Dead End Drive-In

Ever see a movie so bad you thought you had gone to Hell and would never stop watching it? That’s sort of what happens to the characters in Brian Trenchard-Smith’s DEAD END DRIVE-IN (1986, Criterion Channel, Plex). One of the better dystopian science fiction films made in the wake of MAD MAX 2 (1981), the film is set in a 1995 in which a series of catastrophes — riots, natural disasters, economic crashes — have tuned most countries into police states.

In Sydney, delinquent Karboys roam the streets looking for cars to strip for parts and people to terrorize. To get some peace with his girlfriend (Natalie McCurry), good guy Crabs (Ned Manning) takes her to a drive-in, not realizing it’s been turned into a detention camp. While the couple makes out, the police steal two of his wheels, stranding them in what turns out to be a shanty town of disaffected youths kept happy with a steady diet of junk food, drugs and bad movies. There’s no escape, though if he finds a way to keep the corrupt manager (Peter Whitford) happy, there’s the chance of advancement within the corporate structure.

The opening that establishes the film’s dystopian world drags a bit. There are lots of incidents with not much beyond world-building tying them together. But once the action moves to the drive-in, the pace picks up. Trenchard-Smith knows how to build a scene, he makes great use of the wide screen format, and he gives good montage (with New Age music from performers like Lisa Edwards, Short Circuit and Kids in the Kitchen). He also injects a lot of social commentary. Most of the placated kids are happy to give up their freedom for what little the drive-in gives them. When the police move in a large number of Asians, largely depicted as families, the whites start complaining about their world’s being polluted. Although most of the original prisoners are violent thugs, they’re suddenly afraid their women will be attacked. Trenchard-Smith could go further with this. We don’t see much interaction between the two populations, and the only violence among the white inhabitants is an unmotivated attack on Manning. In addition, most of the people already in the drive-in seem to have been sent there for over-acting. But Manning gives a solid, intelligent performance that suits the only person who seems to keep his head about him and longs to get out. Whitford is also quite good, wisely underplaying a role that could have degenerated into over-expressive villainy. And there’s enough going on to keep you going until the final 20-minute action sequence, containing a record-setting stunt that’s as exhilarating as you could hope for.
