Canada’s new “pandemic prevention and preparedness” bill includes disturbing clauses that seek to dramatically reshape the nation’s food supply.
In order to allegedly “reduce pandemic risk,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government will “regulate” meat production and other elements of the agriculture industry that are essential for feeding the general public.
In addition, the bill states that the government will “promote” the “production of alternative proteins” such as lab-grown “meat” and insect-based “foods” in order to “prepare” for the “next pandemic.”
Once passed, the legislation, Bill C-293, will give Trudeau’s Liberal Party sweeping powers to regulate the food supply to allegedly “prevent” as well as “prepare” for a future pandemic.
The bill, titled “An Act respecting pandemic prevention and preparedness,” is now in its second reading in the Canadian Senate and is expected to pass.
The bill would amend the Department of Health Act.
By doing so, the legislation will allow the minister of health to appoint a “National pandemic prevention and preparedness coordinator from among the officials of the Public Health Agency of Canada to coordinate the activities under the Pandemic Prevention and Preparedness Act.”
The bill was first introduced to the House of Commons by Liberal MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith in the summer of 2022.
The House later passed the bill in June of 2024 with support from the Liberals and NDP (New Democratic Party).
The Conservatives and Bloc Quebecois firmly opposed the bill.

Publisher's Summary:
Many Worlds, or The Simulacra is an anthology of reality-bending stories from a one-of-a-kind collective of authors building a shared multiverse. The stories in this anthology range from quietly strange to ambitiously speculative. Humans transform into cosmic energy or sentient algae. A man wakes up in a new body in a world with continents cut out, months absent from the calendar year, and souls misplaced. Students at a high school regularly vanish without a trace. A woman descends into the depths of the ocean and encounters all-knowing creatures who may have the answers to her deepest questions. Mech-suits and parallel selves, conspiracy forums and interstellar telepaths, and a mysterious cosmic force connecting it all; the stories in this collection are revelatory and offer a breathtaking portal into worlds far more mysterious than our own. Subversive, transgressive, and utterly original, this collection compels the listener to believe in the fantastical. Many Worlds features stories by Rebekah Bergman, M. Darusha Wehm, Craig Lincoln, alongside other fascinating voices in speculative fiction. This collection is edited by Cadwell Turnbull, author of The Lesson and No Gods, No Monsters, and Josh Eure, winner of Sundress Publications’ Best of the Net Award. ©2023 by respective contributors. About midway through Justine Triet's fascinating, Palme d'Or-winning drama, a pair of characters are making their way down a twisty mountain road in the middle of the night. Sandra Voyter (Sandra Hüller), a novelist accused of murdering her husband, Samuel (Samuel Theis), is being driven by her lawyer, Renzi (Swann Arlaud), immediately after being sent away in tears from her 11-year-old son, Daniel (Milo Machado Graner), who must testify either for or against his mother in a couple of days. As Sandra sobs, Triet cuts from her face to a point of view shot of the road, dark and mysterious, dizzying in the headlights such that it feels as if anything can suddenly leap out of the darkness and into view. It's a strong metaphor for the film's raison d'etre, illuminating only briefly and in limited fashion, those twisty things that can come unexpectedly darting out of the human psyche.
Triet's film, part judicial procedural, part family drama, for the most part, plays down the more explosive elements of the genre -- as she has said in interviews, this is much closer, in spirit and tone, to Bergman, than, say, Costa-Gavras -- even as the case becomes a leading story throughout France, with TV tabloids and news shows opining endlessly on the myriad of ever-more-salacious details. Smartly, Triet for the most part, keeps her film within the world of the characters -- the news elements we do see are largely seen as they are being filmed on location, rather than the final product put out for broadcast -- even as the case clearly blows up into something far more magnified outside of the family itself.

The Rick and Morty Voice Acting Situation
As most of you probably know by now, the co-creator of the long-running Adult Swim series “Rick and Morty”, Justin Roiland, was faced with various charges and allegations for crimes such as domestic abuse and grooming earlier this year.
And although the court cases have been dropped, Roiland was still fired from not only Rick and Morty, but also every other project he was working on at the time.
This made of lot of people wonder what would happen to said projects, specifically Rick and Morty.
But those wonders would fade quickly as it was announced that Rick and Morty and Roiland's other projects like the Hulu original animated series "Solar Opposites", would still being continuing....but just without the involvement of Roiland.
