I wish I came up with this analogy myself
You can find a bunch of people saying that they had cold symptoms and then when they went to the doctor it turned out they truly had a cold. That doesn't mean that everyone who self dxes their coughing and sneezing truly has a cold
You can find stories of people who got a false negative covid test. That doesn't mean that covid tests are complete bunk. Doctors are fallible humans. You are also a fallible human and on top of that you don't have a medical degree.
When I distrust your assumption that you have a cold, I'm not saying that you're faking your coughing and sneezing for attention. I'm not saying that you definitely don't have a cold. I'm saying you can't know until you get a test to rule out covid.
Your coughing could be caused by covid or allergies or leukemia or a ton of other things that you didn't even consider was possible but a doctor would be educated on. It's to your benefit that if your coughing is caused by leukemia that you get treated for leukemia. Getting a proper diagnosis is more likely to put you on the path to alleviating your symptoms than just assuming you have a cold.
When you're researching online whether you have a cold, you're focused on the symptoms that confirm it and discarding symptoms that don't. You're not researching anything that you didn't think of, whereas a trained medical professional would have familiarity with a wide variety of things that could explain the symptoms.
There's a lot of online misinformation telling you that covid is really a cold. In the case of mental health stuff, it's more like constant posts going around saying like "Did you know that if your nose bleeds when it's really dry out that's actually a symptom of having a cold?" and a bunch of the comments by people, some of whom were genuinely diagnosed with a cold, some self dx, being like "Wow that totally happens to me. I didn't realize that was a cold symptom." The vast majority of posts on social media about mental health symptoms are like this. You can't trust Tumblr to give you accurate information. (On anything. Mental health is not a special exception.)
Even without a cold diagnosis, you can still use over the counter cold medication. If it helps you, then that's great! It still doesn't mean that you necessarily have a cold. Medication designed to treat colds can work to reduce covid symptoms too.
If you can't afford to get a covid test, that doesn't mean that you can suddenly diagnose yourself with a cold. It means we live in an unjust system that gatekeeps healthcare from people who need it. You still might have covid.
Unlike with mental health symptoms, there isn't an online community for having a cold. You're not being bombarded with memes about how cool and fun it is to have a cold. People will believe all sorts of things if it gives them a sense of community. That doesn't make it true.
