I get this question surprisingly often so I'm just gonna tag for it and henceforth direct ppl to the tag;

In the anime he was shown to be in restraints during the project. It's also implied that it took a while (guess they didn't have Ryota's magic anime yet), and that he wasn't exactly happy during it, so that's basically it; restraints, increased strength, and distress all combined.