Or....lack there of.
Oh yeah. Shortly after that announcement, a lot of people who worked on Rick and Morty came out about their experiences working with Roiland.
And apart from revealing how much of a shitty person he truly is, they also revealed that beside voice acting, Roiland hasn't really contributed to much to the show (like directing and writing) since Season 1.
So yeah, Rick and Morty was more or less going along perfectly fine without much of Roiland's involvement, and will pretty much continue to do so.
And after everything we found out about him, let's be real, the crew are really better off without him.
If only we could have it both ways.....
Tumblr media
Anyway, although the series is going to continue on just fine without Roiland's involvement, there is one notable area where his removal has put the crew in a bit of a tight spot....
Voice acting.
Roiland was not only the co-creator of Rick and Morty, but also the voice of the titular duo.
And since Roiland's gone, the crew are currently looking for new voices for the duo.
A lot of people have been speculating and suggesting that the crew would look for imitators (particularly fans of Rick and Morty) who can should just like the duo.
But after a recent announcement given by Adult Swim, it seems that's not gonna be the case.
When Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen was asked about the current casting process, he said that the crew wasn't really looking for imitators.
In his own words....
"No, not imitators... In any case the idea is that we feel that they are the same characters.....I'll take an example: there have been several great Bugs Bunny voice actors, and I love what Jeff Bennett has done with them. But it's not Mel Blanc! And yet we recognize the character. I even think that for Rick and Morty we will do even better... It will be fine. It'll be great."
This was a pretty insightful quote into their casting process.
And although many are hoping that one of many imitators, specifically Sean Kelly, to get the thumbs-up, the quote seems to indicates that the show isn't really looking for fan imitators, but instead professional voice actors.
I know that a lot of people (knowing how Rick and Morty fans are like) would be against this, I feel like this route has a bit more integrity.
It seems like they want to get actors who can actually deliver the best lines and performances, rather than just getting actors who could so 1-to-1 with Roiland.
And while I'm not against them casting imitators, I think they're better off casting professional voice actors since they tend to have much more range and more importantly, much more experience.
Plus, the comparison to Bugs Bunny also does bring up a good point.
Bugs has had many voice actors over the years.
Such as Jeff Bergman, Billy West, the late Joe Alaskay, and his current voice actor, Eric Bauza.
And although none of them sound like Bugs' original voice, the late Mel Blanc, or each other, their performances still fit the character perfectly.
Hell, just about every cartoon/fictional character that has existed for many, many decades have gone through this.
Having more recent voice performances that while fitting the character, don't sound quite like their original voice performance.
So if they can do it, Rick and Morty can do this as well.
And in all honesty, I find pretty admirable that the crew want to cast voice actors based on their merits rather than being able to sound just like Roiland.
Also, I hope they get separate actors for Rick and Morty.
I feel like that having the titular duo being voiced by separate actors would allow for better chemistry since they're not being voiced by the same actor, and don't have to rely on the honestly over-done improving that Roiland was know for.
But in that regard, I want to leave you off with this.
Out of all the professional voice actors you know, would do you think be the best choice?
Although they wouldn't be able to sound just like Roiland, who do you think would be able to capture the spirit of Rick and Morty the best?

