Anonymous asked: As an Anglo-Scots did you take sides watching Six Nations rugby between Scotland and England?

I did take sides, I sat on the Norwegian side (on my mother’s side). In other words I was trying to be neutral. Like the rest of my family, especially my Anglo-Scots father, divided loyalties put a great strain whenever Scotland plays the auld enemy in virtually any sport, but especially rugby.

I watched the rugby with my French partner (who is naturally rooting for the French....which would make him insufferable if ever France did win the Six Nations rugby) and also some rugby-mad friends with a plentiful supply of beer and snacks.

This was a Six Nations smash and grab match, settled as Scotland found their heads just as England were losing theirs. For a game expected to be a kickfest in wind and rain, the 2022 Calcutta Cup produced an absolute thriller in a game where both sides committed to fast handling, precision kicking and breathless intensity.

Although Scotland were pre-match favourites, this was a massive game for the home team, one Scotland needed to win to prove to themselves their level of improvement. The Scots got over the line, took their chances and fully deserved to win the Calcutta Cup.

The match between rugby’s oldest rivals was billed as a clash between Smith and Finn Russell, two of the game’s most exciting No 10s, and in a way it was, just not when both fly-halves shared the stage. Smith looked to have steered England into calmer waters with an assured and commanding performance, his breakthrough try the moment where England finally landed a blow after what seemed to be relentless pressure.

What changed in England after Smith’s withdrawal was exacerbated by Luke Cowan-Dickie’s yellow card and resulting penalty try, the game-changing moment to put Scotland within touching distance of a second consecutive victory in this fixture. Russell held his nerve to kick the winning points as a final England foray saw the visitors come away empty handed yet again.

England’s starting XV was one of the least experienced line-ups seen in recent times. England will be disappointed by the result but, considering the amount they learned, complete with the displays of their recalled players and their huge injury list prematch, they captured a great deal of positive learning from their loss.

In these games I always root for the underdog or the side that has the best chance of stopping France from winning the whole thing. So in a game this even I was on the edge of my seat most of the game. But in the end I think Scotland deserved it as the scoreboard doesn’t lie.
