This is Your Kingdom of Heaven, Father, Just as You planned it. Every immortal cliché intact. Lambs frisk. Wheat ripples. Sunbeams dance. Something is wrong. The light: flat. The air: sterile. Do You know what is wrong? There is nothing to dream. Nowhere to go. Nothing to know.

My grandma was born in Israel in the late 1930s. Her grandfather and uncle survived "there" and immigrated to Israel after the holocaust.
I didn't hear about their stories as a kid.
The closest link I have is my grandma, telling me that her mom refused to believe her sister, who escaped Europe in a refugees ship (Ma'apilim) is dead. The ship was drowned, and the sister was on it with her husband and two young children. But my great-grandma (whom I never met) kept holding to the fact that her sister was a great swimmer, who won several competitions. To her lest day, gr-gram believed her sister is missing, not dead.
But still.
I grew up learning about the holocaust, as a part of life. I had a fight with my mom when I was 7 when she found me reading an autobiography of a survivor.
In Israel, the argument is not "if" but "what age should kid start learn about the holocaust"
(as in "1st grade or pre-k?")
There are 2 dates for holocaust remembrance: the Israeli, in which we learn in school about it and there's a siren at the morning and everyone stops and stand in silence. Remembering for 60 seconds.
Kadish is a prayer you say for the dead, during the time after they passed, and every year on their passing date.
So, there's also Tevet 10th, the Jewish "General Kadish day", in which we pray for the souls of those we don't know when they died. Or don't know about them, in general.
(there are so many communities we don't even know EXISTED, not to mention the individuals who died, or when they died.)
i am so fucking infuriated that the same leftists who have been posting the protocols, and reblogging news literally direct from hamas, are now acting all righteous because they get to call out j.k rowling for her latest bout of transphobic antisemitism. they feel so good that they're "standing up for victims of the holocaust", while they've spent the past six months weaponizing the holocaust to attack jews.
if you're only calling it out when the poster is a terf or right-wing bigot posting misinformation on twitter, but not when jews are being stabbed in the streets, then congratulations, your activism is worthless! you can stop trying to convince yourself you would have been against the holocaust when you've been dead fucking silent about the jews who are dying now.

Book Review: "The Weight of Ink," a novel by Rachel Kadish
This heartrending, impossibly hopeful book by award winning author Rachel Kadish commanded my attention from the moment I opened it. It follows two parallel stories that are intimately interwoven: the unraveling of a cache of hidden papers discovered underneath a stair by two historians at odds with one another, and the life of the young Sephardic Jewish woman who wrote those papers in seventeenth century London. The book is richly layered, but never gets away from itself. Every word is deliberate, and absolutely necessary. Its visual descriptions are stunningly realized, and its central figures are both deeply admirable and at times uncomfortably human. It leaves the reader with no easy answers or clean breaks, but no loose ends either. Read this masterful piece of contemporary Jewish fiction if you are Jewish, if you are not Jewish, if you have a deep love of women, if you have a deep tenderness for men, if you are Queer, if you struggle within the confines of gender, if you are asexual, if you believe that our choices and desires can shake the very foundations of our lives, if you love history, or if you enjoy lush descriptions of seventeenth century architecture.

Kadish Morris: You have said that this is the book (Time is a Mother) of which you are proudest in terms of craft. Why? Ocean Vuong: It’s important for me to say that being proud is not so much a claim on quality or achievement in the work, or lack thereof, but of satisfying the artistic potential within oneself. With my other books, I’ve always felt that there was room left over in the glass, that I didn’t fill it to the brim when it was published, mostly because I didn’t have the courage to execute all my techniques, or that they weren’t truly refined (the use of humour, for example). With this book, I felt the water was finally spilling over the top, which is both a relief but also perhaps a reason to mourn. Is this it? Have I stopped growing? Have I caught up with myself? I don’t know – but if that’s the case, then I would be perfectly happy with that. I may be alone in thinking this, but I truly don’t believe that a writer should just keep writing as long as they’re alive. I see my career not by how much I can produce but by how the work can get me to where I can meaningfully stop and be satisfied with what I’ve done. I’m more interested in stopping well rather than endlessly creating. - Ocean Vuong (from this June 2023 Guardian interview)

Philip Guston
Until 25th February 2024, 50 years of work by Canadian artist Philip Guston (1913-80) is on display at Tate Modern. Concerned with philosophical and social concerns, Guston’s abstract expressionist work responds to wars, racism and violence. He felt it was his responsibility to challenge “the brutality of the world” through his art and consistently changed and reinvented himself in doing…

It's been a month since the start of this war.
A month since October seven. A month since 1,400 innocent people were murdered in their homes. A month since 240 people were kidnapped to gaza, some of which mere children.
In jewish tradition, we mourn our dead for seven days after they died - Shiva - and for another memorial day 30 days later, a month.
This is the memorial day of all the dead. In this day we remember them. We pray for them. We say kadish about then. They were our brothers and sisters, they were our friends.
A month in to the war.
Dont you dare to forget them.
Tumblr media
Here are the names of every known person that died on October seven, all together. There are still unidentified missing people.
May their memory be a blessing.

Our life is a walk in the night. We know not how great the distance to the dawn that awaits us. And the path is strewn with stumbling blocks and our bodies are grown tyrannous with weeping, yet we lift our feet. We lift our feet.

Manila, Philippines — VoicePlay & Rachel Potter live performances
Tumblr media
When VoicePlay and their buddy Rachel Potter released their "Moana medley" video in the summer of 2017, it went a bit viral and brought them a number of new fans, especially among young kids and their parents. A year later, one of those families invited the six singers to perform at their daughter's birthday party in Manila, with the added incentive of a public show for more of their Filipino fans. A trip to the other side of the world was an opportunity they weren't about to pass up. Even if it did require a full day of travel each way, everyone agreed that the experience was well worth it.