Oscars 2023: Taylor Swift, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, and more shortlisted for Best Original Song
Tumblr media
Three of the biggest female music stars on the planet – Rihanna, Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga – were shortlisted for Oscars for best original song on Wednesday (Dec. 21), for “Lift Me Up” from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, “Carolina” from Where the Crawdads Sing, and “Hold My Hand” from Top Gun: Maverick, respectively. The three stars had previously been nominated for Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards in the same category for the same songs. These would be the first Oscar nominations for Rihanna and Swift; the fourth for Gaga, who was previously nominated in this category for “Til It Happens to You” from The Hunting Ground (2015) and “Shallow” from A Star Is Born (2018), which won the award. She was also nominated for best actress for the latter film. “Take My Breath Away” from the original Top Gun won the 1986 award in this category. The Weeknd was shortlisted for co-writing “Nothing Is Lost (You Give Me Strength)” from Avatar: The Way of Water. This could bring The Weeknd his second Oscar nomination. He was nominated seven years ago for co-writing “Earned It” from Fifty Shades of Grey. Drake could be headed for his first Oscar nomination with “Time,” which he co-wrote for the film Amsterdam. Depending on how the nominations shake out, the 2023 Oscar telecast could be as studded with top pop hitmakers as this year’s broadcast was when Beyoncé opened the show with “Be Alive,” Megan Thee Stallion guested on “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” and Billie Eilish performed “No Time to Die.” Two of the shortlisted songs were co-written by the directors of the films that spawned the songs. Ryan Coogler, the director of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, is among the co-writers of “Lift Me Up.” Guillermo del Toro, who co-directed Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio with Mark Gustafson, is among the co-writers of “Ciao Papa.” Diane Warren was shortlisted with “Applause” from Tell It Like a Woman. With this song, Warren vies for her 14th nomination in the category. She would be the first songwriter or songwriting team to be nominated six years running since Marilyn & Alan Bergman’s 1968-1973 streak. Warren received a Governors Award from the Academy on Nov. 19. Dernst “D’Mile” Emile II was shortlisted for co-writing “Stand Up” from Till with Jazmine Sullivan. D’Mile won in this category two years ago with “Fight for You” from Judas and the Black Messiah. Should he win again, he’d become the first Black songwriter to win twice in this category. Three of the shortlisted songs — “My Mind & Me” from Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me, “Good Afternoon” from Spirited and “Nothing Is Lost (You Give Me Strength)” from Avatar: The Way of Water — have five or more credited songwriters. If any of these songs wins the Oscar, the songwriters would receive a single statuette, which they would have to share. The Academy will present no more than four Oscar statuettes for best original song. Here’s a complete list of the 15 songs that were shortlisted for best original song. Per Academy custom, they are listed alphabetically by film title: “Time” Drake, Giveon Evans, Jahaan Akil Sweet, Daniel Pemberton Amsterdam, 20th Century Studios “Nothing Is Lost (You Give Me Strength)” The Weeknd, Steve Angello Josefsson, Sebastian Ingrosso, Axel Hedfords, Simon Franglen Avatar: The Way of Water, 20th Century Studios “Lift Me Up” Ryan Coogler, Ludwig Göransson, Rhianna, Tems Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Marvel Studios “This Is a Life” David Byrne, Ryan Lott, Mitski Everything Everywhere All at Once, A24 “Ciao Papa” Alexandre Desplat, Roeban Katz, Guillermo del Toro Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, Netflix “Til You’re Home” Rita Wilson A Man Called Otto, Sony Pictures “Naatu Naatu” Kala Bhairava, M. M. Keeravani, Rahul Sipligunj RRR, Variance Films “My Mind & Me” Amy Allen, Jonathan Bellion, Selena Gomez, Jordan K Johnson, Stefan Johnson, Michael Pollack Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me, Apple Original Films “Good Afternoon” Khiyon Hursey, Sukari Jones, Benj Pasek, Justin Paul, Mark Sonnenblick Spirited, Apple Originals “Applause” Diane Warren Tell It Like a Woman, Samuel Goldwyn Films “Stand Up” Dernst “D’Mile” Emile II, Jazmine Sullivan Till, Orion/United Artists Releasing “Hold My Hand” BloodPop (Michael Tucker), Lady Gaga Top Gun: Maverick, Paramount Pictures “Dust & Ash” J. Ralph The Voice of Dust and Ash, Matilda Productions “Carolina” Taylor Swift Where the Crawdads Sing, Sony Pictures “New Body Rhumba” Pat Mahoney, James Murphy, Nancy Whang White Noise, Netflix Inevitably, several high-profile songs were passed over for the shortlist. Among them: “Love Is Not Love” (Marc Shaiman, Billy Eichner) from Bros; “(You Made It Feel