turned it off with a grin and rolled up her sleeve. It was a snug fit, which gave little weight on her wrist. She could see why they weren’t bothered carrying these all the time - it was extremely convenient. She came forward and hugged Kane, leaving a kiss on his lips in gratitude.
“Thank you.” She turned to the rest of them. “-All of you. It feels like…you're welcoming me into your family, as strange as that is.” She laughed lightly.
“Practically.” Bishop pressed his fingers together. “Our communication is crucial. We discuss a lot of confidential information. You are trusted to use this wisely.”
“-And ignore Phule’s annoying prank calls.” Deacon shot an aggravated look at him. He smiled in return.
“It is also fine just to speak with us.” Kane looked at his tinkerer. “If there’s ever an emergency, my soldiers will attend to you if I can’t directly.”
“The range of these things are incredible.” Rooke commented, tapping his own. “Not the best to use overseas, but – it’ll work.”
She looked at their masked faces impressively. It felt like she shared a new connection between them. And she was happy to. This was just as great a gift to her as the engagement ring on her finger was.
—-
The next several weeks were spent… without leisure. Queen was thrown into their situation relatively quickly, since she was finally prepared for it, in Kane’s eyes. They told her everything about their circumstances - which involved conflict between Valencia and neighboring countries, tensions that had been building over the past year. They hoped her input would help. Even Bishop seemed anxious, asking if there was anything she thought they could do.
Her lessons informed her about this sort of thing. Her time training as a soldier taught her reliance. Everything she learned in Valencia made her familiar with what they were working with. She’d heard interesting things from the royalty as well - which made Queen equipped to offer them new solutions and ideas. Ones they hadn’t even thought of. So they went along with it, hoping for the best outcome.
At first, she was uncertain as she lent them her suggestions. But if she was taught anything, it was to be confident. She thought back of her strategies in chess - the fateful one that beat Kane in their last game together. He was relying on his Queen through the entire process, giving her all the trust he had. In return, she promised him they would pull through.
. . .
. . .
. . .
The rest of the year was tough as they fell into the war. Queen watched soldiers and dragoons pour out of bases and into warships, securing the bastion around Cadiz. The battles were fought far from her homeland, where the Elite communicated solely through their devices, keeping each other updated on progress. Things fluctuated between bleak and hopeful. Valencia itself was thrown into uncertainty, as the King and Queen grew anxious the longer things went on.
Queen did her duty and assured the nobles, distracting them just as Kane taught her to. With her help, they kept Valencia under guided reassurance - offering beautiful golden devices to keep them at bay. They remained blind to the struggle and hardships facing the Armada. With Queen’s assistance, they overcame many difficulties and led in victory. It was incredible, in the Elite’s eyes, when the war finally came to an end.
It took a couple of years. Every day felt like a battle of itself - but Queen brought in new perspectives. They were accustomed to planning and strategizing a certain way, that the enlightenment helped them more than they thought it would. Valencia won. Treaties were made. It was at this moment Bishop finally confessed her help was needed after all. He thanked her for her contributions shortly after their victory.
Kane, on the contrary, was elated.
“Darling, you were marvelous!” He picked her up by the waist. “If only I could thank you more.”
She let down her mask and sighed. “It was stressful.”
“But we won.” His hands squeezed her sides. “You’ll be a successful queen by my side." He pressed his forehead against hers. “-I love you.”
She’d never seen him this happy before. But she couldn’t blame him. This was great news for Valencia. It brought a promising future ahead. The rest of the Elite poured into the room and expressed their gratitude to her. It felt like she was receiving too much credit from them - but they stressed how well she had done.
She realized that this is what the rest of her life will be like. As a second-in-command, dealing with stressful experiences of war. She couldn’t imagine going through as much as the Court has. They dealt with this every day. It was their job. And now, it was hers as well. Will she grow immune to the bloodshed like Rooke? Decide someone’s life or death by the wave of the hand like Kane? Plan every move like it was a chess game?
She smiled as she imagined these things. She wouldn't have it any other way.
—-
The first thing King Casimir wanted was to celebrate their victory. Invitations to the castle were sent out while the rest of Valencia hosted their own celebrations elsewhere. His majesty’s palace was the place to be - as there was a grand party hosted for their celebration. Food and drinks were freely passed around while many reveled dancing around the ballroom. For Kane and Queen, it was the first entertainment they’ve attended in awhile. They declined invitations while they focused their efforts on the war. It was almost ethereal to step through the castle that night and find nearly every room filled with party-goers.
They were dressed appropriately - men in tuxedos while women wore brilliant dresses. It was clear they were indulging, as plenty were inebriated early in the night. That was frowned upon, but this night was a special exception. They finally won the war. It was the perfect excuse to unwind. A well-dressed man hiccuped as he passed Queen. She could smell the alcohol in his breath.
She found this an amusing comparison. The surviving soldiers and generals who won this war were reconciling with their families and loved ones at this moment, while the rich rewarded themselves extravagantly for doing nothing. She remembered Phule made a comment about this before they even left for the castle.
“They do this sometimes.” He informed his fiancée as he guided them through the crowds. “The more worried they get, the more relieved they are when we win. The bigger the party, in a sense.”
“I see…”
It wasn't long before they reached King Casimir and Queen Margherita in their throne room. Formalities were still upheld in this part of the castle. The room wasn’t overbearingly crowded, but there were more people around than usual. This didn’t distract the royalty, who recognized Kane and Queen coming in from a mile away. Their eyes went wide and their posture upright, excited smiles taking over their faces.
“Supreme Commander!” The King yelled loudly, standing from the throne. “Come here this instant!”
Queen heard Kane mutter something under his breath. Every eye in the room was now on them. He went to the thrones at a brisk pace and bowed underneath the King’s gaze while his partner politely curtsied to them. The pale man came forward and slapped a hand on his back, gesturing Queen to come forward.
“My people – this party, and our victory itself, would not be possible if it weren’t for the Commander! We want to express how thankful we are having such a strong military…! I hope you can accept our thanks!”
Cheers sounded around them. She observed everyone intently. She felt strange. Cynical? How could they be celebrating the troops if they weren’t invited to the castle to begin with? Kane bowed his head at their attention and brushed this matter off as subtly as possible.
“Thank you, your highness. We will continue to serve you as successfully as we have. For the glory of Valencia.”
‘For the glory of the Armada’, Queen mouthed, remembering the saying the soldiers often yelled in triumph.
“Wonderful! Let's celebrate!”
Another round of cheers and whistles. They found the Commander’s presence the perfect opportunity to start drinking, passing around glasses of wine and popping champagne bottles open. Kane and Queen accepted a drink or two - remaining by the royalty’s side as they chatted the night away. They were eventually offered seats of their own and took them. They knew how long this party would take.
Inevitably, news of their engagement was mentioned. Casimir and Margherita looked delighted to hear about it. He turned to Kane excitedly, tapping the glass with his ring a few times. He struggled to contain himself.
“You MUST have your wedding in our castle..! I insist!”
“Of course.” Margherita nodded along. Queen could hear a trace of jealousy in her tone. “I am in full agreement. We have a room or two dedicated to the ceremony.”
She was speaking through her teeth. Why was she envious? Could it be that *she* will be the center of attention, as a bride for a day? Stealing her spotlight? Judging by the way she shifted in her throne, this must’ve been the reason.
Kane’s voice broke her thoughts. “We haven’t planned anything yet. We were busy with…well, you know.” He looked to his beloved. “Would that be alright with you?”
She didn't miss a beat. “Yes.”
“It’s settled, then..! I’ll have a planner working for you right away.”
Casimir motioned someone over and whispered into their ear. They scribbled something on a paper in return. Kane glanced in Valerie’s direction and noticed her smile. She was looking at the Queen. It was a new expression from her - something of wrongful intent. He couldn’t help wearing one of his own. When her eyes met with his, they shared a similar intent behind their gazes.
Oh, she understood. Almost too well.
—-
Their wedding took place in the grand halls of Valencia’s castle. The catering and decorations were expensive. Music was provided by a live orchestra. The castle inhabitants were invited to attend, including the royalty, the Elite, and Queen’s family and friends. Some military officials from allied countries came, to show support for the Supreme Commander. It was a grand event of itself that earned a lot of attention.
Margherita assisted Valerie with picking out her dress, which included advice from her court of women. They settled on something golden and white - naturally - that started at her chest and ended at her heels. It had elegant details with a large bow or two on the back, the material turning silky at her knees. It hugged her thin frame and exposed her bare cleavage - she was practically eye candy to those around her.
Queen noted the forced smile on the royal woman’s face. It came as her final decision then and there. As for Kane - he settled on something closer to his usual wear, which was a fancy dark gray suit and vest, the usual red ascot around his neck incorporated into the outfit. He wore a black pair of dress pants and shoes – something that caught the attention of the women in the same room.
They looked irresistible. It drove some mad - others admired it. Their reactions were expected when they saw each other at the altar, eyes lit up as they drank in the sight of one another. The bride and groom wore their masks for a good portion of the union, with an exception when they stood in front of the other. They removed them from their faces as they gazed at each other. A gesture shared only between them. Unmasked. Unadulterated.
“I do.”
Soon they were enjoying the reception, leading the dance in the ballroom. They were the center of attention - the beauty others admired from afar. King Casimir was euphoric through the entire experience, while Margherita kept quiet and reserved. Queen flashed her a smile when they waltzed past them, turning her head to admire her ring as she clutched Kane’s hand. It was just as gorgeous as the last. She rested her head on his shoulder while they moved along. This was the best day of her life. Words couldn’t describe how happy she was, in that moment.