Like) Home” (Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross) fromBones and All; “Not Alone” (Joe Jonas, Ryan Tedder, HARV, Khalid)from Devotion; “Turn Up the Sunshine” (Jack Antonoff, Patrik Berger, Sam Dew, Kevin Parker)from Minions: The Rise of Gru; “Ready As I’ll Ever Be” (Brandi Carlile, Tanya Tucker)fromThe Return of Tanya Tucker featuring Brandi Carlile; “I Ain’t Worried” (Ryan Tedder, Brent Kutzle, Tyler Spry, John Eriksson) from Top Gun: Maverick; and “Nobody Like U” (Billie Eilish, Finneas O’Connell) from Turning Red. Eilish and Finneas are the reigning champs in the category for co-writing the title song from No Time to Die. “Vegas,” the biggest hit from Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis, had previously been ruled ineligible because it borrows so heavily from “Hound Dog,” the 1950s classic co-written by Mike Stoller and the late Jerry Leiber. No one expected to see Leiber and Stoller shortlisted, but the song’s proponents hoped the song’s other writers – Doja Cat, Rogét Chahayed and Yeti Beats – would be honored. Nominations for the 95th Oscars will be announced on Tuesday Jan. 24, 2023. The telecast, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, will take place on Sunday, March 12, 2023, airing live on ABC from the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood. The Pool Scene - Eklent Kaci, Jayson Shaw, Joshua Filler, Justin Bergman, Niels Feijen - Mosconi Cup
New Post on https://thepoolscene.com/?p=55412
USA LEAD DRAMATIC PARTYPOKER MOSCONI CUP BY ONE
Tumblr media
Van Boening/Woodward 5-1 Filler/Kaci Skyler Woodward 5-3 Niels Feijen Woodward/Styer 5-4 Kaci/Kazakis Shane van Boening 0-5 Joshua Filler Bergman/Thorpe 4-5 Shaw/Feijen
Team USA lead the partypoker Mosconi Cup 8-7, setting it up for a dramatic Thanksgiving finale at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino Convention Center, live on Sky Sports and DAZN.
The day began with the scores at 5-5 and USA extended that to 8-5, with Skyler Woodward involved in all three wins. A Joshua Filler inspired Europe fought back though as the German beat Shane van Boening 5-0 before Jayson Shaw and Niels Feijen won a hill-hill thriller against Justin Bergman and Billy Thorpe that had it all and sparked wild European celebrations.
USA Coach Johan Ruijsink had scheduled Woodward to play in each of the day’s opening three matches, starting with a doubles pairing alongside Van Boening, with Filler and Eklent Kaci in opposition.
The Albanian carried the adrenaline of the walk-on into his break and scratched to the middle pocket, handing early initiative to USA. Europe’s next shot was their break at 2-0 down, but they couldn’t capitalise, and the rack went to USA. Kaci and Feijen took the fourth but a poor Filler push out gave America control of the fifth and they duly moved to the hill.
Breaking for the match, Woodward had the 8 down but Van Boening was left unsighted on the 1. No problem, though, for the South Dakota Kid, who jumped the 3 to cut the 1 to the top corner and America were perfect from there to move 6-5 ahead.
Woodward remained at the table to face Feijen, who was yet to find his stroke this week. The Dutchman looked to be staring down a 3-0 deficit when Woodward missed an uncharacteristic 9-ball and Feijen was able to put a three-pack together for the lead. But if any confidence was being built by the four-time MVP, it wasn’t able to grow any further. Woodward ran the sixth rack and a dry break by Feijen in the seventh was his last shot of the match as the Kentucky Kid, who is fast becoming ‘Mr Mosconi’ for Team USA, cleared the table twice for a 5-3 win and a 7-5 US lead.
That heaped pressure onto European pair Kaci and Kazakis, who were out next in doubles against Woodward and Styer. The Euro duo were both losing debutants last year and Kazakis had struggled so far this week too.
An American break and run in the first rack served to increase the decibel level from the US audience, but Europe took the next two for the lead. A fluked 3-ball – an attempted Kaci jump to the bottom corner which clipped the draw and screwed diagonally to the top corner – set Europe on their way to 3-1.
They reached the hill with a three-rack advantage, but a dry Kaci break handed an opportunity to USA, and Styer and Woodward took two racks to close to 4-3. Another European dry break brought the US duo straight back to the table and they gave the crowd the second hill-hill match of the week.
When Styer missed a tough cut on the 1, things looked promising for Europe. Kaci left Kazakis a 3-ball which was straight, but with the cue ball against the side rail on the jaw of the middle pocket. It was the kind of shot you need to make to win Mosconi Cup’s, but what followed was a Kazakis miss which was symptomatic of his struggles at this competition over the last two years, and it meant Europe were 8-5 down. Woodward had the final 9 and before shooting it urged the Mandalay Bay crowd to its feet. To a man, they obeyed, and gave perhaps the week’s loudest raw as the new yellow and black Aramith 9 hit the bottom of the pocket.
“I said to Tyler, anything can happen – they won four in a row, so can we,” said Woodward, who was involved in all three US wins. “MVP would be nice but I don’t care about that as long as we win. I don’t care who is MVP, let’s just get the cash! It is a huge point. We will win the session before and it’s a big confidence booster for Shane coming in now.”
Both captains went strong with their next singles picks, giving the fans what they’d voted for on day two. The Fans’ Choice saw Filler win 5-1 on Tuesday and Europe were desperate for the repeat. In this match, it was America looking for revenge.
Filler, though, was in no mood for a US party. He won the lag and first rack and as he gained position on the 9 in the second, he turned to the home crowd and put his finger to his lips.
It was his performance, though, that would silence the American fans. The German lost control in the next rack but when Van Boening’s 3-ball cut missed the top corner, Filler was straight out of his seat, ran around the table and completed the rack in no time at all.
Van Boening’s next break was dry but Filler missed a 4-ball jump. The South Dakota Kid, though, left an easy 6 in trying to play safe. He’d intended to tie it up with the 9 on the bottom rail, but it didn’t hold and was left invitingly over the pocket. The rack was Filler’s and he was on the hill.
The fifth rack turned out to be the last one of the match and though it wasn’t without drama, it was what happened after the handshake that had America infuriated.
Van Boening left the arena, and Filler turned to his fans. At that moment he spotted his picture, complete with a crown on his head, on the big screen and turned back to the American side of the auditorium, asking ‘Who is the King, who is the King?’ USA Coach Johan Ruijsink urged him back to the European side, where captain Marcus Chamat lifted Filler into his chair to receive the adulation of the travelling support.
“The fans make this event so specially but when I am in the arena there is no time for respect,” said Filler. “I respect Shane as a player and everybody said he is the king but I had to show everybody that I am the King now.
“We were three points behind but now just two, and we are getting closer. The last match is so important for us if we can go to just one point behind. Tomorrow is all singles matches and I see us as having a big advantage in the singles.”
The final match of the night dished up one of the most dramatic finishes to a day’s play the partypoker Mosconi Cup has seen. From 3-0 and
4-2 down, Feijen and Shaw drew level with Thorpe and Bergman and the final rack was huge; 9-6 or 8-7 going into day 3. The break was USA’s and, hooked on the 6, Thorpe played a superb bank to the bottom corner. It was a great shot under pressure, but it left Bergman a tricky 7, which the Illinois man missed. With the 8 already down, Shaw and Feijen just had one ball each remaining and as the Dutchman sealed the point, European celebrations began.
“There was a tonne of pressure,” said Feijen. “I was struggling the first two days and every little thing that goes wrong you get punished severely. We didn’t do a lot wrong but we were down 3-0 so the heat was on right away but we stuck with it, played some really nice shots, quick wins and the crowd were unbelievable.
“This was a monster win. When Billy got hooked at 4-4, he made a tremendous bank but the shape was tough on the 7 and Justin had a lot of pressure on him.”
“It is a big win and we are only one point down now with all singles to play tomorrow. It’s game on,” added Shaw. “Last year we were three down going into the last day and we came back strong. One match changes everything and there is a lot of pressure out there now, so tomorrow the singles will be massive.”
The 2019 partypoker Mosconi Cup concludes on Thursday with a maximum of six singles matches. The first team to 11 will take home the trophy.

Species Dysphoria
We saw some concerns over the legitimacy of species dysphoria as a term appear on our dashboard yesterday and wanted to share some bits of information regarding it:
Species dysphoria has been used since at least the 90s. [1] Species dysphoria has been talked about it being a thing in queer publication since at least 1997. [2] And its continued to talk about in literature about being queer as being a thing since then. [3]
Species dysphoria has been used by academics since the late 2000s and has continued to be discussed more and more ever since. [4] Also, for Othercon 2021, we did a whole survey and subsequent panel “The Use and Misuse of The Term Transspecies“ which covered people’s feelings on species dysphoria along with people’s options on the term transspecies. Our survey found at - Roughly 77% of respondents experience species dysphoria, & - An overwhelming number of respondents viewed the use of the term positively. [5]
Based on this information and more, we feel that it is clear to say that, species dysphoria is perfectly valid term to use in the community. Full stop.