He barely heard her muttering a question under her breath:
“...Do you ever plan on overthrowing them..?”
It was such a bold sentence that he didn’t believe she whispered it to begin with.
He looked at her before glancing at the King and Queen, who were dancing from afar. Oblivious, just as they wanted. As they kept them. He shook his head with a tsk.
“We mustn’t talk of that on our wedding day.”
“I didn’t hear a ‘no’...”
“You'll see what I have planned.”
She didn’t complain. Things seemed to get better the longer they went on. They sliced the cake and served them to the party. She was eventually approached by Kane’s sons, who sat around their table and offered their congratulations on the wedding. They were appropriately dressed for the occasion - all of them in suits and formal wear. It was quite a change from their usual uniforms.
The most noticeable part were the masks not on their faces.
She’d seen Phule like this once before when they were on the Tortellini's island. He had brown curls and there was a small scar under his left eye. Deacon, meanwhile, had dark hair that came to his shoulders. He had a stubble beard with tired eyes, teeth slightly yellowed from his habit of smoking. Rooke looked identical - minus the large scar on the side of his face, as well as healed cuts around his cheeks and jaw. He had a 5 o'clock shadow that she imagined grew to a hefty beard. Bishop remained without any facial hair and had the lightest-colored brown of them all, wearing a pair of glasses that differed him the most from his brethren.
She stared at them, trying to memorize what they looked like. It was the first time she’d seen them unmasked. They noticed her reaction.
“It is a special occasion, so we figured we did not need them.” At her silence, Bishop pointed to his face. “-The masks.”
“Yes, I can see that…” She sighed. “You’re all so handsome.”
She came forward and hugged them tightly. She couldn’t help the tears that left her eyes. This was her new family. She couldn’t think of a single word to say as she embraced them. They eventually withdrew and moved to their seats, taking this time to properly eat. She sat back and hummed to herself pleasantly, ignoring her slice of cake. Kane opened his mouth to say something until she turned her head and found her mother sitting a few tables across from them. She left a kiss on her husband’s cheek and excused herself.
Emilia was constantly looking around in wonder, enjoying the taste of her dessert. Once she saw her daughter approaching, she wasted no time leaping out of her chair and holding her tightly. Valerie drew back with the brightest smile on her face. She got a better look of her daughter and admired how beautiful she was. She noticed the pearl necklace was missing from its usual spot, but didn't question it. She dreamed of being at her wedding - and for it to be somewhere so fancy like this…
“Congratulations, honey.” She brushed her hair behind her ear. "This is so wonderful.”
“-Have you met the King and Queen?” She asked expectantly. Emilia shook her head.
“Everything is intimidating..! I've never been to the castle until now. There’s so much to take in. And they’re probably very busy–”
She was cut off by Valerie firmly taking her hand and leading her to the table where the royalty were sitting. It felt like what happened on family day back when she was a cadet - dragging her mother over to meet with the Commander, whom she was afraid to speak with at the time…Queen soon stopped and politely introduced Emilia, encouraging her to take a seat and get to know the crown. Casimir and Margherita looked interested with her company. It wasn’t long before they were starting a conversation, getting along well.
She sat next to Kane with a proud smile. He followed her line of sight and noticed what she did. Everyone was distracted as they worked on their portions and socialized with fellow guests. He took this opportunity to his advantage and stood to his feet. He offered his hand, which was taken with a confused expression on her face.
“There is only one more thing you have to do.” He informed, beckoning the Elite. They followed them out as they momentarily left the room. “After that, everything is official.”
“Am I not your wife yet?” She arched an eyebrow teasingly.
“As my second-in-command.” He elaborated.
Before she could ask anymore questions, they approached a large balcony overseeing a good portion of the bastion below. When she peered downwards, she found rows of awaiting armada soldiers, dragoons, and musketeers. Their masked faces were tilted upwards, looking expectantly at them as they stood at attention. They were awaiting further command, instruction, or…something. The Elite stepped to the side as Kane brought Queen to the railing, unsheathing his rapier and handing it to her.
“Present this, and they will address you as their commanding officer.”
She took the handle uncertainly from his hands. Then she gazed back at the crowd of soldiers. It was completely silent as they waited. They perked up when she took a step forward and got a better look at them. It was a new sight entirely - to see so many below, awaiting her command. Eyes watching her every move. It made her feel… powerful. Like she was their Queen.
She extended her arm to display the sword in her hand. In an instant, and in a fluid motion, the soldiers saluted her and placed a firm stomp on the ground. It collected into one loud noise that was soon followed with an exclamation:
“For the glory of the Armada!”
She grinned.
The Armada’s Queen.
